Exclusive: Still Up, Apple TV+’s insomnia comedy starring The Good Doctor fan favorite Antonia Thomas and Craig Roberts, has been axed after one season.
The series was quietly shelved earlier this year, we are told, having launched in September 2023.
Produced by I May Destroy You maker Various Artists and created by Natalie Walter and Steve Burge, Still Up followed the exploits of Lisa (Thomas), an impulsive and free-spirited aspiring illustrator whose questions over her daughter’s future start keeping her up at night, and the socially anxious yet gifted journalist Danny, played by Submarine’s Roberts. The pair have no secrets, except their feelings for each other, and while the world sleeps they spend their long nights talking despite never meeting.
Other cast included Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners), Lois Chimimba (The One), Luke Fetherston (Flowers in the Attic), Rich Fulcher (The Mighty Boosh) and Sam Spiro (Sex Education).

Not sleeping in the is a big problem for many people but if they had a best friend who is also up with them, could it be really fun. The new Apple TV+ series Still Up answers that question through a sweet story about two friends Lisa and Danny suffering from insomnia, who are connected mostly through video calls.
Created by Steve Burge and Natalie Walter, Still Up has a small cast and it does a good job of focusing on the important storylines through them while also establishing their eccentricities and wants in the story seamlessly. We never feel that any of the characters in the series are out of place or forced in the story.

People tend to become clumsy when they are dealing with a lot of hurdles, they say. Says who? Well, I am not quite sure about that, but Danny and Lisa have been tackling a lot of stuff, even though their lives may appear simple from a bird’s-eye view. Still Up Epiosde 2 is a subtle peek into the lives of both Lisa and Danny and the way they are dealing with things. The pigeon stuck in Danny’s house, clumsily flying around and finally hitting the wall, depicts his own state of life. Danny has been dealing with the issue of garnering the pleasure of being with a woman, and Lisa, on the contrary, has just been struggling to put up with her seemingly perfect life. Steve Burge and Natalie Walter, in their series Still Up, have been aiming to make things more interesting for the audiences with each passing episode.

Would you mind falling in love with a person you connect with instantly and talk to for hours over regular late-night video calls? The slow spark between Danny and Lisa builds up at the very beginning of the series Still Up without their realizing it. The romantic comedy thrives on the worlds of the two friends who are insomniacs, catching up with each other on routine late-night video calls. Created by Steve Burge and Natalie Walter, the handling of the major characters has been left to the deft hands of Craig Roberts and Antonia Thomas. The comic-buildup on romance is sudden and unexpected at the end of the episode when the characters match on the dating app, before which everything seemed to be a platonic conversation between the two friends.
Spoiler Alert
The bond between Danny and Lisa grows at a slow pace. But it’s sure to take greater turns in the future.

Still Up looks set to be one of the best comedies of the year.
Apple TV+ shared the official trailer for the new comedy series starring Antonia Thomas and Craig Roberts.
Still Up is an almost romantic comedy set in the after-hours world of insomniacs Danny (Roberts) and Lisa (Thomas), who have no secrets except their feelings for each other.
The trailer zeroes Danny and Lisa's bond. They struggle to sleep and bond as they help each other through the night.
Insomnia isn't easy to handle, so having someone on the other end of a phone with you throughout that difficult time must be comforting.
While Danny and Lisa believe their bond to be platonic, it seems romantic feelings are simmering beneath the surface between them.
The logline does reveal they have no secrets except their feelings for each other, so there's a good chance the eight-part comedy will chart that throughout.

I May Destroy You was one of the most critically-acclaimed and most-talked about television shows of 2020, despite what the Golden Globes say.
However, Michaela Coel has always said that the 12-episode series, which is a co-production between HBO and the BBC, was intended as a one-off. “When you see the final episode, you’ll know,” she said last year.
That said, HBO would like to remain in business with the Chewing Gum creator, who also runs her own Falkna Productions, for whatever she is planning next.
“She is noodling ideas and I hope anything she comes up with, we would be able to participate in,” Casey Bloys, chief content officer of HBO and HBO Max told Deadline.
Coel herself told the Obsessed With… podcast that she did have an idea for another series. “It is in the back of my mind,” she said. “And I keep telling this idea to...

This column contains full spoilers for HBO’s I May Destroy You, which aired its finale on Monday night.
The very first shot of I May Destroy You occurs, like much of Michaela Coel’s incredible HBO limited series, outside the boundaries of time, and possibly reality. We are in a small, cluttered bedroom, the bedspread filled with notepads, pens, and scraps of paper, the walls covered with index cards. The premiere lingers on this image for only a few seconds before jumping to Italy to meet our heroine, social-media...

In 2015, Michaela Coel’s screenwriting debut was the brilliant Chewing Gum, an E4 comedy that earned her two Baftas, an Rts win, several nominations and a considerable weight of expectation for what she’d write next.
What Coel wrote next is I May Destroy You, a BBC-HBO co-production announced last year under the working title of January 22nd. It’s the autobiographically inspired story of Bella (played by Coel), a young London writer whose drink is spiked on a night out. When she tries to piece together the events of what happened, Bella goes on a personal journey through trauma and pain that examines questions of sexual consent, liberation and exploitation in contemporary London.
Arriving on HBO and BBC One this June, here’s the latest trailer and more…

HBO has released the official trailer for “I May Destroy You,” its hotly-anticipated topical new TV series from Michaela Coel, the BAFTA-winning creator of “Chewing Gum.” Coel executive produces, writes, co-directs and stars in the series, which the network promises will be bold and candid, exploring the question of sexual consent in the present day given how much the landscape of dating and relationships has changed. And given Coel’s previous work, as well as the look of the trailer, it likely will be provocative.
HBO is certainly no stranger to envelope-pushing series. And “I May Destroy You” will likely fit in perfectly on the network that Zendaya’s “Euphoria” — or any number of its hard-hitting documentaries — call home.
Previously titled “January 22nd,” the official synopsis for “I May Destroy You” reads: “Set in London, where gratification is only an app away, the story centers on Arabella (Coel), a carefree,...
