Michael Anthony has opened up about his relationship with former Van Halen bandmate David Lee Roth. While the bassist insists he has nothing against the singer, he describes the frontman as “kind of a crazy guy.”
In July, Anthony will head out on the “Best of All Worlds” tour alongside Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, and Jason Bonham. The all-star outfit will be performing Van Halen songs from all eras of the band on the North American outing.

A couple years ago, a different tour honoring the late Eddie Van Halen was being planned that would have seen Anthony and Satriani playing alongside Roth and Alex Van Halen, with ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted also reported to be involved. That outing never materialized, and Anthony reveals he hasn’t spoken with Roth since.

Drummer Charlie Benante breaks down the Pantera classic “Walk” in a new video for Drumeo (watch below).
Benante, the longtime and still current drummer for Anthrax, joined Pantera in 2022 as part of the legendary metal act’s revamped reunion lineup. He’s had the difficult task of filling the shoes of the band’s late drummer, Vinnie Paul.

The veteran metal drummer begins his analysis of Vinnie Paul’s drum parts in “Walk” with the intro fill, which comes in after the first rounds of guitar riffs. The subtle complexities of the rhythm section become immediately apparent when Benante plays — for example — the opening fill slightly fast, showing that it doesn’t work.
“It sets up the groove a lot better, for me, if I don’t rush into it,” he said before playing it at the correct speed.

Valerie Bertinelli has revealed that Eddie Van Halen’s family and loved ones ordered pizza to his hospital room upon his passing on October 6th, 2020.
The rock icon’s ex-wife was at Eddie’s bedside with their son, Wolfgang Van Halen, and the guitar legend’s brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, along with Alex’s two sons.
Bertinelli told People in a new cover story that Eddie died while holding her hand and Wolfgang’s hand, with his last words to both being, “I love you.”
“I didn’t want to believe it was happening,” said the actress. “Even while it was happening, I wasn’t believing it was happening,”
She went on to say that she and the Van Halen family members decided to order pizza in his honor.

Eddie and Alex Van Halen had the closest musical relationship imaginable, playing together for nearly six decades — even in Van Halen’s most fallow periods, when the band was between singers, the brothers would rehearse at Eddie’s 5150 Studios to rehearse just about every day. Alex, Van Halen’s drummer, has been almost entirely silent since Eddie’s death from cancer in October 2020, sharing only a brief statement: “Hey, Ed. Love you. See you on the other side. Your brother, Al.”

New details have emerged about Alex Van Halen’s upcoming memoir, Brothers, which is set to hit shelves on October 22nd (pre-order here).
We recently reported on a listing for the memoir on publisher HarperCollins’ website. At the time, little was known about the book other than the release date and that it is 384 pages in length.
A listing on the official Van Halen Store website has now revealed further info about Brothers, which is described a “love letter” to Alex’s younger brother, the late guitar god Eddie Van Halen, and that it was written alongside New Yorker writer Ariel Levy. The cover artwork can also now be seen below.
The official description on the Van Halen store website reads:
“In his rough yet sweet voice, Alex recounts the brothers’ childhood, first in the Netherlands and then in working-class Pasadena, California, with an itinerant musician father and a very...

A memoir by Alex Van Halen titled Brothers is set for an October 22nd release via HarperCollins.
The 384-page hardcover autobiography comes as a surprise given how private Alex has been since the passing of his brother Eddie Van Halen in 2020. HarperCollins will also be publishing a 720-minute audiobook and an ebook edition in addition to the physical hardback. Pre-orders are now ongoing.
Although limited details are currently available, HarperCollins’ preview revealed the working title for the book, “The Brothers Van Halen.” We can surmise that the book will follow Alex and Eddie’s ascent to rock stardom as the drummer and guitar wizard of Van Halen, respectively.
Famously, the two almost had reversed roles, as they would swap instruments as kids before Eddie stuck to guitar for good. The seeds of Van Halen were planted when the brothers’ formed their early band Mammoth in 1972 prior to teaming up with...

David Lee Roth is in full vendetta mode these days. After hitting back at Sammy Hagar last week, he’s now turned his attention to Wolfgang Van Halen.
The longtime Van Halen singer posted a YouTube video on Wednesday (January 24th) deriding the son of the late Eddie Van Halen. The clip starts out with a conversation between Diamond Dave and “Jesus Christ” that metaphorically suggests that Wolfgang benefitted from nepotism when he was tapped to play bass in Van Halen as a teenager back in 2007.
The immature Jesus voice says, “Bro, I just want people to know … I got this job because of my talent. I woulda had this job anyway even if my dad wasn’t God.”
Then, Dlr goes into a long story about how Wolfgang complained about not getting enough attention from the singer, and that the young Van Halen supposedly mistook the band’s accountants...

When it comes to the relationship between David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar, the usual question is “Why can’t this be love?” However, it looks like there may be a truce among the long-feuding Van Halen frontmen, as Diamond Dave has seemingly accepted the Red Rocker’s invite to join him onstage.
Hagar recently announced the 2024 “Best of All Worlds Tour” (tickets available here), featuring an all-star backing band of Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Jason Bonham. The summer outing will see Hagar and company focusing largely on Van Halen material.
Following the tour announcement, Hagar told Howard Stern, “We’re gonna invite every musician in every town. … Other guitar players, we’ll get them involved; other singers, get ’em involved. If Alex Van Halen wants to jump out — if David Lee Roth wants to come out and join us, come on motherf**ker, you are welcome. This is about Van Halen.

Hagar appeared on The Howard Stern Show alongside his all-star touring band featuring longtime Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, guitar wizard Joe Satriani, and drummer Jason Bonham. It was during the interview with Stern that Hagar extended the invites, emphasizing that the tour was a celebration of not only his era of the band, but Dlr’s, as well.

Eddie Van Halen was in the process of reuniting Van Halen’s classic lineup for a farewell tour before his health took a turn for the worse and he eventually passed away in October 2020. The revelation comes from Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, who met with the rock legend in 2019.
While speaking with Sirius Xm (as transcribed by Brave Words) about Extreme’s recent comeback single “Rise” and the band’s forthcoming album, Six, Bettencourt recalled a surprise visit from Eddie during the recording of the LP. Before Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson inevitably commences his presidential run, he might want to first try running for president of the cutthroat Hoa at North Beverly Park, where he’ll have his legendarily callused hands full dealing with some of SoCal’s most high-maintenance residents, folks who live in what is often considered the most exclusive and expensive guard-gated community in Los Angeles. Hollywood’s highest paid actor (the Fast & Furious franchise, the Jumanji franchise, Ballers) and his wife Lauren Hashian have a new mansion in the community, where some of their nearest neighbors include Denzel Washington, Sly Stallone, Rod Stewart, Eddie Murphy and Sofía Vergara.
Last week, Johnson rolled out $27.8 million for a particularly lavish estate within Beverly Park, which sits high in the mountains above Beverly Hills. The deal went down quietly and closed off-market, though the property was very briefly available for sale earlier this year with a $30 million ask.

It’s been a week now since Eddie Van Halen died and the shock is still reverberating throughout the rock community. Rumors of his ill health circulated for years, but nobody in or around the band commented on them at any point beyond a few cryptic remarks from David Lee Roth about Van Halen being “finished” since Eddie wasn’t “answering the bell this time.”

Eddie Van Halen, the self-taught guitarist for Van Halen who influenced generations of players with his legendary licks, died today of cancer. He was 65 and had battled health problems and addictions for a number of years. His son and bandmate, Wolfgang Van Halen, announced the news on social media:

I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.

David Lee Roth caused mild panic in the Van Halen fan community late last year when he told the press that the band was “finished” as he announced plans for his Las Vegas residency and solo tour with Kiss. Former frontman Sammy Hagar hasn’t spoken directly to Eddie Van Halen since the conclusion of their 2004 reunion tour, but talking to Rolling Stone, he has a different take than Roth’s assessment.
“Until Ed or Alex Van Halen die, they’re not finished,” he tells Rolling Stone. “Those are two...

Sammy Hagar and the Circle haven’t officially postponed their upcoming summer tour with Whitensake and Night Ranger yet, but right now it’s hard to imagine major concerts taking place as soon as July. Nobody knows how this is going to play out, but it’s quite possible that the entire 2020 concert season will get pushed back to next year.

Sammy Hagar and the Circle are still officially booked to tour North American amphitheaters this summer on a bill with Whitesnake and Night Ranger, but odds are rather high they’ll be forced to either cancel or postpone it due to the coronavirus.
As they wait to learn the fate of their tour — along with the rest of us — Hagar and bandmates Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham and Vic Johnson have teamed up via the internet to record a cover of the Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” They shave...

In 2017, when Rolling Stone counted down the top 100 metal albums of all time, Human, a 1991 LP by Florida outfit Death, landed at number 70. Death are widely credited with helping to launch the death-metal subgenre with their grisly, unrelenting 1987 debut Scream Bloody Gore, but by 1991, bandleader Chuck Schuldiner had more on his mind than raw extremity. Human’s opening seconds made that clear: The album’s first track, “Flattening of Emotions,” starts with a mind-bending drum intro, layering supple tom-tom rolls over pounding double bass, that sounds like a tribal riff...

David Lee Roth kicked off his new Las Vegas show at the House of Blues on Wednesday night with a set packed with Van Halen classics like “Panama,” “Jamie’s Cryin’,” “Jump” and “Atomic Punk.” He also added a sprinkling of solo tunes, like “Just Like Paradise” and his cover of Louis Prima’s “Just a Gigolo.”

Following rumors of a potential Van Halen reunion this summer, David Lee Roth said the band was “finished” during an interview with the Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown podcast from Detroit’s 101 Wrif.
“It’s been canceled a number of times and I think Van Halen’s finished,” Roth said, before calling his upcoming Las Vegas residency “the next phase.”

Decades before Greg Kurstin was producing hits for Adele, Paul McCartney and the Foo Fighters, he was a preteen Van Halen diehard. “I saw them on their Diver Down tour,” he remembers. “I got to see them play ‘Unchained,’ and that was amazing. I was a massive Van Halen fan at that time.” So when he met singer Inara George and formed the jazzy synth-pop duo the Bird and the Bee with her, he was excited to learn that she, too, was a Van Halen stan. Imagine for a second that the Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun drama played out in the music business last week was an orchestrated PR campaign. I don’t say that because I believe that it was one, you understand. I say it because, hypothetically, if it was one, it really couldn’t have gone much better.
According to Google Trends, the peak of search interest for “Taylor Swift” in the past three months came on April 26th, with the release of her comeback single, “Me!,” featuring Brendon Urie of Panic!

In 1984, a man named Kurt Jefferis nearly partied to death with Van Halen. Jefferis was the winner of MTV’s “Lost Weekend” contest and his prize was a few days of debauchery on the road with the Eighties metal legends. The promotion was a massive success for MTV, which aired much of the mayhem, including the moment Van Halen brought Jefferis on stage, smashed his face into a giant cake and showered him with champagne. But there was also plenty of footage not suitable for broadcast: Van Halen and their...

An unauthorized dramatization of the lives of David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen will be staged off-Broadway in New York City next year. Eddie and Dave will open at the Atlantic Theater Company – which launched the Tony Award–winning The Band’s Visit – on January 10th and run through February 10th. The production carefully avoids using the Van Halen name, likely to avoid a lawsuit as Ultimate Classic Rock reports, but it hints at the band: the key art presents the musicians’ hair as it looked in the early Eighties.

When famous people marry, their spouses often take on a famous last name. That benefit can even survive divorce. But can it be used as a commercial asset? Witness a new lawsuit by Elvh Inc., which is the intellectual property holding company of the world-famous rock band Van Halen. The group was eponymously named after its family members -- guitarist Eddie Van Halen and drummer Alex Van Halen (bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie's son, came into the fold in 2006, replacing Michael Anthony). In 1984, Alex married Kelly Carter. Twelve years later, he divorced Kelly Van Halen. Now, nearly two

Meet Avery Molek, a 6-year-old drummer who's currently experiencing his 15 minutes of YouTube fame. In a video making the rounds online this week, the tiny drummer is shown shredding his way through Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher," barely missing a beat as he plays the classic song like a pro.
Molek has been playing the drums since he was four years old and in just two years he's played over 15 shows spanning four different states, wowing crowds with his prodigious love of Kiss and other hard rock bands. According to his Facebook, the munchkin musician has also embarked on a tour in his homestate of Pennsylvania. He's already giving Mr. Alex Van Halen a run for his money!
Although we are loving Molek's intense drumming session, we can't help but think his song choice is a little, erm, mature for his age. We bet the first grader's elementary school...

Van Halen postponed some dates on its summer reunion tour last week, leading many to speculate that the notoriously combative band -- currently comprised of original members David Lee Roth and brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen, as well as Eddie's son, Wolfgang -- were combating once again.
"They're hard people to get along with, those brothers," former lead singer Sammy Hagar told The Associated Press on Friday. "Otherwise I'd still be in the band.
Hagar said he was surprised a delay took "this long" to even occur. "I predicted this was going to happen a lot sooner," Hagar said. "I lost money on that bet!"
Well, in an effort to quell the naysayers like Hagar, Roth himself has attributed the tour delay to an overly aggressive schedule.
"As usual, we bit off way more than we could chew when it came to scheduling," Roth says in a new video,...

Atlantic City, N.J. — Right now, Sammy Hagar is awfully glad he's not in Van Halen anymore.
The legendary rock band he led for more than a decade after replacing David Lee Roth in 1986 launched a tour in February with Roth back at the helm. But Van Halen on Thursday postponed dozens of shows this summer that had been scheduled for months, without giving a reason.
Hagar thinks he knows why.

-- Van Halen, "A Different Kind Of Truth" (Interscope)
Let's face it, for many fans, Van Halen without founding singer David Lee Roth just isn't Van Halen. It's Van Hagar. Or even Van That-Guy-From-Extreme.
Nearly 30 years after Roth and his bandmates parted ways following the group's "1984" album, they're back with "A Different Kind Of Truth."
Despite its title, the album's 13 tracks feel more than a little bit familiar, which is a good thing if you're looking to rewind the clock to Van Halen circa the late 1970s and early 1980s. If that sort of thing strikes you as dad-rock, however, then not so much.
Regardless, "A Different Kind Of Truth" shows 14 years since the last full Van Halen album, guitar demon Eddie Van Halen remains at the top of his game, betraying no hint of age or wear in his guitar work. All the staples are there: scorching riffs, waves...

The band is finally back together...well almost. After a 16-year hiatus, Van Halen has reemerged with David Lee Roth on lead vocals, and the famed rockers have released the first single from their forthcoming album "A Different Kind of Truth."
The song, titled "Tattoo," features three of the four original band members - Roth, Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen. The only missing original member is bassist Michael Anthony, who has been replaced in favor of Eddie's son Wolfgang.
It's a perfectly passable song, but it's not going to replace "Panama" or "Unchained" anytime soon in the hierarchy of Vh tunes. Wolfgang is fine on bass, but he doesn't offer the same harmony skills that the under-appreciated Anthony brought to the group.
This is Roth's first time singing with the group since he briefly rejoined the band for a greatest hits album in 1996. This effort delivered two songs,...

Van Halen is officially back. We now have an album release date of Feb 7 for "A Different Kind Of Truth," a confirmed tour and our first video for new single, “Tattoo.” Shot in an empty club (until the end at least), the clip for “Tattoo” succeeds if the point is to show that David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen (and Eddie's son, Wolfgang, on bass) are still all upright, but if the purpose was to get this fan excited to buy tickets, mission not accomplished. A few other thoughts: [More after the jump...] 1) Strobe lights...
