[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for American Rust Season 1.] American Rust is returning as American Rust: Broken Justice on Prime Video, after the series was unceremoniously canceled at Showtime following its first season. With Broken Justice soon to debut on Frevee, we’re breaking down all of the need-to-know details to remember before streaming the latest season, below. Beware of major Season 1 spoilers ahead. David Simon's "The Wire" is one of the most densely layered television dramas in the history of the medium. Over five seasons, it depicts in enraging and heartbreaking detail how fortunes rise and fall at the top of the civic food chain and at the bottom. We watch in disgust as a ruthless careerist like William Rawls (John Doman) rockets through the ranks of the Baltimore Police Department, and grieve for the hopeless middle-school students of the fourth season who, despite showing great promise in a math class taught by former cop Roland Pryzbylewski (Jim True-Frost), are destined for the streets....

After earning the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature, and a Special Jury Recognition for Breakthrough Voice at the 2019 SXSW festival, I was expecting big things from this drama comedy.
Saint Frances follows the life of Bridget. A thirty four year old woman who has yet to achieve her career goal as a writer and her new job sees her as a nanny to six year old Frances. Frances doesn’t make it easy for her and an unwanted pregnancy as well as two mums who are struggling with their relationship, means that things get a bit complicated in her life.

"Have you nannied before?" Oscilloscope Labs has debuted the trailer for an indie dramedy called Saint Frances, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last year. It also played at the Montclair, Lighthouse, Munich, Traverse City, Nashville, Milwaukee, and Denver Film Festivals last year. Kelly O'Sullivan stars, and also wrote the screenplay, playing a woman in her 30s who finally lands a job as a nanny for a six-year-old girl. After an accidental pregnancy turned abortion, and other troubles, she finds an unlikely friendship with the six-year old she's charged with protecting. Also starring Ramona Edith-Williams, Jim True-Frost, Francis Guinan, Lily Mojekwu, Mary Beth Fisher, and Charin Alvarez. The poster for this is utterly fantastic. Described in reviews as "a quintessential millennial comedy and a timeless commentary." Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Alex Thompson's Saint Frances, direct from YouTube: Flailing thirty-four-year-old Bridget (Kelly O'Sullivan) finally catches a...

The 26th edition of the SXSW Film Festival will feature movies directed by Harmony Korine and Olivia Wilde, an untitled romantic comedy starring Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron and a concert film with comedian Kathy Griffin.
The annual gathering in Austin, Texas, which starts on March 8, will open with Jordan Peele’s “Us,” which was previously announced. The thriller stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Elisabeth Moss.
There will be 102 features and TV episodes featured over nine days.
In recent years, SXSW has upped its game as a festival that covers a lot of ground. It reliably launches a few spring studio hits, such as last year’s “The Quiet Place” and “Blockers,” and also discovers under-the-radar storytellers. For attendees, there’s also keynote addresses with filmmakers and actors.
The standouts in this year’s lineup include Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” a much-anticipated comedy starring Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg and Zac Efron.

It’s no secret that the gap between premium television (paid for by and broadcast on traditional networks and/or the big online players like Netflix and Amazon) is getting smaller. Not in terms of budgets, but in terms of creativity, talent and opportunity. Increasingly the next big thing might come from the online world, and that wouldn’t be such a strange thing. Broad City and Insecure, two celebrated Us comedy series, both had their origins online, with sketches by Abbi and Ilana, and Issa Rae’s Awkward Black Girl. There’s a problem with the first season of “Z: The Beginning of Everything” that is reminiscent of, of all the unexpected things in this world, “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” (Please, give this a chance.)
“Batman v. Superman” is a notable film for how, scene by scene, it is a movie that actively dislikes its characters — from little touches to big choices, its only source of joy seems to be found in tearing down beloved icons into unrecognizable shells of themselves.
“Z” does not have that problem. In fact, it has the opposite dilemma. The Amazon Prime series, created by Nicole Yorkin and Dawn Prestwich, is just a little bit too in love with its leading lady. And while “Bvsdoj’s” antipathy towards its leads sucked all the joy out of the picture, “Z’s” infatuation with Zelda Fitzgerald detracts from its depiction of one of literature’s most fascinating and complicated women.

Even the most ignorant Americans are now aware of the murders of unarmed black men by police officers, but fewer people know that Canadian police officers have their own way of “accidentally” murdering indigenous men and women: By driving them miles away from the nearest town and leaving them outside to freeze to death. At least three Canadian Aboriginal men are thought to have been murdered this way in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the early 2000’s. The murders are incredibly difficult to prove, and a 2003 investigation was not able to result in a conviction. The investigations did bring wider attention to the practice, which became known as taking someone on a “Starlight Tour.”

'Affliction' movie: Nick Nolte as the troubled police officer Wade Whitehouse. 'Affliction' movie: Great-looking psychological drama fails to coalesce Set in a snowy New Hampshire town, Affliction could have been an excellent depiction of a dysfunctional family's cycle of violence and how that is accentuated by rapid, destabilizing socioeconomic changes. Unfortunately, writer-director Paul Schrader's 1998 film doesn't quite reach such heights.* Based on a novel by Russell Banks (who also penned the equally snowy The Sweet Hereafter), Schrader's Affliction relies on a realistic wintry atmosphere (courtesy of cinematographer Paul Sarossy) to convey the deadness inside the story's protagonist, the middle-aged small-town sheriff Wade Whitehouse (Nick Nolte). The angst-ridden Wade is intent on not ending up like his abusive, alcoholic father, Glen (James Coburn), while inexorably sliding down that very path. Making matters more complicated, Wade must come to terms with the fact that his ex-wife, Lillian (Mary Beth Hurt), will never return to him,...

Much as the horror genre is deeply rooted in the evolving culture that creates it, NBC‘s latest “action-drama,” American Odyssey, builds itself from the conspiracy fears that are now equally laughed off and assumed to be obviously true.
Sgt. Odelle Ballard (Anna Friel, “Pushing Daisies”) is part of a group that stumbles upon an Al Qaeda’s top commander, but she quickly discovers intel that suggests an American corporation is funding the group. A private military company comes to clean up, and Odelle’s company is killed to cover things up. She escapes, but now she’s on the run, and a long way from home, and doesn’t have anyone she can trust.
Meanwhile, back at home, former U.S. Attorney Peter Decker (Peter Facinelli) is in the middle of a merger with the same company that apparently funded the jihadists, and he starts to put the pieces...

NBC has tweaked the title of its upcoming drama Odyssey less than a month before its premiere, renaming the show American Odyssey.
Though the network declined to comment on what spurred the name change, sources close to the production say the new title better reflects the arduous journey of protagonist Odelle (Anna Friel), an American soldier beset by enemies on all sides as she attempts to return to her friends and family in New York.
Of course, the more cynical answer is that NBC execs weren’t living under a rock in January, when American Sniper stormed the box office and racked up Oscar nominations. Renaming the show American Odyssey may make the series more palatable to the same right-leaning audiences that sent Sniper soaring.

It may have failed to capture the attention of audiences when it first premiered in 2002, but The Wire eventually became one of HBO’s most successful shows and is now considered the greatest TV drama of all time.
Set in Baltimore, Maryland, the series captures the erosion of the city and the futility of the War on Drugs. Season one established the base storyline in which a hard-drinking detective (Dominic West) attempts to take down the heads of a major drug ring, only to learn that the operation extends far beyond the city’s streets.
The subsequent four seasons each explored a different facet of the drug world – the port system, the city government, education and journalism. Together, they create a fascinating show that weaved together a complex and carefully constructed story that provided an incredibly realistic look at urban life and the drug problems that continue to plague our society.

Last night, "The Wire" returned. Sort of. More accurately, creator David Simon and executive producer Nina Noble, and cast members Wendell Pierce, Michael K. Williams, Sonja Sohn, Seth Gilliam, Jim True-Frost, John Doman, Tristan Wilds, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., and Jamie Hector reunited at PaleyFest to talk about the HBO show nobody watched at the time, but that everyone now loves. And there was no shortage of stories to tell, but perhaps the most enticing tale is about "The Wire" spinoff we never got. “We were actually trying to spin off the city hall show and do a political show,” Simon revealed to BuzzFeed News, explaining it would've focused on Aiden Gillen's politician Tommy Carcetti. “We wrote a bunch of scripts that would spin off after Season 3 of 'The Wire.' But HBO said, 'No, we only want one show that nobody is watching in Baltimore, not two!’ ” Our hearts...

The cast of The Wire had a whole lot of fun during Thursday's reunion panel at New York's Paley Center for Media. Show co-creator David Simon, executive producer Nina Noble, cast members Michael Kenneth Williams, Wendell Pierce, Sonja Sohn, Seth Gilliam, Jim True-Frost, John Doman, Lawrence Gilliard Jr, and Jamie Hector took the stage, while surprise guests and cast members Tristan Wilds, J.D. Williams, Bob Wisdom, and Michelle Paress took seats in the audience. The show's Brits, Dominic West and Idris Elba, were both unable to make the panel, but popped their heads in (quite literally) with video messages. HitFix...

New York – The theater at the Paley Center was full tonight, and with good reason – the cast of "The Wire," along producers David Simon and Nina Noble, were present for a discussion and Q&A. HitFix's own Alan Sepinwall acted as moderator and the evening proved incredibly interesting. Anyone who has watched it, knows that "The Wire," which aired for five seasons on HBO, was a special show, and one that has only grown in stature and myth since it went off the air. Sepinwall probably described it best in his book, "The Revolution was Televised." He wrote that people will approach him and say, "I am ready to watch 'The Wire.' And they phrase it like that—like it's a religious obligation they are about to undertake, rather than viewing a modestly rated HBO drama." One look at tonight's audience, even as viewed via the livestream, illustrated just...

The East Coast branch of the Paley Center is in the midst of PaleyFest New York, which started last weekend and will run through Sunday. Like its La counterpart, the focus is mainly on current shows (and mainly ones that film in New York, or at least in parts east), but like its La counterpart so often features, there's a special reunion, and I get to moderate it: "The Wire." We'll have co-creator David Simon, producer Nina Noble, and at least eight castmembers: Wendell Pierce, Sonja Sohn, Michael Kenneth Williams, Seth Gilliam, Jim True-Frost, John Doman, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., and Jamie Hector. Dominic West is otherwise occupied on a film shoot, but he recorded a video message that will be played at the start. The theater at the Paley Center isn't very big — I'm hearing the front row may have to accommodate some additional surprise alums— and tickets to the event sold out quickly,...

A review of tonight's "Boardwalk Empire" coming up just as soon as I rob Peter to pay Paul... "Year in, year out: different dogs, same bone." -Nucky By shifting the final season into 1931, Terence Winter and company have brought us into a year where Al Capone isn't just a mob boss, but a celebrity, and when Lansky, Luciano and Siegel are making moves that will turn them into organized crime legends in their own right. The series could conceivably do a major pivot at the end and do a serialized version of "The Untouchables," with Stephen Graham and Jim True-Frost (Prez!) standing in for De Niro(*) and Costner, and/or focus heavily on the schemes of the not-so-young triumvirate of New York wiseguys. But the show has always been about Nucky's story, right or wrong, and "The Good Listener" plays interestingly off of the ways that this show's main character...

Recently, HBO released the new, official synopsis/spoilers for their upcoming "Boardwalk Empire" episode 2 of season 5. The episode is entitled, "The Good Listener," and it sounds quite interesting as Nucky shows back up on the scene after getting caught up in a dangerous Cuba encounter, and more. In the new, 2nd episode press release: Back from Cuba after a dangerous encounter, Nucky is going to pay a visit to the now-retired Johnny Torrio (Greg Antonacci), who agrees to broker a meeting with the new “Boss of Bosses,” Salvatore Maranzano (Giampiero Judica). In Chicago, Eli (Shea Whigham) and Van Alden (Michael Shannon) is going to get tasked by Mike D’Angelo (Louis Cancelmi), Al Capone’s (Stephen Graham) new right-hand man, to recoup money lost during a federal raid by Eliot Ness (Jim True-Frost). Fresh out of law school, Willie Thompson (Ben Rosenfield) will have a job interview. Rebuffed by a group of would-be financiers,...

[In case you've Forgotten, and as I will continue to mention each and every one of these posts that I do: This is *not* a review. Pilots change. Sometimes a lot. Often for the better. Sometimes for the worse. But they change. Actual reviews will be coming in September and perhaps October (and maybe midseason in some cases). This is, however, a brief gut reaction to not-for-air pilots. I know some people will be all "These are reviews." If you've read me, you've read my reviews and you know this isn't what they look like.] Show: "Odyssey" (NBC - Midseason) The Pitch: "It's 'Traffic' meets 'Homeland' meets whatever's on the front page of the newspaper today." Quick Response: First off, I wanna credit the ambition of Adam Armus & Nora Kay Foster's script and Peter Horton's directing/producing in this ensemble political thriller, which uses 51 minutes to introduce three interlocking stories and well over a dozen characters and an assortment of ripped-from-the-headlines plotlines that run the gamut from "familiar because you've seen them in movies or TV or in the news" to "nonsensical blather that presumably will make sense down the road." "Odyssey" is a project that aims high and even though it's 100 percent destined for failure, I would Always rather watch a flawed pilot with big dreams than a generic procedural. But I'm not sure a show like "Odyssey" has ever succeeded on network TV and nothing in Horton's admirable resume, nor the...

Michael takes a look ahead at the forthcoming final season of Boardwalk Empire, which starts on HBO this weekend...
Warning: contains spoilers for Boardwalk Empire up to season 4.
We ended last season of Boardwalk Empire with a mixture of continuation and change. The things that remained intact, among them Nucky’s slippery survival instincts, Chalky White’s igneous anger, Gillian’s appalling luck, were matched by the sense that things were changing, embodied by Richard Harrow’s lonely passing and Al Capone’s escalation to a position that we all know he’ll manage to commute to legendary infamy. That blend left the series with wide possibilities for the follow-up, or at least as wide as they can be when they need to cleave to historical events.
As we all know by now, this forthcoming fifth season will be Boardwalk Empire’s last. Truncated to a running time two thirds of its standard twelve episodes,...

Remember the movie Traffic? NBC has ordered a new action drama called Odyssey that sounds a lot like it.
The series will revolve around a female soldier, a corporate lawyer, and a political activist. Their lives unexpectedly collide after an international conspiracy explodes.
The cast of Odyssey includes Anna Friel, Peter Facinelli, Jake Robinson, Jim True-Frost, Treat Williams, Nate Mooney, Elena Kampouris, Daniella Pineda, Sadie Sink, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Omar Ghazaoui.
No word on how many episodes have been ordered or when the series will start airing. We should know more in the coming week.
What do you think? Does this show sound like a hit or a flop? Will you check it out?

Not content to let Fox hog the pre-upfronts series order merry-go-round, NBC started its 2013-2014 series pickups on Tuesday (May 6) afternoon. Thus far, NBC has given series orders to the comedy "Marry Me" and the dramas "Odyssey," "Allegiance" and "State of Affairs," starring Katherine Heigl. "Marry Me" comes from "Happy Endings" veteran David Caspe and was directed by Seth Gordon ("The Goldbergs"). It comes from Sony Pictures Television. Casey Wilson and Ken Marino topline "Marry Me" as a couple who have been together for six years. After a botched attempt at a wedding proposal, they decide to hold off until they can get it right. Hilarity may ensue. "Marry Me" also stars Sarah Wright, John Gemberling, Tymberlee Hill and Tim Meadows. "Allegiance" was created and directed by George Nolfi ("The Adjustment Bureau"), who will executive produce along with Avi Nir (“Homeland”), Ron Leshem, Amit Cohen, Yona Wisenthal and Giyora Yahalom.

Desperation sets in at a new level for Brian Sanders (Tate Donovan) on Monday's (Dec. 9) episode of "Hostages."
Given that he and his family were taken hostage in their own home; he's been bound, beaten up and shot; had his corrupt business practices; and had his affair at the office and tenuous marriage and relationships with his kids exposed, viewers would expect he had reached these depths already.
But no, Brian manages to sink lower in this episode. After directing his daughter Morgan (Quinn Shephard) to steal a friend's cell phone so he can make a call that cannot be traced, he calls Nina Carlisle (Francie Swift), FBI Agent Duncan Carlisle's (Dylan McDermott) wife is in a hospital, dying of leukemia.
She has no idea that that her husband has been moonlighting as a kidnapper, holding a family hostage. Or that he is doing so until Brian's wife, Ellen (Toni Collette...

For those who have stuck with "Hostages," Monday's (Dec. 2) episode pays offs. Big time.
Giving new meaning to the Stockholm Syndrome, FBI Agent Duncan Carlisle and Dr. Ellen Sanders (Dylan McDermott, Toni Collette) finally share a deep kiss. That's the penultimate scene of this episode.
The last scene has the kidnapper kidnapped. Carlisle is hogtied, duct tape slapped over his mouth and tossed in a van.
Before we get there, much happens to advance the plot, and five couples are highlighted.
Ellen has resigned herself to having the president die on her operating table. Carlisle explains to his co-conspirators, Archer, Kramer and Sandrine (Billy Brown, Rhys Coiro and Sandrine Holt) that they must take out the new team of hit men gunning for the president. He knows it's kill or be killed.
Carlisle also explains to Ellen's husband, Brian (Tate Donovan), that he needs Brian's contacts as a real estate...

With Monday's episode (Nov. 25), "Hostages" is two-thirds of the way through its run.
CBS is committed to finishing the series, and since 15 episodes were planned this is the 10th, we're 66.66 percent of the way there. In an unusual move, no one is killed this week. And a little more is explained.
For starters, FBI Agent Duncan Carlisle (Dylan McDermott) and Dr. Ellen Sanders (Toni Collette) have more honest conversations with each other than either does with anyone else. She wants to know why no one knows that his terminally ill wife, Nina, is the president's daughter.
Carlisle tells her, and it's shown in flashback how President Kincaid (James Naughton) was a young congressman in 1978. A young journalist went to his hotel room to interview him. He raped her, then tried to buy her off. When she could not be bought, Burton Delaney (Larry Pine) helped her leave the country.

Thanks to the arcane rituals by which Us TV schedules are constructed (I gather it’s something to do with moss, tides, and how high magpies build their nests), we’ve been Elementary-free for a few weeks, and are now to be again until April. Déjà-Vu All Over Again was a flying visit from the detective show, a quick drop-in to Sherlock and Watson’s Brownstone for an intriguingly intertwined pair of cases, and a Joan Watson origin story.
Now that Watson is a consulting detective-in-training, Elementary lives more than ever up to CBS’ advertising blurb, which describes “a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD’s most impossible cases”. Save for the violin talk, there was no discernible Conan Doyle influence in this episode, which...

The 1990s were quite a turning point for society as a whole. After a decade of conservative politics, neon colors, feel-good music, corporate greed and the entire “Me” generation, we as a collective whole hit a brick wall and said “enough”. Suddenly bands who were labeled “college rock” were hitting the popular stations, Grunge put Seattle back on the map. And suddenly no one knew who they were anymore. Clothiers stole from every imaginable source for inspiration, songwriters eschewed the party scene for lyrics that delved deep into the darker recesses of the soul, and the tough guy made way for the sensitive, caring man who wasn’t afraid to show emotion.
