Simon Helberg was so invested in landing the role of The Conductor in Leos Carax’s musical movie “Annette,” he became a French citizen.
The actor, perhaps best known for his 12-season run on CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory,” steals scenes opposite Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard in the film, arriving in theaters on Aug. 6 before hitting Amazon Prime Aug. 20. With a screenplay by Carax and Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks (who also wrote the music and lyrics), the film is largely a two-hander about a famous couple and their talented daughter — the title character.
It wasn’t Helberg’s TV stardom or roles in films like “Florence Foster Jenkins” that enticed Carax. “I had never seen Simon’s work in anything,” reveals the director. “He turned out to be very special. It’s difficult to find an actor who can really play the piano, sing and whom I’d want to film.

This holiday season Oxfam and friends are shopping differently and encouraging everyone to be kind to our planet, and our wallets, by regifting.
Joined by artists including Tiffany Haddish, Aisha Tyler, Alyssa Milano, Simon Helberg, Lake Street Dive, Margo Price and many more, Oxfam is promoting an online giveaway of some favorite regifted items. By making the earth-friendly and budget-friendly choice to join the Regift Revolution, they are giving a gift with big sentimental value but a small impact on the environment.
In 2018 the US alone produced 292.4 million tons of waste, that is about equal to the weight of 800 Empire State Buildings. But making the choice to give secondhand instead of shopping new doesn’t just cut back on waste, it cuts back on carbon emissions as well. Many of the toys and gifts we give each year are made out of plastic or packaged in plastic. And all that...

AMC first described “Lodge 49” as “a show that defies easy categorization,” and that’s certainly true. It’s technically a drama thanks to its hour-long runtime, but otherwise feels more like a stretched out hangout sitcom with startling moments of nihilism baked in where the laugh track should be. It doesn’t just defy easy categorization as a TV show unto itself; it defies expectations of what an AMC might, or should, look like, not quite fitting into any of the network’s previously established tones.
Created by author Jim Gavin, “Lodge 49” follows a group of people working through their frustrations and longing for something — anything — more in Long Beach, California. Twins “Dud” (Wyatt Russell) and Liz (Sonya Cassidy) are reeling and flailing after the sudden, mysterious death of their father, but their coping mechanisms and way of tackling problems send them spinning in opposite directions. Awards shows are often a forum for social commentary, but it's difficult to recall one as politically charged as the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Held in Los Angeles on the same weekend a civil rights crisis took place over President Donald J. Trump's controversial immigration ban, which left many foreign travelers detained in airports across the country, celebrities again and again took to the podium to criticize the executive order, and speak out in favor of unity over division.
More: 2017 SAG Awards: The Complete Winners List
This was evident from the beginning of the show, when Kerry Washington -- who revealed earlier that she'd wear a safety pin in protest of Trump's ban and proposed border wall -- used the show's annual "I'm an Actor" opener to advocate for the role of performers in political activism.

When The Big Bang Theory star Simon Helberg got ready for this year's SAG Awards, he wasn't worried about his hair or his stylish tuxedo; he was determined to make a political statement on the red carpet, and it definitely worked. While posing for photos, Simon held a sign reading "Refugees Welcome," while his wife, actress Jocelyn Towne, had "Let Them In" written in bold letters across her chest. While many presenters and nominees alike have been speaking out against Donald Trump's recent Muslim Ban and the huge protests his executive order caused, Simon and Jocelyn's statements had all eyes on them, as they proudly brought the protests to the red carpet.

Or maybe it's just that random blonde who, upon seeing on their first date that Quinn is wanted by multiple women, immediately sleeps with him? ★★☆☆☆Best known as the one of the lovable nerds around which CBS's world-dominating The Big Bang Theory revolves, Simon Helberg has now moved behind the camera for his cinematic directorial debut alongside his wife Jocelyn Towne. Inspired by their own romantic history, We'll Never Have Paris (2014) - which he also wrote - stars Helberg as a man suffering a relationship crisis just as he's plucked up the courage to pop the big question. Premièring in the UK at the Edinburgh Film Festival, We'll Never Have Paris wears Woody Allen's heart firmly on its sleeve, yet never quite scales the heights of the works it so desperately attempts to reference and emulate.

It’s worth noting how enticing that surface actually is, with the trailer doing a great job of inviting you into an intimate story of father-daughter bonding, which looks to be just sweet enough to dilute the familiar toxicity of Hollywood’s formulas. And something about Towne’s screen presence, which gives off an offbeat quirky vibe similar to Lisa Kudrow on a quiet day, contrasting against Kevin Tighe’s kindly, oblivious old man, makes the delicate evolution of the central relationship endearing to behold. Anyone who has an estranged relationship with one or both of their parents can easily relate to the emotional jolts experienced by the central character, and the situation she’s...

Written and directed by Jocelyn Towne, the moving I Am I presents a refreshing spin on both the amnesia and daddy issues genres.
On the occasion of her mother Sarah's funeral, Rachel (Towne) discovers that her long-lost father, Gene (Kevin Tighe), is alive, in an assisted living home, and is an amnesiac who believes that it's 1979 and that he's still the young man who abandoned his family.
When Gene refuses to believe that Rachel is not actually Sarah, Rachel goes with it, dressing and role-playing as her 1970s-era mother in order to get to know her father.
I Am I is a remarkably assured debut for director Towne, especially since she's onscreen the majority of the time, and her script eschews the rules of the standard Hollywood amnesia plot, ins...

Sometimes there’s a little bit of legwork involved in being a Jason Ritter fan. With a career that’s toggled between interesting character roles in limited-release movies (2005’s Happy Endings, 2008’s Good Dick) and bigger parts in short-lived TV shows (Joan of Arcadia, The Class, The Event), his always-nuanced performances can often prove hard to catch. That changes today with the Vimeo On Demand release of I Am I, a Kickstarter-funded movie about a woman posing as her recently deceased mother in order to get to know her long-lost father, who is suffering from memory loss. The actor co-stars with Jocelyn Towne, who also wrote and directed the film, and her husband The Big Bang Theory's Simon Helberg, who has been a friend of Ritter’s since high school. Next week will see the release of The Big Ask, another indie Ritter shot with a cast of TV thespians,...

This summer marks a very special anniversary. It’s fair to say we all remembered what took place on August 4, 2000. On that most likely quiet and peaceful summer day, one film dominated the cultural conversation, a true game changer unlike any other film of its kind. For years people had been asking, “What is this Coyote Ugly? Is it more than just some bar at the New York, New York hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada?” Kangaroo Jack director David McNally finally answered that question with his unconventional story of a small town girl trying to make it in the big city with Coyote Ugly. That picture co-starred Melanie Lynskey as Gloria, the young girl’s best friend. Needless to say, it’s not Lynskey’s best film — that honor goes to The Informant, which is her personal favorite as well — but it was the last film I watched of Lynskey’s before speaking with her at SXSW...

Now in its 27th year, SXSW is like the late bloomer who stuns his parents by announcing his basement-based online venture is now worth a million bucks. The Austin, Texas-based festival isn’t glamorous, like Cannes, or corporate, like Toronto, or even insistently anti-Hollywood, like Sundance. Compared to its more-pedigreed rivals, SXSW is simply more chill. It puts the festive back in festival — there’s a giant music and growing interactive element as well — and artists of all sorts are eager to come to the party. Jimmy Kimmel Live will broadcast there for a week. Lady Gaga will drop in.

As doors slam and the power gives out and the threads of family fray, a mystery lingers: why has Alan returned home without Farrah,” reads the official description.

South by Southwest 2014 kicks off this week with a terrific slate of indie comedies and dramas (here are our ten most anticipated films of the fest). We've got the first look at one of them: "We'll Never Have Paris," from directors Jocelyn Towne and Simon Helberg (who wrote the film). The film stars Helberg -- who also stars in TV's "The Big Bang Theory," if you're into that -- as Quinn, a neurotic mess of a man in a quarter-life crisis that explodes when a coworker (Maggie Grace) confesses her love for him mere moments before he was to propose to his girlfriend (Melanie Lynskey). And so, Quinn up-and-leaves his longtime partner for a brush with love -- regretting his decision almost instantly. Helberg's directorial debut also stars Zachary Quinto, Alfred Molina and Jason Ritter. Check out the poster debut below.
