The pain of loss affects everyone differently. Some of us fall into a deep depression that saps our energy, leaving us unable to concentrate or even leave the house. Some of us throw ourselves into our work, seeking distraction through constant activity and meticulous obsession.
Of course, there are also those among us who begin stalking the surgeons who failed to save our loved ones, and in doing so discover that they actually lead a secret double life as sadistic serial killers. It’s really a very common part of the grieving process.
Don’t believe me? Ask recently widowed Angela (Simona Vannelli). Made famous by directors such as Dario Argento, Mario Bava, and Lucio Fulci, Giallo (an Italian term) movies are murder mystery/horror thriller affairs that have always had a cult following. Unfortunately, there are very few modern Giallo movies made so I was pleased to see Nightmare Symphony get a release… and be able to review it!
Nightmare Symphony, a tribute to Lucio Fulci’s Nightmare Concert/A Cat in the Brain, in which Fulci himself played a tortured horror filmmaker haunted by his own bloody horror film visions; follows a director attempting to finish making his film while someone or something is killing off the people trying to finance and help him make it.

Crucified (aka Everybody’s End) does sound like a slightly odd title for a movie about a post-apocalyptic world in which an epidemic has taken over and a few survivors band together to try and stay alive. But the title does get explained towards the end of the movie in an interesting turn of events.
As far as post-apocalyptic worlds go, especially in lower-budgeted movies, Crucified looks pretty good. A mix of basic CGI and using a small indoor location works well and the movies shows a dark, miserable-looking world that suits much of the movie. August’s home media offerings are wrapping up in a big way this week, and I hope you’ve got your wallets ready because there are a ton of releases that genre fans are going to want to add to their collections. Fulci fans should be excited for the arrival of both The House by the Cemetery and The New York Ripper in 4K, courtesy of Blue Underground, and Severin is having their own Fulci fiesta this week, too, with their releases of Aenigma, Demonia as well as the recent documentary Fulci for Fake.
Scream Factory also has a killer lineup of titles headed home on Tuesday, including the Collector’s Edition of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie and the Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for August 25th include Dead Pit, The Beast Must Die, The Last Victim, Live Feed, Gemini, Hallucinations, and Alien Scum.

In regards to the dark, the world of giallo is still one that I’m fumbling around in, trying to navigate my way through countless films and directors. As I settle in, I’ve started to make out shapes and patterns; that is, until I saw Sergio Martino’s All the Colors of the Dark (1972), a trippy, surreal head trip beautifully restored in an overflowing Blu-ray from Severin Films. My eyes are still adjusting to what they’ve seen.
I’m still fumbling around with Martino, though; other than this, I’ve only seen Torso (’73) and Screamers (’79), and I enjoyed the latter’s high adventure/splattery mermen over the straight ahead straight razor-isms of the former. Colors is easily my favorite of the three, as it offers a heady mix of hallucinogenic horror with a giallo backbone, all done with ferocious style.

We have a busy week of horror and sci-fi entertainment releases to look forward to, especially for those of you cult and indie horror fans out there. Grindhouse Releasing is bringing Lucio Fulci’s insane Cat in the Brain to Blu-ray, and the recent indie thriller Road Games is getting a release on July 12th as well, courtesy of Scream Factory. This summer, Grindhouse Releasing will unleash a three-disc Blu-ray of Cat in the Brain—directed by and starring Lucio Fulci—and they will also bring the horror film to cities nationwide with a theatrical re-release beginning in June and ending in August:

Italian horror is alive and well in the meaty trailer for Virus: Extreme Contamination. As a reviewer I tend not to follow the opinion’s of others – no matter how many people share the same opinion or how many times I’m told said opinion is true. I kind of wish I’d listened to everyone else.

Dario Argento’s Dracula (2012)
Director: Dario Argento
Screenplay: Dario Argento, Enrique Cerezo, Stefano Piani, Antonio Tentori, Bram Stoker
Cast: Thomas Kretschmann (Dracula), Marta Gastini (Mina), Asia Argento (Lucy), Unax Ugalde (Jonathan), Rutger Hauer (Van Helsing)
It took me a while to warm up to Francis Ford Coppola’s take on Dracula from 1992. No cape, and morphing from an old guy in a geisha outfit to one of the Doobie Brothers in a Victorian pimp suit. I was accustomed to the refined stylings of Christopher Lee and Frank Langella. I’m glad, because even more takes on the classic vampire tale would follow, and being a purist just isn’t conducive to having an open mind.
There have been Italian vampire tales before, but never by the master of the giallo himself. I’ve got a good friend who summed up Italian horror cinema perfectly.

Dracula 3D
Directed by Dario Argento
Written by Dario Argento, Enrique Cerezo, Stefano Piani, Antonio Tentori
Italy, 2012
More than his fellow giallo maestros (Bava, Fulci, Martino, and others), Dario Argento has had to live and work in the burdensome shadow of his earlier successes. After nearly two decades of exceptional films boasting glorious cinematic artistry and blood-soaked thrills, Argento established quite the reputation. In recent years, though, since 1993′s Trauma, these prior landmarks of genre perfection have become a distressing caveat added to nearly every negative criticism of his newest release: “Ah, Argento, how far he’s fallen. Remember when….” His latest offering, Dracula 3D, now available on an American-issued 3D Blu-ray (an Italian disc, still playable in the Us, has been out for while), is no exception. Does it rank with Suspiria, Tenebre, Deep Red, or Opera? No. But is it as bad as some detractors would suggest? Certainly not.

In a world plagued by fashion ad vampires, horror icon Dario Argento is going back to the classic days of movie monsters, and injecting the blood and sex of contemporary society with Dracula 3D. The first trailer and poster for the film have just arrived with King Kong star Thomas Kretschmann playing the title vampire and Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Hobo with a Shotgun) hunting him as Van Helsing. This looks pretty silly and cheap, but that also seems to add to the charm of a film that wouldn't seem out of place in the 80s. At the very least, this has to be more entertaining than anything from The Twilight Saga, right? Here's the first trailer for Dario Argento's Dracula 3D, originally from Apple: And here's the poster that harkens back to a classic artistic style: Horror icon Dario Argento (Suspiria, Opera) directs Dracula 3D from a script he wrote with Antonio Tentori,...

According to http://www.horrormovie.it/ new details have emerged about Dario Argento’s new project, a remake of Dracula, in 3D. In 2010, Argento hinted that he would try his hand at turning a classic horror novel into a film, and later revealed that the novel would be Dracula with a screenplay adaptation written by Antonio Tentori. The Italian director promised that his take on Bram Stoker’s novel “will be a bloody, strong film.” There is no word, as of yet, on who will star in the movie, but filming will begin in Hungary in February and then move to Italy. Balsorano Castle, as seen in the film Crypt Of The Vampire located in Southern Italy, was amongst the places sited as possible filming locations. In more unexpected news, Dracula 3D will shift focus and take a departure from the Victorian Era, and instead will be portrayed in modern times.
