Perhaps it’s only appropriate that a film detailing one of Los Angeles’ most infamous unsolved murder cases would have a long journey to the screen, but Brad Furman’s “City of Lies” had a bumpier road than most. Detailing LAPD detective Russell Poole’s investigation into the 1997 murder of Christopher Wallace – a.k.a. rapper the Notorious B.I.G. – Furman’s film was initially slated for theatrical release back in 2018, only for a lawsuit and financial trouble from the film’s initial distributor to leave it languishing for years.
Now picked up by Saban Films, “City of Lies” hit a limited number of theaters last weekend, with a wide VOD rollout set for early next month. For Furman, who notched successes with the Matthew McConaughey starrer “The Lincoln Lawyer” and Bryan Cranston’s “The Infiltrator” before embarking on the long process of bringing “City of Lies” to light,...

It’s no secret that the Brad Furman-directed City of Lies has had a rocky journey to the big screen. It’s played an exhausting game of musical chairs with distributors and a lawsuit involving the film’s location manager and the film’s star Johnny Depp. Through all, it still managed to make a theatrical debut as theaters begin to open the doors after a year of navigating the pandemic.
Based on the book, LAbyrinth, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Randall Sullivan and adapted by Christian Contreras, Saban Films released City of Lies on 501 screens across the country and the dramatic crime thriller revolving around the real-life death of hip hop icon Notorious B.I.G. managed to earn estimated $275,049 in its opening weekend with a per screen average of $549. This is not bad at all.

, let alone when that true crime book is about two of the most notorious unsolved murders in human history, and the movie adapted from it was directed by Brad Furman (a solid base-hitter who’s still swinging for another “The Lincoln Lawyer”) and stars Johnny Depp as a retired LAPD detective who says things like “I’m obsessed with the truth, that’s my sickness.” Even if “City of Lies” hadn’t sat on the shelf for the last 30 months — its planned release in September 2018 was allegedly postponed because of a lawsuit that the film’s location manager filed against Depp — it wouldn’t exactly be a huge surprise that this under-baked and overstretched police thriller was a total waste of the roadkill-like hairpiece that Shea Whigham wears in it.

L.A. Controversial: Furman Revisits the Wallace Murder in Mediocre Adaptation
Whatever the likely combination of reasons for the three-year delay in its US theatrical release, including merging distributors, the legal woes of its lead star, political corruption, or an ongoing pandemic, City of Lies, the latest venture from director Brad Furman, is intrinsically a compromised product.
Based on the 2002 expose LAbyrinth from journalist Randall Sullivan, this daring hypothesis outlines a comprehensive case against those likely responsible for the murders of Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G. in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Whatever the likely combination of reasons for why this film adaptation doesn’t work, including distracting stunt casting, a cliché-ridden script, a pseudo fabrication of certain people or events, and a director with a penchant for mainstream semantics, also bolsters the film’s intrinsically compromised nature.…...

The Brad Furman-directed crime thriller City of Lies has had quite a journey, but the Saban Films release finally hits theaters today before dropping on digital and on demand April 9.
Based on the book, LAbyrinth, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Randall Sullivan and adapted by Christian Contreras, City of Lies follows the investigation into the infamous murder of iconic rap artist Christopher Wallace aka the hip hop legend Notorious B.I.G.
Oscar and Emmy winner Forest Whitaker stars as Jack Jackson, a journalist who teams up with LAPD detective Russell Poole (Johnny Depp), who spent nearly 20 years trying to solve the murder. The two of them try to find the truth. They explore why the case remains cold — and why a secret division of the LAPD is seemingly set on keeping it that way.
It’s not a lie that City of Lies went through a lot to make its way to the theaters.

Who shot Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls? It’s crazy to think that a Hollywood movie can solve a homicide the Los Angeles Police Department couldn’t crack. But conspiracy-minded “City of Lies” — which opens 24 years and 10 days after the rap legend’s murder on March 9, 1997 — suggests that the Notorious B.I.G.’s death isn’t unsolved at all, but a cover-up of epic proportions.
According to buck-the-system screenwriter Christian Contreras (who cooks up lines like “There’s no such thing as law. There’s never been one that can overcome man’s nature”), the LAPD had a pretty good idea of who did it and deliberately chose to let the case go cold. That’s a bombshell if true and downright irresponsible if not — and not this critic’s place to speculate as to which — although one thing is certain: Such claims should make for a far more...

More than a year ago, the producers at Big Fish Entertainment — the company behind A&E’s hit “Live P.D.” — started talking about ways to create a program timed to the 10th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death. Surely interest would be high, given the King of Pop’s musical legacy and the circumstances of his untimely demise.
Big Fish optioned the 2012 book “Untouchable: The Strange Life and Tragic Death of Michael Jackson,” by Rolling Stone contributor Randall Sullivan, with an eye toward developing an unscripted series. The company, eager to expand into the scripted business, also found writers to develop a version of the book’s narrative as a limited series.

On The Curse of Oak Island this week, the team continue to uncover incredible discoveries in Smith’s Cove, adding to the intrigue surrounding an anomaly found last week when they unearthed a concrete wall that could be evidence of Roman presence on the island. They still have no answers as to why a concrete wall five inches thick and three feet high was buried roughly three feet below water in Smith’s Cove or by whom. What is known is that it was set under the low tide level without metal parts, with engineering similar to that which the Romans […]

Johnny Depp was sued Monday for allegedly punching a location manager who was trying to enforce permit restrictions on the set of upcoming crime film “City of Lies.”
Gregg “Rocky” Brooks alleges the incident occurred on April 13, 2017, when Depp was filming outside the Barclay Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The film, which then called “LAbyrinth,” is based on the book of that name by Randall Sullivan, and chronicles police investigations of the deaths of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.
According to Brooks, the production had a permit to shoot until 7 p.m. outside the hotel, and until 10 p.m. inside. Brooks said he was asked to get the permit extended to accommodate Depp, who wanted to direct a longer version of the scene with two friends. Brooks says he was able to get the permit extended twice, but that at 11 p.m. the permit official said they would have to wrap it up.

Lionsgate’s Johnny Depp-starring movie “City of Lies” has been licensed to startup distributor Sweet Charm Media for release in China. The deal was closed at the Cannes Film Festival.
The fact-based film is directed by Brad Furman and sees Depp appear as a detective, Russell Poole, many of whose cases were not adequately solved. He began investigating the Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur murders. Poole failed to nail the killers in these cases too, but instead uncovered corruption within the Los Angeles Police Department. The film script was adapted by Christian Contreras from the book by Randall Sullivan. Production is by Good Films.
Sweet Charm, which was formed only in March, by Yoyo Qu, aims to give the film a release in the second half of the year — if possible in a day-and-day alignment with overseas outings.
“City of Lies” is to be released by Global Road Entertainment in North America on Sept.

Randall Sullivan is a rather well-known American author who has served as a journalist, a producer, and a TV personality from time to time. Primarily, he is known for a few books. The first was Labyrinth, which detailed a claim that the Lapd had covered up Suge Knight’s role in ordering the murders of both Tupac Shaku and the Notorious B.I.G. Meanwhile, the other two was The Miracle Detective, which was essentially a conversion narrative claiming that Our Lady of Medjugorje was real, and Untouchable, which focused on the personal habits of Michael Jackson. Forest Whitaker is set to join Johnny Depp in the upcoming murder investigation drama Labyrinth. The film follows the story of the investigation into the murders of rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. back in the '90s.
According to Deadline, "Depp plays a disgraced Lapd detective (Russell Poole) who is unable to solve his biggest case: the murders of the hip-hop icons. Whitaker will play the journalist who teams with the cop, each determined to find the truth, and each with a reason to seek redemption in an effort that sets them against the cops."
The movie is set to be directed by Brad Furman (The Infiltrator, The Lincoln Lawyer). The screenplay was written by Christian Contreras, and it was adapted from the book by Randall Sullivan. The script was so good that it moved from being on the Black List of best unproduced screenplays to actually being produced.
