Back in 2009, James Dashner released The Maze Runner, the first of what was to become a series of novels consisting of a main trilogy, two prequel novels, and a planned sequel trilogy, as well as a companion volume. The story is a dystopian narrative that focuses on a group of children who have to survive the Maze, but ultimately discover that the world they are in is in ruins and that there is a dark secret behind everything. The series was picked up for a live-action adaptation in 2011, and the first movie was released in 2014. Two additional movies were released, with The Death Cure ending the trilogy in 2018.
But, while it’s been just six years since the final movie of the original trilogy, The Hollywood Reporter revealed an exclusive scoop that 20th Century Studios is working on a reboot of The Maze Runner film series, although details are still very scarce.

According to THR, 20th Century Studios is looking to reboot The Maze Runner franchise based on the best-selling novels by James Dashner. The studio is currently in negotiations with Jack Paglen (Transcendence) to write the script for the new film.
The Maze Runner was released in 2014 and followed a group of memory-wiped teenagers who are trapped in a walled area known as the Glade. The only way out lies beyond an ever-changing maze, which is filled with deadly mechanical creatures. The film was followed by Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials in 2015 and Maze Runner: The Death Cure in 2018.
Before you start getting up in arms over 20th Century Studios rebooting a franchise which wrapped up less than a decade ago, sources say that this project won’t be a redo of the original story or a direct sequel. Instead, the producers hope to make it a “continuation of the story...

Jack Paglen (Transcendence) is in talks to write a new Maze Runner film for 20th Century Studios, Deadline can confirm.
While details as to the plot of the film are under wraps for the moment, it’s described as a continuation of the story of the last three films, released between 2014 and 2018, rather than a direct sequel.
Based on the dystopian YA book series by James Dashner, The Maze Runner takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where a group of young survivors must navigate deadly mazes, treacherous landscapes, and sinister organizations as they uncover the truth about their past and fight for their freedom. Wes Ball directed the original 2014 film, as well as sequels Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), all ahead of Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario starred in the films, which grossed over $948 million worldwide in total.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Exclusive: The Gotham Group has launched an Nft-focused Emerging Technologies department, with the Hollywood management and production company tapping longtime manager Matt Shichtman to run it, while elevating him to partner.
The division already has a first project, with production underway on the adult animated series Alien to Me. It will be fully Web3 with only those that purchase NFTs getting access to the series, which hails from Shichtman-repped comedian and digital artist Connor Kerrigan and Melbourne-based animation studio Pixel’s Andrew Goldsmith and Monique Mulcahy.
“While studios have had considerable success over the past decade consolidating market power, Web3 has moved swiftly in the opposite direction, decentralizing networks, building grassroots communities, increasing transaction speeds, decreasing fees, and pushing towards carbon neutrality, a goal many blockchains have now achieved,” Shichtman said. “With over $25 billion in Nft sales in 2021, we couldn’t be more excited to leverage the power this new...

Exclusive: Lunch Lady, the graphic novel series that had been set up at Universal Pictures, has moved to Sony Pictures with a new writer, Fred Wolf. The series, from writer-illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka, is described as a PG-13 family/action comedy with a female superhero.
What we know about it: The protagonist is described as “a spatula-wielding crime fighter,” a school cafeteria server who clandestinely dishes out justice with the assistance of a friend. Meanwhile, three kids figure out something is up and set out to prove that she is living two lives — one as a fierce crime fighter and the other as a mild-mannered woman who serves up mashed potatoes and green beans.
Lunch Lady has several titles in the series — hence a possible franchise for the studio. David Beaubaire and Sara Rastogi are overseeing the project for Sony.

Exclusive: Grace VanderWaal, who at 12 years old won American’s Got Talent two years ago playing the ukulele and singing her original songs, has beat out 700 other girls to take the lead in Disney’s Stargirl — one of the first original films that will go through the company’s new streaming platform. VanderWaal, who is supporting her new single “Clearly” by opening for the band Imagine Dragons’s Evolve tour today, once again stole the director and producer’s hearts.
VanderWaal is making her acting debut with this film which is being directed by Julia Hart who just finished polishing the script with her partner Jordan Horowitz from the screen adaptation by Kristin Hahn.
“I knew she was Stargirl almost immediately,” said Hart. “The world knows what a talented performer she is, and I cannot wait for everyone to see just how many sides there are to this special and magical young woman.

The new trailer for the second installment of the Maze Runner saga, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, was released today. The trailer promises a darker, more politically-charged world than was delivered in the first film. While the use-your-wits to survive plot is still there, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials appears as though it will flesh out both the characters and their environs, as well as deliver a bit more development of the political intrigue only touched on in the first film.
As of right now, I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and assume it will deliver the goods and rise above being little more than the Hunger Games rip-off the first film was. Then again, I could be wrong.

Following the exciting presentation at CinemaCon last week, 20th Century Fox released some new details for their upcoming releases. Check out the official synopses along with some photos for all their 2015 and 2016 films.
The highlight of the event was the must-see film of 2015 – Ridley Scott’s The Martian.
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, Nasa and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold,...

Bruce Willis is (once again) set for the lead role in the ensemble drama "Bandits" based on the Elmore Leonard 1987 novel of the same name.
The black comedy is set in New Orleans and Willis will play Jack Delaney, an ex-con struggling to stay on the straight path working in his brother's funeral home. He soon meets a gorgeous lapsed nun freshly returned from Nicaragua who wants his help to smuggle out a beautiful young woman with leprosy.
Said woman has an ex-lover who is a mad Somoza-esque colonel who wants to kill her for possibly infecting him. He is also fleecing rich Americans to help fund the contras. As a result, Delaney sets out with the ex-nun and an ex-cop to stop the colonel and get away with his fortune.
Mitch Glazer ("Magic City," "Rock The Kasbah") is penning the script while Randall Emmett, George Furla, Lee Stollman and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein will produce.

Three new pictures bow this weekend with Fox’s sci-fi action thriller The Maze Runner leading the way. It opens tonight at 10 Pm, having already made a strong bow overseas to heavily outpace Divergent and gross $8.5M so far. After this weekend’s bow in the states, the picture will likely have grossed its production budget back — said to be around $35M+ but they got a tax incentive from shooting in Louisiana which brought the net cost down. That’s not including marketing and distribution costs, but this should be yet another profitable film for Fox (which has been on a roll). CGI was also handled out of the U.S. (in Vancouver) through a company called Method. Here’s the thing, Divergent was heavily skewed female so the question is will the boys come out for Fox the same way girls (who tend to go to movies in packs) came out for March 2014 release?...

Roadside Attractions has released three new images and trailer for their upcoming film, Life Of Crime.

Starring Jennifer Aniston, John Hawkes, yasiin bey, Mark Boone Junior, Isla Fisher, Will Forte, and Tim Robbins, Life Of Crime is packed with the outrageously eccentric characters, black comedy and unexpected twists that earned Leonard a reputation as one of America’s sharpest and funniest crime writers.

“Tracking Shot” is a monthly featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at a dozen or so projects that are moments away from lensing. This February we’ve got a slew of projects that we feel are worth signaling out: we start with a sequel (and pictured above) we find The Raid 2 (also known as Berandal) which has set up shop with the same producing team, star player and writer/director Gareth Huw Evans. Sony Pictures Classics backed the film prior to production. This picks up two hours after the first installment ends.

Okay, here goes. John Hawkes, one of the best character actors around these days, has agreed to star in Switch, a film based on Elmore Leonard's 1978 crime thriller The Switch, which is the predecessor to 1992's Rum Punch, which served as the source material for Jackie Brown, which is the 1997 flick that all the cool kids like to remind you is Quentin Tarantino's undersung masterpiece, which, by the way, it totally is.
In Switch, set 15 years before Jackie Brown, Hawkes will play Louis Gara, the role played by Robert De Niro in Tarantino's flick. Joining him will be Yasiin Bey (aka, the artist formerly known as Mos Def), who will play Ordell Robbie, the character who you may remember was first portrayed by the artist still known as Samuel L. Jackson.
The plot of Switch finds Ordell and Louis getting mixed up in a kidnapping plot that goes horribly awry.
