Over the past few months, Netflix has been busy treating its audience to new big-budget projects, from the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen to the much-hyped 3 Body Problem and Ripley with Andrew Scott. But as high-profile as Netflix's premieres are, they seem to pale in comparison to what competing streaming services are offering.

When millions of Americans came together to marvel at the stunning solar eclipse, we saw a rare moment of unity amid the darkness of a country torn apart by polarization. Bookending the same week? The release of action-thriller “Civil War,” now the number one film in America and A24 Films’ most successful release yet. Set against the backdrop of an imagined second American Civil War, the film follows photojournalists led by Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), as they capture the horrors of a failed country.
After previewing the film, I fixated on the plot’s open space left by writer and director Alex Garland. For audiences wondering what leads us to this point of no return, Garland deliberately shoots back with blanks, inviting us to fill in the rest.
I believe that it matters how we fill those gaps. Films of this magnitude, especially on a radioactive topic, set a narrative in our culture.

It's the most expensive movie A24 has ever made and is currently the talk of the industry. But what makes it so special?
The plot
The movie is set in the near future where a third term president is in charge of America. During his time in office, the country has become increasingly divided. Now it's a race against time as a group of heroic journalists desperately try to reach the White House before rebel forces do. Will they make it in time? Or is America doomed?
Against this backdrop, the film explores questions such as what it really means to be a US citizen.
It's an action flick, but so much more. Amidst the drama, there are deeper layers of meaning and questions for philosophical cinephiles to ponder. It's also been praised for its stunning scenery, so there really is something for everyone.
Who's starring in it ?

Tense, disturbing, riveting, Alex Garland’s dystopian film Civil War examines an existential threat preying on the American sub-conscious: What would happen if the political and social divisions cleaving the United States ultimately collapse the nation into the abyss? What if the wars of rhetoric, of culture, of values, cause a series of irreparable breaks, whole states secede and we descend into an actual war?
These are menacing questions made palpable because many of us feel we’re already at the brink. As we swirl in a civil war of ideas, a civil war of ideologies, a civil war in public discourse and policy that has created two completely different frames of reality, more than 40 percent of Americans polled just two years ago by YouGov and The Economist said they believe the nation could turn so far on itself that a civil war, a military conflict, is possible within this decade.

Kirsten Dunst’s Civil War featured her husband Jesse Plemons in one of the most disturbing scenes in the film. Fans were terrified yet impressed by Plemons’ chilling performance, but director Alex Garland shared that the scene was meant for another actor. When the original actor became unavailable a few days before the shoot, it was Dunst who suggested Plemons for the role. Garland felt incredibly lucky to have the Breaking Bad actor on board the film.

Kirsten Dunst takes on the role of the resilient photojournalist Lee Smith, in her new film Civil War, embarking on a perilous journey to Washington, D.C., amidst escalating chaos. Alongside her, actor Nick Offerman assumes the role of the US president, a character that has sparked discussions about parallels with the former President.

When asked about the resemblance between the two figures, Dunst dismissed these comparisons, characterizing the president depicted in the film as an emblematic of fascism within the film’s narrative landscape.

When Stephen McKinley Henderson appears on screen, you always know you’re in good hands. The presence of the beloved character actor all but guarantees that he’s going to pass on some eye-opening wisdom and make you feel something, which explains why his two-time co-star Cailee Spaeny considers him the Yoda-like figure in her life. The two Missouri natives previously worked together on Alex Garland’s gem of a sci-fi miniseries, Devs, and now they’ve reunited on the big screen in the English filmmaker’s critically acclaimed anti-war thriller, Civil War.

British writer-director Alex Garland has form when it comes to depicting the apocalypse, having previously written the 2002 zombie classic 28 Days Later. With his latest film, he turns his attention to the US, revealing a country torn apart by a cleverly unspecified Civil War, observing the ensuing horror through the pointedly objective eyes of a group of embedded war photographers. By turns thrilling, terrifying and deeply moving, it’s a profoundly provocative piece of work that demands to be seen.
After a brief prologue with the US President (Nick Offerman) psyching himself up for a press briefing, we learn that present-day America is deep in the throes of a catastrophic Civil War, after the states of California and Texas both seceded from the Union and joined forces, making...

Writer/director Alex Garland explored the near future in two of his previous three features. In Ex MacHina he pondered the possibilities of emerging technology and the rise of sentient artificial beings. Then in Annihilation, he tackled the results of alien contact and the impact on the ecology and the military response to it. With this new film, Garland goes “back to the future”, though it’s not centuries ahead, but rather a time that could be “just around the corner”, spawned from events happening right now. And it’s not gizmos or ETs that propel the cautionary fable. No, it’s the dangers of hatred and intolerance that divide the country and lead to a Civil War. It’s not the first time, but it could be the last…

Alex Garland belongs to a certain class of filmmakers that fascinates me because, regardless of the more positive or negative opinions about his films, all his narratives have an undeniable impact and are practically impossible not to debate. Personally, I believe that the worst type of movie is one that doesn’t provoke any kind of discussion… those that quickly fade into oblivion. A trait that doesn’t fit into the career of the mind behind Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men, and now, Civil War.

For someone who’s about to release a cautionary tale about the current state of America, Civil War star Kirsten Dunst is remarkably unfazed.
Alex Garland’s critically acclaimed action-thriller explores a near future in which our own present-day sound bites involving civil war and secession actually came to pass, and now rebel forces are inching toward commandeering the White House from its dictatorial president (Nick Offerman). Dunst plays Lee Smith, a seasoned and tenacious war photographer who reluctantly becomes a mentor to Cailee Spaeny’s aspiring photographer, Jessie Cullen. The details of American politics do not concern Alex Garland in Civil War.
Despite the controversy it’s already courted about its supposed prescience, the unsettling feature from the British filmmaker doesn’t predict a future based on the country’s current two-party system. Garland is far more interested in the United States’ self-regarding exceptionalism, its belief in its own safety from executive instability. He is fascinated by how factionalism instigates conflict and how no nation is immune to the results of its violence.
Premiering at SXSW, Civil War explores these preoccupations from the perspective of a group of journalists as they chronicle life in their war-torn country while traveling to Washington, D.C. The press are the good guys, but also kind of the bad guys, in Alex Garland’s virtuosic “Civil War,” a jarring ground-level account of what a near-future disunification of the United States might look like. Intended as a wake-up call, the long-fuse thriller — which starts slow and snowballs to a jaw-dropping raid on Washington, D.C. — embeds viewers alongside a dedicated team of journalists making their way to the Capitol while the country unravels around them. It’s the most upsetting dystopian vision yet from the sci-fi brain that killed off all of London for the zombie uprising depicted in “28 Days Later,” and one that can’t be easily consumed as entertainment. A provocative shock to the system, “Civil War” is designed to be divisive. Ironically, it’s also meant to bring folks together.
Led by veteran war photographer Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), the tight crew of journalists are total pros.

David Ayer's 2016 DC Comics film "Suicide Squad" is a horrendous mess. It started with an interesting enough premise -- imprisoned supervillains are teamed up and forced to perform morally dubious acts of heroism in exchange for lighter sentences -- but the story wasn't clear and the editing was atrocious. Many were keen to see Will Smith play the supervillain Deadshot, while others were fond of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, but few were pleased with Ayer's vision of the Joker (Jared Leto) -- an updated, tattooed fiend who resembled Ninja from Die Antwoord more than he did any of the previous comic book iterations of the character.
The editing process for "Suicide Squad" was notoriously hellish. The film's first editor, John Gilroy, left the project early on and had to pass editing duties to the uncredited Oscar winner Lee Smith (who cut several of Christopher Nolan's movies). Infamously,...

Despite years of campaigning, lofty Twitter proclamations, and a burning desire to share his ideal vision for a film project he says got out of hand, David Ayer is “done” with DC Studios. In other words, he is abandoning hope of ever releasing a Director’s Cut of 2016’s Suicide Squad.
Speaking about the ongoing drama surrounding Suicide Squad on X/Twitter, a fan asked Ayer point-blank if he’s still fighting to release an extended version of the villain-centric ensemble film. “Nope. Christopher Nolan has made a career for himself for his unconventional narrative structures of storytelling. His 11 films have ranged from psychological thrillers to science fiction epics to “The Dark Knight” trilogy, and have garnered a total of 36 Academy Award nominations, five of which for Nolan individually. With his latest directed epic “Oppenheimer” breaking box office records and gathering massive awards buzz since its release on July 21 by Universal Pictures, let’s break down Nolan’s five Oscar nominations for three of his movies.
Nolan’s first recognition at the Oscars came for his second feature “Memento,” based on his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story “Memento Mori,” both released in 2001. The psychological mystery thriller written and directed by Nolan stars Guy Pearce as a man with anterograde amnesia and short-term memory loss as he tries to solve the murder of his wife. David Ayer Says James Gunn ‘Told Me’ the ‘Suicide Squad’ Ayer Cut ‘Would Have Its Time to Be Shared’
David Ayer is keeping hope alive for his “Suicide Squad” director’s cut, dubbed the “Ayer Cut” on social media. In a recent post on X, the director informed his fans that new DC Studios boss James Gunn told him that the Ayer Cut “would have its time to be shared.” Ayer provided no further information.
Warner Bros. and Gunn’s representative did not respond to Variety’s request for comment.
“What’s your advice on how to navigate this situation with grace?” Ayer posted in response to a user who questioned why he was was still promoting his version of “Suicide Squad” seven years after the theatrical cut’s release. “There’s a genuine curiosity and interest from a lot of people. And I’m aware there is another group of people that have fun mocking the film. Your comment is a perfect example of how many are magnetically...

Ask me for a movie genre that best exemplifies filmmaking done right on every level — particularly in the most fundamental aspects — and chances are I'm showing you a highly-acclaimed historical epic. There's just something about the incredibly vast canvass afforded by these sweeping, big-budget stories that lend themselves to an attention to detail rarely matched by any other production. If one of the goals of cinema is complete immersion, then few can even hope to compare to the sense of texture and immediacy provided by these period pieces. Dialogue tends to take on...

The films in the running for the 2023 Best Film Editing Oscar are “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Tar,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10/3) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Top Gun: Maverick” (37/10), “Elvis” (9/2), “The Banshees of Inisherin” (9/2), and “Tar” (9/2).
Five of the six individual cutters competing for the gold this year are first-time nominees, making for the category’s highest newcomer rate since 2018. In that case, Lee Smith emerged victorious on his third bid for “Dunkirk.” The current group of rookies consists of Eddie Hamilton (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Paul Rogers (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Monika Willi (“Tar”), and “Elvis” duo Jonathan Redmond and Matt Villa.
Redmond and Villa would be the 18th pair of editors to win this award together and the third to do so within the last decade, after Alfonso Cuarón and...

On February 1, the American Heart Association had its annual Go Red for Women Red Dress Collection concert to raise awareness about heart disease. Along with musical performances, celebrities modeled red dresses at the runway show.
Amanda Warren, 40, who starred in Gossip Girl, wore a red v-neck dress that accentuated her waist. Her makeup and accessories were very subtle for the event.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Warren stressed the importance of women’s health.
“My message to women regarding our health is to just take care of yourself, take after yourself and Google things and see what’s what,” she urged. “And when you have more questions try to find your nearby health clinic, a community clinic where you can talk to someone, maybe your nearby pharmacist. Just make sure that you’re taking care of yourself, if you don’t feel well, reach out and be aware. And just,...

Spotted: there's a new "Gossip Girl" queen bee on the rise, and she's wasting no time kicking off her hostile takeover. After an explosive season one finale, HBO Max's "Gossip Girl" returned with more chaotic drama on Dec. 1, and this time around, Julien (Jordan Alexander) isn't the one running things over at Constance. In season two, she has a hard time holding onto her influence with her sidekick turned enemy Monet (Savannah Lee Smith) gunning for her No. 1 spot.
"We kind of wanted the cold hard b*tch that would not stop at anything to get to the top."
The last season of "Gossip Girl" attempted to redefine the infamous high school mean girl trope with some overly vindictive ploys orchestrated by Julien's minions Monet and Luna (Zión Moreno), but one of them has upgraded to a more sinister role in season two. With Luna and Julien on the...

Haven't you heard? "Gossip Girl" is back for another chaotic season on HBO Max, and we've got all the deets.
The first season ends with a disastrous New Year's Eve celebration that leaves Julien (Jordan Alexander) cleaning up a major mess with her ex Obie (Eli Brown) and sister Zoya (Whitney Peak). Not to mention, the will-they-won't-they throuple with Aki (Evan Mock), Audrey (Emily Alyn Lind), and Max (Thomas Doherty) finally get the green light (though it surely won't be smooth sailing for them). The biggest surprise of them all, however - aside from Gossip Girl teaming up with Julien to expose everyone's dirty little secrets - is Monet (Savannah Lee Smith) gunning for the queen bee title now that Julien has turned over a new leaf, but there are plenty more shocking reveals ahead in season two, so buckle up for the ride.

When a film brings in many of Hollywood's most talented people to work on every technical component, it's hard not to have high expectations. Empire of Light has acclaimed British filmmaker Sam Mendes as both writer & director, beloved cinematographer Roger Deakins as the Director of Photography, award-winning Lee Smith in the editing room, and acclaimed composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross on the score, not to mention a cast with a few prominent names – there's an interesting mix with less known actors in the ensemble. Many of these people are Oscar winners, along with so many other awards. The only unknown variable – Mendes writing his first-ever solo screenplay – turns out to be the only divisive factor… ›››

Roughly a year ago, Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast,” launched out of Telluride, and there was something about that film’s emotional expansiveness and the irresistible pull of its unapologetic nostalgia that made it clear it was going to be a force to be reckoned with at the Oscars.
I got the same sense watching Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light” at its Telluride premiere this past weekend. It has a similar open heartedness even if the setting for the movie is an English seaside town and not the war-torn streets of Northern Ireland.
Cinema seeps through “Empire of Light.” Mendes’ latest doesn’t just swoon for the images that flicker across screens; it also pays tribute to the physical buildings that house our most cherished artform and the sense of escapism that gets triggered every time you sit down in one of those palaces. Chicago – The eclectic coming-of-age love story, “Call Me By Your Name” topped the nominations list with eight for the 2017 Chicago Film Critics Association (Cfca) Film Awards, to be announced on Wednesday, December 13th. Director Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of Andre Aciman’s novel garnered nods for Best Picture, Guadagnino for Best Director, and acting noms for Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg and Timothee Chalamet.
The rest of the field for Best Picture has a variety of genres and themes. Christopher Nolan’s epic “Dunkirk” shares the stage with Greta Gerwig’s intent autobiographical “Lady Bird,” Guillermo Del Toro’s magical “The Shape of Water” and the strange-but-heralded “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The symbolic horror of “Get Out” got first time director Jordan Peele a nomination (joining first timer Greta Gerwig), the late Harry Dean Stanton was recognized for Best Actor in “Lucky,” and Willem Dafoe got a Best Supporting Actor nomination for “The Florida Project.

A sound editor before he transitioned to picture editing, Dunkirk‘s Lee Smith has spent decades honing his ability to produce an elevated cinematic experience for the eye and for the ear. Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, which recounts the evacuation of more than 300,000 Allied soldiers from a beach in Northern France in May and June of 1940, finds the director working in a different register. From Julien Allen at Reverse Shot:For one thing, the events being dramatized in Dunkirk are not a leap of a storyteller's imagination, but recorded facts. Nolan's challenge is constricted by history rather than by science; and it is complicated, morally and artistically, by the need to do justice to real life events. For another, Nolan's obsession with exposition—a painful burden for his films to carry, particularly his highest concept pictures such as Inception and Interstellar—is nowhere to be seen. The story of these stranded men, sitting ducks on the barren beaches, is stripped down to a bare exercise in survival, in which the denial of exposition is demonstrative almost to the point of abstraction. The...

Sometimes when you have been through hell and back, there isn’t anything you can say to properly convey the emotions and the experience. Without saying much, Christopher Nolan tries to express the raw emotions of war by dropping the viewer into the scenario as opposed to explaining the how and the why of the situation. Because at the end of the day, the brave soldiers at the frontlines aren’t given a suitable reason or explanation to justify possible death. Their instincts kick in and they have to fight to survive.
Dunkirk is an emotional experiment forcing the viewer to connect with characters with little backstory or dialogue. In fact, the majority of the film is soldiers silently fighting towards a way out. The importance of time is crucial – so much so that the film opens with information placing how long each of the storylines takes place. Nolan and...

When it was announced that filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s next project was going to be a World War II epic, it was hard not to respond with some degree of snark that the director had finally gone all in on getting the Academy to notice him. Well, Oscar damn well might come calling this time for Nolan, since I’ve seen this film, and Dunkirk is a monumental work. In many ways it’s Nolan’s finest hour. Harrowing, impeccably made, and a must see in IMAX, it’s the best movie of 2017 so far. Awards will be coming Dunkirk’s way before all is said and done. This one not only lives up to the hype, it exceeds it. Opening Friday, it’s an absolute must see. The film is an historical war drama about the famous evacuation of Dunkirk. Allied soldiers from Belgium, the Britain, and France were...

Christopher Nolan and the Oscars have a love-hate relationship. He’s been nominated for only three Oscars, two for Original Screenplay: “Memento” in 2000 and big-scale epic “Inception” in 2010. That year, he was also nominated as a producer of “Inception,” which followed the surprising omission of “The Dark Knight” for Best Picture contention in 2009. That pushed the Academy to change its rules to allow more Best Picture slots, which might encourage more people around the world to watch the Oscars.

From first frame to last, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk is a monumental achievement, a World War II epic of staggering visual spectacle (see it in IMAX if you can) that hits you like a shot in the heart. Leave it to a filmmaking virtuoso at the peak of his powers to break both new ground and all the rules – who else would make a triumphant war film about a crushing Allied defeat? And who but Nolan, born in London to a British father and an American mother, would tackle WWII without America in it?...

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that tickets for 70Mm engagements of director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic action thriller Dunkirk will go on sale at 9:00 a.m. Edt, Wednesday, July 5, two days prior to when tickets go on sale for regular engagements of the film.
The early on-sale date will give moviegoers their first chance to purchase tickets to view the film in 70Mm, which offers unparalleled image quality and digital sound. The release of Dunkirk in 70Mm will be the widest in 25 years.
In anticipation of the 70Mm release, Christopher Nolan captured much of the film with IMAX’s extremely high-resolution 2D film cameras, which captures the world of the film with greater scope and breathtaking image quality. Audiences will feel they are a part of the race against time to rescue 400,000 British and Allied troops trapped by enemy forces on the beaches of Dunkirk in World War II.
