- In the 1960s, he was the top editor at Sport, a monthly magazine. In 1972, he became editorial director at the Book-of-the-Month Club, and eventually became the company's president, chairman, and chief executive. Later he joined the Viking Penguin publishing house as an editor, and became publisher and editor-in-chief before retiring in 1998.
- He was the co-author of football star Gale Sayers' autobiography "I Am Third", which was the inspiration for the TV movie "Brian's Song".
- He served in the Navy in WWII, and graduated from Boston University. He moved to New York and became a freelance writer, contributing articles to Sport and other magazines.
