Smells likes something is cooking between Gossip Girl star Blake Lively and Brian J. Smith. TV Line is reporting that the former Stargate Universe actor will be joining the Gossip Girl cast for Season 5 as a chef named Max. He will make his first appearance during the premiere, which will be Sept. 26, but you already knew that. All of his scenes will take place in Los Angeles, which just so happens to be where Lively’s character, Serena, was spending the summer. If there isn’t some kind of goings on between them then there’s no hope for the world.
Smith is best known for playing Lt. Matthew Scott on Stargate Universe. His character was a skilled and well-trained first lieutenant. It was his breakout performance. I think he’ll find Gossip Girl to be a little bit different compared to the more dark and edgy nature of Stargate Universe.

Mark Henderson had been held captive in the Colombian jungle for three months. After his release, he'd managed to put his ordeal behind him when his former kidnapper contacted him. It led to an extraordinary journey
You can't fault Mark Henderson for enterprise. In 2003, he was kidnapped by leftist guerrillas in a remote, mountainous jungle area in the north of Colombia and held for three months. The experience would have broken many people, and few would have wanted to relive it. But as well as being a victim, Henderson is also a film-maker, and here was a powerful story, albeit a painfully personal one. When, out of the blue, he got an email from one of his kidnappers, a young Colombian called Antonio, he knew he had to go back and make a film.

This article may contain spoilers. Turning the tale on its head again, "Stargate Universe" throws us immediately into a hallucinogenic world. It seemly appears to be a peaceful world with Lt. Matthew Scott (Brian Smith) and Sgt. Greer (Jamil Walker Smith) riding a bus into the sleepy town of Cloverdale. From the moment that they step off the bus and are greeted by .dad. Col. Young (Louis Ferreira) and soon to-be .brother-in-law. Eli (David Blue), we are clued in that this is not Earth as we know it. This is no trip home using the communication stones -- it is simply not real. So while Matt goes through the motions of preparing for his wedding to Chloe (Elyse Levesque) in an illusionary haze, we are then given glimpses to what is really going on: Matt was bit by a hostile organism on ...

Taking a page from the hallucinatory “what if” stories in the vein of Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s “Normal Again,” tonight’s Sgu gave us “Cloverdale”, a character study into the mind of Lt. Matthew Scott after he’s been attacked by a hallucinatory flesh-eating organism, propelling him to a small town named Cloverdale where he’s about to marry Chloe.
The show starts with Scott coming home to Cloverdale with Greer to meet his “father” Col. Young and his future “brother-in-law” Eli. Before he reaches them, Scott is hit by a car driven by Brody. Other shipmates in this fantasy include Dr. Volker, who is the town’s pharmacist; Vanessa James, Scott’s ex and a barmaid at Brody’s; Tj as a paramedic; Col. Telford, who is the town sheriff; and Dr. Rush, who is the pastor presiding over the wedding.

If you’re anywhere near San Diego, I highly recommend going to see the new musical, Limelight: The Story of Charlie Chaplin at the La Jolla Playhouse.
Written by Tony Award winner Thomas Meehan (Hairspray, The Producers, Annie) with music and lyrics by Christopher Curtis, it follows Chaplin’s life from his early days in London, his rise to be the greatest film star in the world and his downfall from scandal.
The show is fantastic and one reasons for that is its star, Rob McClure. He plays Chaplin and from the moment he walks on stage to the minute the show is over, you will have witnessed something special. I seriously cannot say enough good things about his performance.
I talked to Rob about the show, his research, how he got his equity card and a whole lot more! (And be sure to check out his incredible advice to actors!

Stargate Universe makes its second season premiere tonight on SyFy. What makes season two of this darker edition of the Stargate franchise even better than its freshman season? Remember those aliens that took Rush and Chloe in season one? Co-showrunner, producer, and writer Brad Wright lets us in on a spoiler for season two:
“I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say that the aliens didn’t just experiment on Rush. Let’s just say that that has a huge impact on the first half of the season. But I would also say that the process of discovery on this show isn’t, “Look at the wonderful shiny thing!” It’s, “Look at that wonderful…holy shit it’s trying to kill me.” We don’t win as easily in this show as we do the others. Because we winked a little bit in Sg-1 and in Atlantis,...

Syfy's Sgu Stargate Universe is back after its winter break this coming Friday (April 2). In advance of the much-anticipated Season 1.5 premiere, 'Space' (which we review here) the show's stars are doing the rounds chatting to the media. During a recent press call CinemaSpy got a chance to talk to two of those actors, Louis Ferreira and Brian J. Smith.
For the uninitiated, Sgu follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard the ancient ship Destiny, set on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth.
Leading the military contingent is Ferreira's character, Colonel Everett Young. We last saw him returning to Destiny after stranding the proverbial thorn-in-his-side, Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle), on an alien planet. Smith, meanwhile, plays 1st Lt. Matthew Scott. Some of the skeletons in his closet were revealed earlier in the season.

Sgu Stargate Universe, Syfy's controversial new entry in the Stargate franchise, was released last week on Blu-ray. Can the HD format bring to life a show that has so far failed to convince many fans of Stargate Sg-1 and Stargate Atlantis — including yours truly — that it is a worthy successor?

The opening credits of the series premiere of Stargate Universe show the vast expanse of space as a ship jumps out of Ftl and begins to glide closer to our screens. An orchestra of sounds play in the background with an almost menacing and forboding undertone. It doesn't take long before it's crystal clear that the show you are about to watch bears little resemblance to its predecessors. We're taken inside the ship where we see corridor after corridor coming to life, in much the same manner as that of the series premiere of Stargate Atlantis. As the camera pans from deck to deck, and lights spring to life, one thing becomes painfully clear: the ship is old, very old. And suddenly I have to remind myself that I'm not watching Battlestar Galactica. The music, even the look of the ship, instantly take me back there. I was prepared for this,...

The newly minted crew of the Destiny were spread in three different areas Friday night: the ship, Earth, and on a barren desert landscape. In other words, there was enough drama for an infinite amount of galaxies. I will break the action up the best way I can since we had flashbacks/hallucinations, Earthbacks, and present drama on the ship and offworld.
Flashback (Hallucination): Son of a Preacher Man
Some might say that Lt. Scott was hallucinating and some might consider it a flashback, but I am going to take it as a bit of both since the scene gave back story and dissolved into sand at the end of it.
In the flashbacks, Lt. Matthew Scott sits in a church crying to a priest about how he has failed the priest, the Lord, and himself. The priest later questions him about his love for a young woman. Scott...

The chaotic atmosphere and shaky camera movements are a clear departure from the previous two series; and could be great for the show’s signature distinctiveness among the three Stargate series. But Jon Lachonis gave a damn good review of the overall show, let me give you a recap of the events that transpired.
The show took the Lost route and gave us flashbacks to give insight into some of the major characters while chaos rained all around them. So to tone down the confusion I will try to put the show in linear order.

In the print ads for "Stargate Universe" (8 p.m. Central Friday, Syfy; two stars), a clean-cut young man in a military uniform runs toward the camera, away from danger. I've now seen five hours of the show and still don't feel all that invested in the the fate of 1st Lt. Matthew Scott (Brian J. Smith). Theoretically, I should -- he's one of the show's lead characters. Two characters do stand out (more on that below), but the rest of "Universe" feels like an awkward mishmash of genres and tones. Though I had been cautiously looking forward to another iteration...

I am not a big fan of the various Stargate TV shows. I liked the movie – by which I mean the Kurt Russel/James Spader one – but never really dug the television versions. I can’t explain why, and it is not a vehement hatred so don’t flame me, I was just never ‘hooked.’ The only reason this is significant now is because of how much I absolutely loved Stargate Universe.
I’m going to guess that Stargate Universe is going to appeal to the legions of Stargate fans out there, but before I even watched the pilot my condition for liking the show was that it had to appeal to someone who was completely unaware of the Stargate Universe as defined by SG1, Atlantis, and whatever constituent material that belongs to those worlds. Not because I loathe them so, because I don’t, but because I would be...

To paraphrase an advertising slogan used for the reboot of another venerable science fiction franchise earlier this year, Sgu: Stargate Universe is not your father’s Stargate. Unlike J.J. Abrams Star Trek, of course, Stargate Universe is more of a rerouting than a reboot. Nonetheless, it is distinctly different from the two series that preceded it in the Stargate franchise, Stargate Sg-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Sgu is a darker, more adult space opera.
For the benefit of those not in the know, the Stargate saga began with a 1994 theatrical film of that name featuring Kurt Russell and James Spader. The movie was subsequently adapted into a series, Stargate Sg-1, with Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks taking on the Russell and Spader roles (Colonel Jack O'Neil and Daniel Jackson, respectively). Sg-1 was the name of a four-person team of soldiers and scientists that also included Amanda Tapping's Samantha Carter...

It’s a great time to be a Science Fiction fan. There are a metric whack ton of new series and fantastic new movies on the way. One of my personally much anticipated, lusted after, new future addictions is StarGate: Universe. I was never a huge fan of the other series in the Stargate world. They just weren’t dark enough. I like my Sci-Fi gritty, violent and desperate. So StarGate: Universe definitely looks to be up my alley. It’s got a great concept, kind of like ABC’s Lost in Space. Universe is also dark and edgy and has a great cast. We’ve got the San Diego Comic-Con panel presentation with Robert Carlyle (Dr. Nicholas Rush), Brian J. Smith (1st Lt. Matthew Scott), Elyse Levesque (Chloe Armstrong), David Blue (Eli Wallace), Alaina Huffman (1st Lt. Tamara Johansen), Jamil Walker Smith (Master Sergeant Ronald Greer) and Ming-Na (Camile...

At the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, Brad Wright, co-creator of Stargate Sg-1 and Stargate Atlantis (and now Stargate Universe), asked the crowd who hadn't seen Sg-1 or Atlantis. According to Brad Wright, "about 7 people" raised their hand. The audience booed and hissed and one woman behind me asked why anyone that hadn't seen either of those shows would be there. I sheepishly lowered my hand and sat back to let Brad Wright, Robert Cooper (co-creator of Stargate Universe), Robert Carlyle, Brian J. Smith, David Blue, Alaina Huffman, Jamil Walker Smith and Ming-Na convince me why I should be watching their new show, Stargate Universe.

After seeing that trailer, I was pretty convinced this show was going to be pretty good. Brad and Robert were very clear in letting this die-hard group of fans that this new installment of the Stargate franchise was going to be different.

I've been pretty pumped for Stargate: Universe, so when the cast and producers took to the stage today I was really pleased. All of the actors are quite fantastic, and Ming-Na, even to this gay boy, was very beautiful. Of course, Brian J Smith has some guns on him that are simply...well, universal and David Blue is fast becoming my new geek crush.
Robert Wright and Bradly Cooper started things off by showing a brand spanking new trailer, revealing bit more about the pilot plot, featuring some of the FX, and showing off, however briefly, the Destiny itself. They let on that Amanda Tapping is going to be in the pilot and Richard Dean Anderson pops up later in the series.
Key for Wright and Cooper was trying to bring the series back to more of a real world feel. Less geniuses and super heroes, more of real people facing the incredible.
