Doug Bradley returns to familiar territory in Thorns, a Hellraiser-inspired movie that melds themes of religion and science with practical special effects. The horror icon was intrigued by the script and his mysterious character, Archbishop Jenkins.
“The script catches you or the script doesn’t catch you, and there was a lot about this that did straight away. It’s an interesting story; the interface here between science and religion, between exploration of outer space and inner space. It’s an apocalypse movie, basically,” Bradley explains to Bloody Disgusting.
“But at the same time, [director] Doug Schulze always says that he sees the movie as a kind of a retro homage to movies of the ’80s and to makeup effects movies.”
In his own words, Bradley describes the plot: “There is a satellite out in space that has gone rogue and is transmitting peculiar signals back to Earth, which is having strange effects on people.

An homage to films including Hellraiser, The Thing, Alien, and The Exorcist, upcoming horror movie Thorns is said to be “ripe with physical makeup effects and plenty of gore,” and Bloody Disgusting has been provided with a bloody exclusive clip this week.
From director Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below, Hellmaster, Mimesis), Thorns features horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), said to be playing a “mysterious archbishop.”
In Thorns, “An ex-priest working for NASA is sent to investigate a remote observatory that went silent after receiving a mysterious radio signal from deep space. Upon arrival, he discovers the signal has opened a portal unleashing a thorned monster. The former priest must now summon his lost faith to stop the signal from jumpstarting the end of the world.”
Additionally, Dark Planet Releasing has announced the theatrical release of Thorns, in collaboration with Emagine Entertainment, B&b Theatres, Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas, and MetaMedia.

The people behind promoting Thorns knew exactly what they were doing. A lot of the imagery I saw showed a ‘monster’ of sorts wearing mainly black and with a crown of thorns covering their eyes. Definitely inspired by Pinhead and the Hellraiser movies but they also managed to get Pinhead himself – Doug Bradley – on board to star in the movie. And you know what? It worked because that was why I wanted to check Thorns out.
The story sounds much more bizarre on paper than it actually is on screen. An ex-priest who now works for NASA (I’m guessing that doesn’t happen too often in real life?!) is sent to a remote observatory that has gone silent since receiving a radio signal from outer space.

At any Frightfest there is a certain subset of the audience which has a real appetite for gore, and for films which are unafraid of geoing to extremes in order to make their point. This isn’t Thorns’ only selling point but it’s definitely an area in which it’s aiming to make an impression – and that’s not easy in an age when a good deal comes down to money being poured into the development of impressive CGI. Director Douglas Schulze and his team are old school filmmakers, committed to practical effects, but here they prove that even on a low budget, they can make those hit home harder than anything the big studios have to offer.
To make this point early on, and establish the stakes for which he is playing, Schulze opens with a scene in which a man who is screaming about something being inside his head takes.

Of all the films at this year’s Frightfest, hybrid occult horror/science fiction tale Thorns is probably the goriest. It features some truly gruesome special effects, but there’s also a lot of interesting visual design work, and – the factor which is likely to draw in the most fans – it features a supporting turn from Doug Bradley, aka Pinhead from Clive Barker classic Hellraiser. Here he plays not the thorn-faced monster whom you’ll see in the publicity materials, but an archbishop who guides a former priest on a mission to investigate an observatory where strange things are afoot. Together with director Douglas Schulze, he joined me in the run-up to the festival to discuss the film.

An homage to films including Hellraiser, The Thing, Alien, and The Exorcist, upcoming horror movie Thorns is said to be “ripe with physical makeup effects and plenty of gore,” both of which have been on full display in all the imagery we’ve seen so far. Director Douglas Schulze has cast Doug Bradley, who achieved genre icon status by playing the Cenobite known as Pinhead in eight Hellraiser movies, as a “mysterious archbishop” in his upcoming creature feature Thorns. Schulze told Fangoria, “There’s a short list of iconic actors I’ve always wanted to work with, and Doug Bradley is near the top of that list. He brings a sense of authenticity to every role he plays—such a commanding screen presence. I felt he was the perfect choice to play a holy man obsessed with biblical prophecy. Between takes, we’d discuss one of the film’s driving themes: predestination vs. free will. We also chatted about author Lewis Carroll and the impetus for Alice in Wonderland, and his time working with Clive Barker, whose work I’m a huge fan of.“

Coming soon from filmmaker Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below, Hellmaster, Mimesis), Thorns immediately caught our attention last year, and Fangoria now shares some fresh imagery.
Schulze tells Fangoria, “The intention was to make a ‘monster’ movie as a kind of homage to the great horror cinema of the ’70s and ’80s. John Carpenter’s The Thing, Ridley Scott’s Alien, William Friedkin’s The Exorcist and, of course, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser were all inspiring.”
On that note, horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) makes an appearance in Thorns, and these new images give us our first look at Bradley’s character, a “mysterious archbishop.”

Thorns: "Something terribly wrong is happening inside NASA’s Iron Mountain observatory. It received an image from a deep space probe from what appears to be the edge of the solar system. On screen an eclipsed planet of unknown origin. Could this be the fabled 9th planet mankind has been searching for? An eerie signal transmits over the speakers, a rhythmic drone possibly a signal from the planet? But wait, something more. Deep within the signal, a faint sinister chatter. It sounds demonic. Have we discovered life across the galaxy? Down the hall, a distraught scientist, Dr. Malik. sits on the cold restroom floor looking unkept and unshaven. He hasn’t slept in days and appears deeply unnerved. Voices in his head motivate him to the mirror where he looks deep into his eyes. Wait, what is that? Something crawling in his eye? A black shape slithers across his sclera.

Coming soon from filmmaker Douglas Schulze is the indie horror movie Thorns, and Gruesome Magazine has debuted the official trailer this week.
Horror icon Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) makes an appearance in Thorns, and what’s interesting about this one is that it looks like a direct-to-video Hellraiser sequel from back in the day. The film is of course not actually connected to the franchise, but it seems to be a love letter to the long-running saga that made Doug Bradley a household name among horror fans.

After telling the story of horror fans trapped in the world of George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead, director Douglas Schulze (The Dark Below) continues his immersive horror franchise in Mimesis: Nosferatu, which will have a special screening at Monsterpalooza this April, and to celebrate, we've been provided with new images to share with Daily Dead readers.
The sequel takes place at a private school, where students are adapting a stage version of F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu that begins to take on a life of its own. Allen Maldonado, from the original Mimesis, returns in what's described as a Van Helsing-like role, and he's joined by Lance Henriksen.

In 2012, Anchor Bay released Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead. The premise that director Douglas Schulze and co-writer Jonathan D’Ambrosio have cooked up for their film The Dark Below is a bold one. This 75-minute thriller is dialogue-free, save one line at the start setting everything in motion, the story instead unfolding as a series of expressions through current duress and visually informative flashbacks while David Bateman‘s energetic score blasts you into the correct state of unease. Performances must be a bit over-the-top, with sight and sound bordering on manipulative, in order for it all to work, but we hope the result will be good enough to forgive any moments where these inevitabilities go awry. And for a time it is, our intrigue at what’s happening initially getting the better of disbelief. Sadly, that time is too short.
Kudos to the filmmakers for throwing us into the fire with frame one, though. I was genuinely interested because...

Pedestrian execution undercuts the high concept of Douglas Schulze's near-silent horror film about a young woman trapped in a freezing lake by a determined killer. While its intriguing setup sounds like it could make for a provocative and original thriller, The Dark Below never lives up to its promise, although it earns points for originality.
The story begins with Rachel (Lauren Mae Shafer) — at least that's her name as provided in the credits — being attacked by a burly man (David G.B. Brown) who strangles her, forces a drug down her throat and puts her in a wet suit....

Not to be confused with another horror film of the same name currently in production, This Dark Below is not a H.P. Lovecraft inspired film, but rather a great looking thriller in the vein of Buried.
In the film directed by Douglas Schulze, a kidnapper traps Rachel, a young woman in a wetsuit, and holds her prisoner under the ice of a frozen lake. Sounds chilling doesn't it? Get it?
Official Write-up:
The Dark Below is Douglas Schulze's (Dark Fields) new stunt, while waiting to shoot the sequel of his clever Mimesis, he crafts for us a Machiavellian and claustrophobic thriller in line with Buried. Shot in a natural setting in the heart of winter around (and mostly in) Michigan's Great Lake, with an economy of speech who leaves us with a constant tension, the film can re [Continued ...]...

Here's a new kind of chiller, for real. The Dark Below, which screened for the first time ever at Fantasia 2015, features a woman trapped in a frozen lake for nearly the whole length of the film. It was shot in sub-zero temperatures, and as someone who can't stand that kind of cold, I find it amazing that anyone would agree to work on the film in the first place. That also means that the entire premise is that much more horrific.Directed by Douglas Schulze, who co-wrote with Jonathan D'Ambrosio, The Dark Below takes its time unfolding the narrative in clever ways. Rachel (Lauren Mae Shafer in a relentlessly physical performance) is a woman who's been choked and drugged by Ben (David G.B. Brown), then...

While Douglas Schulze is working on a sequel to Mimesis, we’ve heard that he has an additional project in the works that will begin production later this month. Titled “The Dark Below,” this movie is billed as an “experimental thriller” with a storyline that is being kept a secret.
What we do know is that the movie takes place on Lake Michigan and a majority of it will occur underwater. Production starts at the end of February, although filming will span the entire year in phases due to weather requirements. The film is being shot on the Red Epic and will utilize special underwater camera rigging for photography.
The cast is still being assembled, but the first person to officially join is Lauren Shafer (Mimesis). Douglas Schulze will direct from a script he co-wrote with Jonathan D’Ambrosio. Ambrosio will produce along with former Sony pictures VP Kathryn McDermott (Spider-Man,...

People always point to violent video games and violent movies as a reason to why someone might commit a horrible crime in real life, but Mimesis plays on that claim and brings it to a scary new level of fandom. What if horror fans actually re-enacted their favorite horror movies, joining some cult-like club in which victims are unknowingly lured into a real-life role-playing event of deadly proportions? What if you woke up in a random location with zombies actually chasing you and eating the people around you just as in George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead? Well if you believe violent films are corrupting the most impressionable of minds, Mimesis is likely to become your worst nightmare.

As ShockYa reported in our interview with “Mimesis” director Douglas Schulze, “Mimesis” inolves taking horror to the next level by bringing in the fan’s involvement and love for the genre. In fact, Schulze said he got the idea for “Mimesis” from two convention-goers having to be detained by security for terrorizing other patrons. This intensity is directly expressed in the film, as it involves a group of fans acting the film out in real life, right down to killing kidnapped victims. “Mimesis” stars Allen Maldonado as Duane, a fast-talking, cock-sure type of guy who’s attending a horror convention with his best friend and horror fan Russell (Taylor Piedmonte). Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead was released to Blu-ray/DVD today and I wanted to share my recent interview with the movie’s director and co-writer, Douglas Schulze. We talked about his reasons for moving forward with this type of movie, the challenges of using George Romero’s classic to tell a new story, and I also learned about sequel plans:
Many people are taking Night of the Living Dead and just remaking it, while you used it as a starting point for a new movie. How did this idea originally come about?
Douglas Schulze: The story for Mimesis is very timely because of what’s happening in our world. People are so influenced by art and cinema that they go out and do the things you hear or read about. I’ve been asked if I have concern for the type of story I’m doing,...

Today Douglas Schulze's latest genre effort, Mimesis (review here), arrives on DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of Anchor Bay. Inspired by George A. Romero's classic Night of the Living Dead, it follows a group of horror fans stuck reliving the terrifying events of the 1968 film... but for real.
In anticipation of the flick's release, Dread Central recently chatted with Schulze about how a real-life incident inspired his unique twist on Romero's original story, his thoughts on walking the fine line of homage and remakes, sequel plans for Mimesis and much more.

*there are spoilers here. Director: Douglas Schulze. Writers: Douglas Schulze and Joshua Wagner. Cast: Allen Maldonado, Sid Haig, Lauren Mae Shafer, Courtney Gains, Taylor Piedmonte, David G.B. Brown, Jana Thompson, and Gavin Grazer. Douglas Schulze's (Hellmaster) latest horror feature is titled Mimesis. Mimesis simply means imitation. In this film, Mimesis is defined as life imitating art. Schulze manages to introduce a social message amongst all of the cannibalism, eye gougings and pitchfork murders. This message involves media and its portrayal of violence and its relation to real life violence. This message is certainly relevant now, but Mimesis is also an entertaining outing. The film is clever and the conflict is well written and well disguised. The film's story initially follows Duane (Allen Maldonado) and Russell (Taylor Piedmonte). These two are friends and they head off to a horror convention. Here, they meet the raccoon eyed Judith (Lauren Mae Shafer), who.
