Lives in the Kreuzberg district in Berlin.

, his character's name was changed from "Alex" in
Plus-minus null (1998)
into "Axel" in

Being also a trained opera singer, he was vocalist of the rock band "Lillies große Liebe" (lit. for Lillie's big love).
After studying philosophy and German studies, he attended acting and directing courses.
He also played in the tv series Tatort and Polizeiruf 110 and became a director of theatre.
Schmidt was married to an American woman, Jennifer Schmidt. Their son was born in 2008.
Schmidt was twice nominated for the Best Actor award at the Deutscher Filmpreis in 2003 and 2006.
He was a singer and guitarist in the rock band Lillies große Liebe in the 1980s.
