- His latest albums (on Telarc) have earned him proper recognition, with four of them winning Grammy Awards in comedy.
- For his performances he is known as Peter Schickele, Professor of Music Pathology at the University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople. He refers to himself as a musicolologist.
- His radio program, "Schickele Mix," has produced 168 episodes. In 1993 it won both the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award and the Gold Award for Programming Excellence from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. In early 2005, there were no plans to produce additional new episodes due a shortage of funding.
- Although he is generally associated with classical music, his varied works included recordings for children and folk music, including a long running professional relationship with Joan Baez.
- Among the operatic works he has "discovered" are "The Stoned Guest" (a half-act opera), "A Little Nightmare Music" (an opera in one irrevocable act), "Hansel and Gretel and Ted and Alice" (an opera in one unnatural act) and "The Abduction of Figaro" (a simply grand opera). "The Abduction of Figaro" was fully staged by The Minnesota Opera for its world premiere at The Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on April 27th, 1984.
- In addition to the concerts and recordings, he is the author of "The Definitive Biography of P.D.Q. Bach."
- Although much of his most famous work in classical music is devoted to comedy, his expertise, talent and skill have become widely recognized. He was asked to write a new forward to the recent printings of Nicolas Slonimsky's "The Lexicon of Musical Invective." He also wrote the foreword to Seymour Chwast's "Happy Birthday Bach: 300 Years of Johann Sebastian Bach.".
- 2005 marks the 40th anniversary of his first "discovery" of the music of P.D.Q. Bach. The year will be marked with performances of the concert now titled "P.D.Q. Bach: The Vegas Years" which includes the latest P.D.Q. Bach "discovery" "Gott sei dank, daß heute Freitag ist" ("Thank God It's Friday"). (February 2005)
