“Fitness advice, gig economy, binge watching Danish crime series, sustainability, sex when the kids watch cartoons, mobile bank ID, personal development 5:2 diet, anti-aging cream, Adobe updates, climate friendly travel, body activism,” Anders rants quietly to the camera, as he walks from his car to home in the equivalent of white picket fence Sweden at the beginning of Swedish Discovery Plus Original “Gotebia,” a half-hour dramedic psychological thriller.
“Exterior renovations, Roblox, mini Rodini hats, dinners from Fedora. Shared family calendar. Find us-time, life with kids, drainage pipes, hot yoga, performance review, changing the plumbing, pub crawls, doggy day care,” he goes on.
43, Anders is out of his depth at work where his company’s motivational speakers are no longer found in the newspaper or on TV but on YouTube, TikTok, Snap and Instagram. And suffering to keep up with the Joneses – in this case tennis player and neighbor Martin’s...

Joona Linna (Tobias Zilliacus) is a Swedish Cid officer investigating the murder of a gym teacher and his family. With no DNA or fingerprints, his only witness is the youngest child of the family, Josef (Jonatan Bökman), and he’s currently comatose and seriously wounded. Josef’s doctor, Daniella (Helena af Sandeberg), suggests using disgraced doctor/hypnotist Erik Bark (Mikael Persbrandt) to tap into Josef’s subconscious and find out what he saw. Reluctantly, Erik agrees, but soon finds his family the target as well, and the case becomes darker and more urgent.
The Hypnotist sounds like a good movie. It’s not. It’s a movie that has a half decent premise and squanders it on incredibly tedious scenes. There’s...

Let's clear this up now... This is not a remake of the chilling Japanese film Dark Water, nor is a retread of the horrid U.S. remake of the chilling Japanese film Dark Water. The Swedish people have an all new beast here. One that's pretty damned handy!
Below you'll find the first stills and trailer for Dark Water (Mörkt Vatten), directed by Rafael Edholm and starring Helena af Sandeberg, Sverrir Gudnason, and Andrzej Chyra. The flick opens in Sweden next Friday so expect a U.S. remake by September. That's usually how it goes, right?

Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough will star in Safe Haven, the latest Nicholas Sparks novel to be turned into a movie. Lasse Hallström, Oscar nominated for My Life As a Dog and The Cider House Rules, has been assigned to direct the romantic drama for Relativity Media. Safe Haven revolves around a young woman (Julianne Hough) who becomes the talk to the (small North Carolina) town after she becomes much too intimate with a widowed father (Josh Duhamel). Filming should commence in July. For the time being, the Safe Haven release date is a Valentine’s Day-friendly Feb. 8, 2013. Nicholas Sparks movie adaptations aren’t expensive to make, and they’re reliable box-office performers in North America — though considerably less so overseas. The current big screen adaptation of a Sparks novel is the Zac Efron / Taylor Schilling romantic melodrama The Lucky One, which has collected $58.49m in North America, in addition to $29.4m internationally,...

It's The Ape that put the filmmaker on our map but we won't be expecting further medicine-ball pounding from this Swede. Apparently moving closer to the tone of Farewell Falkenberg, Jesper Ganslandt is delving into family and female dynamics via situational humor. We look forward in reading these subtitles. Release Date/Status?: A 2012 Film Festival release premiere is assured. Tiff should have the North American preem. ...

Here's a piece of Scandi film news we're happy to come across. Jesper Ganslandt will commence filming on his third film sometime this spring. The Swedish filmmaker's aptly titled Blondie most probably refers to the airhead factor in a trio of the figures involved rather than the nation's dominant hair color or the late 70's singer/songwriter. Principle cast include four actresses of which the very cute Alexandra Dahlstrom (of Lukas Moodysson's Fucking Amal fame and most recently, a bit part in Romain Gavras' Our Day Will Come) might be the more internationally known. Part of Sweden's current new wave of auteurs (Ruben Östlund, Tomas Alfredson and Henrik Hellström & Fredrik Wenzel) post-Moodysson, Ganslandt really took centre stage with sophomore film which played out on the major film festival circuit (which is where we found the film). Jesper Kurlandsk who previously produced Ganslandt's last film will produce again. Gist: Blondie is about a family,...
