Her mother was Church of England and converted to Judaism when she married her Jewish husband (Vanessa's father). Because Jewishness is deemed to pass down the mother's line, and her mother was not born a Jew, Vanessa described herself, in her autobiography "Inside Out (A Life in Stages)", as "an insufficiently Jewish Jew".
