[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Ripley” below.]
The turning point for “Ripley,” Steven Zaillian’s limited Netflix series re-imagining of Patricia Highsmith’s crime novel, “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” occurs in Episode 3 (“Sommerso”), when grifter Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) murders Dickie (Johnny Flynn) in a boat in Sanremo. But the grifter discovers that murder is a filthy business in a bravura 20-minute sequence, in which he has difficulty disposing of Dickie’s body, and we observe every arduous moment in close to real-time.
This protracted view of Tom’s twisted mind in action is made even more menacing in black-and-white (shot by “There Will Be Blood” Oscar winner Robert Elswit). After learning that his grift has come to a sudden end, Tom grabs the oar and beats Dickie to death. But then everything goes wrong.

Control-Alt-Delete your weekend plans. The brilliant science fiction comedy, Upload, which takes place in a dystopian version of our world where no one ever truly needs to die (for the right price), logs back on after a year and a half offline. When we last saw him, Nathan (Robbie Amell) — the murdered tech bro whose consciousness was uploaded into the costly virtual Lakeview afterlife resort in the series opener — had downloaded into a cloned body of himself. This allowed Nathan to finally get physical with his Lakeview case worker/love interest, Nora (Andy Allo). (Credit: Prime Video) Unfortunately, it also put him in massive danger, since the still-faulty downloading process tends to cause subjects’ heads to explode after a short while. With the clock ticking, “that’s definitely a concern,” director and supervising producer David Rogers says, adding that Season 2’s finale did close on Nathan — shortly after sleeping with Nora — experiencing a nosebleed.

The Tuesday night comedy round-up takes a turn for the better this week as each show delivers in its own way. It’s not perfect as of yet, but every episode does something right this week. Although the newer comedies continue to be the funniest, both New Girl and The Mindy Project step up this week with surprisingly entertaining episodes.

As "The Office" readies to close for good on May 16, Zap2it talked with showrunner Greg Daniels -- the man who adapted Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's BBC comedy for American audiences -- about everything under the Dunder Mifflin sun.
Part 1 of our nearly hour-long chat focused on the show's beginnings and the baby steps the show took with Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam's (Jenna Fischer) relationship. Pb&J took a big step forward in the Season 2 finale, "Casino Night," but at the start of Season 3, Jim is working at another branch, purposely going against every sitcom expectation. We pick up the conversation with Jim in Stamford.
Zap2it: Was the plan always to incorporate characters from Stamford back into the Scranton branch?

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...

We were curious about what springs to mind when the New York City-based, Appalachian-tinged folk-punk rockers of O'Death think of Chicago. When we posed this query to the band, drummer David Rogers-Berry (who likes to beat his skins with chain links and other unusual noisemaking apparatuses) immediately took the baton and jotted down his five favorite R. Kelly-affiliated songs. Apparently, there's no irony here: He and the band claim mad, earnest love for the Chicago-based R&B superstar.
