When I first walked out of The Many Saints of Newark, my initial reaction was to call it a B-movie. What I didn’t say at the time, however, was how much I love B-movies. While I saw the flaws in the film and couldn’t wholly endorse it to cinemagoers spoiled by the perfection of The Godfather, Goodfellas, and New Jack City, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to people like me. Those who appreciate the low-budget gangster movies sometimes because of their warts. A majority of fans of The Sopranos will have the same reaction: Meh, The Many Saints of Newark could have been better. So when’s it playing next? I plan to see it again, more than once, on the big screen.

In Los Angeles Times film critic Justin Chang’s appreciative and insightful review of Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round,” Chang notes “ ‘Another Round,’ while very much about addiction, isn’t really an addiction drama. It’s a male midlife-crisis comedy in which drinking to excess is less a cause than a symptom of Martin’s funk — and sometimes, yes, a viable solution to it.”
Chang, aware of the film’s provocative examination of intoxication, quotes director Vinterberg, who calls the film’s Pov a “scandalous approach to a serious topic,” and Chang notes that “Round” “not only acknowledges, but also celebrates the life-giving buzz his characters experience with every swig of absinthe or Smirnoff.”
This unorthodox and non-judgmental view of the possible joys of dipsomania doesn’t just run counter to the cultural moment we’re in, but it’s also in stark contrast to the mainstream cinema’s traditionally...

Mother of mercy, did the movies mark the beginning of Rico? The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act was named after the character Rico Bandello in what is largely considered to be the first gangster movie, Little Caesar. While Edward G. Robinson’s Rico wasn’t specifically Al Capone in that film, the real-life gangster’s signature cigar fumes are all over it. Josh Trank replaced the Cuban Corona with a carrot in the recent Vertical Entertainment film Capone, which stars Tom Hardy as the title character in his twilight years, suffering from a premature burial. The aging mobster’s memories were buried by the syphilis microbe, and along with it went the clues to his buried treasure.
That speculative biopic also depicts Capone as a film aficionado. He sings along with Bert Lahr’s incomparable “If I Were King of the Forest,” from The Wizard of Oz, and educates...

Key Largo
Written by Richard Brooks and John Huston
Directed by John Huston
U.S.A., 1948
Travelling by bus through the muggy Florida Keys, Maj. Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart) finally arrives at his desired destination: a modest hotel run by the father and widow of a friend he lost during the recent war effort. James Temple (Lionel Barrymore) and Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall) greet him with open arms, eager to learn more of what happened to their loved one during combat in Italy. Much to Frank’s concern however, several of the establishment’s current occupants have a dirty look about them. Their claims to wanting to make friends are off kilter and plainly disingenuous. As a terrifying tropical storm begins cooking outside, inside the hotel the leader of the scruffy looking band reveals himself to be none other the infamous hoodlum tycoon Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson), recently exiled...

Harry Lewis, a nasty accomplice of Edward G. Robinson in the Humphrey Bogart classic Key Largo who went on to launch the showbiz-hotspot restaurants Hamburger Hamlet and Kate Mantilini, has died. He was 93. Lewis died Sunday of natural causes in a convalescent home in Beverly Hills, publicist Greg Rogers announced. We have been hearing about Chloe Mafia’s X Factor audition for months now and we will finally be allowed to see the alleged call girl in action, on tonight’s show.
Chloe, 20, from Wakefield is a mum of one and has admitted that if she makes it onto the X Factor final shows, it will not be her TV debut. The Wakefield singer appeared on BBC Three’s Snog Marry Avoid last year for a badly needed make under.
The Sun recently revealed that the Burberry clad brunette, has been charging £160 an hour for sex and is often going by the name of Candy.
She turned up to audition for Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger in Manchester earlier this year and told the crew:
“I’m here at X Factor because everywhere I go I don’t fit in properly anyway but I know the place I...

London singer Johnny Lloyd made his second X Factor attempt this week, four years after he and his band Avenue were thrown off the show.
The boys made it through the bootcamp stage in 2006, but were cut from the lineup after Simon Cowell discovered that they already had a management deal and had been specially put together for the show. At the time Cowell said:
‘They misled us. It wouldn`t have been fair to allow them to deprive another act of a slot in the finals.’
Johnny returned yesterday with his new band Princes and Rogues and his former mentor Louis Walsh recognised him immediately. He told the judges that he had advertised for band members on Facebook before they gave a rendition of ‘Forever is Over’ by the Saturdays.
A source told The Sun: “Johnny was elated to go through, although the band know they need a lot of work.

According to the Widnes Weekly News, Rocco will perform in public for the final time on Sunday when he celebrates his 70th birthday. X Factor judge Louis Walsh fears that he is finally facing the consequences of Johnny Rocco's curse, a report claims. Retired gardener Rocco, 69, issued a warning to Walsh at auditions in Manchester two years ago after being mocked by the Irish judge. As well as mumbling in Italian to the boyband manager, he said: "Remember the name Johnny Rocco." According to the Daily Star, Walsh now blames Rocco after being hit by a run of bad luck as he filmed his judges' houses stage in Italy recently. It is thought that the star lost his luggage and found himself caught in thunder and lightning on arrival in Milan. Additionally, his contestants were reportedly left (more)...
