Season 11 has ended, but Doctor Who is the story that never ends. What did Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Class leave unanswered?
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
This feature contains spoilers for every series of Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Class.
It's a big universe out there and it's only got bigger since Doctor Who returned. Returning to screens in the multi-channel age, it's not surprising that the new series' success has led to spin-offs. In the last 13 years, the program has evolved into one of the BBC's biggest global properties, creating more chances to explore the Whoniverse for its writers and producers.
Beyond the Tardis-faring adventures of Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and now Jodie Whittaker, we've had three major spin-off series “from the world of Doctor Who” since 2005. All were made for vastly different audiences to each other,...

Take a glimpse inside Princess Margaret‘s indulgent morning routine!
According to an excerpt from Ma’am Darling by Craig Brown, which was posted on Twitter by writer Gareth Roberts, the then 25-year-old royal would start her day with breakfast in bed, followed by two hours in bed listening to the radio, reading the newspapers (“which she invariably left scattered over the floor”) … and chain-smoking.
Margaret, who was quite the social butterfly as evidenced in Netflix’s The Crown, would then take a leisurely hour-long bath run for her by her lady’s maid.

A Doctor Who episode from legendary author Douglas Adams will be finished via animation, featuring the voices of the original actors...
When Douglas Adams unexpectedly died in 2001, he left a monumental void in the world of science fiction. Through works like The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency he established himself as a literary idol for an entire generation who would grow up to see many of his seemingly far-out ideas come to fruition. That phone you might be reading this article on is basically a real-life Hitchhiker's Guide, and a small reminder that as bad as things are right now, they aren't entirely terrible.

As you are probably well aware, a pre-fame Adams was a script editor for Doctor Who during Tom Baker's tenure on that series. Along with giving the show some,...

If Doctor Who were to take on the challenge of broadcasting a future episode live, what might be involved?
It’s all change in the world of Doctor Who at the moment. The 13th Doctor has been revealed to be Jodie Whittaker (off Broadchurch) and Kris Marshall has gone from being the rumoured new Doctor to being the rumoured new companion. So we’re taking a look at a bold step that the production team could take, if they decided to: putting on Doctor Who’s first live television episode. Doctor Who warps back on to our screens in two short days, with the premiere of a new 12-part series of sci-fi, sonic screwdrivers and Capaldi attack eyebrows.
But while the BBC has broadcast more than 800 episodes of generation-defining time travels, there's been as many cracking scripts that never made it to our TVs – from key character deaths to Jk Rowling cameos.
1. Jk Rowling vs. wizards
Russell T Davies' first idea for the 2008 Christmas special was to have the Doctor meet Jk Rowling - playing herself - with the pair battling wizards and witches.
David Tennant wasn't fond of the idea - he felt it sounded like a spoof - so Davies quashed the story to placate his leading man. In its place, we got 'The Next Doctor', which was pretty magical in its own right - so no damage, no foul.
2. Stephen Fry's 1920s adventure

Big Finish is finally entering current Doctor Who continuity with the Unit Extinction adventures, but what does that mean?
During Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary celebrations, everybody had their own favourite moments. Maybe yours was seeing Matt Smith and David Tennant sparring with each other. Maybe it was the “all thirteen!” moment on Gallifrey, seeing Tom Baker turn up at the end to say “Hi! I’m Tom Baker! How cool is that?”, or watching Peter Davison and Colin Baker try and break into the BBC. There was no shortage of punch-the-air moments for fans. But as someone who spent nearly every moment of the anniversary bouncing up and down and literally clapping my hands with glee, the highpoint came towards the end of Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor short, The Night of the Doctor. Just before he regenerates, he utters the words “Charlie, C'rizz, Lucy, Tamsin, Molly, friends, companions I've known,...

Despite being a television creation, our favourite time lord has had a long association with the printed page. More than one fan over the years has revealed that they discovered Doctor Who through reading the popular Target novelisations of the television series, rather the onscreen original. When the series went into its long sixteen year hiatus in the nineties however, the Doctor Who novel really came of age, at first under the aegis of Virgin Publishing, and later under BBC Books’ own imprint. Although the novels carried over many of the same authors between companies.
By the time the programme came back in 2005, the Doctor had enjoyed well over 200 adventures across his many incarnations, and several writers would eventually create stories for the new series, including Gareth Roberts and Paul Cornell. Viewers of a certain age may remember a quirky kids TV show called Grandad in which Clive Dunn played Charlie Quick, an absent-minded old caretaker who would almost certainly end each episode by drowning his spluttering boss in a tidal wave of fizzy drinks spurting from a malfunctioning dispenser unit.
Good times. And refreshingly free of the moronic TV programming that viewers have to endure these days. This ratings-driven disease has conveniently eaten its way into good old Doctor Who, which has been pushed back to 8.30 in order to make way for two tacky hours worth of Z-list celebs moving around a big floor. Considering that Doctor Who is supposed to be a family programme, pushing it back to make way for the lowest-common-denominator trash of Strictly Come Dancing makes about as much sense as a man trying to give directions with 100 gobstoppers in his mouth. That's the whole junior audience left out for starters.

BBC
Almost every Doctor Who writer has a certain thumbprint that they tend to leave on the stories they write. Steven Moffat has mind-melting time paradoxes, Classic Who scribe Robert Holmes had unsubtle political commentary, and Gareth Roberts has the Doctor trying to blend in with modern day humans; with The Caretaker being his third episode in a row to use this plot device.
But that’s not necessarily a bad thing since he tends to do it very well. Despite the mass of similarities to The Lodger (2010) and Closing Time (2011), The Caretaker manages to carve its own little niche as a relaxed comedic episode thanks largely to the completely different character dynamics at play this time around.

The real thing that the episode has going for it is the humour. It’s not the out there gag-a-minute humour of Robot Of Sherwood but it’s still a very...

You think it’s hard to balance a life as a mother and a businesswoman, or that of a governor and a single dad, how about alternating trying to cultivate a new relationship while you’re off saving the universe? The Caretaker
By Gareth Roberts and Steven Moffat
Directed by Paul Murphy
After an exhausting montage of travels across the universe that need to end in tome for making dates with Danny Pink, The Doctor is pleased to let Clara know that she’ll be getting some time to herself. He’s got a job he needs to handle on his own, and is somewhat vague when pressed for details. She happily reports to Danny that while she has been distracted of late, she’ll be more centered on him for a bit.

Doctor Who has always been a writer’s show. The opening credit emphasizing the author of each episode is our constant reminder, but we still might take that for granted. There are a lot of names who’ve written adventures for the Doctor and his companions, and they’re not most of them household names, nor are all of them consistent in their quality or genre. The two most recent episodes, however, need to have their authors acknowledged for different reasons. Last week, it had to be said that Steve Thompson is always boring. This week, with “The Caretaker,” Gareth Roberts has to be recognized as being a wonderfully clever yet down-to-earth voice who has been greatly missed for the past few years. Maybe it’s because he’s been writing Doctor Who stories, originally in novel form, since the early 1990s, but he just seems to get it. There is a lot going on in “The...

This week, on Doctor Who: Danny isn’t an idiot, the Doctor can’t be bothered, and Clara is far too calm
Remember when the Doctor was nice? Let’s lower the bar: remember when he wasn’t an asshole? “The Caretaker” should be a lighthearted episode, a character-heavy look at what happens when Clara’s two worlds come crashing together. Instead, the episode’s lighter moments are weighed down by the Twelfth Doctor resuming old habits and treating Clara just as disrespectfully as the Eleventh Doctor. After weeks of promising developments (Clara’s front and center in “Deep Breath”, “Robot of Sherwood”, and “Listen”), after thoughtful, honest conversations between the Doctor and Clara and episodes that took their time, with “The Caretaker”, writers Gareth Roberts...

Well wasn’t that an enjoyable new episode of Doctor Who? The Skovox Blitzer was certainly impressive, but we think you’ll agree that the Doctor probably shouldn’t take up cleaning responsibilities in any schools in future – at least, not in his current incarnation. Peter Capaldi is on top comedy form again, as he goes undercover as The Caretaker. Here's our spoiler-filled review...
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
8.6 The Caretaker
"There has been a spillage"
For five weeks, the new series of Doctor Who has flung Clara and the Doctor from Earth, to inside a Dalek, to Sherwood Forest, to a room with a strange blanket in it, through to last week's planetary bank heist. It's been a real mix of stories and adventures, all the time gradually threaded with the growing romance between Clara and Danny Pink, and the mysteries of Missy.
The Caretaker, another really good episode of the show (arguably one of the best of an impressive run), puts the brakes on just a little. And thus, while it returns to those two underlying threads, it also stops long enough so that people can actually have a chat.

With series 8 referencing 'heaven', Nathan traces Doctor Who's varied relationships with atheism and faith...
I was a massive Simpsons fan as a child. And when I say ‘massive’, I really do mean - huge. It’s still one of the more memorable moments prior to my wedding day: emptying out my childhood bedroom with my (now) wife, only for her to discover notebooks filled with minute observations about the show. Obscure number plates, birthdays of secondary characters, dates of key events and much more besides. Having already paid for the reception venue she couldn’t exactly retract her commitment to marry me, although my mind contemplated that possibility when she hyperventilated laughing at ‘little Nathan’, circa 1999.
My point is this: I wasn’t just a fan, I was an über-fan.
You might be asking, “what’s this got to do with Doctor Who?” - trust me, I’m getting there.

Doctor Who series 8 remains on good form with the latest instalment. Here's our spoiler-free look at The Caretaker...
Remember when Doctor Who returned back in 2005, and we had Boom Town? Where, after weeks of running around and explosions, the bulk of the episode was characters having a conversation, with a bit of plot going on around them? It's an episode we've always been fond of, as rarely does Who have space to invest a good chunk of an episode in fleshing characters and themes out in such a way.
But The Caretaker, after a fairly breathless opening five episodes, finds that time. As such, it does a lot of very good character work that deals with things which have been building up for weeks. On top of that, it draws the best performance of the series to date from both Jenna Coleman (who shows terrific range) and Samuel Anderson. And...

Peter Capaldi's Doctor has a bank heist to tackle in Time Heist. Here's our spoiler-filled review...
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
8.5 Time Heist
"Basically, it's the eyebrows"
For the first time in the current run of Doctor Who, Time Heist gives us an adventure where the Doctor is the lead character in it. The focus, to date, has seen Clara doing Doctor-y duties, frequently being the grown up who rolls her sleeves up and gets things sorted out. This time, though, Peter Capaldi gets a go. Turns out he's really quite good at it.
It's coupled with a slight re-hardening of his take on the Doctor too. There have been little thawings around the edge of his portrayal here and there over the past couple of weeks, as he continues to work out and get used to his new identity. Here, the character's a bit tougher,...
