Look into the series Criterion Channel have programmed for August and this lineup is revealed as (in scientific terms) quite something. “Hollywood Chinese” proves an especially deep bench, spanning “cinema’s first hundred years to explore the ways in which the Chinese people have been imagined in American feature films” and bringing with it the likes of Cronenberg’s M. Butterfly, Cimino’s Year of the Dragon, Griffith’s Broken Blossoms, and Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet—among 20-or-so others. A three-film Marguerite Duras series brings one of the greatest films ever (India Song) and two lesser-screened experiments; films featuring Yaphet Kotto include Blue Collar, Across 110th Street, and Midnight Run; and lest we ignore a Myrna Loy retro that goes no later than 1949.
Criterion editions include The Asphalt Jungle, Husbands, Rouge, and Sweet Smell of Success; streaming premieres for Loznitsa’s Donbass, Béla Tarr’s watershed Damnation, and...

Everyone who was invited to the house knows Walter well, they know him a little, anyway. Some met him in childhood; some met him months ago. And Walter s always been a little off. But after the hardest year of their lives, nobody was going to turn down Walter s invitation to an astonishingly beautiful house in the woods, overlooking an enormous sylvan lake. It s beautiful, it s opulent, it s private so a week of putting up with Walter s weird little schemes and nicknames in exchange for the vacation of a lifetime? Why not? All of them were at that moment in their lives when they could feel themselves pulling away from their other friends; wouldn t a chance to reconnect be nice? In The Nice House on the Lake,...

From Walkabout, Storm Boy, Crocodile Dundee and Rabbit Proof Fence, to Australia, The Proposition and Charlie’s Country, the work of David Gulpilil forms a throughline in modern Australian cinema.
Knowing that his career has touched Australians far and wide and across generations, distributor Abcg Films wanted to ensure documentary My Name Is Gulpilil was accessible and could reach audiences across the country.
Directed by Molly Reynolds, the film sees the legendary Indigenous actor, who has terminal lung cancer, tell his story in his own words – there are no talking heads from anyone else.
The film was originally intended to exist as a posthumous tribute, though Gulpilil has defied the odds. Indeed, despite his illness, he was even able to be there in person for the film’s premiere at the Adelaide Festival in March.

Horrors The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and A Quiet Place Part II might have led the box office last weekend, but the national tally was far from scary – even despite the Melbourne lockdown.
Warner Bros’ Conjuring 3 was no. 1, bowing on $2.9 million from 321 screens. That marks the third highest opening for a film in the supernatural universe, which consists of eight films.
Based on the 1981 murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, the film sees Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as husband-and-wife paranormal investigators. Aussie James Wan produces with Peter Safran, with Michael Chaves directing from a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who conceived the story with Wan.
The film’s result, which works out a whopping $8,998 per screen, is significant given cinemas in Melbourne were closed for the second weekend running.

So, what does this hard working comic book reviewer choose to review on one of the hottest and sunniest days of the year so far? A horror book. Yep, not the most natural choice I know, but two things pushed this to the top of the review pile. One, that gorgeous cover, almost a modern take on those old classic EC and DC mystery book covers. Those covers always drew you in, tempting you with the promise of a story that usually didn’t live up to the billing but certainly made you spend your money before you realised. The second reason was the writer, James Tynion himself. Tynion has a certain sensibility that carries across all of his work, be it superhero or non. Often offbeat, creepy at times, unique, never boring, and always leaves...

Two new major releases in A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella helped to breathe life back into the box office last weekend, though results were stymied by the closure of cinemas across Victoria.
Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II was one of the first films to be delayed by the pandemic. Some 14 months later than planned, the John Krasinski-helmed sequel premiered ahead of the 2018 original, topping the box office with $3.1 million from 542 screens. With previews from the previous weekend, it sits on highly respectable $5.2 million.
In the US, where it is Memorial Day weekend, the horror, starring Emily Blunt, Krasinski, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe is expected to post $58 million by Monday.
Despite a simultaneous PVOD release on Disney+, Cruella, starring Emma Stone in the titular role, still drew a respectable crowd for the Mouse House, bowing at no. 2 from $1.5 million from 452, or $1.6 million with previews.

‘Little Monsters’.
The Melbourne International Film Festival (Miff) has unveiled the first 29 films on its line-up this year, including the world premiere of Good Thing Productions and Passion Pictures’ The Australian Dream which will open the festival August 1.
The documentary, written by Stan Grant and directed by Brit Daniel Gordon, looks at race, identity and belonging from the perspective of former Sydney Swans captain and Indigenous rights activist Adam Goodes, who in 2013 sparked a national conversation about racism after requesting a 13-year-old Collingwood supporter be removed from the ground after calling him an “ape”.
“The Australian Dream is a compelling kickstart both to our festival this year, and to a national conversation,” said Miff artistic director Al Cossar.
‘The Australian Dream’.

David Gulpilil returns home with filmmaker Molly Reynolds to explore “what happened to my culture when it was interrupted by your culture”
David Gulpilil – magnetic Indigenous actor connecting two Australias
Film-maker Rolf De Heer’s achingly beautiful 2014 character study Charlie’s Country, co-written by and starring David Gulpilil, could have been called Another Country – the title of director Molly Reynolds’ new documentary exploring Gulpilil’s home community of Ramininging, Northern Territory.
Both films focus on settings that to the vast majority of viewers will feel exotic but familiar, close but far away: a country very different from the Australia viewers with choc-tops in their hands and apps on their smartphones are likely to be familiar with.

I first watched Eduardo Sanchez’s Lovely Molly on VOD when it first came out several months ago. At that time I had heard very a little about the movie save that I had also been invited to a screening in New York City that I had to turn down due to a scheduling conflict. I was fairly disappointed to miss the screening. This is a movie from the same director who gave us The Blair Witch Project. Now I will tell you that that film, no matter how copied or mocked today was one of the most terrifying theatrical experiences of my theater going life. That’s mostly due to the clever ruse that painted it as a true found footage movie and not simply a movie shot in the found footage style. How could I miss the theatrical release of another movie by a filmmaker who had such amazing power over my emotions.

Lovely Molly will be released to Blu-ray/DVD tomorrow and we’ve been given an exclusive clip to share with our readers. This particular clip shows a segment from the film where Molly is investigating noises in her house. It includes commentary from director Eduardo Sánchez and co-writer Jamie Nash, who talk about how working inside of a claustrophobic house helped get everyone into the right mood.
“When newlywed Molly Reynolds returns to her long-abandoned family home, remainders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. A malevolent force, whether her own huanted past or some supernatural ‘thing,’ tirelessly seeks to overwhelm her. Alone and isolated in a centuries-old house, she soon begins an inexorable descent into depravity. Somewhere in the house, in that terrible space between psychosis and possession, lies an evil that will pull Molly and all those around her into darkness and death.”

"For me there's absolutely no better, no happier time than developing a musical. I absolutely love it," says actor-writer Molly Reynolds. Reynolds has been acting in musical theater since she was a child, but recently she's changed her focus to writing. As playwright and lyricist, Reynolds has been developing a new musical, "Benny the Baboon," for the past two years with creative partners Pumashock (Natalie White) and David St. Louis. Reynolds says that "Benny the Baboon" started out as a children's musical audio book. But when she began researching to make it more educational, she discovered that the real baboons in Cape Town, South Africa, are known for hijacking tourists' cars. So she and her collaborators based the musical on true events. "The baboons in Cape Town don't sing and dance, but everything that happens to the baboons in this musical is real," Reynolds says. Essentially, the show tells the.

Eduardo Sanchez helped to refresh the horror genre and kickstart the current wave of 'found footage' releases when he co-wrote and co-directed 1999's The Blair Witch Project.
He continued in that vein with Altered and Seventh Moon and is now filming his newest venture Exists, in which a group of friends are stalked by Bigfoot.
Meanwhile, his most recent completed project is about to scare its way into UK cinemas.
Lovely Molly is directed by Sanchez and co-penned with Jamie Nash. It arrives on screens on June 29, following several festival appearances.
The official synopsis is included here along with the trailer, the poster (above) and a selection of stills.

Welcome to Hype, a new weekly column where I give my two cents worth on movie marketing hype. The studios sure know how to whet the appetites of us movie buffs, from viral video campaigns, tantalising teasers and revealing one-sheets, more and more we are being fooled into believing that the next big movie release is the most exciting thing ever to grace the big screen. Often our hopes are elevated just to be dashed when we realise, actually, it wasnt all that- but every now and again our minds are well and truly blown and our faith in cinema is restored.
With a marketing campaign so huge that even the trailer had its own trailer, Prometheus sucked in fans of every genre as well as the die-hard Alienites and had the online world chasing its own tail with avid speculation, scrutinising the the imagery for clues about the story...

[With Lovely Molly due for limited theatrical release tomorrow, we revisit our review from the 2011 Toronto film festival.] Molly Reynolds is, in many ways, the typical American girl. A small town girl in middle America with little education, she married young and lives a blue collar life with her truck driver husband Tim. There doesn't appear to be anything remarkable about Molly at first glance, but if you dig just a little bit beneath the surface you'll find an abyss, a dark hidden world that threatens to consume her. A former junkie struggling to stay clean, Molly turned to the drugs in the first place to soothe the memories of an abusive childhood. But with Tim on the road as often as not and...

Image Entertainment has released a new clip from Lovely Molly, the new movie from The Blair Witch Project co-creator Eduardo Sanchez. The film will receive a limited theatrical release on May 18th.
Lovely Molly stars Gretchen Lodge, Alexandra Holden, Johnny Lewis, Ken Arnold, Daniel Ross, Katie Foster, and Lauren Lakis. Here are links to our recent coverage:

Lovely Molly is a little over a week out from its release from Image Entertainment and we have one more clip to share with you - this one I consider one of the more effective scenes in Eduardo Sanchez's flick (it gets all The Entity on you).
Here, Molly - played by Gretchen Lodge - is confronted by her boss about her unusual, sordid behavior. Hop inside for a look at the clip which is considered Nsfw.
Lovely Molly opens on May 18th. When newlywed Molly Reynolds returns to her long-abandoned family home, frightful reminders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. She soon begins an inexorable descent into evil that blurs the lines between psychosis and possession.
