- On October 14, 1942 He and three other men escaped Colditz through the kitchens, out through the German area of the camp into the dry moat of the castle. The four split into two groups and all made it to Switzerland.

- The route they followed into Switzerland was a route that other escapee's had used before. The German commander of the area was so confident the war was going to end soon he allowed escapee's to cross into Switzerland.
