In a stark debut from Leo Leigh, Maggie O’Neill meets a mysterious biker and discovers his son is a narcissistic YouTuber and wannabe dancer
This bleak, stark debut feature from writer-director Leo Leigh bears the obvious influences of his parents Mike Leigh and Alison Steadman; it has a barbed cartoony unhappiness, a depiction of its characters verging on caricature and misanthropy but not quite, and the notes of redemption offered at the end are ambiguous. It is not a theatre of cruelty so much as a theatre of mockery; a world where a lot of the time absurd people are laughing at the absurdity of others, partly – but not wholly – because of how unhappy they are.
Leigh allows us to see how the tonal sourness challenges the adjective in the title. Maggie O’Neill plays Sue, a woman who runs a (depressing) children’s party shop hiring out balloons and banners,...

It's only a rumour, but how could Harry Potter And The Cursed Child translate to the screen? A few thoughts...
Despite the various wrinkles in their DC movie slate thus far, the studio bods at Warner Bros. Pictures must be sitting pretty on the upcoming revival of their Harry Potter franchise. November sees the release of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, from a new screenplay by Jk Rowling that is intended to launch a trilogy. No matter what happens with that plan, the studio can always fall back on a Force Awakens-sized event 'legacy-quel' in the next decade or so.
Harry Potter And The Cursed Child is a play in two parts, co-written by Rowling, Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany. The production opened in London this July and is already more or less sold out until the end of 2017. The story focuses on the...

Silas Blissett made a shock return to 'Hollyoaks' last night (19.01.16). The sinister serial killer - who is played by Jeff Rawle - stunned fans of the soap when he emerged as a mystery visitor to incarcerated Trevor Royle. The E4 first look episode showed an unknown person preparing to visit Trevor - who is currently on remand under suspicion as the gloved hand killer - before he took a seat opposite the club boss and his distinctive voice was heard. You, Me & Them, Series 1
Written and created by Steve Turner
Available streaming on Acorn.TV
A sitcom has two primary jobs in terms of becoming a success: to build a world viewers will want to continue spending time in, and to make them laugh. The former is perhaps the more daunting task, but both are nebulous, hard to measure, and difficult to figure out in advance. British television is often vaunted as superior to its American counterpart, but if American TV has one advantage, it is that the increased episode orders on network television give American sitcoms time to find themselves in their first season. You, Me & Them, the new sitcom from writer/creator Steve Turner, does a decent job at building out a world and cast of characters worth spending time with, but in its six-episode first season, it all too often forgets to be funny.

The BBC has released a new video from the filming of An Adventure in Space and Time.
The Doctor Who biopic - commissioned to celebrate 50 years of the BBC sci-fi drama - will explore the show's 1960s origins.

Reece Shearsmith is to play Patrick Troughton in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary biopic.
An Adventure in Space and Time - which will tell the story of the BBC sci-fi drama's early days - has been written by Shearsmith's League of Gentlemen co-star Mark Gatiss.
"I first asked Reece [to play this role] about 12 years ago when I started thinking about this project," Gatiss told the Radio Times. "We were in the midst of League of Gentlemen and I just remember thinking, if anyone plays Patrick Troughton, it should be Reece.
"Like the second Doctor, he's small, saturnine and a comic genius. The complete package. He thought it was a fantastic idea and I've kind of nurtured it all this time."
Troughton played the second Doctor between 1966 and 1969, inheriting the show's lead role from original star William Hartnell, who will be played by Harry Potter's David Bradley in the biopic.

Langford’S Picks And Pans
The L.A. Complex
Wow. I didn’t see that coming. Frankly though I have to admit I don’t quite buy Kal trying to kill himself. The character just didn’t seem like the type to take things in that direction. Still, it’s pretty compelling drama and Benjamin Charles Watson and Andra Fuller not only have terrific chemistry, but are very talented actors.
Their scenes together are very intense and I thought the moment where Tariq told Kal that he’d never be able to get involved with another man without thinking about the abuse he suffered to be quite powerful. This continues to be a really well done storyline and quite unique in that it features black gay men, which is sadly still a rarity on the gay television canon. I’m very glad this show is back and they’re continuing this compelling story,...

Upcoming episodes will see Will Savage under suspicion of committing the crime after sinister Silas implicates him. Although Will protests his innocence, he quickly becomes an outcast in the village thanks to a hate campaign led by Texas and Ally. Ash Kane is keen to help Will, so she desperately tries to gain access to Silas at the hospital in a bid to clear her fellow student's name. However, when Ash causes a distraction at the facility to get to Silas, her efforts backfire badly as she gives the evil grandfather the opportunity to escape. Now (more)...

Hollyoaks star Jeff Rawle has revealed his reasons for returning to the soap, explaining that he felt his evil character's story was not over. The actor recently reprised his role as Silas Blissett, who bowed out from the show last November when he was finally exposed as the village's serial killer. Rawle told All About Soap: "There was still more to explore, but I became unavailable due to other work commitments. There were always unanswered questions, so it seemed like a good idea to return for this storyline. I hope the fans will be pleased to see him back." Asked whether this will be Silas's final appearance, he replied: "Probably, but who knows? There's a big question mark hanging over what happens to him. The writers might want to investigate that. I'd be happy to pop back for [another] return as Silas in the future, (more)...

Hollyoaks serial killer Silas Blissett will escape from hospital later this month. The evil grandfather, played by Jeff Rawle, is back on screen this week as Texas Longford starts visiting him to seek answers over Lynsey's murder. As seen in our recent picture preview, Texas (Bianca Hendrickse-Spendlove) will provoke Silas's rage as they clash during one particular visit. However, it seems that Silas's return plot will get even more sinister as he later manages to do a disappearing act from the psychiatric hospital. Now on the loose again, Silas heads to Texas's flat for a terrifying showdown (more)...

Hollyoaks cast members have today (June 29) paid tribute to their former co-star Karen Hassan following her shock departure from the soap. The latest episode of the Channel 4 show saw Hassan's popular character Lynsey Nolan found dead in a top-secret storyline twist. A number of Hassan's closest Hollyoaks friends today spoke exclusively to Digital Spy about her exit, tipping the actress for a bright future. Jeff Rawle, who plays Lynsey's evil nemesis Silas Blissett, commented: "I would just like to say how brilliant it has been working with Karen. She became an exceptional adversary to Silas and it made all the scenes we had together very strong. "She's a beautiful person and a brilliant actor. I know everyone on Hollyoaks is really sad to see her go. I hope we get to work on something together again soon." Bronagh (more)...

Hollyoaks aired its most shocking storyline twist of the year so far tonight (June 28) as Lynsey Nolan was found dead in E4's first look episode. Fan favourite Brendan Brady (Emmett Scanlan) made the heartbreaking discovery in a dramatic cliffhanger for the soap, shortly after his war with enemy Sampson had begun to hot up. Karen Hassan, who played Lynsey, filmed her Hollyoaks exit scenes a few weeks ago, but show bosses kept her departure under wraps so fans would be surprised by the storyline twist. Lynsey's death will now spark a huge whodunit storyline as a number of suspects had a motive for wanting to get rid of her. The Irish nurse was always the biggest enemy of serial killer Silas Blissett (Jeff Rawle), and with the cunning villain returning to screens in upcoming episodes, fans may wonder whether he had something to do with her (more)...

Good Times, Bad Times
It’s been a while since I watched this show. Readers know I’ve had a long love-hate relationship with this glossy Dutch soap as the writing has always been hit or miss for me. And since the show killed off Lucas’ boyfriend Edwin a few months ago, I’ve really not cared for Lucas’ various adventures since, yet I still think killing off Edwin was the right idea. I liked the character, but he and Lucas and their pairing had gone as far as things could and it was time to move on. Anyway, I caught last week’s episodes and as usual, the writing is still hit or miss.
I liked the concept, but its execution just didn’t work for me. I felt that Lucas was being written out of character. It was not in his sleeping around with various men,...

Blood Relatives
I’m having a problem connecting to this show because despite all the emotional turmoil in the lives of these characters, their reactions seem awfully muted. We finally got some reaction about the loss of his child from Oscar, and I thought the scene where he lamented he’ll probably never have another chance to have a baby was well done. But overall, I don’t get a sense of true loss from him.
And Thomas doesn’t seem to have any sort of reaction to this at all. He and Oscar are supposedly lovers and were planning this new life together with this baby, but they really haven’t discussed what happened. In fact, I really can’t recall any scenes of them interacting as a couple. And that seems unrealistic to me, as if there are beats in the story that are missing.

Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe has admitted that she is glad to see Mercedes McQueen sticking to her wild ways following the tumultuous events of 2011. Mercedes was jilted by fiancé Riley Costello (Rob Norbury) last year after she confessed to her affair with his dad Carl (Paul Opacic). She was then held captive by serial killer Silas Blissett (Jeff Rawle). Since letting Riley leave the village with their baby son Bobby, Mercedes has faced temptation after Doctor Browning offered her money to sleep with him. Metcalfe told Ok Extra of the new storyline: "It was refreshing and brilliant to go back to how Mercedes was when I first joined the show. It was good to put the Silas kidnap storyline and everything else that's happened behind her, but there are still moments where she flicks back to being quite depressed." (more)...

Hollyoaks airs its 'Best Bits' special on E4 tonight, so at Soap Scoop we thought we'd get in on the act by sharing our own favourite moment from 2011. It's been a big year for the show with highlights including the Jacqui/Gilly/Rhys storyline, Brendan and Mitzeee's scheming against Warren, and the various ups and downs for Brendan and Ste - but for us, the standout scenes of the year came in the episode which aired just after Rae's body had been found. Just as Brendan (Emmett Scanlan) was facing questions from the police after being framed by Silas, all of the major players came together in the village and watched Cheryl (Bronagh Waugh) being taken down to the station to be quizzed about the false alibi she had given for her brother when Bex was killed. With evil Silas (Jeff Rawle) watching on in satisfaction and the Scala & (more...

Hollyoaks' Silas plot has been voted the 'Best Soap Storyline' of 2011 in Digital Spy's end-of-year reader poll. The dark tale, which saw the serial killer claim four victims in the village, triumphed in the survey of our 12 million monthly users. Silas, played by Jeff Rawle, murdered India Longford (Beth Kingston), Rebecca Massey (Daisy Turner), Rae Wilson (Alice Barlow) and his own daughter Heidi Costello (Kim Tiddy) during his reign of terror. The evil grandfather also spent months tormenting nurse Lynsey Nolan (Karen Hassan), who was the only person to suspect him. Fans finally saw Silas get his comeuppance last month, when the police realised that he was responsible for the village's sinister (more)...

Maryada
I haven’t seen this show lately, so it was nice to catch this latest episode of the ongoing drama revolving around ex-boyfriends Guarav and Karan. I'm so glad to see this story continue, especially given that this is a place and a world not used to gay storytelling, at least depicted positively. I would love to know how Indian audiences are reacting to the story. If any readers might know I'd like to hear from you by either dropping me a line or commenting at the end of this column.
Back to the story, I know this is a totally cultural thing and the style of this soap, but I couldn’t help but chuckle when Karan’s mother cried about wishing she'd died before seeing her son brought home drunk. It might have been the highlight of the episode, besides watching Guarav looking so angsty and gorgeous.

Lynsey has found herself embroiled in a twisted game with Silas as he has promised to hand himself in to the police if she can figure out who he is targeting. Rawle has now told Soaplife: "Nobody is safe. Theresa's already in his sights, Lynsey is a possible and so is Mercedes - he really doesn't like the McQueens! There are lots of other women whose morals Silas would consider questionable. He has already said that Hollyoaks makes Sodom and Gomorrah look like Sunday school. It could be anyone." Good Times, Bad Times
I've read a lot of the commentary about these scenes, and I think Edwin is wildly over-reacting. He acts as if Ron was under some obligation to tell him that was gay, but I don’t think he is. It’s not like it ever came up, and Ron certainly never lied to Edwin about it. I agree with Ron that Edwin is making a big deal about it, mostly because he thinks Ron is after him.
But how does Ron hiding his sexuality, which I don’t feel he did, mean that he is out to snare Edwin? And how would not telling Edwin he was gay help Ron if he really were out to get Edwin? That does not compute to me.
Besides, thus far Ron hasn’t done anything to undermine Lucas and Edwin’s relationship. On the contrary,...

Speculation over the future of Hollyoaks' Silas storyline has reached fever pitch in recent days in the build-up to the soap's Halloween episode, which will see the evil killer commit another murder. Last week, we printed pictures showing that Silas lines up Amy Barnes, Lynsey Nolan, Texas Longford and Theresa McQueen as potential victims in the days leading up to Fright Night at Chez Chez. Meanwhile, the shocking pictures we published on Sunday showed Silas committing his next murder by using a brick to smash in the head of a mystery female. In a Grim Reaper costume, Silas (Jeff Rawle) attacks a party-goer dressed as Catwoman - but who is it? Hollyoaks bosses have now fuelled the speculation further by releasing a special promotional shot showing Silas as the Grim Reaper - and his four targets as Catwoman.

Hollyoaks star Jeff Rawle has joked that he felt guilty while filming his character Silas Blissett's current storyline with Lynsey Nolan. Silas has spent weeks terrorising Lynsey as she has correctly worked out that he is the evil killer who has claimed three victims in the village. Praising co-star Karen Hassan, who plays Lynsey, Rawle told We Love Telly: "She's amazing. She's so good in this it's not true. I spent so many hours being mean to her, I felt bad!" Silas steps up his twisted games with Lynsey in this week's episodes as he orders her to guess who his next target is, promising that he will hand himself in if she works it out. The actor has spent almost a year in the role of evil Silas Blissett, who has murdered India Longford, Rebecca Massey and Rae Wilson since making his debut on screen last December.
