The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band was a comedy rock group formed in the 1960s. The band only had one hit song, which isn’t surprising since their hit was produced by Paul McCartney. However, many of his fans wouldn’t know about his involvement as he produced the track under a pseudonym.

There are many layers to the mystique of the Chelsea Hotel. Long before it became a hipster hangout, the 12-story, 250-room fortress, built in the 1880s, was home to Mark Twain. In the ’50s, the Chelsea played host to assorted literary figures, the first of whom to lend it a dissolute aura was Dylan Thomas, who was living the lush life in room 205 when he became ill and died in 1953. The beats moved in, and so did Arthur Miller after he divorced Marilyn Monroe and Arthur C. Clarke while he was writing “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
But it was Andy Warhol who put the stamp of underground cachet on the Chelsea when he shot his three-and-a-half-hour multi-screen ramble “The Chelsea Girls” there in 1966. By the time that Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe took up residence in 1969, they already saw themselves as the next generation in the Chelsea tradition of bohemian squalor.

Russian Doll‘s co-creator and star Natasha Lyonne tonight hosted her first episode of SNL, speaking in her opening monologue about her Netflix series—which is back now for its second season following Covid delays—and more.
“Gosh, will you look at this? I’m hosting the season finale of Saturday Night Live. For a real New Yorker like me, that’s big,” Lyonne said up top. “I have a show called Russian Doll. The second season…just premiered on Netflix, and two things you really want to be associated with right now are Russia and Netflix.
Lyonne went on to say that she’s “genuinely humbled” to be hosting NBC’s sketch series and that the truth is, she feels “a cosmic connection” to it. “The people here are my real-life chosen family. It took forever — well, 122 years — but Hollywood Forever Cemetery was designated a historic-cultural monument by the Los Angeles City Council today following a unanimous recommendation from the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission.
The cemetery, which was founded in 1899, was included in the National Register of Historic Places on its 100th anniversary, but equivalent local recognition took another quarter century or so.
On June 25, 2021, Councilman Mitch O’Farrell began the city’s effort to include the cemetery on its own list of historic-cultural monuments. Following O’Farrell’s actions, the Cultural Heritage Commission considered the property on Oct. 21 and recommended the City Council add it to the list.
“I was surprised that this wasn’t already on our list,” Commissioner Richard Barron said during the meeting. “It’s always interesting when something comes before us that you think, ‘That’s not a monument yet?’ ”

The Ramones' Road To Ruin turns 40 with a previously unreleased music video and a reissue to prove it.
Some fans think The Ramones reached their peak with their fourth album, Road to Ruin, which turns 40 today. Released on September 21, 1978 through Sire Records, it followed Rocket to Russia, which saw a drop off in album sales, pushing Tommy Ramone to put more time into production. Bassist Dee Dee Ramone snagged the drummer from Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Marc Bell and rechristened him Marky Ramone, leaving Tommy to produce the album with Ed Stasium, with a nod to the Phil Spector sound. With the single "I Wanna Be Sedated" as a lead-off, Road to Ruin was considered Billboard-ready. But it only hit 103 on the charts, 50 notches down from the last record. The Ramones recently dropped a deluxe reissue of the album and found a previously unreleased video...

2017-04-05T11:54:38-07:00Rumer Willis Mixes Music, Acting on 'Empire'
When Rumer Willis’ Tory Ash debuted in Empire’s midseason premiere, it didn’t take long for her troubled past to surface.
Introduced as Jamal’s (Jussie Smollett) newest and closest confidant rehab, both Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) quickly began discussing her Heroin-induced meltdown that led to her stripping naked at Fenway Park before she was later found in a coma in a seedy motel.
“She was a big star, brilliant too,” Cookie said. “But that heroin knocked her ass right out of the sky.”
It’s a story that is unfortunately rings all too familiar in the music business, with heroin overdoses claiming the lives of Dee Dee Ramone, Sid Vicious and Janis Joplin, among many others. However, Willis says it was a much more recent figure that drew her to the recurring part.

The Notorious B.I.G. was shot to death 20 years ago on March 9, 1997. The rapper’s murder will be forever linked with that of his peer Tupac Shakur, though the pair are just in a long line of musicians who’ve shuffled off the mortal coil under less-than-clear circumstances. Even if the ink has dried on the official paperwork, rumors still abound about …

People has learned Garland’s remains have been removed from her burial place in New York and are currently en route to John F. Kennedy Airport to be flown to Los Angeles where she will be re-interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
The move is being made because her previous burial place did not have room for plots for her children (including Liza Minnelli) and grandchildren to be buried with her, People confirms.

Lately, my Weird Sounds Inside The Gold Mind kickass rock and blues Internet radio show has spilled over into my ComicMix column. But it’s hard for me to restrain myself, and besides, self-restraint isn’t exactly my long suit.
Since every living person, as well as the estates of many of the dead, makes all kinds of “big” announcements at Sdcc, the smart people (Hi, Martha!) make their big announcements the week before the show. They’ll get better exposure in the online comics news sites, and this year they avoid having to compete for attention with a 70-year old Creamsicle media hog with severe bigotry issues.
So our friends at Archie Comics cleverly chose last week to announce their latest bizarre crossover, Archie Meets The Ramones. This past decade or so, Archie Comics (as opposed to the character, Archie Andrews) have been the most innovative and risk-taking of the Original Comics Publishers.

Martin Scorsese will direct a biopic on iconic New York punk band The Ramones.
The Oscar-winning Wolf of Wall Street director is attached to make a narrative feature about the group as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of their first record, 1976's Ramones. A screenwriter is yet to be hired.
Scorsese is currently working on drama Silence, due for release in 2015.
Jeff Jampol and Dave Frey, who co-manage The Ramones' estate, will also be overseeing a documentary featuring unseen band footage shot by George Seminara in the '70s and '80s, a theatrical play and a book.
"Everybody is cooperating and moving in one direction together as a team," Jampol told Billboard.
The Ramones formed in 1974 in New York's Forest Hills, Queens neighbourhood and produced 14 studio albums in a career spanning 30 years.
Tommy Ramone, who founded the group alongside Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone, passed away earlier this year.

Hard to believe that The Rolling Stones, half of The Beatles and The Who, and a dozen more bands that started a full decade before The Ramones (1974) have outlived them, and in many cases are still touring. They were one of my favorite punk bands ever... and with the recent death of Tommy Ramone (nee Thomas Erdelyi), all four original members of one of New York's finest bands ever, we are not "glad to see you go." The first three -- lead singer Joey (nee Jeffrey Hyman, died 2001), bass player Dee Dee (nee Douglas Colvin, died 2002), and guitarist Johnny (nee John Cummings, died 2004) -- all died only within six years after calling it quits.
They did not go gently into the night. Their off-stage dramas kept them from maintaining their once shared friendships.
Ironic isn't it? The original Ramones, the guys from "Rockaway Beach" that wanted to be sedated, are all gone.

Like two girls involved in a drunken, dirty cat-fight, CBS has continued its assault on ABC, accusing them of ripping off their reality television show Big Brother (which exploits people largely for the amusement of an apathetic audience) with the ABC reality show The Glass House (which also exploits people largely for the amusement of an apathetic audience). CBS, having none of it, tried to sue them in order to stop ABC from airing the premiere episode of House, but ABC proved resilient (and didn’t particularly care for CBS’ erroneous attitude), and the episode aired anyway, proving that there certainly isn’t enough reality television shows that do the same damn thing.
Normally, this whole thing would be settled out of court or buried in a bunch of legal crap, but CBS had to let ABC know it meant "big business." So with all the wit of a teenager writing in her Tumblr,...

CBS has taken its beef with ABC to the next level.
The network is suing ABC over its new show "Glass House," saying it's too similar to the CBS show "Big Brother." The ABC series premiered on June 18, despite CBS' efforts to stop the show from airing. "Glass House" ended up premiering to mediocre ratings.

Fittingly, the final line includes the aphorism, "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.”

Taylor Hawkins has a lust for life.
The Foo Fighters drummer is preparing to get shirtless (a lot) as he signs on for the role of legendary punk rocker Iggy Pop in "Cbgb," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Iggy Pop was the frontman of Iggy Pop and the Stooges, one of the most influential punk bands from the late '68s through the mid-'70s with hits such as "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "Search and Destroy." Iggy was infamous for his antagonistic and outrageous stage antics (which were inspired by Doors lead singer Jim Morrison) and is considered the first performer to ever do a "stage dive."
Taylor Hawkins is just one of many new additions to the "Cbgb" cast, with recent hit-makers including Johnny Galecki as music manager Terry Ork, Mickey Sumner as Patti Smith, Steven Schub as Dee Dee Ramone, Evan Alex Cole as Richard Hell,...

A never-before-seen, candid interview with the late Ramone! Plus ‘Rockaway Beach’ live!
In support of the impending online premiere of The Dark Path Chronicles – a collaboration between Lovely Producer Elizabeth and Tfh Guru Mary Lambert — Ms. Mary Lambert’s been busy digging through her archives and rooting out footage from cool, old projects. In some cases, those projects were left unfinished and, largely, unseen.
The following comes from an unfinished short documentary Lambert was working on immediately prior to the death of Dee Dee Ramone. It’s got some good live performance footage of Dee Dee playing ‘Rockaway Beach,’ but what makes it notable are the candid interview moments from what would turn out to be some of Dee Dee’s last. I’m unsure when, exactly, this footage was shot, but Mary Lambert told me it went unfinished largely because of Dee Dee’s untimely death.
Sure, it’s...

A guitar played by The Who's Pete Townshend on the 'Quadrophenia Tour' has netted just over $$50,000 (£30,750) at auction. Townshend's guitar was just one of many items sold as part of a rock memorabilia auction at Christie's in London on Tuesday. David Bowie's handwritten lyrics for 'Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing Reprise' from the Diamond Dogs LP, a diary signed by members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Dee Dee Ramone's signature bass all fetched thousands at the public sale. A drum set destroyed by Kurt (more)...

Ever since fictional actor Vincent Chase from HBO's "Entourage" lost the chance to be in a biopic about Joey Ramone and his iconic punk rock band of the same name, I realized that I would absolutely love to see one of the most influential bands in rock history up on the big screen. Well it looks like we'll all get the chance as THR's Risky Biz Blog reports that Fox Searchlight is on board for a flick chronicling the musical journeys of The Ramones, with a focus on lead singer Joey Ramone, based on the the memoir I Slept with Joey Ramone set to be published this December. And there's certainly a lot of stories to tell about the punk band. Along with their punk revolution and success came many issues from fighting between members John Cummings (Johnny), Jeffrey Hyman (Joey), Thomas Erdelyi (Tommy) and Douglas Colvin (Dee-Dee) as well...

Life so often imitates art. A subplot on a past season of HBO's hit series "Entourage" saw movie star Vinny Chase (Adrien Grenier) in the running for a leading role in a Ramones biopic. A variety of factors led to that fictional project being put to rest, but wheels appear to have been turning on a similar effort back here in the real world. Fox Searchlight is negotiating to bring "I Slept With Joey Ramone," an as-yet-unreleased memoir written by the singer's brother Mickey Leigh, to the big screen, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.
Let's be clear here: this remains a developing story. The book's still-unfolding road to the silver screen has been a long one. Manager-producer Rory Rosengarten negotiated for the rights to the book -- which was still being written at the time -- and the band's music over a period of several years. Fox's involvement remains unconfirmed, though...

Danny Trejo, known for his muscle bound tattooed body and chiselled bad looks, finally gets some real documentation to answer some of the questions audiences have been asking themselves for years. His countless appearances (something over 100 by now) in films and his reputation for tough guy characters, has earned him the well-deserved respect as a hard worker on set and true-to-life actor. It’s clear from the start that the term type-cast shouldn’t even become a question with Trejo, who at the age of 25 had no acting abilities, other than the life experiences he brings with him. His face alone is like a canvas, every crevice a different story, every scar a different tale and it’s for these unique features that he was able to secure a nice spot within Hollywood as the tough guy. In Joe Eckardt’s 2005 release Champion, Trejo recounts his struggle for redemption against his troubled life involving drugs,...

On the heels of the announcement earlier this week that a 3D Night of the Living Dead remake is in the works (read that story here) comes news that the original Notld has been restored, colorized, and converted, frame by frame, into full 3D and will premiere at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 3, 2009, as a part of the 5th Annual Johnny Ramone Tribute.
San Diego-based 3D producer PassmoreLab is behind the process, which took over 12 months to complete at a cost greater than the film's original production budget and was no small feat. "I am a huge fan of this movie, and so it had to be done with complete precision," said Greg Passmore, president of PassmoreLab. "We love the genre, and as cult classics go, this is mother of them all. If you are going to convert a horror classic, this is the one...

- It's odd that one of the first sequences in (500) Days of Summer (just released yesterday) will haphazardly remind some of the famous When Harry Meet Sally diner sequence and it also happens to contain a Sid & Nancy reference - not the movie, but the maladjusted couple. It acts as a possible foreshadowing of things to come in this rom com and it is one among many references to film history (we find The Graduate, Bergman, French New Wave, Disney and Han Solo). Zooey and Joseph got together with helmer Marc Webb for a piece of viral of self-promotion for 500 Days, which reminds us of a film worth pointing to in our Weekend Rental suggestion. The 1986 film was directed by Alex Cox,lensed by Roger Deakins and featured Gary Oldman in the role of Sid Vicious. See NYTimes review after the jump. Few would have suspected, when Sid Vicious died

From Mvd Visual, Dee Dee Ramone - History On My Arms includes the 2003 documentary Hey Is Dee Dee Home plus new films History on My Arms, Vom In Paris and a bonus CD. "...'History On My Arms' captures Dee Dee Ramones' extraordinary personality in a way that has never been done before. Kowalski was struck by how playful and direct he was with the camera. How he wanted to connect with something inside of himself and expose his true nature. In 'Vom In Paris', Dee Dee also recounts the now infamous story about what happened between him, Johnny Thunders and Stiv Bators when they got together in Paris in 1989 to form a super punk group. Kowalski also invited Vom Ritchie, currently drummer for 'Die Toten Hosen' to come to Paris to explain the story as he remembers it. He was the drummer on those sessions and affectionately and vividly differs with what Dee Dee said.

Nope, not Dee Dee Ramone, a man we all know passed away back in 2002. I'm talking about Dee Dee Warwick, dead at 63, an incredible soul singer who was always overshadowed by the success of her older sister, Dionne (and later by her cousin, Whitney Houston). As with so many of the less popular R&B artists of her time, we don't know a whole lot of intimate details about Dee Dee's life—but I stumbled across a 45 of hers, an incredible Mercury single titled "Foolish Fool," years ago, and it became a staple of my DJ sets for a long time. The funny thing is, "Foolish Fool" isn't a particularly danceable song, although its loping, teardrop-paced backbeat had a languid funkiness to it that was a perfect palate-cleanser between the more stomping cuts I used to spin. A couple years back I...

Former Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone is losing his battle with terminal cancer, with bandmate Marky Ramone fearing the worst. The 55-year-old rocker - real name John Cummings - was diagnosed with prostate cancer four years ago and it has now spread throughout his body, reports rock magazine Rolling Stone Marky Ramone, drummer for the legendary group who split in 1996, says, "Johnny's been a champ in confronting this, but at this point I think the chances are slim. John never smoked cigarettes, he wasn't a heavy drinker and he was always into his health. It just proves when cancer seeks a body to penetrate, it doesn't matter how healthy you are or how unhealthy you are. It just seeps in and there's nothing you can do." The Ramones have been plagued by tragedy in recent years - singer Joey Ramone passed away in 2001 from lymphatic cancer and bassist Dee Dee Ramone died from a drug overdose the following year.

Punk pioneer Dee Dee Ramone has been found dead of a possible drug overdose in his Hollywood home. A year after the tragic death of Ramones frontman Joey Ramone, the 50-year-old bass player, whose real name is Douglas Glenn Colvin, was found dead by his wife Wednesday night. Los Angeles coroner's office operations chief Craig Harvey says, "The investigator noted drug paraphernalia, including a single syringe on the kitchen counter, and we are handling it as a possible accidental overdose." Colvin, who co-founded the group, had a love-hate relationship with his bandmates and quit the band in the late 1980s to launch a solo career as a rapper under the name Dee Dee King. He returned to the Ramones fold in the '90s, penning several tracks on their 1995 studio swan song Adios Amigos. He last shared a stage with the surviving Ramones in March, when the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In his autobiography, Lobotomy: Surviving The Ramones, Colvin cataloged his struggles with drug and alcohol abuse.
