Some movies endure as a treasured soundtrack to which the film itself becomes a mere footnote. That seems likely to prove the case with “Creation Stories,” a biopic of Creation Records’ founder Alan McGee that duly draws sonic fuel from the stellar array of Britpop bands he was involved with. But as directed by Nick Moran in obvious imitation of executive producer Danny Boyle’s most hyperbolic style, scripted by Irvine Welsh and Dean Cavanagh, this apparently loose interpretation of the subject’s memoir becomes a hyperventilating “Behind the Music” caricature, all familiar flash and precious little substance. Rlj Entertainment is releasing on demand and digital platforms in the U.S. on Feb. 25, following openings in most other territories.
McGee’s 2013 same-titled tome is a breezy yet cogent chronicle of a whirlwind career, written in the clear-eyed retrospect of sobriety after years of chemical excess. But the film immediately lunges...

"Mom... the stars are moving." 4Digital Media has debuted an official trailer for an eerie, scary sci-fi thriller titled Dark Encounter, the latest film from UK filmmaker Carl Strathie (his feature debut was the high concept space thriller Solis from last year). Written & directed by Strathie, Dark Encounter is about a family who starts to notice strange things - lights, sounds, weird things in the woods. All of this begins a year after their young daughter went missing, and might answer the question of where she went. The film stars Laura Fraser, Mel Raido, Alice Lowe, Sid Phoenix, Grant Masters, Vincent Regan, and Spike White. This looks a bit like most other aliens-in-the-woods thrillers, but there is a quality that makes it stand out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Carl Strathie's Dark Encounter, direct from 4Digital's YouTube: A year after Maisie Anderson mysteriously vanished, her family returns...

Cannes – Germany’s Zdf Enterprises and Japan’s Fuji TV have picked their team for soccer drama “The Window.”
Mel Raido (“Deep State”), Tommy Bastow (“Agatha Raisin”), stage actor Samuel Jordan, Lynn Van Royen (“Tabula Rasa”), Jodie Tyack (“The Feed”), and Carole Weyers (“Grey’s Anatomy”) will all star in the show. It heads into production in the U.K. next week, before moving to Belgium and Malta.
Co-production is commonplace in the international drama market, but not among European and Asian partners. Having pacted, Zdf Enterprises, the commercial arm of German pubcaster Zdf, and Japanese broadcaster Fuji will share international sales duties.
The pair first worked up the idea of teaming on drama at Mipcom three years ago. They unveiled the cast and full team on the show at the 2019 edition of the TV market. Berlin-based production company Boogie Entertainment developed “The Window,” and will make it with Belgium-based Velvet Films.

"I've got a big secret, wanna hear?" Broad Green Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for the new old-timers action comedy Just Getting Started, formerly titled Villa Capri until this official trailer arrived. From director Ron Shelton (of Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump, Tin Cup) the film is about an ex-fbi agent and an ex-mob lawyer in the witness protection program who have to get over their petty old folks' home rivalry in order to save themselves from a mob hit. Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones star, with a cast including Glenne Headly, Rene Russo, Joe Pantoliano, Elizabeth Ashley, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Graham Beckel, and Mel Raido. This seems to be another one of those super cheesy "old people can still be funny" comedies we see all the time that really aren't that funny. This is definitely not for me. Based on its ad campaign, the primary reason The Disappointments Room was withheld from press screenings was to preserve the illusion that it might be a haunted house or demonic possession movie in the vein of recent James Wan and/or Jason Blum productions. The movie does open with a family—Dana (Kate Beckinsale), David (Mel Raido), and their young son Lucas (Duncan Joiner)—moving into an old house out in the country. But it ditches the creaking dread of recent ghost horror, checking off boxes too quickly to generate rudimentary tension: an overhead shot of an ominously dizzying spiral staircase; a woman wandering through dark, purportedly empty rooms; implications of a dead child.
The only sustained suspense comes from wondering what kind of horror movie it will turn into, and the realization that it will not feature a clown doll or skittering little-girl ghosts is one of its chief...

Relativity has released a trailer for a surprise horror film that's coming out in the next few weeks, titled The Disappointments Room, which we haven't heard much about until now. Kate Beckinsale stars, along with Duncan Joiner, as a mother and her young son who move to their dream home but discover a creepy room in the attic. Upon opening it, they unleash "unimaginable horrors". This trailer doesn't actually show any of those horrors, as it pretty much stops when she opens the door. D.J. Caruso had a bit of a moment in the mid-2000s where it appeared he was going to be the hot new director to watch, directing Disturbia and Eagle Eye and being attached to film adaptations of Y: The Last Man and Preacher that never came to pass. But he ended up helming I Am Number Four in 2011 and his career took a big hit. He's on the rise again with xXx: The Return of Xander Cage under his belt for a release next year, but before that, we'll see him tackle a horror movie called The Disappointments Room that he co-wrote with Prison Break star Wentworth Miller.
Unfortunately, it looks like a by-the-numbers haunted house movie that treads ground we've seen covered hundreds of times before. Unless there's a huge twist or mega surprise brewing here, I can already tell I'll be skipping this one. To be fair,...

The gorgeous and talented Gemma Arterton is one of those rare actresses with the ability to both stun in arthouse films and walk away unscathed from studio trainwrecks. That’s why the actress, who last year appeared in two terrible films (Runner Runner, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) and a fascinating one (Byzantium), is one of the few performers whose films I actively seek out. Her next, a French graphic novel adaptation titled Gemma Bovery, should prove no different.
It’s clear after watching the new French-language teaser for the film (even if you can’t understand what star Fabrice Luchini is saying) that the marketing team behind this one is hoping Arterton’s ample sex appeal is more than enough to sell Gemma Bovery to audiences worldwide. Director Anne Fontaine (Adore, Coco Before Chanel) also seems content to openly ogle her star.

Tamara Drewe's Gemma Arterton may be gearing up to tackle another Posy Simmons graphic novel, but she can't do it on her own. Good news, then, because Spooks and Strike Back's Mel Raido has signed up to join her in Anne Fontaine's adaptation of Gemma Bovery.Raido will play Gemma Tate's (Arterton) ex, a roguishly charming but occasionally obnoxious food critic, who returns to Gemma's life in the Norman village in which she's settled. The problem? She's since married Charlie Bovery, and her desires and duties are soon at loggerheads.Riffing on Gustave Flaubert's great novel Madame Bovary, the results should offer interesting cultural osmosis with Coco Before Chanel director Fontaine, Arterton and co decamping to rural France for a tale of love, lust and camembert. ...

One of the hostages is undercover Mi-6 terror expert John Allen (Adrian Rawlins), identified by Crawford (Iain Glen) as Latif¹s (Jimi Mistry) inside man. Title: In Our Name Writer-director: Brian Welsh Starring: Joanne Froggatt, Mel Raido, Andrew Knott, Chloe-Jayne Wilkinson, Janine Leigh, Shah Amin A British coming-home-from-war drama that toes the line between pedestrian and interesting, though tilting toward the former, ‘In Our Name’ connects chiefly as a gender-shift curiosity given its main focus on a female soldier. Joanne Froggatt’s engaging performance, which picked up the Most Promising Newcomer prize at this past year’s British Independent Film Awards, is the chief selling point of writer-director Brian Welsh’s sophomore outing, which otherwise cycles through the expected interpersonal difficulties of trying to readjust to civilian and married life. ‘In Our Name’ opens with Suzy Jackson (Froggatt) returning...

Somewhere (15)
(Sofia Coppola, 2010, Us) Stephen Dorff, Elle Fanning, Chris Pontius. 98 mins
Let's see: a poor little lost girl; a distant, powerful father figure; artsy observations on wealth and fame – Coppola's hardly hurling herself out of her comfort zone. But there's just enough to make it work, with Dorff's disengaged movie star struggling to bond with his daughter, get a life and check out of Hotel California. It's an almost structureless essay on how celebrity is wasted on the famous.
The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader (PG)
(Michael Apted, 2010, Us) Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, Ben Barnes. 113 mins

Despite a fine performance from Joanne Froggatt, this drama about a soldier suffering post-traumatic stress loses its way
Joanne Froggatt was a deserving winner at the British Independent Film awards this week for her powerful performance in a film that doesn't match the subtlety and intelligence of her acting. She plays Suzy, an ambitious young soldier who returns to her hometown after what appears to have been a successful tour of duty in Basra; yet she has signs of post-traumatic stress that are threatening her family life and her relationship with husband Mark (Mel Raido), a former soldier who has been brutalised by his own experiences in the Middle East. The movie starts interestingly, but resorts to cliches, and the narrative becomes a familiar violent thriller that drifts into Nick Love territory. A movie that delivers less than it promises.

Newcomer Scottish director Brian Welsh's second feature, In Our Name, is a brave and moving exploration of what it's like for soldiers returning from war to suddenly adjust to the relative peace of civilian life.
Having undergone gunner training in North-West Iraq, Suzy returns home fourteen months later to a welcome party and Union Jack flags. At first she's seems unaffected by her “tough but rewarding” tour; but as the days pass, her husband, Mark, notices she's emotionally and sexually withdrawn, and fellow officer Paul describes her as “out of it”.
Haunted by the memory of a young Iraqi girl's death, for which Suzy feels responsible, having given the reluctant child sweets only to later see her gunned down for communicating with soldiers. Her own daughter, Cass, acts as a constant reminder of the event for Suzy, and she soon becomes unhealthily obsessed with protecting her - the gang...

The protagonist of In Our Name is Suzy (Joanne Froggat), a British soldier returning home after a traumatic tour in Iraq. Suzy returns to the embrace of her wider family, her husband Mark (Mel Raido) and her young daughter Cass (Chloe Jayne Wilkinson). Her husband Mark (Mel Raido) is preoccupied with getting Suzy into bed as soon as possible and seems to care little about her mental state or the fraught relationship between her and her daughter. Suzy is clearly not well though and the lack of care and attention to this from her husband in the early scenes sets up his character as uncaring and incredibly unlikeable.
The central performance by Joanne Froggat as the troubled soldier is quite adept but it is not enough as In Our Name constantly fails in almost every other area. The supporting performances are very weak in places despite having little to do...
