- William Pittenger was born on January 31, 1840 in Knoxville, Ohio, USA. He was a writer. He died on April 24, 1904.
- His memoir, "Daring and Suffering: A History of the Great Railroad Adventure" (1863) records his part in the recovery of a stolen railroad train, an incident known as Andrews' Raid, or the Chattanooga Railroad Expedition of 1862. This is the incident on which The General (1926) is based.
- Upon his death, his remains were interred at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Fallbrook, San Diego County, California. HIs location plot is Section A and grave 15.
