For many in our industry, 2020 was an incredible challenge. From the cancellation of film shoots and festivals, to the shutdown of cinemas and theatres. From the shake-up of the Producer Offset, to the initial suspension and then watering down of Australian content sub-quotas. For those of us releasing an independent feature in this changing and unpredictable landscape, we’ve had to become even more flexible and innovative to ensure our films not only reach audiences, but that we remain viable in a market where the obstacles continue to multiply.
This time last year we were in the midst of a successful festival run for my second feature: Australia’s first women’s horror anthology Dark Whispers – Volume 1 featuring 11 women directors from across the country. The project combined my love for dark genre with my passion for advocacy for gender equality in the screen industry by spotlighting female voices in horror.

Organisers of the Tribeca Film Festival have announced this year's line-up of 60 short films, 22 of which are world premieres.
The international festival was founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, producer Jane Rosenthal and real-estate investor Craig Hatkoff to help revitalise Manhattan's Tribeca neighbourhood following the 9/11 terrorist attack.
The 2011 event - presented by founding sponsor American Express - will run from April 20 to May 1. The 60 shorts represent 21 countries, including the UK, and feature stars from around the globe.
In a new development this year, the recipient of the Tff Best Narrative Short award will qualify for consideration in the Short Films category of the Oscars without the standard theatrical run, provided the film otherwise complies with Academy rules.
The short film program, drawn from 2,862 submissions, will be presented in eight thematic programs, which are detailed below.
There is a broad spectrum of styles and storytelling, from zombies taking over Manhattan to the humanitarian effort in Haiti.

Contrary to reports, the film adaptation of A View From the Bridge, set to be shot in Melbourne later this year, has received a provisional certificate to receive the Producer Offset.
“Contrary to the recent article in The Australian, we do have our provisional certification as a qualifying Australian film,” producer Marion Pilowsky told Encore.
The newspaper reported that the film had been denied a provisional certificate.
The film will be a 100 percent Australian project, produced by actor Anthony Lapaglia, Australian UK-based producer Marion Pilowsky, and La-based producer Natalie Stevenson. The cast includes Lapaglia, Mia Wasikowska, Vera Farmiga and Sebastian Sant. The screenplay has been written by Andrew Bovell.
A View From the Bridge received an incentive from Victoria’s Production Investment Attraction Fund to shoot in the state instead of New York, where the story is set.

The film adaptation of Arthur Miller’s award-winning play A View From the Bridge will be directed by Robert Connolly and made in Melbourne this year, with pre-production, filming and post to take place in the state.
The film will be 100 percent an Australian project, produced by actor Anthony Lapaglia, Australian UK-based producer Marion Pilowsky, and La-based producer Natalie Stevenson.
The cast includes Lapaglia, Mia Wasikowska, Vera Farmiga and Sebastian Sant. The screenplay has been written by Andrew Bovell; according to Film Victoria CEO Sandra Sdraulig, “at least 70 crew” will be from Victoria.

LONDON -- British production and financing company Priority Pictures, founded by the oldest new kids on the block, steps into the European arena at a time widely regarded by industry observers as the hardest ever for independent moviemakers. Set up by the debonair former Channel Four management executive Colin Leventhal and feisty U.K.-based Australian straight talker Marion Pilowsky, Priority is gearing up for its first campaign at the Marche du Film next month in Cannes. Priority will also draw on the experience of former Miramax acquisitions chief Trea Hoving, who is a card-carrying consultant advising on everything from script acquisition to development and production. Hoving is also a consultant with Focus Features, helping the Universal specialty arm to expand its strong reputation for being a director-led company across the rest of Europe.

Focus Features has struck a two-year first-look pact with Priority Pictures, the U.K. film development, finance and production company formed in June by Colin Leventhal and Marion Pilowsky. The deal -- which gives Focus worldwide rights, including international sales, to Priority films made under the current deal -- encompasses advisory arrangements with Leventhal and Priority consultant Trea Hoving on potential acquisitions of European-based films for Focus to distribute. Focus already has a similar deal with Stephane Sperry's Paris-based Liaisons Films. The London-based Priority staff will work closely with Focus president of production John Lyons and Lee Magiday, Focus' U.K.-based vp and European acquisitions and productions executive.

The company's first production, Three Bad Men, will be helmed by Paul Weiland (City Slickers 2) from a script by Paul Straughan. Billed as a black comedy, the movie details the story of three hit men on the run who decide to change their lives. Scheduled to begin shooting in the fall, the budget is set at about $25 million, Leventhal said.

LONDON -- Los Angeles- and London-based financing and production company Myriad Pictures said Monday that it is scaling back its British base and relocating all sales activities to Los Angeles "due to the changing independent production and distribution environment worldwide," president Kirk D'Amico said. After assessing the slew of tax changes and co-production rules announced in the United Kingdom recently, Myriad said it still aims to remain involved in production here under the control of Marion Pilowsky, the company's head of international production. But the company's central-London office is expected to shutter to relocate to smaller premises, and a handful of staff will leave, Myriad said.

Myriad Pictures has acquired international rights, excluding Australia and New Zealand, to the Australian comedy-thriller You Can't Stop the Murders. The film -- the directorial debut of well-known Aussie comedian Anthony Mir -- centers on a peaceful village that is turned upside down by a sudden murder spree, with victims including a biker, a construction worker, a sailor, a cowboy and an Indian. The local lawmen quickly figure out that the killer is plotting a twisted "reunion" of the characters portrayed by '70s disco act Village People and that the next victim is going to be a cop. Mir co-wrote the screenplay with comedians Gary Eck and Akmal Saleh, both of whom also star in the film. Murders is set to open March 13 in Australia via Miramax Films' new local distribution partnership with Buena Vista International. Myriad will present the project to international buyers at Cannes in May. "This is a wild, fun and really offbeat movie starring top-notch comedians," Myriad topper Kirk D'Amico said. "We think it's the kind of comedy that can play well in any market." Murders is a production of Big Mo Films and was produced by Anastasia Sideris. Marion Pilowsky, head of international production at Myriad, negotiated the deal with Sideris.
