You don't get to be the longest-running children's show in U.S. TV history by doing the same thing over and over. So even though parents who grew up watching Sesame Street can still see old favorites like Big Bird, things on the street have changed since the show debuted 45 years ago on Nov. 10, 1969. Cookie Monster now exercises self-control and sometimes eats fruits and vegetables. Millions of kids watch the show on phones and computers instead of TV. And there's less time spent on the street with human characters. They're just not energetic enough for today's viewers. In Britain, a BBC kids' show,...

Move over Elmo, there’s a new character on the block.
"Sesame Street" has announced they are introducing a new Latino character and his name is Armando. As it heads into its 44th season the classic kids show will focus on Hispanic heritage.
Armando or ‘Mando’ as he will be known on the show is a writer from Puerto Rico. He will not be the first bilingual character on the cast, "Sesame Street" already has Muppets Rosita and Ovejita, as well as Luis and Maria, according to a press release from Sesame Workshop.
The search for the newest Latino addition began in August 2012 and many hopefuls passed through the auditions that tested their Spanish fluency, vocal abilities and comedic timing.
The lucky winner was Ismael Cruz Córdova a Puerto Rico native with a Bfa from Nyu Tisch School of the Arts.

Los Angeles -- Jerry Nelson, the puppeteer behind a delightful menagerie of characters including Count von Count on "Sesame Street" and Gobo Fraggle on "Fraggle Rock," has died. He was 78.
Nelson, who suffered from emphysema, died Thursday night in his Massachusetts home on Cape Cod, the Sesame Workshop said Friday.
"Every description of his characters describes Jerry as well," said "Sesame Street" executive producer Carol-Lynn Parente. "Silly, funny, vulnerable, passionate and musical, for sure. That voice of his was superb."
Although he'd been in declining health for some time "his attitude was never bad," Parente said Friday. "He was always so grateful for what he had in his life."
"We're having a rough day on the Street," she said.
In a tribute posted online by the nonprofit Sesame Workshop, Nelson was lauded for his artistry and the "laughter he brought to children worldwide" with the Count and other Muppet puppets including Sherlock Hemlock,...

Elmo has invited Katy Perry to have another play date on "Sesame Street". When asked about the axing of their "Hot N Cold" segment during his appearance on "Good Morning America" on Friday, September 24, the furry red muppet declared, "Elmo loves Ms. Katy and we had a good time. So we'll have another date."
Producer Carol-Lynn Parente, who joined Elmo for the special appearance, also used the chat to address the controversy surrounding Katy's appearance on the show. "We would never produce anything that we thought was inappropriate. We were surprised not only by the amount of feedback but how fast it came in," she said.
"We have a great interactive relationship with our viewers, particularly parents," Carol-Lynn continued. "They trust 'Sesame Street'. We take that seriously and so we viewed a lot of the feedback and made what we thought was an appropriate decision." She further let out that...

If his recent airport scuffle taught us anything about lanky, snug-trousered British comedian Russell Brand, it's that the "Get Him to the Greek" star will stop at nothing to defend the honor of his beloved bride-to-be, Katy Perry.
So it was just a matter of time before Brand weighed in on the Perry "Sesame Street" boob-gate, which resulted in the vaunted children's program announcing this week that the too-hot-for-toddlers segment featuring Perry, her cleavage and Elmo duetting on the singer's "Hot N Cold" would not air due to concerns from some parents.
Good old Rusty Rockets took to his Twitter feed Friday morning (September 24) and joked, "@katyperry today's Sesame Street will Not be brought to you by the number 34 or the letter D.

New York -- In its 40th anniversary season, "Sesame Street" has hit its highest ratings in its core demo in several years.
Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organization behind the kids TV evergreen on PBS Kids Go!, on Monday touted a nearly 60% year-over-year ratings increase for February, the latest month, for which the public broadcaster reported figures. And it cited format and visual changes implemented this year to keep up with changing viewing habits as key drivers.
The 40th season, which premiered in November, is averaging a 3.5 Nielsen rating for the current TV season in the core kids ages 2-5 demo. A spokeswoman said this is the best season average since 2007 for the show, which airs Monday-Friday.
The producers said the show is maintaining its audience among 2-year-olds, but showing double-digit increases among 3- and 4-year-olds (up 21% and 32%, respectively, over last season).
For February, the K2-5 rating hit 3.5, compared with 2.2 in the year-ago period.
