Austin Butler may not be confirmed to be co-starring in Michael Mann’s Heat 2, but the Masters of the Air actor has now been reported to be set to be the lead in Caught Stealing. Since 2022’s Elvis, Austin Butler’s star has really taken off. The former Disney and Nickelodeon child actor is capitalizing on his breakout film with roles in the recently released Dune: Part Two, where he plays the ruthless Feyd-Rautha. However, Butler hasn’t turned his back on smaller films, as he is set to co-star alongside Tom Hardy in Jeff Nichols’ period drama, The Bikeriders.
Now The Hollywood Reporter is saying Butler will be working with Darren Aronofsky for Sony’s crime drama that “follows Hank Thompson, a burned-out former baseball player, as he’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ‘90s NYC.” Caught Stealing will be penned by Charlie Huston,...

Butler will star in the crime thriller Caught Stealing, which hails from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. Social media users recently marveled that last month marked 20 years since three modern Christmas favorites — New Line’s Elf, Universal’s Love Actually and Miramax’s Bad Santa — all hit theaters within weeks of each other. Two decades later, you don’t need to feel like a cotton-headed ninny-muggins if you’re among those wondering why studios don’t release holiday theatrical offerings in the way they once did.
Although most Christmas films don’t tend to follow the path of, say, 1990’s Home Alone, which topped the domestic box office for a whopping 12 straight weeks, they had typically been a staple of the release calendar, with a handful of titles hitting theaters annually, as recently as the late 2010s. That list includes such 2016 theatrical offerings as Almost Christmas, Bad Santa 2, Office Christmas Party and Why Him?, followed by 2017’s Daddy’s Home 2, A Bad Moms Christmas and animated...

Yes, streaming killed the romantic comedy star, but Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are hoping to change that with the pre-Christmas theatrical release of their Sony movie, Anyone but You.
While streaming has hogged up a large number of star-driven comedies and romantic comedies, which have been sparse at theaters, it’s not to say that they don’t work when done right on the big screen.
Post pandemic the Universal Hawaii-set George Clooney-Julia Roberts reteam Ticket to Paradise was a bright spot for older audiences last fall with a $16.5M opening, $68.2M domestic result, $168.7M WW final take. Pre-pandemic, let’s not forget about Warner Bros.’ Crazy Rich Asians which opened to $26.5M, and finaled at $174.8M domestic, $239.3M WW.

In Sony’s new comedy No Hard Feelings, Jennifer Lawrence’s 32-year-old character is hired by a couple of helicopter parents to “date” their 19-year-old son, played by Andrew Barth Feldman.
Yes, in both the ad the parents post on Craigslist and in the awkward in-person meeting of Lawrence’s Maddie with the mother and father played by Laura Benanti and Matthew Broderick, date, in quotes, appears to be a euphemism.
“Do you mean date him or date him?” Maddie pointedly asks when she meets the parents.

The first trailer for Sony’s sex comedy No Hard Feelings, hitting theaters June 23, includes star Jennifer Lawrence consoling an ex by declaring she hasn’t forgotten him: “Last night, I thought, ‘I miss that fucker.’ ” Moviegoers might share similar nostalgia, recalling a not-long-ago era when studio offerings centering on ribald jokes would regularly play theatrically — before going missing.
This summer suggests a possible changing of the tide. As audiences return to cinemas post-pandemic, studios appear to be using the next few months as a testing ground for the theatrical return of the R-rated comedy. No Hard Feelings, about an awkward teen whose parents hire Lawrence’s character to date him, will later have company from Lionsgate’s Joy Ride (July 7), Universal’s Strays (Aug. 18) and MGM’s Bottoms (Aug. 25). Such projects are akin to horror films in offering viewers the experience of watching shocking moments with a group of like-minded strangers.

That prerecorded video set the tone for the very, very bloody first footage, which Sony rolled to the riled-up attendees — movie theater owners, mostly — at the Caesar’s Palace Colosseum in Las Vegas. What we got wasn’t technically a trailer, we were told: Sony executive Sanford Panitch said the full “Kraven” trailer will be released in theaters this summer.
The teaser (let’s call it) ended with the reveal of the film’s baddie, the classic Spider-Man villain The Rhino; the audience seemed to dig that.

Smith beamed: “What’s up CinemaCon? We’re glad we’re not there, cause we’re here and they’re paying us to be here!”
“Bad Boys 4 is coming, we’re hyped, excited. We’re in the fourth week of shooting; everything is going to be spectabulous,” he added before bringing Sony Motion Pictures Group president Josh Greenstein onstage.
The duo didn’t announce a title for the new movie, which sees Bad Boys for Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah returning behind the camera. No date has been set for the sequel. The franchise currently counts $840.7 million in box office through three movies.

Joined by director Neil Blomkamp, Sony unspooled high-octane footage of race car driving in a sneak peek at Gran Turismo, Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions’ feature adaptation of the best-selling racing video game, on Wednesday during its CES press conference in Las Vegas.
Slated for an Aug. 11 theatrical release, Gran Turismo was lensed with Sony’s Venice 2 cameras using its Rialto extension system that effectively detaches the sensor from the camera. This allowed the filmmakers to put cameras in the very tight spaces inside the cars, just as the filmmakers on Top Gun: Maverick used this camera system to put these small camera devices inside fighter jets.
Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the Columbia Pictures film is described by the studio as the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.

Sony strapped on their racing gloves at this year’s CES convention in Las Vegas, debuting a first look teaser for the studio’s upcoming “Gran Turismo” film based on the video game racing franchise.
“Gran Turismo” is directed by Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”), and is both inspired by the video game and based on the true story of teen gamer Jann Mardenborough who became a professional race car driver after winning a series of Nissan competitions thanks to his gaming skills. Though the teaser itself doesn’t show off any of that story, it features the film’s star Archie Madekwe as Mardenborough alongside Orlando Bloom and David Harbour discussing the sleek action and visuals that aim to recapture the look of the games.
“It’s badass race car action that you’re going to feel like you’re in the middle of,” Harbour said in the clip.

Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind “Dune” and “Godzilla vs. Kong,” has cut ties with Warner Bros. and entered a multi-year worldwide film distribution partnership with Sony Pictures.
Under the new agreement, Sony will market and distribute Legendary’s upcoming theatrical motion picture titles. However, select existing projects at Legendary are exempt from the pact, meaning Warner Bros. Pictures is still backing “Dune: Part Two.” The sequel to 2021’s sci-fi adaptation “Dune” is currently in production and slated for release on Nov. 3, 2023.
In a press release, Sony Pictures and Legendary emphasized that the companies are aligned in their “ongoing commitment to theatrical distribution as a driver for other ‘downstream’ windows and the theatrical window’s long-term value for films.”
That sentiment may be a not-so-subtle nod to Legendary’s public spat with Warner Bros. in late 2020. At the time, the production company threatened to take legal action over Warners.’ decision...

Legendary Entertainment — Hollywood’s high-profile producer and co-financier of big-budget studio fare — has found a new partner in Sony Pictures.
Under the terms of the deal, Legendary’s movies will be distributed and marketed globally by Sony, excluding China, where Legendary East will handle those duties. Sony will also handle home entertainment and TV distribution for those films. Sony does not have a streaming service, and Legendary will continue to partner with other companies for streaming, as it has with Netflix on the Enola Holmes films.
The pact does not include the Dune or Godzilla franchises, which will continue to be released by Warner Bros., Legendary’s previous partner. Dune: Part Two is due out from Warners on Nov. 3, 2023.
There is no formal deal for Sony to co-finance Legendary films, though it’s possible the two could explore that option down the road.

The Maria Beetle author, alongside the director and writer of its big screen adaptation Bullet Train, have opened up about the film’s decision to cast non-Japenese actors in the upcoming Sony feature film.
In an interview with The New York Times, author Kōtarō Isaka was asked about how his story — which was originally published in Japan in 2010 and had its English language debut in print last year — has been adapted by Hollywood.
According to the Times, the author regards his characters as “ethnically malleable,” and maintains his original Japanese setting and context do not matter as much, as the story’s ragtag crew of killers are “not real people, and maybe they’re not even Japanese.”

Sony Boss Says Studio Deserves Some Credit for ‘Top: Gun Maverick’ Box Office: ‘Venom’ Paved the Way
Tom Cruise’s “Top: Gun Maverick” is the box winner of the year so far, and it’s not even close. The long-awaited sequel has earned 617 million and counting at the domestic box office and 1.2 billion so far worldwide. Outside of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and its 1.9 billion gross, “Top: Gun Maverick” has been hailed by many in the press as reigniting the box office after the pandemic woes. But not so fast, say Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group co-presidents Sanford Panitch and Josh Greenstein. The duo recently told Vulture that Sony deserves some credit for “Top Gun: Maverick’s” box office dominance.

A new normal has descended on Hollywood as studios keep mining their intellectual property archives: tap into the huge gold mine nostalgia can provide at the box office by going back and casting original franchise actors in an umpteenth sequel or reboot. Look no farther than the success of Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home — which features prior Spidey stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield alongside current Spider-Man Tom Holland — or Paramount’s Tom Cruise sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

“My agent, Josh Donen, said, ‘They want to be honest with you. There’s about 18 directors they’d rather have than you on a list,'” Raimi recalls. “And I said, ‘Ok, well, tell them I’m number 19.'”
When Raimi finally did get a meeting, he found himself in a room that included Sony Pictures CEO John Calley, Columbia Pictures chair Amy Pascal, Marvel Studios chief Avi Arad, Sony film executive Matt Tolmach and the film’s producer, Laura Ziskin. (Calley and Ziskin died in 2011.) To break the ice, Raimi started talking about why he loves Spider-Man so much. He talked about the painting of the web-slinger that hung on his childhood bedroom wall.

Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” won’t be released in theaters until June 2, 2023, but that didn’t stop the studio from revealing the first 15 minutes of its upcoming CGI-animated sequel at the Las Vegas CinemaCon Monday night. First reactions to the new footage were, well, off the wall.
The first of two planned sequels to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “Across the Spider-Verse” is the followup to the 2019 Best Animated Feature Academy Award winner produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. And those two were on hand at the Caesars Palace Colosseum to tease a rough cut of Miles Morales’ next chapter, which is still in its early phases of rendering and animation, they said. The film did, after all, just move back from its planned October 2022 release date to June of next year.

Rapper Bad Bunny will star as Marvel’s first-ever Latino lead character in a live-action film when he takes on the role of El Muerto, Sony Pictures revealed in its presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas Monday.
The Puerto Rican musician will star as a superpowered wrestler whose powers are passed down from generation to generation. In comic books, El Muerto, aka Juan Carlos, fights Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match and nearly unmasks Peter Parker.
The film will be released on January 12, 2024, Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch said.
Bad Bunny made a brief appearance at the Monday evening presentation at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, where he talked about working on the film.
“This opportunity to bring El Muerto to life, it’s amazing. It’s incredible,” he said. “I love wrestling, I grew up watching wrestling and now I’m a wrestler … I think it’s the perfect role for me.

Introduced by Sony Motion Pictures Group president Sanford Panitch at CinemaCon, the annual gathering of movie theater owners in Las Vegas, Ocasio will be the first ever Latino actor to headline a live-action Marvel movie.
“To bring El Muerto to life is just incredible .. so exciting,” the chart-topping rapper told the crowd, adding that he grew up a fan of wrestling.
Known as Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez in the comics, El Muerto is a wrestler whose powers are handed down by ancestry in the form of a mask. In past comic narratives, El Muerto has gotten in the ring with Spider-Man himself. On stage at CinemaCon,...

Sony is in the works on a movie about “El Muerto,” a Latino antihero, as part of its crop of Marvel characters, and they’ve tapped recording superstar Bad Bunny to play the luchador comics character.
Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch announced the live-action “El Muerto” movie as part of the studio’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Monday, and he further announced that the new film will debut on January 12, 2024, exclusively in theaters.
“El Muerto” is the first Latino character to lead a Marvel film, and the antihero character is also known as Juan Carlos Estrada Sanchez, the son of a luchador who finds himself next in line to inherit the ancestral power of “El Muerto,” which is the powers and a mask worn by a super-powered wrestler.
Bad Bunny’s jump into the ring on the big screen is a natural fit for him.

Looking to continue to expand and diversify its universe of Marvel characters, Sony has announced a El Muerto movie is in development with Latin Grammy winner and platinum-selling recording artist Bad Bunny attached to star. The news came out of Cinemacon during Sony’s panel where Bad Bunny made a surprise appearance.
The character of El Muerto aka Juan Carlos was a super powered wrestler who originally fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match in which he nearly unmasked the webslinger before being stung by Spider-Man with a paralyzing poison. After his oppressor El Dorado came to claim his life, he was saved by Spider-Man, after which the two team up to defeat Dorado.
El Muerto would mark the first Latin superhero to get his own film in the universe of Marvel characters, coming right after Sony recently dated Madame Web, which marked the first female character from the Spider-Man...

With the box office’s rebound just as 5K attendees are reconvening at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, exhibition and studios can rest easy knowing that there’s a return to a theatrical window. For most studios with tentpole fare, that’s 45 days, and for those titles with less commercial appeal or aimed at specialty audiences, it’s 17 days.
With a summer box office that’s loaded with such window-respecting movies as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Top Gun: Maverick, Thor: Love & Thunder, Jurassic World: Dominion, Lightyear, Elvis, Nope, Bullet Train, and more, it’s pretty safe to say that most of the majors have gotten their jonesing for day-and-date out of their system. They’ve largely learned that collapsed windows siphon ticket sales, spur greater piracy and infuriates talent. Studio executives are re-awakening to the power of windows, and if there’s any indication to which way the wind is blowing,...

Sony's 'Universe of Marvel Characters' include "Morbius", “Kraven The Hunter", "Silver Sable", "Nightwatch", "Silk", "Jackpot" and “Black Cat" :
"We have the next seven or eight years laid out as to what we’re going to do with that asset", said Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra about the studio's "Spider-Man" spin-off movie rights.
"And that will not only be on the film side -- it’ll be on the TV side as well. Our television group will have its own set of characters from within that universe that we will seek to develop."
