The members of two screenwriter unions, the Federation of Screenwriters in Europe (Fse) and the International Affiliation of Writers Guilds (Iawg), have passed a joint resolution calling for the “ethical use” of artificial intelligence based on guidelines that respect their copyright. The move comes amid the rapid rollout of new high-powered AI tools that some see as a threat to jobs and business models in the creative industries.
Among the principles outlined in the statement are that only human writers, not AI models, be granted copyright for original works, that only licensed material be used to train said models, and that mechanisms be put in place to ensure writers are informed if AI is used to write, rewrite, polish or perform any additional writing services.
Irish screenwriter and Iawg chair Jennifer Davidson said the international screenwriter guilds want to build on “the hard-won protections our sister guilds in America, the Wgae and the Wgaw,...

A global coalition of screenwriters’ organizations and unions, including the Writers Guild of America East and West, has collectively resolved to push for “robust licensing mechanisms” that require clear consent if scribes’ material is used to train AI tools.
The Federation of Screenwriters in Europe and International Affiliation of Writers Guilds is set to announce Thursday that they had passed a joint resolution on ethical use of AI. That resolution calls, in part, for member groups to pursue a goal in 2024 of ensuring “only intellectual property that has been licensed for such use be included in the datasets of commercialized LLMs, or any other present or future forms of AI.”
The resolution also calls for the groups to work towards preventing any forms of AI from replacing writers, to push for transparency measures that inform writers if AI is used for any writing services like polishes or re-writes, to advocate...

“Screenwriters in Europe are in awe of the organization, determination and solidarity of our friends and colleagues in the Writers Guilds of America, East and West, in their fight to defend and protect their profession from the sustained assaults they are currently facing.” That’s how German screenwriter Carolin Otto, president of the Federation of Screenwriters in Europe (Fse) on Wednesday praised her striking colleagues across the Atlantic.
The federation, bringing together 31 screenwriters’ organizations from 25 European countries, joined the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (Wggb) and writers in the media and entertainment sectors around the world for Wednesday’s “Screenwriters Everywhere,” a global day of solidarity with the striking Hollywood scribes.
“We are all too familiar with the attacks that threaten to make a career as a screenwriter unsustainable,” Otto (Lena Lorenz, Bier Royal) continued. “In Europe, and across the globe, screenwriters are exploited for their commitment to their work.

Screenwriter Carolin Otto, president of the Federation of Screenwriters in Europe, states the urgency of "repairing and finding new processes, so that we can go back to work". After the worst of the virus we cannot simply go back to how we were, without consideration. We cannot pretend it didn’t happen. Health, social, environmental and economic reconstruction throughout Europe (and the World) will challenge politics and every one of us. As Minister for Culture we feel sure that you will agree that this virus is not just health, not just economics, not just politics – it goes deeper and attacks what it means...
