When we talk about classic TV shows from the '70s, it's hard not to mention "The Six Million Dollar Man." Airing for five seasons on ABC, the show focuses on astronaut Steve Austin who is gravely injured in a spaceship crash. He then undergoes a government surgery that replaces his body parts with machine parts, making him part man, part cyborg. With the new powers afforded him by these upgrades, Steve goes to work for the Office of Scientific Information, battling evil forces.
The show ran for 99 episodes and inspired six TV movies. Mark Wahlberg has even been attached to star in a big-screen adaptation of the show for years now, with the project stalling out at various points. 1992's "X-Men" cartoon was the first time Marvel's Merry Mutants got a series all of their own, but was it the first time they appeared in animation? Not quite.
The team were guest stars on the early 1980s series "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends", as was their nemesis Magneto. A few years down the line, Marvel Productions decided to produce an "X-Men" cartoon themselves.
The resulting pilot was "Pryde of the X-Men". "Pryde" boasted animation from Japanese studio Toei ("Dragon Ball Z"), and so looked noticeably more detailed and dynamic than previous Marvel cartoons. Where it did overlap with those older cartoons was the voice cast: the late John Stephenson as Professor X, Michael Bell as Cyclops, Neil Ross as Nightcrawler, Dan Gilvezan as Colossus, and a young Kath Soucie as Kitty.
Patrick Pinney, as Wolverine, infamously gives his character an Australian accent (apparently a synergistic holdover from a...

Voice actor David Kaye still remembers getting the news he'd been cast on "Transformers: Animated." Two weeks after a callback where he read for multiple characters, he got a call from his agent. Kaye, who was driving in downtown LA, answered his phone and heard the news: he'd got the part ... of Optimus Prime. Kaye's response as he swerved his car: "Who?!"
While Kaye had read for Optimus Prime (and noticed voice director Susan Blu liked what he was doing), he walked into the audition expecting to get a different part. The part, in fact, that was furthest from Optimus Prime — Megatron. At the time, Kaye had been voicing Megatron for about a decade, first in "Beast Wars."
During the 1990s and 2000s, Kaye was a staple of Canada's voice-acting pool. Mainframe Entertainment, based in Vancouver, developed "Beast Wars" and recruited local talent, Kaye among them. A few years later,...

Let's be real: Dragons are awesome! Since ancient Mesopotamians whispered about Tiamat and Marduk's red serpent servant, the legend of dragons thrived. For generations, these scaly creatures have induced fear and delight. Tolkien drew from these myths to bring the creature into the modern fantasy canon, with his childhood love of Fafnir, Siegfried's legendary foe, transformed into the prideful Smaug. Now the fantasy genre is almost synonymous with dragons. Of course, the '70s introduction of Dungeons & Dragons helped, too! Today, there's a resurgence of love for these big fellas -- starring in movies like "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Raya and the Last Dragon."
Putting dragons on the big screen is a huge technical challenge. Not every movie's budget can commit to that feat. For decades, animation came to the rescue -- pitching price-conscious versions to younger and more accepting viewers. But after the release of "Jurassic Park,...

Up until a few years ago, there was a shady little pub here in Brno, Czech Republic, that only had one desirable feature: A six-foot statue of the lovable Rockbiter creature from "The NeverEnding Story." I would even take people there to suffer bad beer just so we could marvel at that unexpected monument to Wolfgang Petersen's dark fantasy adventure. It wasn't the only legacy of the film's enduring popularity around here; Limahl's title song, which was a hit single across Europe, is still played on regular rotation on the local radio station. It is one of the many benefits of living in the Czech Republic.
"The NeverEnding Story," based on the first half of Michael Ende's epic fantasy novel, was Petersen's next project after spending three years making his tense U-boat drama, "Das Boot." The German director received an Oscar nomination for his troubles but wanted...

The Pitch: Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) has dreamed of one thing since she was eight years old, according to the film's opening title card: essentially, to be a wife. Specifically, "All I want [...] is a big house ... nice clothes, two closets, a live-in maid, and a professional man for a husband." "Private Benjamin" starts by giving Judy everything she's ever wanted, starting with a huge wedding to a professional man named Yale Goodman (played perfunctorily by Albert Brooks), who promptly dies while consummating their marriage later that same night.

The late Wolfgang Petersen's 1984 film "The NeverEnding Story," while ostensibly a fantasy film, lacks the genre's expected sense of lighthearted, dazzling wonderment. Indeed, the film's fantasy sequences bear a tragic note of muddy entropy, and fantastical characters live in a state of resigned abnegation. Despite amazing special effects and myriad imaginative monsters, "The NeverEnding Story" is most notable for its overwhelming ennui. A savvy youth might be so beleaguered by the film's sadness, they may find its final moments of triumph to feel artificial, like the hero may only be imagining his own escape from pain. The film ends with a moment of mourning, of acceptance that a parent is dead. Some find the film uplifting. Others may not.

Walter Mirisch earned his Oscar for this Sidney Poitier hit directed by Norman Jewison. The tense mystery thriller was also a significant cultural step for Civil Rights, Hollywood-style: Poitier’s Virgil Tibbs claims the right to not turn the other cheek. Stars Rod Steiger, Lee Grant, Warren Oates and Larry Gates are in top form. Kino’s new 4K release maximizes the impact of Haskell Wexler’s steamy cinematography and Quincy Jones’ rich music, and includes bonus Blu-ray encodings of the two sequels made a few years later.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’s most popular character should be He-Man, right? His name is in the title! Anyone who’s watched almost any incarnation of the franchise though knows who the real star of the show is. Skeletor, the big bad of the series. Even if you’ve never watched an episode you’ve now doubt seen a gif rendition of Skeletor’s iconic laugh or heard his “Nyeh!” Compilations of his insults have racked up millions of views on YouTube and his face graces endless memes. The character is etched in pop culture history.

Mattel Television and Netflix released the first look “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” and it turns out the characters — including He-Man, Skeletor, Teela and Orko — look a lot like they did on the beloved 1980s animated series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,” just a bit glowed up.
They also announced the show will premiere globally on July 23.
Since the series was announced in 2019, fans have been speculating just what executive producer and showrunner Kevin Smith — writer-director of “Clerks,” “Chasing Amy” and “Dogma” — would be doing with the property. As the images make clear, Smith and the team at Powerhouse Animation (also the animation studio behind Netflix’s “Castlevania” series) are paying homage not just to the look of the original series, but its storylines as well.

Tarzan, Space Sentinels, The New Adventures Of Batman, Flash Gordon, Bravestarr and more, as we salute Filmation...
For a child of the 1970s and 80s, nothing readied you for a half hour of quality entertainment quite like the Filmation logo. Immortalised by their phenomenal success with He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe, and its spin off She-Ra: Princess Of Power, Filmation produced some of the most fondly remembered animated series to grace the small screen.
Over a period of 26 years - in tandem with classic Doctor Who funnily enough - the company's writers, artists and producers delivered a staggering amount of programming. While naysayers point to Filmation's penchant for reusing a stockpile of rotoscoped body movements, or the heavy handedness of its moralising and educational content - children on the other hand, thrilled to an irresistible mixture of action, adventure and superhuman heroes.
Now something of a lost art form,...

For years, we’ve heard about attempts to remake Westworld and it’s actually happening this time. HBO has officially committed to a pilot order for a potential Westworld TV series.
Jonathan Nolan, brother of Christopher Nolan, will direct the pilot and will co-write the script with Lisa Joy, according to Variety. This is a Bad Robot production, so J.J. Abrams will serve as an executive producer, along with Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, Bryan Burk, and Jerry Weintraub
The series has been described as a “dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.” Keep in mind that HBO has only committed to the pilot at this point, so the strength of that episode will determine if this gets a full series order.

Warner Bros. has announced that it will be releasing Westworld on Blu-ray next year. The 1973 sci-fi was directed and written by Michael Crichton, and starred Richard Benjamin, James Brolin, Alan Oppenheimer, Dick Van Patten, and Yul Brynner. At this time, all we know is that the Blu-ray will be available on March 5th, as no technical or bonus feature details have been announced.
You can take a look at the cover art below, and we’ve also included the synopsis and trailer for those that have not seen the movie:
“Welcome to West World, Crichton’s futuristic Disneyland for adults, a remote resort island where, for a hefty fee, you can indulge in your wildest fantasies in one of three convincing robot-run worlds: lusty Roman World, chivalrous Medieval World or lawless West World. It’s in West World that things run amok, though, as businessmen John Blane (Brolin) and Peter Martin...

The Smurfs have landed on the big-screen and the movie is a hit. While it will take awhile for the feature film to be offered on DVD, the original cartoon adventures are available already.
As you may recall, The Smurfs ran from 1981 until 1989 and were a cornerstone of NBC's Saturday morning line-up. Led by wise and gentle Papa Smurf, the cute little blue creatures did their best to live happily in the forest and to stay hidden from the outside world, particularly from evil wizard Gargamel and his nasty cat, Azrael. Some of the best vocal talent in the business provided the voices — actors like Don Messick, Lucille Bliss, Frank Welker, Danny Goldman, June Foray, Michael Bell, William Callaway, Hamilton Camp, Alan Oppenheimer, Alan Young, and Paul Winchell.

“Deep in the heart of the Amazon, the Butler family was exploring an uncharted river canyon. Suddenly, caught up in a violent whirlpool, they were propelled through an underground cavern and flung into a hostile world of giant prehistoric creatures; a world that time forgot. Now, befriended by a family of cave dwellers, each day is an adventure in survival in…the Valley of the Dinosaurs!”
Sound familiar? Would it surprise you to learn that Land of the Lost and Valley of the Dinosaurs both premiered on the same day? Weird how that happened, isn’t it? Anyways, the Butlers and their gracious cave dwelling hosts the Gorok’s (I know they never gave them a last name, but the male’s name is Gorok, and you have to figure it was a patriarchal society) spend each episode running from dinosaurs using a combination of the prehistoric families knowledge of...

As Age Of The Dragons arrives on DVD and Blu-ray, Duncan takes a look at the history of dragons in the movies…
It's no wonder so many of us have grown up geeky, for dragons have been a strong mainstay of children's movies for decades now. With their inextricable link to the fantasy genre, many of us have been brainwashed into a fixation with them before we even knew what was happening. Well, that's a decent enough excuse, anyway, should you ever find yourself needing one in a dragon-based argument, which I'm sure there aren't nearly enough of.
Pity the children growing up from the mid-nineties onwards, as they've barely been able to make it through one whole year without a dragon movie being released, a trend which sees no sign of slowing. This year has already seen the release of Age Of The Dragons, starring Danny Glover and Vinnie Jones...

As they travel to Camelot, brave Prince Valiant, feisty Rowanne, and woodsman Arn bond in their common desire to defeat practitioners of evil during their treacherous journey. The characters in the upcoming The Smurfs movie will be played by an all-star cast. We know that Jonathan Winters is voicing Papa Smurf, Katy Perry will provide the Smurfette's vocals, George Lopez will perform Grouchy, and Alan Cumming will voice an all-new character, Gutsy Smurf. Quentin Tarantino was in talks to play Brainy but that apparently won't be happening now.
A few characters will be live and not cartoon, similar to the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. Hank Azaria will play a live Gargamel, Neil Patrick Harris will appear as Johan, an expectant father, and Jayma Mays will play his pregnant wife.
But, what about the original cartoon voices? Some of the best talent in the business provided the voices -- names like Don Messick, Lucille Bliss, Frank Welker, Danny Goldman, June Foray, Michael Bell, William Callaway, Hamilton Camp, Alan Oppenheimer, Alan Young, and...

After languishing in development for many years, it looks like The Smurfs movie is finally being made.
If you're a child of the 1980s, you remember that The Smurfs TV show ran on NBC for an amazing eight seasons. The series follows the small blue creatures as they try to live in harmony and keep the location of their village a secret from evil wizard Gargamel and his nasty feline, Azrael.
The cast is a veritable who's-who of voice talent with actors like Don Messick, Lucille Bliss, Frank Welker, Danny Goldman, June Foray, Michael Bell, William Callaway, Hamilton Camp, Alan Oppenheimer, Alan Young, and Paul Winchell.
A live-action/CGI feature film of The Smurfs has been in the works for nearly a decade. In 2008, Columbia Pictures acquired the film rights and partnered with Sony Pictures Animation. In July 2009, Raja...

Directed by Shane Acker Screenplay by Pamela Pettler from a story by Acker Produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov Starring Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer, Martin Landau, Crispin Glover, and Alan Oppenheimer Before Wall-e was released in the summer of 2008, few thought its successful run would be a watershed moment for the science fiction genre. But it proved that a computer-animated family film featuring a cute robot could contain serious (and seriously out-there) sci-fi concepts and still work --to the tune of $225 million -- for mainstream audiences. If you're a sci-fi fan who liked Wall-e for its genre ...

Is it too late for "9" to be the action movie of the summer? Shane Acker's dystopian fable shares a subject with the latest entries in the "Terminator" and "Transformers" franchises (not to mention "Battlestar Galactica"), but his direction is a model of clarity and grace, and his animated, inhuman protagonists are more life-like and individuated than those of the average blockbuster.
Acker's feature, an expansion of his Oscar-nominated short, is set in a sandblasted future littered with desiccated bodies and shattered buildings. There are no humans -- the last dies just before the film begins -- but life, of a sort, still stirs amidst the rubble in the form of nine tiny figures, each with single digit etched into its back. With their burlap bodies and zippered torsos, they're like toys from the pre-industrial era, part mechanical and part organic. Although they're all the product of the same hand,...

I was loving 9 at first. Then it ended before the story even began.
It starts out promising. Newly woken stitchpunk #9 (Elijah Wood)—or so the director has named these rag doll robots—enters the world as Cillian Murphy in 28 Days Later: confused, lost, looking for answers in an abandoned city, not realizing the danger he’s in. Around him is a regular-sized world—a giant’s world to #9—filled with predatory robots made of junk scraps, forcing #9 and his kind to use ordinary household items and stationery as weapons and tools.
Mind you, this fantasy world is not a magical place. In fact, it’s quite horrifying. Acker gives us a doomsday future; a machine-dominated scorched version of our Earth in which the human race had already been wiped out. It gets dark fast. Shortly after his awakening, #9 spots his creator (Alan Oppenheimer) lying dead on the floor. He ventures outside,...
