Trending Israeli-made drama series “Unchained” has been picked up for exclusive distribution in Australia by state-backed cultural platform Special Broadcasting Service (Sbs).
The series delves into the clash between religious tradition and the modern world, in particular the area of divorce. Many Orthodox Jewish women experience difficulties when they are denied a Jewish divorce by their estranged husbands.
The show stars Aviv Alush (“Beauty And The Baker”) as a rabbi tasked with acting as both detective and psychologist for women whose husbands either refuse to divorce them or have disappeared. The rabbi will go to any lengths to get justice and free the women from the prison of an unwanted relationship. However, his world begins to crumble when he realizes that his own wife is going through a crisis of faith, and feels trapped by the strict rules of Jewish orthodoxy.

Lab ran outside of the Jerusalem Film Festival this year.
The 2018 Sam Spiegel International Film Lab, which this year ran outside of the Jerusalem Film Festival due to the latter’s shift in dates, presented its top prize to Turkish director Emre Kayis and producer Olena Yershova for their project Anatolian Leopard.
The feature is set in the oldest zoo in Turkey, which in the film is undergoing privatisation with one obstacle remaining– an endangered Anatolian leopard. When the zookeeper finds the animal dead, he is determined to keep the news secret and tells the police it has escaped from its cage.

Even though 2010 wasn't considered a good year in Israeli cinema, as its presence on the international front was rather modest, it certainly wasn't as bad that one might think, and by comparison, 2011 is looking at least as good, if not better: There are already two Israeli films that will be launched at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival, and just before that, Sundance's World Dramatic Competition will include a title that I mention below. 2011 will mark the return of a few veterans, and (hopefully) the rise of a few new star filmmakers. Here are the 5 most anticipated projects on the Israeli side of the film world...: #.5 The Slut – Hagar Ben Asher This project is supposed to satisfy the thirst of people who prefer the more "arty" cinema. Ben Asher has been working on this since 2007, when her short film Pathways won awards in Cannes. This is supposed to be a...

The Sundance Film Festival announced their line-up last week and since I'm the site's Israeli-based film reporter, I'll be putting the emphasis the one homegrown film that managed to crack the festival's line-up (short film announcements are being made next week so that status might change). The World Cinema Dramatic Competition line-up will include the Israeli film entitled Restoration (the original Israeli title translates as Good Morning Mr. Fidelman). The film is directed by Yossi Madmoni who's been co-directing with David Ofek for several years on feature films and TV series. "Restoration" is his first solo flight. The movie stars Sasson Gabai (The Band's Visit) as an aging furniture restorator fighting his own lawyer son who wishes to sell his father's business for financial profit while the apprentice (Henri David) gets romantically involved with the pregnant restorator's son's wife (Sara Adler). On the surface this project looks humble and dramatically strong,...
