Directed by Michael Oblowitz, Confidential Informant is part buddy cop drama and part crime thriller that works fine despite its superficial narrative. Having a cast that includes the likes of Mel Gibson doesn’t hurt, and the film manages to keep the viewers engaged in patches, if not throughout its entire runtime. The plot of Confidential Informant revolves around two war veterans, Tom Moran and Mike Thornton, who, after their stint in the Gulf War, come to work in the narcotics department of the NYPD. Their leader is the experienced Kevin Hickey, who knows what it’s like to return to civilian life after the war. After Tom discovers he has cancer and his time is limited, he asks his partner Mike to help him with a deadly plan that will help his family survive after he is gone.

Confidential Informant opens with a voiceover telling us what wonderful people cops are, especially those with combat experience. Case in point Tom Moran and Mike Thorton. We get to see them raid a crack operation and then lie to their superior over little things like not having a search warrant. Wonderful people indeed.
While tossing a baseball around with his son Moran collapses in pain. His wife Anna tells him he needs to see a doctor. He’s seen a doctor, three of them in fact, and they all tell him he has stomach cancer and not too long to live. Coincidentally enough another cop, Frank, was talking at the bar about how much money the department pays out to your family if...

Durban — “The Reports on Sarah and Saleem,” directed by Muayad Alayan, scooped best picture at the 39th Durban Intl. Film Festival, which wrapped Saturday night with an award ceremony at the Suncoast Cine Center complex.
The film tells the story of the political ramifications of an extra-marital affair between a Palestinian man and an Israeli woman. Variety described it as a “taut psychosocial drama.”
In a pre-recorded message from Jerusalem, Alayan offered thanks to the audience in South Africa – a country, he said, “which we as Palestinians hold in a very special place in our hearts” – while dedicating the award to “all the filmmakers out there in this world who are fighting all forms of injustice with their films and their art.”
The award punctuated a Diff whose 2018 edition “had a very special focus on hearing and seeing the marginal voices, with a focus on celebrating diversity,” according to Lliane Loots,...

Durban — Forty-two years after leaving apartheid South Africa, Cape Town-born helmer and indie film pioneer Michael Oblowitz had a single question for the crowd gathered Sunday night for the opening of the Wavescape Surf Film Festival in Durban: “How’s the surf?”
On a chilly, blustery night, with waves crashing along the Bay of Plenty on the palm-lined stretch of Durban waterfront dubbed the Golden Mile, close to 1,000 movie-goers turned out to unfurl picnic blankets, bundle into their ski parkas, and sip South African pinotage during the African premiere of Oblowitz’s acclaimed surf documentary, “Heavy Water: The Life and Times of Nathan Fletcher.”
The California transplant, who learned the ropes of filmmaking alongside the likes of Jim Jarmusch and Kathryn Bigelow in the gritty, indie New York scene of the 1970s, was a fitting choice to open Wavescape’s 14th edition, running parallel to the Durban Int’l. Film Festival.

While always a city bursting with creative and artistic talent, there was probably no time more fertile in New York City than than '70s and '80s. Avant-garde art, hip hop, punk, no-wave, disco and more all clashed and mingled, leaving a lasting impression on pop culture, politics and the city itself. Among that noise and ruckus, independent filmmakers were also making a big wave, capturing New York's vibrancy in stories that inspired a new generation of directors. And that time has been captured in the documentary "Blank City."
Directed by Celine Danhier, the film explores the artists of the "No Wave Cinema" and "Cinema of Transgression" movements who shattered existing notions of Diy and underground art, and paved the way for today's independent film scene. Through interviews with Steve Buscemi, Debbie Harry, Jim Jarmusch, Fab 5 Freddy and John Waters and many more, the film presents a revealing...

[1] It seems like Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines gets more intriguing with each new casting announcement, and the latest addition is no exception. Ray Liotta has just signed on for Cianfrance's “Deer Hunter meets The Godfather” crime drama, joining Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Greta Gerwig and Ben Mendelsohn. Liotta will be playing a corrupt police officer. The Place Beyond the Pines centers around a pro motorcycle rider-turned-bank robber (Gosling) and a cop (Cooper) who cross paths, setting off a multi-generational feud. Mendes will be Gosling's love interest, while Gerwig is considering the role of Cooper's wife. Mendelsohn is in negotiations [2] to play a mechanic who brings Gosling's charcter into the world of bank robbery. Shooting for the film is set to begin late next month in Schenectady, NY. [Variety [3]] After the jump, Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth picks a new project, while Rumer Willis and Dominic Purcell get spooked.

Adapted by screenwriter Larry Gross from a posthumously published Jim Thompson story and directed by newcomer Michael Oblowitz, "This World, Then the Fireworks" is so intent on being the latest word in luridness that it implodes because of its stylistic overkill and unsatisfyingly arch storytelling.
Starring Billy Zane and Gina Gershon as psychotic grifters gleefully breaking every moral and legal law in the books, the Orion Classics/Largo Entertainment release is woefully ill-conceived except as a curio for incurable hipsters after a thrill and renters of cult-wannabe videos.
A talented cast and period production dressed-up in pulp-fiction colors and noir atmosphere are wasted in a teasingly sinful 1950s scenario that flips along with the depth and satisfaction of a montage of paperback covers with such titles as "Killer Twins in Love With Each Other" and "Girl Cops Who Like to Be Raped".
Zane's droll reading of the central male character, Marty, a cool-cat murderer and scam artist with a metaphysical rap, sets the tone of superficial charm hiding dreadful urges and naughty secrets. Likewise chilly and conniving, curly-haired Gershon plays his twin sister Carol, a prostitute trying to rebound from a bad marriage.
Witnesses to a bloody incident as children, in which their father killed a jealous husband, Marty and Carol are so close they've become lovers. Or so we are led to believe. The filmmakers apparently thought it too shocking to actually show them in the throes of passion.
Alas, the "Fireworks" are more verbal than visceral. Other characters suspect the leads have a nasty habit, and their shrill mother (Rue McClanahan) is always accusing them of incestuous behavior.
Marty and Carol's shared amusement at the pain and tragedy they cause when unsuspecting marks cross their paths obviously has its limit, but the audience also has to endure his sadistic relationship with a policewoman (Sheryl Lee) -- the proverbial wounded innocent drawn to her psychological doom.
All about murky interior pleasures that are powerful facets of Thompson's writing, the film's subplots are mere clutter. There's nary a sympathetic character, and one is "shocked" into numbness by the lack of purpose to the whole sorry cinematic muddle.
