For the legions of Batman fans in the world, "Batman: The Animated Series" is the unimpeachable screen adaptation of the character created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. The show found this unique blend of darkness, humor, and sophistication that could satisfy the intended audience of children, as well as all the adult fans who tuned in. This was also many people's gateway into the world of Batman, Robin, and Gotham, including mine, and our perception of these characters was entirely shaped by watching this show as it aired or the reruns that would show constantly.
What made the show stand out even more among its kid cartoon peers was how it looked. No other show was utilizing the color black or shadows in the way "Batman: The Animated Series" did. The aesthetic of the piece was just as important as the content within the show. When I think of many of the characters,...

Some say a hero is only as good as his villain and Batman has the best Rogues Gallery in DC Comics. Bringing all these Big Bads into a new medium for "Batman: The Animated Series" -- which still holds up for many as the definitive take on the Caped Crusader -- wasn't easy. Kevin Conroy's Batman (who will be sorely missed) was the beating heart of "Batman: The Animated Series," with the actor not only expertly portraying the Dark Knight, but Bruce Wayne as well. Our hero faced plenty of unforgettable villains throughout the course of the series, including Man-Bat, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and of course, Mark Hamill's Joker.
Some characters may look like their comic counterparts, but many were completely redesigned for the cartoon. One that was something of a challenge was Killer Croc. Introduced in 1983 in "Detective Comics" #523, this Batman foe was created by Gerry Conway,...

"Werewolf By Night" has arrived on Disney+ just in time for the spooky season and luckily, it rules/ The Marvel special stars Gael Garcia Bernal as Jack Russell, a man who transforms into the titular beast under the light of the full moon. Other notable Marvel characters appearing in the special are Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) and Ted Sallis (Carey Jones), aka Man-Thing — who looks amazing by the way. The special is a bold swing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something that has felt increasingly rare as of late, and director/composer Michael Giacchino has brought this formerly unexplored corner of Marvel Comics to brilliant life.

I had the recent fortune of some puzzle pieces all falling into place at the same time. It only resulted in me selling one comic but I think the turn of events involved was worth documenting. It all started the morning after the Superbowl. I had the day off as it was my birthday and I awoke to see the words Doctor Strange, Illuminati and Professor Xavier all trending online! Of course, the first thing I did was to watch the new trailer and like a lot of people I was blown away. I am really looking forward to this movie. It’s amazing to think how they are still trying and succeeding at keeping things fresh and exciting after Endgame. I slept on Spider-Man No Way Home and just never got around to seeing it. I enjoyed the first Doctor Strange movie and am looking forward...

I know every comic book publisher loves a ‘special’ issue, an ‘anniversary’ issue, or a ‘reached a big number’ issue, but at first glance a 144 page monster book for issue 1027 of Detective Comics seems a bit of a stretch. Longevity, sure, but we just had a whole raft of anniversary specials did we not? Then you realise. Detective Comics #27, back in 1939, was not only the very first appearance of Batman, but became the title that led to National Periodicals eventually becoming DC Comics. They liked the series so much they named a company after it. So, in comic book terms, Detective Comics #27 is probably the second most important published, beaten out only by Action Comics #1. This was impossible to not pick up. Firstly, well, it’s Batman, currently going through something of a renaissance, with some good books being put out. I imagine with DC Comics now being fully operated and controlled by their corporate owners, they are under orders to really push their blue chip characters, for commercial and marketing reasons as much as good stories, but good stories is what we have been treated to. Secondly, just look at that creative team. Warren Ellis scripting, Bryan Hitch pencilling, Kevin Nowlan inking, Alex Sinclair on colours, and Richard Starkings on lettering duties. You won’t find a more elite creative team on any book, anywhere. Finally, that title. The Batman’s Grave. How could that not draw you in? Take. My. Money.
Right, now you have my money, this book...

The new Batman book from Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch is a different look at the world of the Dark Knight.
This is not the first time we’ve talked about The Batman’s Grave, the new 12-issue maxiseries from comics legends Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch. It won’t be the last time, either. It was almost certainly going to get a tryout, just on the strength of the creators - you get The Authority creative team back together and there’s no way I was going to let it sneak by. But now, based on the strength of these preview pages, I’m pretty locked in for the full run.
The last preview we got was limited to black and white pencils and inks from Hitch and longtime collaborator Kevin Nowlan. They were good, but the new color pages tell so much more of the story.

The Authority creators reunite for a 12-issue Batman series.
Bryan Hitch and Warren Ellis are the comic book titans who created The Authority and unleashed them on the world, changing comics for twenty years. Now, the pair are reuniting for the first time since that superhero epic this October for The Batman's Grave, a 12-issue maxi-series written by Ellis, with art from Hitch and his Hawkman inker, Kevin Nowlan.
“I’ve drawn some covers and used Batman in Justice League and Jla, but since I read Jim Aparo and Don Newton’s Batman runs in the 80’s, I’ve wanted to do a proper, big Batman story. Fellow Authoritarian Warren Ellis had one to tell, so when he mentioned it I said ‘yes’ before even asking what it was about," said Hitch in a press release. "That’s what you do when Warren says ‘I’ve got a proper,...

In case you didn't know, this week marks the 25th Anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series! I can't believe that it's been that long since this amazing series aired. It's considered by many to be one of the best-animated series of all time, which I won't argue with because it is.
Today we have some really cool early character design work to show you that has surfaced online that was created by artist Kevin Nowlan. He was brought in early in the development process to help craft the look of the series. He worked alongside Bruce Timm, Eric Radomski, and the rest of the team. Looking at this art, it's not hard to see the influence that he had on the series.
The character designs here include Batman, Man-Bat, Joker, Penguin, Killer Croc, Robin, Catwoman, Ridler, Ra's al Ghul, Talia, and Commissioner Gordon. The art comes from 13th Dimension and they interviewed the artist.

It’s getting to be that time of the month when DC starts rolling out solicits for comic books due to ship three months from now. As such, we’ve been given insight into upcoming issues of Trinity, Hal Joran and the Green Lantern Corps and Aquaman, two of which will begin new story arcs.
First, let’s take a look at Trinity, which looks to offer a nice alternative for those who may or may not be digging what’s going on over in the Justice League books. Normally, the focused is placed squarely on DC’s biggest guns – Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman – but it seems the rest of their Jl cohorts will be joining them for the “All Along The Watchtower” arc. Francis Manapul has never been one to steer readers in the wrong direction,...

Variant covers are something of a tradition in American comics--usually superhero comics. While I generally abhor the tradition for two reasons (one, the covers never represent the actual content in the books, and two, I hate that it preys on the completionist's Ocd), even I have to admit that they tend to get some quality cover designs out of it, and if this first series of covers is any indication, this will be no exception.
In celebration (and promotion) of the upcoming Batman v Superman, DC will be producing three variant covers for ten issues of comics. The first issue to get this treatment will be Detective Comics #50, with the cover being done by Rafael Grampa.
You can check out these covers below!
