A recent example is his Oscar-winning film, Oppenheimer, through which Nolan not only impressed but left everyone shocked with how far the bounds of storytelling and filmmaking can be pushed. And so to imagine Nolan directing a horror flick is no less than a dream come true for any fan of the genre. After the director himself expressed his interest in the niche, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson has the perfect movie waiting for Nolan to make.

There's no one way to play Batman. With "Batman Returns," star Michael Keaton cut more than half his lines, making for a broody, mysterious Dark Knight that fit perfectly among the more outlandish freaks that populated Tim Burton and production designer Bo Welch's nightmare fairytale landscape. For his Dark Knight trilogy, however, Christopher Nolan wasn't afraid to let Christian Bale's Batman bellow multiple lines using his now-famous guttural growl.
Both approaches worked, but there's no doubt Nolan's trilogy presented a much more quotable Dark Knight. Several of Bale's most striking Batman lines have now been solidified in pop culture history, with perhaps his infamously overwrought "Swear to me!" from "Batman Begins" being the most salient example. But Bale's Batman wasn't the only part of Nolan's trilogy that proved infinitely quotable. The director's scripts were a treasure trove of meme-able lines, many of which found their way into mass culture almost immediately.

A kind word from Christopher Nolan meant everything to David Krumholtz circa 2007 and beyond. It’s a story that sounds a lot like Bruce Wayne’s final admission to Commissioner Gordon in Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, as you never know just how impactful a random act of kindness can be for someone else. Roughly 17 years ago, the now Oscar-winning filmmaker was scouting for The Dark Knight at Los Angeles Center Studios, and Krumholtz happened to be there, shooting Numbers. That’s when Nolan approached the actor and paid him an unexpected compliment regarding his performance as mathematical genius Charlie Eppes on the hit CBS show.
From there, Krumholtz couldn’t help but hold out hope that Nolan would cast him someday, and the opportunity finally came in the form of Oppenheimer’s Isidor Isaac Rabi, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and endearingly loyal friend to J. Robert “Oppie” Oppenheimer...

Superhero movies occupy quite a lot of cinema space in today’s landscape. With the rise of giant superhero brands, Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe, recent movie history has witnessed a great deal of shift and changes. While some filmmakers have shown their concern for the genre engulfing others including indie films, some have questioned its sustainability which includes Steven Spielberg.

Christopher Nolan can hear the music: Oppenheimer had a huge night at the 2024 Oscars, earning seven awards at the ceremony in Hollywood – including Best Picture, Directing for filmmaker Christopher Nolan, Actor In A Leading Role for Cillian Murphy, and Actor In A Supporting Role for Robert Downey Jr. It marks Nolan’s first Oscar win, for a three-hour bomb-based biopic that swept multiplexes through last summer.
Speaking on stage for his Directing win, Nolan noted how young an artform cinema remains, with so much potential for the future. “Movies are just over 100 years old. Imagine being 100 years into painting,” he said. “We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here.” He also hailed Emma Thomas, “producer of all our films, and all our children. As Oscar night presses forward, it looks increasingly likely that the 96th Academy Awards will forever be remembered as the year of the “Oppenheimer” sweep. And while the night’s biggest prize has yet to be announced, Christopher Nolan’s biographical film about Atomic Bomb inventor J. Robert Oppenheimer just notched a win that could rival a potential Best Picture victory in terms of importance. Cillian Murphy has won the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, putting a capstone on his decades-spanning collaboration with Christopher Nolan and receiving a final piece of validation for his role in 2023’s unlikeliest summer blockbuster.

Updated with win for score. Ludwig Goransson won Oppenheimer‘s fourth Oscar of the night for Best Original Score.
The two-time Oscar winner (the first was for Black Panther) acknowledged director Christopher Nolan in his acceptance speech. “It was your idea to have a violin in the score,” he said. “That allowed me to work and collaborate with my wonderful wife and acclaimed violinist, Serena Goransson.” The two recorded at night, he recalled. “The result of that was amazing and it really set a nice tone for the project.”
Original Score was one category presumed to be one of Oppenheimer’s field-leading 13 nominations to end up in the win column, given that Goransson’s award season run had already been headlined by Grammy and BAFTA honors.

As “Oppenheimer” begins its expected steamroll” of many of the biggest categories at the 96th Academy Awards, Robert Downey Jr. has added yet another storybook ending to one of the greatest comebacks in modern Hollywood history. Downey has won the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in “Oppenheimer,” beating out stiff competition including Robert De Niro for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Mark Ruffalo in “Poor Things,” Sterling K. Brown in “American Fiction,” and his Barbenheimer counterpart Ryan Gosling for “Barbie.”
This marks Downey’s first Oscar win on his third nomination. He earned rave reviews in 1992 for playing Charlie Chaplin in Richard Attenborough’s “Chaplin,” which saw him portraying the silent film icon from his impoverished youth to his later years as a global superstar. That performance earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

It's that time again. The Oscars are Sunday night so it's time to make those final calls. Oppenheimer is poised to win big but How big exactly? Clean sweeps have gone out of fashion in the past 25 years. The only "clean sweep" this century -- aka a movie nominated for a lot of Oscars that won All of them on Hollywood's High Holy night -- was 2003's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Even more interesting than Hollywood's turn away from sweeps is that it's become common the Best Picture winner to Not win the most Oscars. Steven Spielberg is one of the wisest men in Hollywood and is known to give all kinds of advice to his peers, whether they are part of his films or not. After all, there is no one who wouldn’t want to get advice from someone who has such a wealth of knowledge. However, John Carpenter has one notable Steven Spielberg movie, which he claimed was pretentious.

Denis Villeneuve is currently the man of the hour. He’s got one of the most anticipated films of the year premiering this week with an overwhelmingly positive early response. Dune: Part Two is already getting praised for its immensely breathtaking visuals (which are heightened by the large screen theater formats) and the grand journey of Timothée Chalamet’s noble heir. Our own Chris Bumbray got to speak with the maestro at the Montreal premiere. Additionally, Dune: Part Two is already on track for a big opening weekend as its early preview totals from Thursday exceed the first film’s early preview numbers with double the sales.
Dune: Part Two is not Villeneuve’s first sequel. However, it is a sequel to a franchise in which he was placed in charge. Villeneuve spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about his feelings on taking on a franchise established by another director when...

When “Dune: Part One” wrapped, composer Hans Zimmer continued to write more music for the sci-fi epic. He was told to stop, but Zimmer insisted he would carry on, so much so that director Denis Villeneuve would joke that the composer was locked in the studio.
Except it wasn’t completely a joke. Like many, Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel was hugely influential to Zimmer growing up. He never watched David Lynch’s 1984 film adaptation, but rather “made this movie in my head,” Zimmer notes.
So, when Villeneuve approached him to score “Dune: Part One,” Zimmer was more than excited to hop on board, saying that “the first movie is really a preamble.”
Zimmer told Villeneuve, “I’m writing because I know that we will be greenlit for ‘Part Two.’ And secondly, I think it’d be good for me to carry on writing and maybe inspire you with some things.

When it comes to exploring a vast array of genres and gaining unprecedented mastery in all of them, there is no one who can quite surpass Christopher Nolan. From sci-fi thrillers, psychological dramas, superhero narratives, to sweeping biopics, Nolan’s grip over the various crafts of cinema makes him one of Hollywood’s most prolific directors.

Denis Villeneuve’s live-action adaptations of Dune have been absolute delights to the die-hard Dune fans. If anything, fans just can’t believe how much of an immaculate casting both films from Villeneuve’s saga have. This includes Rebecca Ferguson playing the mother of Timothée Chalamet in the films, even though the actress is mostly seen in leading roles and hardly in ‘mother’ roles.
The flawless Dune cast
However, as perfect a performance as Ferguson may have given so far in the saga as Lady Jessica, Paul Atreides’ mother, the actress still has one complaint about her role. And this complaint is induced by none other than the Hollywood heartthrob and her onscreen son, Timothée Chalamet.

Movies are subjective creations, with their quality perceived differently by each viewer. However, recent trends in cinema, particularly highlighted by the release of Oppenheimer shed light on certain factors influencing audience reception.
Dune Director Denis Villeneuve has discussed the evolving preferences of moviegoers, pointing to factors beyond just storyline and visuals.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer
In the wake of the box office disappointment of films like The Marvels, Villeneuve drew attention to a shift in audience attitudes towards movie runtime. No longer solely focused on narrative and spectacle, audiences are increasingly mindful of the duration of a film.
Villeneuve juxtaposed the underperformance of The Marvels with the success of Christopher Nolan’s project, Oppenheimer, to illustrate this point.

Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel Dune Part Two has entered the history books, earning a 9.4 average rating on IMDb, the highest score ever recorded on the popular review site. With this astronomical rating, Dune: Part Two has surpassed previous record-holders like Avengers: Endgame (8.4) and Avatar (7.8) to take the coveted number 1 spot.

Despite this film not being a superhero film by either Marvel Studios or DC Studios, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was arguably one of, if not the biggest hit in the film industry last year, surpassing expectations on both the critical and commercial scale. This was on top of the fact that it was an astonishingly long film with a run time of three hours in today’s trend of short-form content.

Few directors are as admired and esteemed in the entertainment industry as Werner Herzog and Martin Scorsese. These two titans of the industry have become household names thanks to their distinct styles and uncompromising visions. However, it appears that Herzog is not afraid to challenge even his fellow cinematic legends on the subject of comic book movies.
In a recent interview, Herzog—the pioneer of New German Cinema—made waves by saying that he completely agrees with Scorsese’s dismay at the dominance of superhero flicks. However, the director-author, 81, also maintained that these movies aren’t simply entertainment. They are a reflection of our society and culture, and should not be so easily dismissed by those who believe themselves to be above such populist fare.

The actor finally got a lead role in Nolan’s movies after having collaborated with the famed director for five movies. He has been vocal about how he got the script and how much mutual love and respect they share. But there is one movie he was more excited to do earlier, and it’s not any Nolan film.

Peter Bart: In A Buzz-Less Market, Smart New Movies Must Overcome Critics’ Disdain & Audience Torpor
“Uninspired.” “Never catches fire.” “Non-memorable.”
I was sifting through reviews last weekend as the first step in my mission to re-discover the habit of moviegoing. With Barbenheimer finally behind us, I decided to see three new movies on successive days – yes, buying tickets and going to theaters.
But first come the critics: Their reviews, I assumed, would be tepid (excerpts above.) Box office results over the Presidents Day weekend were the lowest in 23 years, down 17% from a year ago — not a good portent. If there are some promising new movies out there, why are they hitting the wall?
Here’s a clue: Remember wide openings and buzz? Well, welcome to the new age of nonbuzz – new releases are greeted by the sounds of silence.
I decided to be resolute, anyway. I’m buying tickets.
Spoiler alert: I thoroughly enjoyed my filmgoing adventure. But there seems to be a...

Visual effects teams served up astonishing images of animated characters, monsters, and the ex-
plosions that we’ve all come to expect and love over the last year. And this time, as the Visual Effects Society’s nominations for its annual awards show, VFX artists are leaning more and more into the kinds of tools and techniques that speed up production, give filmmakers real time choices, and create stylized versions of effects.
Chris Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which was lauded for its astonishing and convincing VFX, relied on teams using cutting edge tools to immerse audiences in the story. The film also leaned into some classic special effects designed to be paired with VFX to make an overall more impressive image.
“Chris wants to do as much in camera as he can because he knows this will make everything look better,” says Scott Fisher, special effects supervisor, nommed for his work on the film.

The keys to the Disney Vault are being handed over to Sony (at least when it comes to DVDs, Blu-ray discs and other physical media).
It’s been a busy few months for the DVD business, with Netflix announcing its intention to exit the DVD-by-mail business and Best Buy saying that it would stop selling DVDs and Blu-ray discs in-store.
Now, Disney has decided to exit the physical media space as well, switching to a licensed model via an agreement with Sony Entertainment. The deal will see Sony market, sell and distribute new releases and library titles from Disney.
A Disney source notes that the company regularly evaluates its go-to-market approach, and that rapidly evolving changes in consumer behavior and media consumption spurred on the change.
Disney joins Warner Bros. Discovery and Universal in deciding that sharing resources is a better path forward for a physical media business in decline.
