Despite a Broadway season that saw a 6-percent dip in attendance, theater fans still have cause for celebration at this Sunday’s Tony Awards. There’s a contest heating up for Best Musical, pitting the “revolting” children of Matilda against the fabulous drag queens of Kinky Boots.
And there’s some real suspense in other major categories: Will two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks (above) add a Tony to his mantel for his Broadway debut in Lucky Guy? Will former Who’s the Boss star Judith Light win back-to-back Tonys in Best Featured Actress in a Play? EW critics Melissa Rose...

New York — The Cyndi Lauper-scored "Kinky Boots" has earned a leading 13 Tony Award nominations, with the British import "Matilda: The Musical" close behind with 12. Tom Hanks, making his Broadway debut, earned a nod as leading man in a play.
"Kinky Boots" is based on the 2005 British movie about a real-life shoe factory that struggles until it finds new life in fetish footwear. Lauper's songs and a story by Harvey Fierstein have made it a crowd-pleaser.
"I walked my dog early this morning so I'd be back in time to listen to the announcement. It's so great. It's so great. I'm done crying a little bit. But I'm still thrilled and a little stunned," Lauper said.
The haul did not match the record number of nominations for a musical, which is 15, set by "The Producers" in 2001 and "Billy Elliot" in 2009. "The Book of Mormon" nabbed 14 Tony nods in 2011.

The 2013 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning by actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and five-time nominated Broadway regular Sutton Foster.
The musical "Kinky Boots" nabbed the most nominations with a total of 13 Tony nods, making the fetish footwear-themed production this year's leading favorite. Its chief rival -- the kid-friendly "Matilda" -- followed close behind with a respectable 12. In the play category, the "Golden Boy" revival secured the highest number of mentions with a total of eight nominations, while Nora Ephron's "Lucky Guy" starring Tom Hanks earned six.
Big names in the acting nominations department included Hanks, Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf and Cicely Tyson. Notably missing were Bette Midler, Jessica Chastain, Scarlett Johansson and Alec Baldwin, just a handful of celebrities who graced the Broadway stage this season but were snubbed when it came to the Tony announcements.

Lech Majewski has just presented his new film, The Mill and the Cross, at the Sundance, Rotterdam and Göteborg film festivals and at the Louvre in Paris, and we'll get to the first round of critical reaction in a moment. First, though, we're proud and pleased to announce that we're presenting a retrospective of Films by Lech Majewski. Before taking a quick look at each of them, we should note right off that these films are viewable everywhere in the world except the United States, Canada and Poland.
Let's start with the film we're presenting for free: "The Handycam has produced its first masterpiece," Tim Lucas announced in Sight & Sound back in 2008. "Shot entirely on a single Sony PD100 camera, held at different times by the director or one of its two principals, The Garden of Earthly Delights [2004] is a kind of triptych, much like the 1503 Hieronymous Bosch painting (subtitled...

Who is Lech Majewski? Among other things, he's something of a newfound challenge for the critic and budding cinephile. A tireless and passionate Euro artiste of a kind that gets often relegated to the "underground" or "experimental" categories in this country, but who also employs old-fashioned surrealism and sometimes nets name actors like Viggo Mortensen (pre-"Lotr"), Majewski does everything on his films but make the coffee, and thus they are his works, uncorrupted by business and audience. Which may be the trouble . based upon the set of features released by Kino, Majewski may be one of the most pretentious filmmakers alive and working. Or is he a visionary? What separates the two quantities, except taste and argument? When does Majewski's brand of rampaging, overtly symbolic experimentalism dip below the line of transformative art and into nonsense? "Gospel According to Harry" (1994) attacks modern society's materialistic failures at...
