His production of
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Idomeneo" at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin,
which premiered in 2003, attracted the international media's attention
because the opera's director canceled some performances in September
2006 due to security risks. After Neuenfels, other artists and
politicians protested against this act of self-censorship, the opera
house announced that the production would be presented in December 2006
again.
