This meticulous docu-drama is still the best show about the Titanic, the awesome disaster that has never lost its grip on the imagination. Roy Ward Baker leads an enormous cast of Brit character actors through 2.5 hours of true-life terror in the icy Atlantic — Kenneth More, Honor Blackman, David McCallum, Laurence Naismith, Anthony Bushell. No stupid subplots and no insulting anachronisms, just an awful sinking death trap and 1600 passengers facing the freezing water. [Imprint] brings some new extras to the mix, too.

Cinema Retro has received the following announcement:
Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none
Of all the countless action adventure TV shows that filled our screens in the 1960s, perhaps none of them have fascinated audiences quite as much as The Prisoner. In 1967, Patrick McGoohan stepped away from the colossal Itc hit show Secret Agent (or Danger Man in the UK) and used his commercial clout to create a series that has thrilled and baffled in equal measure for over fifty years.
He played a nameless secret agent who is kidnapped during the titles sequence of the first episode, and wakes up in a bizarre, pastel-hued location where everyone is known only by their number, and where escape is made impossible by a malevolent bouncing ball.
In ‘The Village’, the authorities are determined to discover why this new arrival resigned. However, No. 6 as he is now known, is equally determined...

One of the first ‘kitchen sink realist’ films of the British New Wave is also one of the best English films ever — believable, absorbing, and emotionally moving. The adaptation of John Braine’s novel launched Laurence Harvey as a major star, and English films were suddenly touted as being just as adult as their continental counterparts. It attracted a bushel of awards, especially for the luminous Simone Signoret. Unlike the average Angry Young Man, Joe Lampton’s struggle feels universal — bad things happen when ambition seeks a way through the class ceiling, ‘to get to the money,’ as says Donald Wolfit’s character.

Jordan Stephens and Derren Nesbitt in Tucked
In the first part of my recent interview with Jamie Patterson we talked about how he developed the ideas behind Tucked and set out to turn the story of an ageing drag queen with cancer into an uplifting tale of friendship and self-discovery. In part two we discuss his amazing cast, starting with Derren Nesbitt, who has never had a role like Jackie before.
“I used to date his step-daughter, who’s a wonderful make-up artist,” Jamie says, explaining how they know each other. “He was retired and he came out of retirement a few years ago to do a film I was working on called Home For Christmas. A lovely performance, but he was doing it was a favour for me. While he was on set I said ‘Actually, I’ve got this idea for this movie about this ageing drag queen who gets this bad news,...

Derren Nesbitt is terrific as an ageing club performer who rescues a young singer from homophobic attackers
An ageing drag queen gets a diagnosis of terminal cancer and makes a new friend in this touching, unexpectedly funny end-of-life drama set in Brighton, with a terrific performance by 83-year-old Derren Nesbitt. It must have taken real guts for him to let the camera in so close, following him naked into the shower and under the harsh lights.
Nesbitt plays Jack Collins, who initially looks like retired brickie. But, under a towering beehive wig, Jack becomes Jackie, the main attraction at a drag club, performing mildly offensive un-pc comedy routines that go down a storm with the millennial audience. Jack’s diagnosis comes after he collapses on stage. But the show must go on and, a few nights later, he rescues a young singer, Faith, from homophobic attackers.

Jamie Patterson at work
Derren Nesbitt stars as an ageing drag queen recently diagnosed with cancer who takes Jordan Stephens’ young non-binary performer under his wing in Jamie Patterson’s Tucked, a small film with a big heart which has secured a cinema release after charming audiences at festivals around the world. The now very much in-demand director kindly took time out to talk to me whilst in transit, hiding in a station concourse Paperchase so we could hear each other speak. I asked if he was excited about all the positive attention the film has received so far.
Tucked
“Yes!” he exclaims. “It’s been mad. It’s been one of those films. It was my tenth film as a writer/director and it just seemed to connect with an audience in a way that none of my other movies have. I don’t know what that is – if...

Sometimes films have the potential to deeply move audiences while watching them, and warm their hearts long after the credits have rolled. That’s certainly the case with the new drama, ‘Tucked,’ which emphasizes that people feel the most alive when they receive the painful news that they’re dying. That powerful message is showcased in the […]

"How long have I got?" Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for an award-winning indie drama titled Tucked, the first queer film from prolific young British director Jamie Patterson. This premiered at the Outfest Film Festival last year, where it won both the Narrative Audience Award and the International Narrative Feature Grand Jury Prize. Tucked is about an aging drag queen named Jackie Collins, who has been told he only has six weeks left to live. All he wants to do is perform his long-running act, and behave as if all is normal. But between a surprising new friendship with a rising young queen and unfinished business with his estranged daughter, he may just have the most eventful month and a half of his entire life. Starring Jordan Stephens, Derren Nesbitt, April Pearson, and Steve Oram. Worth a peek if you're curious. Here's the official trailer (+ two posters) for Jamie Patterson's Tucked,...

“Brace Yourself For A Shock!…200 Feet of Living Burning Horror!” Eugène Lourié’s second feature about an irate sea monster wrecking a city features sober eco-preaching, good performances by Gene Evans and André Morell, and several minutes of exciting stop-motion animation nirvana. One just needs to overlook a few lunkhead effects scenes and concentrate on the key Willis O’Brien / Pete Peterson material. It’s a Shock all right — do you prefer to be stepped on like a bug, or fried by a zillion volts of ‘projected radiation?’

Writer Derek Pykett (whose excellent book " MGM British Studios: Hollywood in Borehamwood" was reviewed here earlier this year) has turned his hand to directing; setting up and playing host to a dozen intimate interviews with some of Britain's most respected and beloved thesps, the results are now available on DVD with "From Stage to Screen", a privately produced, limited edition 6-disc box set.
With each performer given their own ‘episode’ and a total running time of 15 hours, there's so much material here that it'll take the average viewer a number of sittings to get through it all. Beyond starting with disc one and working through methodically, where one begins is probably going to be proportionate to the level of esteem in which the viewer holds each particular actor or actress represented within the set; I confess that at the time of writing I still have a fair bit to get through.

Here’s our first look at Ray Winstone’s next, The Hot Potato, a London based gangster yarn featuring Colm Meaney, Jack Huston,David Harewood Phil Davis, Derren Nesbitt, Lois Winstone, Maike Billitis, and Jean Louis Sbille.
So far we’ve seen some nice artwork for the film and the presence of Ray Winstone pretty much guarantees we’ll be on board for this one. The film is shooting now in Belgium and the UK under the direction of Tim Lewiston who also wrote the film.
Before the main course, perhaps you would care for a synopsis as an entrée?

Mark celebrates one of his favourite movies. It's the union of Clint Eastwood, Richard Burton and Ingrid Pitt in Where Eagles Dare...
This movie holds a very special place in my heart, because, when I first saw it, it was the first film I was taken to that was intended for adults and not kids. I remember my father explaining before we went that there might be some scenes of violence, which only served to heighten my already considerable expectations. For my part, I promised not to have nightmares or try to join the SS afterwards.
The lights went down, the curtains withdrew and that classic day for night shot of the Junkers Ju 52 over the Alps came into view, and those iconic drums began to that repetitive beat. Instantly I was transported to WWII. The crisp cold winter air caused me a sharp intake of breath and, armed to the teeth,...

The UK’s longest-running genre event, the Festival of Fantastic Films, has added director Peter Sasdy to the guest lineup of its 2009 edition, running Friday-Sunday, October 16-18 in Manchester, England. Best known for his work with Hammer Films, Sasdy’s association with the iconic company stretches all the way from the 1969 TV anthology Journey To The Unknown to the company’s 1986 swansong, Hammer House Of Mystery And Suspense, also encompassing the features Taste The Blood Of Dracula, Countess Dracula and Hands Of The Ripper.
Other Hammer veterans speaking and socializing at the weekend-long event include Twins Of Evil director John Hough and actors John Carson (from Plague Of The Zombies) and Scars Of Dracula’s Jenny Hanley. But there’s more to the British genre scene than Hammer; among the other actors attending are Burke And Hare’s Derren Nesbitt, The Ghoul (and Zombie) star Ian McCulloch and Evil Aliens’ Emily Booth.
