Clooney wrote, directed and starred in the 2005 historical drama about Murrow’s coverage of Senator Joseph McCarthey’s anti-communist tribunals in the 1950s. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

George Clooney and Amal Clooney, in their roles as co-founders of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, spoke about their work “waging justice” at the Skoll World Forum in Oxford, England on Friday.
“It’s nice to be in a room with people that get shit done,” the Hollywood star said early on during the appearance.
The Clooney Foundation for Justice, whose mission is to provide free legal support and advocacy to victims of genocide, unlawful imprisonment, and other human rights abuses, started 2024 with a new executive leadership team.
The foundation’s work is about “holding people’s feet to the fire,” the actor said, highlighting that “it’s a lot of failing and then finally succeeding.” He emphasized that the couple and their team have “the patience” for that.

Bob Edwards, a Peabody-winning National Radio Hall of Famer who anchored NPR’s Morning Edition for nearly a quarter-century before moving to satellite radio, died Saturday. He was 76. National Public Radio announced his death but did not provide details.
Edwards joined the radio pubcaster in 1974 and soon afterward became a co-host of its signature news program All Things Considered with Susan Stamberg. He left that show in 1979 to be the founding anchor of Morning Edition, which he would host with his warm baritone until 2004. His first interview for the show was Charles Osgood, who died last month.
“Bob Edwards understood the intimate and directly personal connection with audiences that distinguishes audio journalism from other mediums,” NPR CEO John Lansing wrote in announcing the death, “and for decades he was a trusted voice in the lives of millions of public radio listeners.”

The closest comp to Ed Zwick’s new memoir Hits, Flops And Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood is William Goldman’s Adventures in the Screen Trade, where he posited a definitive piece of advice on the elusive formula for hit making: “Nobody knows anything.” Although he didn’t create the “if you want to send a message, try Western Union” line that has many authors, Zwick spent a career trying to defy that adage, in directing, writing and producing a long list of great and meaningful films and TV series topped by the Oscar winning Shakespeare in Love and Traffic, to Glory, Blood Diamond, About Last Night, Defiance, The Last Samurai, The Siege, thirtysomething, My So Called Life and many others.
Comparing his book to Goldman sets a high bar. Like the scripter of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid did, Zwick might fawn over great actors like Denzel Washington,...

Born in Long Beach in 1922, she graduated from Scripps College in Claremont and Columbia University for graduate school.
Taylor was hired to join a CBS documentary team led by Edward R. Murrow. She returned to Los Angeles in 1951 and was hired as the West Coast’s first female television reporter at Knxt, now Kcbs.

Ruth Ashton Taylor, a pioneering TV and radio journalist who worked with Edward R. Murrow at CBS News and was a fixture on the air in Los Angeles for decades, has died. She was 101.
Taylor’s family confirmed her death to Kcal-tv Los Angeles. Taylor, who grew up in Long Beach, was the first woman to have an on-air news role in Los Angeles when she joined what was then CBS’ Kstl-tv in late 1951. At the time, she was hired to deliver a “women’s segment” for the station’s daily half-hour newscast.
Taylor bristled at the notion of covering only “women’s stories” and delivered stories produced with solid journalistic principles. Soon, she was hired to produce a similar segment for CBS’ Los Angeles news radio powerhouse Knx.

After getting her start at CBS Radio alongside Edward R. Murrow in the 1940s, Ashton Taylor returned to her native Los Angeles and, in 1951, became the first woman on the West Coast to work in television news when she took a job with Knxt-tv (now Kcbs).

Recently, more than half a century after its premiere, Fox released a retrospective special about the storied anti-war sitcom "M*A*S*H" that included rare and previously unseen interviews with the show's cast and crew. When they weren't reminiscing about their characters and opening up about cast changes over the years, former members of the fictional 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital discussed episodes of the show that broke the TV mold, pushing the medium beyond its established boundaries and yanking on viewers' heartstrings in unexpected ways.
Among the spotlighted episodes in "M*A*S*H: The Comedy That Changed Television" was "The Interview," the season 4 finale that saw the show briefly take the form of a black-and-white war documentary. The late writer and executive producer Burt Metcalfe said the experiment took inspiration from Edward R. Murrow's 1950s newsreel show "See It Now," which included interviews in Korea during the war. The Burning Questions Swirling Around the Early Warner Bros. Discovery-Paramount Global Merger Talks
Here we go again?
Warner Bros. Discovery is flirting with the idea of acquiring Paramount Global. If a deal involving the Redstone empire comes to fruition, it would mark another transformative mega-merger for Hollywood legacy brands, following on the heels of Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, AT&T’s difficult marriage with Time Warner in 2018 and the subsequent Discovery-WarnerMedia tie-up that closed in April 2022.
Sources caution that conversations are in the earliest of early stages — following a lunch meeting this week between WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav and Paramount Global’s Bob Bakish. There’s no certainty that a deal will come to fruition, of course, especially as Paramount Global and its parent holding company National Amusements Inc. was already being pursued. But if Wbd and Paramount Global are determined to march down the aisle, the companies will have to overcome a host of obstacles, and possible regulatory and legal challenges.

Norman Lear, the writer, producer and citizen activist who coalesced topical conflict and outrageous comedy in such wildly popular sitcoms as All in the Family, Maude, Good Times, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and The Jeffersons, has died. He was 101.
Lear died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by his family who, according to a statement on his official Instagram account, sang songs until the very end.
“Norman lived a life in awe of the world around him. He marveled at his cup of coffee every morning, the shape of the tree outside his window, and the sounds of beautiful music,” read the post. “But it was people — those he just met and those he knew for decades — who kept his mind and heart forever young. As we celebrate his legacy and reflect on the next chapter of life without him, we would like to thank everyone for all the love and support.

Hollywood has had a very spotty record in telling the complete truths of some of our great musical geniuses. 1946’s Night And Day, an attempted, but really fictionalized, biopic on the life of Cole Porter with Cary Grant, totally ignored his real life homosexuality as well as sham marriage. That is just one example. The latest in the genre, Maestro having its World Premiere tonight at the Venice Film Festival, does not attempt to be a biopic at all on the great Leonard Bernstein, but instead puts its key focus on the relationship and 25 year marriage of Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein, a star in her own right on the Broadway stage. All of it is presented including bringing up their three children – Jamie, Alexander, Nina – as well as Bernstein’s own bisexuality and attraction to younger men, not a secret to his wife.

Bradley Cooper exerts and exhausts his soul to not only direct and co-write “Maestro,” about the great composer and New York Philharmonic conductor Leonard Bernstein, but also to star as the complicated musical legend widely known for writing the score for “West Side Story.” Much ado has already been made about the prosthetic nose the gentile second-time feature filmmaker dons to inhabit the specific skin of the Jewish maestro, who died of a heart attack in 1990 at 72. This feat of sculptural makeup effects by artist Kazu Hiro is an unnecessary distraction that never stops reminding you that the person underneath is actually Bradley Cooper, not Bernstein.

ITV's free streaming service continues to serve up a selection of quality films, including this black and white dissection on 1950s journalism. It marked the second time George Clooney had sat in the director's chair for a feature after Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind and proved he was a force to be reckoned with, netting six Oscar nominations. The screenplay, written by Clooney and Grant Heslov, charts the real-life on-air clash between Senator Joseph McCarthy and early broadcast journalist Edward R Murrow (David Strathairn). Although a historical drama the film had plenty to say about the current affairs of the period in which it was made and arguably also reflects America's recent Trumpian moment. With its impeccably presented adult themes and strong performances from a heavy-weight ensemble cast including Patricia Clarkson, Robert Downey Jnr and Frank Langella.

As this year’s Academy Awards are doled out, can a statuette on the mantelpiece actually hinder your Hollywood career?
The year is 2006. Competing for Best Picture, the top prize of the 78th Academy Awards, are five films. Ang Lee’s wrenchingly sad queer cowboy love story Brokeback Mountain, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger is a critical favourite.
Capote, a meaty biopic by Bennett Miller, stars the incomparable Philip Seymour Hoffman in the title role. George Clooney’s gripping Good Night, and Good Luck celebrates CBS news reporter Edward R Murrow and an era of journalistic idealism and daring. Munich, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a propulsive historical thriller about the aftermath of the Black Friday terror attack during the Munich Olympics.

Charles Kimbrough, the Emmy-nominated actor best known for his splendid decade-long portrayal of staid network anchor Jim Dial on Murphy Brown, has died. He was 86.
Kimbrough died Jan. 11 in Culver City, his son, John Kimbrough, told The New York Times.
A veteran of the stage, Kimbrough received a Tony Award nomination in 1971 for best featured actor in a musical for playing Harry in the original production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company. He then appeared as two characters in another acclaimed Sondheim musical, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Sunday in the Park With George, which debuted in 1984.

Cecilia Vega, who has been with ABC News for more than a decade, will jump to a new correspondent role on CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” leaving behind an influential role covering the White House for the Disney-backed news operation.
Her move marks a rare effort to expand the hub of on-air personnel devoted to “60 Minutes.” In the recent past, executive producer Bill Owens has worked to augment his staff, elevating correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Jon Wertheim to full-time status and trying to develop a team devoted to a separate streaming effort tied to the show, an initiative that was ultimately scrapped. Pluto, the ad-supported streaming site operated by parent company Paramount Global, does feature a channel that features curated and archival material from the long-running program.
In an interview, Owens said he has been impressed by Vega’s range of reportorial experience as well as her time spent in print journalism.

With two days to go until Christmas, I can’t think of a better gift for film lovers or those with an interest in iconic forces in the entertainment industry than the 2022 autobiography My Place in the Sun, which chronicles the life of George Stevens Jr — now 90 and still going strong in a remarkable career that has traversed the highest corridors of Hollywood to Washington, D.C.
Most significantly, however, it is the story of a father and son. The father is legendary two-time Oscar-winning director George Stevens, whose films ranged from Astaire and Rogers musicals, Gunga Din, The More the Merrier and Woman of the Year, to, following World War II, a string of immortal classics including A Place in the Sun, Giant, Shane and The Diary of Anne Frank. Edward R. Murrow once warned of television, "This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and even it can inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise, it's nothing but wires and lights in a box." If he were alive today, well, he'd be talking about a rectangle for starters. He'd also, most likely, be utterly devastated at the state of journalism in America.
17 years ago, George Clooney brilliantly restaged a precarious moment in U.S. history with "Good Night, and Good Luck." This was the tale of Murrow and his CBS News producer Fred Friendly, who laid their professional lives on the line to take on the fascist, red-baiting bully that was Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy. While McCarthy and his media attack dogs like Jack O'Brien brazenly accused CBS reporter Don Hollenbeck of being a pinko commie,...

It’s a shame George Clooney has yet to direct another film as great as 2005’s “Good Night, And Good Luck.” That film, about the 1953 conflict between journalist Edward R. Murrow and US Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Red Scare, was a coup for Clooney on every level. It received six Academy Awards noms that year, including Best Picture, and made nearly 55 million on a 7 million budget.

A TV adaptation of George Clooney’s 2005 broadcast-news drama “Good Night, and Good Luck” is in development at AMC, the network announced Thursday.
A writers’ room has been opened, and in the event of pickup, the show will go straight to series for a six-episode first season. Emmy-winning “Succession” and “Better Call Saul” writer Jonathan Glatzer will serve as the showrunner, while Grant Heslov, who co-wrote the original film’s screenplay, is attached to direct the first episode.
The “Good Night, and Good Luck” movie focused on the early days of American broadcast journalism, starring David Strathairn as CBS news hot Edward R. Murrow. The film, which depicted Murrow’s criticism of U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy during his anti-communist investigations, also starred Clooney, Patricia Clarkson, Jeff Daniels, Robert Downey Jr., and Frank Langella. The film received critical acclaim and got six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Clooney.

Good Night, And Good Luck, the 2005 feature film directed by and starring George Clooney, is being adapted for the small screen.
AMC Networks is developing a series based on the movie and has opened a writers’ room as part of its scripts-to-series model. Jonathan Glatzer, a writer/producer on series including AMC’s Better Call Saul and HBO’s Succession, will lead the room and serve as showrunner on the project.
Good Night, And Good Luck is one of three projects as part of AMC Networks’ latest tranche of scripts-to-series batch. Deadline revealed in September that the network had opened rooms for Seconds, a radical reimagining of the cult classic with a female lead at its center, and psychological horror story The Devil In Silver, envisioned as the first installment in a potential anthology franchise.

If it’s Tuesday, this must be Election Day in a year when democracy itself is on the ballot. It’s a moment that Jefferson Smith – the naive but idealistic young senator played by Jimmy Stewart – could have appreciated in the Oscar-winning 1939 classic “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” from director Frank Capra. It tops the list of 25 movies that this Gold Derby editor singles out as exemplary staples of the political genre over the past 80-plus years. Most originated on the big screen, but a few were made-for-tv.
Why bring this to you today? Think of it as a distraction tactic at a time when so many of us are overloaded with anxiety over an especially consequential election that will determine control of Congress. The list features biopics, satires, historical dramas and journalism hybrid thrillers as well as fictitious allegories.

Robert Downey Jr. has had one of the most amazing careers of any actor working in Hollywood today. Once a heartthrob in teen movies, Downey Jr. completely revitalized his career when he was cast as Tony Stark in Jon Favreau's 2008 comic book movie "Iron Man." The role nearly wasn't his, as it had previously been offered to Tom Cruise. After 10 movie appearances as the character, Downey Jr.'s personality has become synonymous with Tony Stark's. He has the same quick-witted, snarky sense of humor that makes Tony so entertaining. While sometimes actors can "phone it in" after playing a character for so long, he seemed to only get better, adding new layers to Tony as the "Infinity Saga" reached its conclusion, and his heartfelt performance in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" was surprisingly moving.
While some MCU fans may be sad to see Downey Jr. leave the character behind, it opens...

So, what do the 4th Primetime Emmy Awards, which took place Feb. 18, 1952, have in common with the 2022 edition?
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
The stars of the No. 1 TV series, CBS’ “I Love Lucy,” were the hosts of the Emmy ceremony, which was telecast in Los Angeles on Kcea, now known as Kabc. And it was the first time that the Emmys embraced national television networks. Previously, nominations and awards were bestowed on projects that were produced or aired in Los Angeles.
This year, Amy Poehler’s valentine of a film, “Lucy and Desi,” not only received strong reviews but six Emmy nominations including Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special and directing for Poehler. The Amazon Prime doc won two: writer Mark Monroe and composer David Schwartz.
Traveling back to the 1952, the ceremony took places at venerable nightclub, the Cocoanut Grove. It must have been a short show because only seven awards were handed out.

News junkies this week are agitated over the disappearance of CNN’s Reliable Sources, but cable news network chiefs have a deeper concern: the disappearance of reliable anchors.
Ratings of news shows continue to plunge as programmers struggle to figure out what sort of host (and ideology) would appeal to their once formidable audiences. Power players like John Malone have proposed that viewers might welcome a return to centrist personalities rather than shrill advocates like Sean Hannity.
Skeptics counter that there is no “middle” in America anymore: Witness the list of missing hosts like Brian Williams, Chris Wallace or Chris Cuomo. Or Brian Stelter, the abrupt, speed-talking host of Reliable Sources, who tried to find fragments of truth amid the rhetorical debris.
Centrist personalities like Michael Bloomberg increasingly find themselves drawn into firestorms like Florida’s “Stop Woke Act”; witness his fiery attack of Gov. Ron DeSantis in the Wall Street Journal‘s op-ed pages.

Just a few weeks after anchor Norah O’Donnell signed a new long-term contract extension with the network, CBS News has tapped her longtime colleague Adam Verdugo to be executive producer of the CBS Evening News.
Verdugo, who had been executive story editor on the program, will be based out of its Washington D.C. home studio. The Evening News had been without a permanent EP since Jay Shaylor left the program last summer.
At CBS and with O’Donnell, Verdugo has produced election night programming, newsmaking interviews, 60 Minutes segments and coverage of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. He joined CBS News in 2013 on what was at the time CBS This Morning, which O’Donnell co-anchored, and also helped launch her iteration of the Evening News and the recently-launched streaming reboot of Person to Person. He previously worked with O’Donnell at NBC News.

Television isn't a medium known for quiet and austerity. But when George Clooney directed his 2005 feature film, "Good Night, and Good Luck," a Cold War thriller set in the CBS newsroom, he preferred dead air for much of his score.
That film pitted revered CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow against the leader of the Communist witch-hunt, Senator Joseph McCarthy. Much of the action takes place behind Murrow's desk, and Clooney ratchets up the tension by choosing to fill the space between dialogue with silence and stressed puffs of cigarette smoke.

His goal was to become the second-best filmmaker in his house. Well, George Stevens. Jr. accomplished that and much more.
When he was celebrated last week in Washington, D.C. — where Stevens has lived for many years — the joke became: Is there anyone who hasn’t met this man, now 90 and the author of a new autobiography? “I want to be George when I grow up,” three-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Tom Friedman said.
Tom Brokaw, another longtime friend who will interview Stevens at New York City’s 92nd Street Y on Sunday, added, “George has written a wonderful book about his showbiz parents, especially his dad, who was a top-tier director in the ’30s and then took his skills to World War II.”

With over 70 years of television to consider, we had to provide ourselves with a few rules to help simplify things. With over 70 years of television to consider, we had to provide ourselves with a few rules to help simplify things. One of those was that every man in our gallery must have been an ongoing leading star at some point, preferably more often than not. That’s why you will not see such classic supporting actors as Art Carney, Tim Conway, Don Knotts, Peter Dinklage and more. We also do not include any news/sports anchors or journalists such as Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, Peter Jennings, Howard Cosell since they are not performers.

Norah O’Donnell and CBS News have come to terms on a new deal that will keep the anchor at “CBS Evening News” beyond the 2024 election, according to four people familiar with the matter.
A a spokeswoman for O’Donnell declined to make the anchor available for comment. O’Donnell disclosed her new contract Friday evening while having a toast with some producers at CBS News’ Washington, D.C., facility, according to three of these people. CBS News confirmed it had signed the anchor to a new deal on Saturday, after details, some previously reported by Puck, began to surface.
The deal was cemented despite growing speculation that CBS News, under the direction of co-president Neeraj Khemlani, might seek to replace the anchor, who has seen her profile grow during a stint co-anchoring the formerly-titled “CBS This Morning” and a tenure at a “CBS Evening News” that has moved its main...

Some films are nearly impossible to imagine in anything other than black-and-white. For example, in the case of "Schindler's List," Steven Spielberg shot his harrowing Holocaust drama as though he were a journalist recording the movie's events for the sake of posterity, its monochrome palette inseparable from the real-life historical horrors it depicts.
The same goes for 2005's "Good Night, and Good Luck," a dramatization of radio and TV journalist Edward R. Murrow's war of words with U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy and his Communist witch-hunts in the 1950s. George Clooney, directing for only the second time after "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," took...

Many worthy people are still waiting and waiting for their induction into the Television Academy’s TV Hall of Fame. Each year a small committee makes the selection of just a few people to be inducted. You can visit their busts, statues and tributes at the plaza in North Hollywood, California. Our photo gallery above offers up 50 individuals who easily deserve to be included, so please take a look at these choices, esteemed committee members, and let’s induct even more this year. Also, because of the overwhelming volume of excellent choices, how about raising the induction number from five to eight per year?

The first induction was held in 1984 and it’s been an annual tradition almost every year. That class of legends consisted of actress/executive Lucille Ball,...

David Letterman celebrates his 40th anniversary as a late night talk show host today. His first episode of “Late Night with David Letterman” aired on February 1, 1982, following “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” for the next decade (plus an 11th year after Jay Leno‘s show). Letterman returns to his former NBC home tonight to visit “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”
He departed NBC in 1993 for a 22-year run as host of “Late Show with David Letterman” on CBS. His combined 33+ years on both NBC and CBS make him the longest-running late night talk show host in American history.
That remarkable length of service and his influence on younger hosts like Conan O’Brien, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and others should make him a lock for induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. But they’ve never asked him to join. Several of his...

Gayle King, who over ten years at CBS News has become one of that ViacomCBS division’s most recognizable personnel, has signed a deal to stay for another contract cycle.
“I still feel that in many ways I’m just getting started,” King told listeners of her SiriusXM radio program on Friday.
Speculation has risen in recent weeks whether CBS News would keep both King and her colleague Norah O’Donnell, both of whom had contracts that were set to lapse this year. King last signed an extension with CBS News in 2019, when Susan Zirinsky, the former CBS News president, rebuilt the network’s morning-news program, now known as “CBS Mornings,” with her at the center. King has in recent years gained notice for her interviews with figures making waves in popular culture, including R Kelly.
During her radio show, King said she was impressed by CBS News’ plans for the...

Edward R. Murrow and Fred W. Friendly were journalism visionaries whose moves at CBS in the 1950s continue to define that company’s news division. Yet even they might be surprised to see where some of their ideas are heading.
CBS News is set to revive two landmark programs created under the auspices of one or both of those broadcasters, “Person to Person” and “CBS Reports,” but retooled for the streaming era. Norah O’Donnell will launch a new “Person to Person” series of one-on-one interviews with newsmakers and people of interest, while Gayle King is set to kick off a new series of “CBS Reports” documentaries and special reports on February 25 with a deep dive into the death of Trayvon Martin. Both series will run on the CBS News Steaming Network, part of a large-scale overhaul and expansion of the broadband news hub once known as Cbsn that initially debuted...
