Survivor favorite Parvati Shallow almost didn’t appear on the CBS show because she nearly got cast for The Real World or Road Rules a few years beforehand. Had she made the MTV series, Parvati probably would have gone on to compete in The Challenge instead.
Parvati Shallow shared a rejection letter from ‘The Real World’
A few years before making her debut on Survivor: Cook Islands, favorite Parvati Shallow nearly got cast for The Real World: Paris or Road Rules: South Pacific.
In a March 2023 Instagram photo, she shared a picture of the 2003 rejection letter she received from Bunim/Murray Productions. It began by congratulating her for making it to the interview stage as part of the top 250 applicants from the over 5,000 submissions they received.
She's got charm and she knows how to persuade. Parvati is back and @JeffProbst believes she's going to be a weapon in this game!

In a recently-revealed clip from The Challenge: Untold History, viewers can take a trip down memory lane with some of the Og cast members who were part of the show’s early evolution.
Initially, MTV’s The Challenge didn’t involve the extra-fancy production, an extensive cast of reality TV stars, or even a big money prize, as competitors roughed it in an Rv.
Those early years brought Real World and Road Rules together to see which cast might win bragging rights for various missions, among other random prizes they received. Money was on the line at times, but never near the amounts competitors battle for today.
The show’s earliest cast members included legends like The Godfather Mark Long, Darrell Taylor, Jon Brennan, Theo von Kurnatowski, and Veronica Portillo.

Doug Herzog once ran Comedy Central. And MTV. And Spike.
Since leaving his corner office in 2017, he’s parlayed his nearly four decades of television experience and integral roles in the launches of The Daily Show, The Real World and South Park into consulting and advisory gigs, board work and some executive coaching. Or, as he puts it, “busy staying busy.” Then he decided to step up to the mic.
This spring, Herzog and New York Magazine‘s pop culture critic Jen Chaney launched Basic!, a SiriusXM podcast that explores the unofficial history of (basic) cable TV. Forty-eight episodes were ordered, with guests including Jimmy Kimmel, Amy Schumer, Bryan Cranston and Ben Stiller recalling the glory days of cable. Several others, including Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart, still sit high on Herzog’s wish list.

Cris Abrego’s rise to the top of the ranks of the unscripted television world is a tale of passion and perseverance. Born and raised in suburban El Monte, Calif., he is a second-generation Mexican American who fought hard to break into the entertainment industry 25 years ago. Now, as chairman of the Americas for Paris-based Banijay, and president and CEO of Endemol Shine Holdings, Abrego is one of the highest-ranking Latino executives in Hollywood.
“When I was younger, I couldn’t get a job in the industry,” Abrego says. “I had no connections, and even though we lived 24 miles from Hollywood, it was literally a different lifetime away. I very much felt like an outsider and it was extremely difficult for people like me to find their way in.”
His life changed when he joined the team at Bunim/Murray productions, which kick-started a new generation of reality television programming with “The Real World.

Watching the turmoil in the Trump White House over the last week got me to thinking about MTV’s “The Real World.” A long time ago, at the beginning of this crazy century, I wrote a story for Rolling Stone when the show was going into its ninth season and the producers, Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray, allowed a reporter in on the “secret” casting process for the first time. As it turned out, the key to casting was to push the line far enough to find crazy and outrageous kids without hiring one who might actually kill anyone (him or.

CNN's new original series, The Nineties, from executive producer Tom Hanks, peels back the curtain on the decade's most iconic television shows.
In Et's exclusive sneak peek from the series premiere, the seven-part series takes a deeper look into The Real World phenomenon, which took the world by storm in 1992 on MTV and changed reality TV for good.
According to The Real World executive producer Jonathan Murray, MTV was looking to do a scripted program about young people. But after discovering that it was too expensive, they decided to apply the rules for a drama series to a documentary -- and hence, the "docu-soap" was born!

When she is later reunited with Johnny, the faithless husband who betrayed her to the Nazis to save his own skin, he fails to recognize who she is. Still, he discerns enough of a resemblance to propose a lowly scheme: Nelly — or Esther, as she calls herself — will pass herself...

When Gil Goldschein took over as head of Bunim/Murray Productions in April, he knew he had big shoes to fill. The company's well-liked co-founder, Jonathan Murray, 59 — partner Mary-Ellis Bunim died in 2004 from cancer — had stepped aside after spending nearly three decades as a reality TV pioneer, first by co-creating The Real World in 1992 and later producing Project Runway and Keeping Up With the Kardashians, among dozens of shows. However, just four months into his gig, Goldschein has a headline-making show with E!'s I Am Cait, which debuted July 26 to 2.

Twenty three years after he launched Bunim/Murray Prods. with the late Mary-Ellis Bunim, Jonathan Murray is handing over the reins of the company. Murray is stepping down as chairman of Bmp. The move comes exactly five years after Banijay Group bought the unscripted production company, which is a typical period required for the principals of acquired companies to remain at the helm. Two films forgotten by the Academy, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" and the Roger Ebert Documentary "Life Itself," triumphed at the recently concluded 2015 Producers Guild Awards.
"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.
Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, and James W. Skotchdopole took the Oscar glitter away from Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" when "Birdman" was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
The Oscars just got interesting! Will "Boyhood" triumph over "Birdman" at the Academy Awards?

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

What started as a novel concept – seven strangers picked to live in a house to find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real –when The Real World first premiered on MTV has become a new reality altogether.
“When we started this back in ’92, none of us had any idea it would continue even maybe past the first season,” creator Jonathan Murray (aka the “Father of Reality TV”) tells ETonline.
In the 29 seasons since Murray and production partner Mary-Ellis Bunim created the show, reality TV has evolved from sticking cameras in people’s faces into a highly conceptualized form of entertainment with people stranded on island, battling it out for a million dollars and California girls blurring the lines between reality and scripted television.

When he approached "The Real World" this season, creator and executive producer Jonathan Murray had a big task ahead of him. Not only did he have to cast seven beautiful, interesting, entertaining strangers to fill the house in San Francisco, but each cast member had to have complicated history with an ex who would also be up for moving into the house halfway through the season for "The Real World: Ex-Plosion."
As you can imagine, this made things that much harder for the "Real World" team before shooting even started. "Going into casting, this was the plan, and we looked at much fewer cast members than in previous years because we knew that they had to have a really interesting relationship with their ex," Murray tells Zap2it.
He continues, "In some ways it made the casting easier because we were so focused, but it also made it harder because...

"The Real World: Ex-Plosion" premiered on Wednesday (Jan. 8) night, and at first, the show felt like any other season of "The Real World." The seven strangers -- four girls and three guys -- met, unpacked, and promptly got drunk, partied way too hard, fought, hooked up, and used the hot tub (in the nude and in bathing suits).
And then there was Ashley, the hardest partier of them all. The San Francisco resident really dug a hole for herself on the first night in the house, getting way too wasted, saying some really offensive things about her socioeconomic status in comparison with others in the house, throwing hot burger oil at Arielle's face, and getting into it with Jamie before storming out in just a little pink bikini. Of course, the next day she sobered up, apologized for her actions, and things seemed like they had worked themselves out. That is,...

Plenty of groups give out awards for excellence in film and television at the end of every year, but no set of nominations is watched more carefully by Oscar predictors than the picks from the Producers Guild. That’s because year after year their choices end up being a fairly good indicator of which films will also be granted Best Picture nominations when the Academy makes their selections.
The Guild has announced their 2014 nominations today and there aren’t really any major surprises here. All the expected films are present, including 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Her and The Wolf Of Wall Street. Animated films that nabbed nominations are The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Epic, Frozen and Monsters University. The Producers Guild of America has accurately forecast the last six Best Picture Oscar winners, so it was good news for 10 films that were nominated today for the PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award. While Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, and American Hustle were among the films that made the cut, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Butler, and Fruitvale Station did not. Mike "The Miz" Mizanin has followed a path in show business unlike any other. While most know him as a WWE Superstar, he got his start on the MTV reality show "The Real World" before taking a shot at professional wrestling.

The Miz sat down with Zap2it to talk about the movie, which premiered on ABC Family before releasing on DVD, as well as WWE's annual "Tribute to the Troops" and how "The Real World" both helped and hindered his career.
