Beatrix Potter’s beloved literary character Peter Rabbit suffered from a bit of an identity crisis in his contemporized big-screen debut. In 2018’s “Peter Rabbit,” his headstrong, mischievous spirit didn’t bear more than a passing resemblance to the fundamental virtues the author had fused into her expansive children’s book series. He was reckless, arrogant and downright wicked, barely learning much from the ramifications of his dastardly, chaotic shenanigans. The release itself even caused a kerfuffle over allergy bullying, with some parents and one major organization objecting to a scene where the CG hare terrorizes his harried human adversary with an allergen, which led to the studio having to issue an apology.
But in returning director Will Gluck’s “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway,” we reunite with a far more remorseful, practically rehabilitated rabble-rouser, who’s struggling to rectify how the world sees him versus how he sees himself.

The new adaptation of Beatrix Potter’s timeless tale of Peter Rabbit has been plagued with bad PR from the moment its first trailer hit the internet back in September 2017, some even went as far as to nickname the half live-action/half digimation as the “anti-Paddington”.
From accusations of being too boisterous and loud in its representation of an old childhood favourite, to the truly ridiculous outrage over mocking those with allergies, its detractors seemed to be literally falling over each other to denounce the movie before it even hit our screens. Which begs the question: why have so many people taken against a film they have yet to see? Could it be because our boisterous hero is being voiced by James Corden, who depending on who you ask is either “a renaissance man for the Twenty First Century”, or “a hugely annoying know-all”. In reality, the film sits somewhere...

Though we’re still months away from the end of the school year, the studios still hope to entice the lil’ ones into the multiplex on the weekends with big screen adventures based on their beloved characters. Disney, for the last eighty years or so, has had a pretty strong lock on the classic storybook characters, many from the (often twisted) works of the Brothers Grimm, the ole’ “once upon a time” reliables. This has left the other studios to go after other inspirations, grabbing up the rights to lots of fairly recent “kids lit” best sellers. In the last decade we’ve had a franchise with flicks based on the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series (mainly live action). Just last Summer the first of a hopefully long series of “Captain Underpants” CGI movies was released. Going back a bit further, Universal has grabbed a big chunk of the...

An attempt to modernise Beatrix Potter falls flat
Dir: Will Gluck. Us. 2018. 94mins
Stuffed with slapstick and fuelled by an energetic soundtrack, the Ggi/live action feature Peter Rabbit is sure to appeal to the youngsters at which is it aimed. Yet, in attempting to inject the classic Beatrix Potter tale about a mischievous bunny with a modern anarchic sensibility, it lacks the innocent charm that made the original books so timelessly appealing.
Screenwriters Rob Lieber and Will Gluck (who also directs) have clearly aimed to do what Paul King did for Paddington, but have fallen somewhat short
The film releases in the Us on February 9 through Sony, where American audiences may not be as familiar with these characters, although a cast headed by Rose Byrne, Domhnall Gleeson and voice actors James Corden, Margot Robbie and Daisy Ridley may help. Opening in the UK on March 16, just ahead of the Easter holidays, Peter Rabbit should...

Check out the new, feature trailer for “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, the third installment in the “Narnia” series. The latest “Voyage of the Dawn Treader” trailer hails from overseas. For the third film in a successful fantasy franchise, it’s interesting how little buzz, or fanboy interest the film has gotten with just another couple months to go before its release. Fox Walden has released the first trailer for their third “Narnia” film, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, which reunites those indefatigable English orphans with the magical land of Narnia, where things like talking lions, sword-wielding mouses, and Universal Health Care are possible. Wait, what? No Universal Health Care in Narnia? Oh well, at least they have talking lions and sword-wielding mouses. Those are cool. Check out the fist trailer for the franchise’s first 3D offering below.
