Executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have reunited for a third historical mini-series, this time taking to the skies with Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air.” The series follows the members of the 100th Bomb Group, a Boeing B-17 heavy bomber unit that operated in the Air Force during WWII. This isn’t Hanks and Spielberg’s first war-time series, however. They previously executive produced “The Pacific,” which charted the US Marine Corps’ actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Before that, they created “Band of Brothers,” which dramatized the story of the Easy Company of the US Army, who went on a mission in Europe during WWII.
“Masters of the Air” looks to be a major Emmys player this year, particularly as it stars popular actors Callum Turner, Austin Butler, and Barry Keoghan. However, before we look ahead at that series’ Emmy potential, lets look back at...

“Band of Brothers” writer Bruce McKenna is teaming with David Broyles (“Six”) and Nick Jones Jr. (“Yasuke”) to write and produce a limited TV series “Buffalo Rangers” about the 2nd Ranger Company, the only all-Black special operations combat unit in U.S. history. They were notable for their efforts in the Korean War.
The series is being produced by South Korea-based Moving Pictures Company, which has a growing English-language slate. No broadcaster or streamer has been announced.
Producing alongside Broyles, Jones and McKenna are Thomas Suh (through his production company Système D Entertainment), Paul Merryman (“The Outpost”), Debra Martin Chase and Jariko Denman (“The Outpost”), a retired master sergeant with 15 combat deployments.
Tim McCoy, a 2nd Ranger company historian for many years, will serve as a consultant to the project.

With four more episodes left to air, History has decided to cancel its gritty military drama Six.
Ratings have not been kind to the second season, but there were some big changes to the story of the ten-episode chapter in comparison to Six Season 1.
What hasn't changed is camaraderie between the characters on one of the few shows on television that currently features men supporting other men in a sea of programming that features women doing it all the time.
Six Season 2 began immediately after Rip was shot. The character was ultimately killed, leaving a hole in the cast left by Walton Goggins.
The Seal Team felt the pain of their former leader's loss and with Bear at the helm and the addition of CIA officer Gina Cline (Olivia Munn), began to scour Eastern Europe, infiltrating hostile territory and terrorist hotspots like Chechnya as they track the mastermind behind the...

Exclusive: History has opted not to order a third season of its Navy Seal drama series Six. The decision comes with four more episodes left to air from the 10-episode second season. They will run as scheduled. I hear the timing of the decision was tied to the cast options expiring at the end of this week.
Six was a breakout for History when it debuted in early 2017, drawing strong ratings and earning a Season 2 renewal ahead of its Season 1 finale for a 10-episode second season, up from the eight-episode first season.
Ratings have dropped in Season 2, running almost 50% below the Season 1 averages in Live+same day, which I hear was behind the cancellation decision.
History’s scripted series portfolio includes flagship Vikings, Knightfall, which I hear is gearing up for a second season, and the upcoming Robert Zemeckis-produced UFO series Blue Book.

Television is a fast-paced business, where a show can be written, developed, ordered, cast, produced, and aired all within the course of a year. But sometimes, executives get ahead of themselves and shows are announced prematurely, or circumstances change, forcing delay.
IndieWire combed through some high-profile TV announcements from the past few years that haven’t yet seen the light of day, and asked their status. Some are still in the works; some are still “in development,” which could be code for “we don’t want to admit yet that this show is dead”; and some have quietly faded away.

Coming off the blood-splattering goodness of the “Evil Dead” remake, Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez is now looking to not just talk about sending your souls to the pits of Hell, he’s actually going there by helming a live-action big-screen version of the videogame “Dante’s Inferno” for Universal. Based on the Electronic Arts game of the same name, “Dante’s Inferno” will follow a knight name Dante Aligheri, “who with the help of the poet Virgil ventures into the nine rings of hell to rescue his beloved Beatrice. In the process, he becomes an unwitting pawn in an ancient war between heaven and hell.” Oh, that old thing. The game was previously adapted into an animated movie called “Dante’s Inferno: An Animated Epic” in 2010, that our very own Dedpool reviewed here. You can check it out if you’re so inclined. Or not. Really, it’s entirely up to you.

Back in 2010, Universal Pictures won the bidding war for the film rights to the Electronic Arts version of Dante’s Inferno, but not much of anything had been heard about the project since. Now, three years later, it looks like the studio has finally found its director, with Evil Dead helmer Fede Alvarez in negotiations to direct.
This film will be based on the video game version of the story, which was adapted from the first part of Dante Alighieri’s 14th-century epic poem known as The Divine Comedy. In the video game version, Dante is re-imagined as a Templar knight and has to journey through the nine circles of hell. His goal is reclaiming the soul of his love, Beatrice, from the hands of Lucifer.

Before EA even released the Dante’s Inferno video game in 2010, they were shopping the concept around to a number of movie studios and Universal acquired the rights. When the game didn’t perform as well as expected and a sequel didn’t go right into development, we expected that was the last we’d hear of movie plans. However, it’s being reported that the project is moving forward with Evil Dead‘s Fede Alvarez at the helm.
Deadline is reporting that Alvarez is currently in talks to direct, with Eric Newman, Marc Abraham, and EA’s Patrick O’Brien serving as producers. It’s quite possible that Alvarez will want to make changes to the script, but it was previously written by Jay Basu with an earlier draft written by Bruce McKenna.
There are no additional details at this time, but we’ll keep readers posted on any developments.

Fox and FX announced today that they're developing two "large-scale drama projects," which basically means "pretty long, fancy miniseries." Their hope is to pick at least one of the two to air a single ten-to-twelve-episode series in 2014. Of the two shows, Wayward Pines and Blood Brothers, Pines might have a leg up as a result of being executive-produced by M. Night Shyamalan. Based on the best-selling novel Pines by Blake Crouch, the Twin Peaks–esque series follows a Secret Service agent as he searches for two missing agents in a creepy, small town. Its competition is Blood Brothers. Created by Bruce C. McKenna (writer on Band of Brothers, co-executive producer on The Pacific), it's about the West Point class of 1861 as the Civil War was just beginning. Hopefully the Shyamalanian twist is not that they're actually the same show ooOOooOoo.

But his investigation leads to more questions than answers in this psychological thriller. Shyamalan, Donald De Line, and Ashwin Rajan will executive produce the project with Chad Hodge, who is writing the script.McKenna’s Civil War-era “Blood Brothers” is based on the true story of the West Point class of 1861, which became divided as the country tore itself apart over slavery.

Fox is developing a pair of miniseries. Or, since "miniseries" is a bad word in television these days, "long-form event series."
The two projects, at least one of which will air in 2014, are "Wayward Pines," a thriller executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan, and "Blood Brothers," about the West Point class of 1861 that was divided by the Civil War.
"'Wayward Pines' and 'Blood Brothers' represent exactly the kind of high-impact, 10- to 12-part events we set out to develop when we entered the limited series business," Fox Entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly says. "These two series are the first of many big ideas, big names and big talent that you can anticipate will be on our air in the next 12 to 24 months."

Eric Bana is in talks to star in the Jerry Bruckheimer produced, Scott Derrickson (Sinister) directed film project Beware the Night. The movie is a paranormal police thriller based on the book by Ralph Sarchie. The story follows a New York cop who investigates demonic possessions, exorcisms and other supernatural occurences.
The movie has been in development for years, it started out with Derrickson on board, and has since gone through the hands of filmmakers like David Ayer, Bryan Bertino and Bruce C. McKenna. It's now back in the hands of Derrickson. Mark Wahlberg was previously offered the lead role at one point but he turned it down.
I've enjoyed most of the films that the director has made, and this seems like a great project for him. He's also signed on to direct Two Eyes Staring with Charlize Theron for Summit Entertainment, which is a remake of the Dutch thriller Zwart Water.

Variety is reporting that Jerry Bruckheimer Films is going to produce the “paranormal police thriller” Beware the Night. Scott Derrickson, who had a decent hit this year with Sinister, will direct and Eric Bana is in talks to star.
If cast, Bana will play a NYC police officer who investigates paranormal activities.
There’s a bit of a long and confusing history behind Beware the Night, and you can read it hear:
“As Jbf purchased a treatment for a Beware the Night book to be written by Ralph Sarchie several years ago. Derrickson and his writing partner Paul Harris Boardman were the first to take a crack at adapting the material. David Ayer, Bryan Bertino and Bruce C. McKenna were subsequently tapped to work on the screenplay before Jbf went back to Derrickson to revise the script and direct the movie, to which Screen Gems is considering acquiring distribution rights.

TNT has passed on its Western drama pilot Tin Star aka Gateway. The move comes after TNT brass screened the network’s three completed pilots – Tin Star, Monday Mornings (aka Chelsea General) and Scent Of The Missing. TNT is not expected to make series pickups today, but Monday Mornings had been the clear frontrunner, with the search-and-rescue drama Scent Of The Missing also in serious contention. Tin Star was shot last fall. TNT did not make a decision when the pilot was delivered, instead opting to wait for its other pilots. TNT’s fourth pilot of the current batch, Frank Darabont’s L.A. Noir, is still filming. Along with the broadcast networks and USA, TNT is holding its upfront presentation next week. The action/adventure Tin Star, executive produced by Bruce C. McKenna and Danny Cannon, was set in a Colorado town in the 1880s. It told the story of...

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a decent Western on TV, but thanks to TNT, we’re about to get one in “Gateway” (aka “Tin Star”), which has cast “Priest’s” Cam Gigandet as its leading man. The show will be set in a “Colorado town of the same name in the 1880s, Gateway tells the story of three brothers who step in to save their town when their sheriff father is murdered, pitting them against a corrupt cattle baron determined to make the town his own.” Gigandet will play one of the brothers, Jake. Bruce C. McKenna and Danny Cannon will produce the show, though apparently they still need to cast someone “big” enough for TNT to greenlight the pilot episode. If Gigandet is the lead and he’s not a big enough name for that greenlight, my guess is McKenna and Cannon will be...

Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ron Moore and Caprica writer Matt Roberts have just sold a new western drama TV series to ABC called Hangtown. I a big fan of Moores work, I think the guy is a great storyteller, I loved both Galactica and Caprica, it's a shame that Caprica didn't get picked back up. I think it's awesome we are going to see these guys bring us a new TV western though, and it sounds like it's going to be pretty awesome.
The series is described as a "Western with a procedural overlay, Hangtown is set in the early 1900s in a frontier town that’s begun rapidly expanding with the coming of the railroad. It centers on three characters: the Marshal, a Matt Dillon/Clint Eastwood type who prefers to solve crimes by his instinct, a young Doctor from the East Coast who is interested in using the...

[1] Band of Brothers writer Bruce McKenna and Nikita producer/director Danny Cannon are developing a new Western series for TNT titled Gateway. The 1880s-set action/adventure series will follow the three sons of a murdered sheriff in the titular town of Gateway, Colorado, who band together in order to save their town from a corrupt cattle baron. (Is there any other kind?) TNT's currently given the show a "cast-contingent pilot order," so we can probably expect casting rumors to start flying around soon. Westerns are having something of a moment right now on the small screen. Also coming up is AMC's post-Civil War series Hell on Wheels [2], as well as a possible remake of Wild Wild West [3] from CBS; NBC was also working on a Western show, but scrapped the project after the pilot stage. The premise for Gateway sounds like classic Western, and with McKenna and Cannon behind it,...
