- William McIlvanney was born on November 25, 1936 in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland, UK. He was a writer, known for Crossing the Line (1990), Screen Two (1984) and Play for Today (1970). He died on December 5, 2015 in Netherlee, Glasgow, Scotland, UK.
- In 2016 Scotland's International Crime Writing Festival named it's 'Godfather of Tartan Noir' prize after him. His son Liam won it in 2018.
- He is the brother of acclaimed sportswriter Hugh McIlvanney.
