Channel 4 has paid tribute to the “wonderful and generous” PR exec Lesley Land, who died unexpectedly last week.
In a statement this afternoon, the channel, which employed Land for the past eight years, said it is “deeply saddened by the news that our long-standing colleague and friend has passed away.”
“She was the driving force of many of Channel 4’s most memorable press campaigns of the last decade, delivering them with flair and panache,” added the statement.
“Lesley was a wonderful friend, a generous colleague and made tremendous fun wherever she went. But ultimately family was at the core of Lesley’s life. Our hearts go out to them at this devastating time. Much loved by all who knew her, she will be sorely missed.”

Whether palling up with Bridget Jones, undermining Alan Partridge or co-founding Smack the Pony, the comic actor has been making audiences laugh for three decades. What would you like to ask her?
You’ll best know Sally Phillips on film for her role as best mate Shazza in the Bridget Jones trilogy. (She originally auditioned for the lead role before stealing the show anyway.) And on telly as giggling Linton Travel Tavern receptionist Sophie in I’m Alan Partridge, struggling to contain herself while reporting back messages from Mr P Nesshead.
Also a familiar face on panel shows such as Qi; Would I Lie to You? (does Sally really play a game at her local swimming pool called I’ve Just Been in the Water With Trevor McDonald?) and Taskmaster.

God Save The Queen. And Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth I.
Queen Elizabeth II was amused today by yet another celebration of her 70th year on the throne. This time, it was a Windsor castle event called “A Gallop Through History,” which the horse-loving Queen delighted in watching.
The theatrical arena event included 1300 performers and 500 horses, and consisted of four acts, each overseen by a different event host, including Top Gun’s Tom Cruise, British actor Damian Lewis, Bridgeton’s Adjoa Andoh and veteran UK performer Alan Titchmarsh.
The event was designed to take viewers on a “gallop through history,” a reenactment dating from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I through the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Highlighting the show was a stage performance featuring Mirren as Elizabeth I whom she previously portrayed in the HBO miniseries Elizabeth I. The Oscar winner also has played Elizabeth II twice in the...

Legendary UK broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald is to be the face of E4’s Gamesmaster reboot as the iconic format returns to screens after almost 25 years off air.
McDonald takes on the role originally filled by Sir Patrick Moore in the video games competition, setting up the challenges and watching over competitors as they compete in virtual battles to claim a Golden Joystick Trophy.
He will co-host alongside Scottish comedian Robert Florence, esports expert Frankie Ward and newcomer Ty Logan, one of E4’s recently-announced faces of the future.
McDonald, a hugely popular British newsreader who has been reporting news for five decades on ITV, said he is “delighted to be taking on this iconic role for a new generation of viewers.”

Channel 4’s groundbreaking “Black to Front” initiative, which sees the network’s entire schedule led by Black talent on and off screen for one day, has garnered mostly positive reactions despite concerns about tokenism.
Among the programs was a brief return for popular 1990s morning show “The Big Breakfast,” this time with comedian Mo Gilligan and presenter Aj Odudu slipping into original hosts Johnny Vaughn and Denise van Outen’s seats on the couch, and distinguished newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald taking over from Anne Robinson on “Countdown.” “Black to Front” will continue to air into primetime, with some of the specially commissioned shows like “Highlife” and “Big Age” premiering later on Friday.
There was some concern ahead of the broadcast that the initiative was tokenistic. “As a black person in the UK TV industry all i wanted was a fair and equal shot as my white counterparts..,” comedian London Hughes...

Viacom International Studios UK has scored its first commission for a non-Viacom network with a two-part train doc series.
The production division, which was formerly known as Elephant House Studios, is making Trevor McDonald’s Indian Train Adventure for ITV, a rival to its sibling network C5.
Viacom International Studios UK had previously only produced for its own channels including C5, Comedy Central and MTV and the move is the latest example of an in-house studio making shows for third parties.
The two-parter will follow newsreader McDonald as he travels from Mumbai to Delhi on a luxurious train. He will disembark to meet people from all walks of life and gain an insight into modern India across the thousand-mile journey.
The series, which will be distributed by Viacom International Media Networks’ content sales division, was commissioned by Jo Clinton-Davis, ITV Controller of Factual, and Sue Murphy, ITV Head of Factual Entertainment.

Former “Doctor Who” star David Tennant will play the father of a severely learning-disabled girl in “There She Goes,” a new comedy for the BBC from Sharon Horgan’s production company Merman.
The five-part series will go out on the pubcaster’s BBC Four channel. Tennant and Jessica Hynes (“Shaun of the Dead”) star as Simon and Emily, respectively, the parents of 9-year-old Rosie, played by Miley Locke. Edan Hayhurst appears as Ben, Rosie’s brother.
Shaun Pye (“Todd Margaret”) penned the series. The producers said that each episode would shine a light on day-to-day life with Rosie, from simply trying to take her to the park to explaining that every day isn’t her birthday. Sky Vision is selling the series internationally.
Merman also won a second-season order for “Motherland,” its comedy about modern parenting and family life.
The shows were announced as part of the BBC’s new comedy slate.

There’s a lot of attention focused on the Suicide Squad, what with the movie being filmed right now and coming out next year, and, yes, it’s based on the version of the Squad that I created back in the 80s and, yes, I should see some money for the use of Amanda Waller (not the Squad per se since it already existed in another form in the Dcu) and that’s all pretty cool. Might as well tell my version of how this all started and give some credit where credit is due. You may have heard/read some of this before but I’m at the age where repeating stories is de rigeur so let’s do this.
My first shout out goes to Robert (“Bobby”) Greenberger who was our first editor on the Squad. I had met Bob at several conventions and while waiting in airports afterwards for our respective planes.

Reporter Sam Rubin confusing Jackson with Laurence Fishburne is an all-too-common mistake that reminds black people of our outsider status
"Did you get a lot of reaction to that Super Bowl commercial?"
"What Super Bowl commercial?"
Sam Rubin, entertainment reporter for the "No 1 morning show in Hollywood", has just made an epic blunder – confusing his guest, actor Samuel L Jackson (who's black), with Laurence Fishburne (he's also black, and also an actor), who really did appear in the commercial.
Jackson's reaction is classic. He tells the squirming reporter: "We may all be black and famous but we don't all look alike." And he doesn't let up: "You're the entertainment reporter for this station and you don't know the difference between me and Laurence Fishburne? There must be a very short line for your job."
What makes the error even worse is that the Super Bowl advert played on Fishburne's high-profile...

Matt Smith has ditched Doctor Who for Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. It's quite a contrast, and he's not the first to do this sort of thing. So why do actors love these big switcheroos?
Matt Smith really doesn't want to be typecast as the guy from Doctor Who any more. That's why he's starring as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho – a musical stage version of American Psycho, in fact. As professional handbrake turns go, it's pretty drastic. But he isn't the first. History is littered with actors who've been pushed to extreme measures to break out of their typecasting straitjackets. Here are some of the best.
Hugh Grant
It's a shame nobody really saw Cloud Atlas, because it contained the largest assembly of actors performing against type in modern cinema. Lovely, funny Tom Hanks played a sort of post-apocalyptic caveman. Halle Berry was a male Korean dentist. But most startling of all,...

Word of advice to any politician attending an event sponsored by the Aarp: don't insult your opponent for their old age. But Anthony Weiner did just that last night, when he got heated with Republican rival George McDonald in an open mic moment picked up by NY1. McDonald got annoyed when Weiner touched him, and the two candidates got testy with each other right in front of a microphone, culminating in Weiner snidely calling McDonald "grandpa."...

The iconic broadcaster hosted the channel's flagship evening news show from 1992 before retiring in 2005. A Separation (Sony) This drama from Iran won the 2011 Best Foreign Film Oscar, telling the story of a couple who file for a legal separation, with the wife pushing for a divorce. He won’t leave his Alzheimer’s-afflicted father behind, while she is wanting to take their young daughter with her to the United States. After a series of misunderstandings, threats and legal actions, the couple find that there is more than just their marriage that’s on the line. Hyper-realistic to a fault, reminiscent of the neo-realist films that came out of post-ww II Europe, but also repressive and redundant in the extreme, with the characters seeming to throw the same temper tantrum for two hours straight while the story, meanwhile, seems stalled. Wildly overpraised film is a real litmus test, with viewers seeming to be staunch defenders or equally impassioned detractors. It did win an Oscar,...

Mary-Kay Wilmers is determined to plug the book she has written about her family of Russian baddies; notably Leonid Eitingon, who hired Trotsky's assassin. Sod Sam, and his illness, and all this mother-son relationship yuck, she says, can't we get something worthwhile out of this?
"People always talk about Sam," she complains. Earlier this year My Friend Sam, a Storyville documentary about her son, was shown on BBC Four. Now an ebook has been written about him. Perhaps it was inevitable. After all, Mary-Kay runs the prestigious London Review of Books, while his father, Stephen Frears, is a leading film director whose work includes The Queen, The Grifters, Dangerous Liaisons and My Beautiful Laundrette.

Towie stars have reportedly been reprimanded for their rowdy and lewd behaviour.
The cast of the ITV2 reality TV show, including Amy Childs, Sam Faiers and Chloe Sims are said to have been given a dressing down by show bosses, who want them to stop rolling in and out of nightclubs with their skirts round their arses and now want them to represent the show and the channel in a more appropriate way.
Also executives wants the young stars to stop socialising with those from “less popular” shows after Lauren Goodger, James ‘Arg’ Argent and Lydia Bright were pictured with ‘Made In Chelsea’ newbies Ollie Locke and Gabriella Ellis at a recent event.
A ‘Towie’ insider told the Daily Star newspaper: “After ‘Towie’ won a BAFTA, the producers were on cloud nine. But in recent weeks they feel the stars are letting them down.

Piers Morgan has hit back at Trevor McDonald after the ITN news presenter criticised his recent interview with Prime Minister Gordon Brown. McDonald had suggested that it was wrong for Morgan to give Brown an "easy ride" during his Life Stories show without giving "the same opportunity" to his opponents. He also criticised Morgan's "inappropriate", "undignified" and "impertinent" line of questioning. Morgan told the Daily Mail: "I stared at these quotes, open-mouthed and incredulous. Is this not the same Sir Trevor McDonald whose own interview with David Cameron was widely ridiculed for having the journalistic gravitas of Bungle grilling Zippy on the set of Rainbow? "Just for the record, I did offer the other leaders the chance to face a proper grilling from me (more)...
