Since its debut 1966, Star Trek has been about boldly going forward. And no Star Trek series has gone further forward than Discovery. After a rocky first few seasons set about a decade before The Original Series, Discovery found its place by jumping to the 32nd century, farther into the future than any other entry in the franchise.
As Discovery prepares to end its mission with its fifth and final season, fans might be wondering what’s next for the 32nd century and the TV franchise as a whole. With Strange New Worlds staying in Disco’s original pre-tos era and Lower Decks and Prodigy exploring the period after the Next Generation movie Nemesis, Disco’s exit seems to leave the 32nd century unexplored.
But not so fast, says Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “I think you can expect more of [Discovery’s] 32nd century,” Kurtzman teases in an exclusive interview for...

Live-action anime adaptations offer a chance to experience childhood favorites in a fresh way. These adaptations go beyond nostalgia, using Hollywood budgets to bring fantastical anime elements to life in ways animation can’t.

Making a triumphant return to television with Star Trek: Picard, Patrick Stewart reprised his beloved role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Narrating the story of a retired Picard, who is approached by a mysterious woman for help, only to later find that she holds the key to the secrets of his past life, the show features Alison Pill, Ed Speleers, Jonathan Frakes, and more.

Ensign Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes) first appeared in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Ensign Ro", and she introduced an interesting character dynamic to the series. Whereas most of the characters on "Next Generation" were wholly devoted to Starfleet principals and unwaveringly loyal to Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), Ensign Ro felt that Starfleet frequently let suffering go unacknowledged. She was combative and disobedient as a result, often openly defying her captain and responding to diplomatic solutions with belligerence.
Forbes' performance was so assured and defiant, however, that Ro's disobedience never felt impulsive or immature. Her reactions were organic and principled, revealing a hardened but understandable heart. Ro only appeared in eight episodes of "Next Generation," but she was always welcome to shake up the system and offer metaphorical headbutts to her commanding officers.

At the start of "Star Trek: Picard," the title character (Patrick Stewart) is living in retirement on his generations-old family vineyard. Although one can replicate synthehol in the future, it's comforting to know that some vintners will still be making wine the old-fashioned way. The full range of wines made at Château Picard hasn't been listed in the official canon of "Star Trek," but sharp-eyed Trekkies have noted that characters have been seen drinking a Château Picard Bordeaux and bottles labeled Château La Barre. Thanks to enterprising booze-hounds, real-life bottles of Château Picard can be purchased online. The Klingon blood wine is actually just a cabernet sauvignon.
Given that the Picard family had been in the wine-making business for centuries, one might assume that Château Picard is very fine indeed, exploring and idly conquering the palate like Alexander the Great. Like Picard himself, I imagine Château Picard to be dry and complex,...

At the very end of the first season of "Star Trek: Picard," after the story had concluded and everyone was headed back home, the violent bounty hunter Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Admiral Picard's close friend Raffi (Michelle Hurd) sat idly conversing. They reached out and began romantically holding hands, implying that the characters were initiating a romance. Previously throughout "Star Trek," both Seven and Raffi had only been seen having romances with men, so their respective bisexuality came as a pleasant surprise.
Sadly, at the start of the second season of "Picard," enough time had passed that Seven and Raffi had already dated for a while ... and had broken up. There was now a great deal of romantic resentment between them, and they had to struggle to fulfill their mission in the 21st century (the second season featured a time travel plot). The third season of "Star Trek: Picard," overseen by showrunner Terry Matalas, ended with an intriguing new setup. After the season's story had concluded, the action fast-forwarded one year to when Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) had become a provisionary ensign in Starfleet. Jack, with his father (Patrick Stewart) and mother (Gates McFadden), took a good long gander at his new assignment, the Titan-a, newly rechristened the Enterprise-g. This new ship was to be captained by Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), formerly the first officer on board the Titan-a, and the vessel was poised to go on its first deep-space mission with its new name.
Also on board were Raffi (Michelle Hurd), Seven's ex-girlfriend and also her first officer, as well as former Titan crewmembers Lieutenant Matthew Arliss Mura (Joseph Lee), Ensign Kova Rin Esmar (Jin Maley), and presumably Dr. Ohk (Tiffany Shepis). In a post-credits stinger after the final "Picard" episode,...

The classic sitcom Bewitched ran for eight seasons and a total of 254 episodes, premiering on September 17, 1964 and wrapping up on March 25, 1972. A spin-off called Tabitha came and went in 1977, then Bewitched received a big screen reboot back in 2005… and in recent years, Sony has shown that they’re very eager to reboot the property again. Back in 2018, it was announced that Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and writer Yamara Taylor were working on a TV series reboot that would give the concept “an interracial twist”. That didn’t go anywhere. In 2021, it was reported that Terry Matalas (MacGyver) and Travis Fickett (12 Monkeys) had been hired to write the screenplay for a new Bewitched movie. That never made it into production… and apparently the idea has been abandoned, because now Deadline has learned that writer/producer Judalina Neira has signed an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television that’s focused on developing...

This post contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard season 3.
But what about Alexander?
Sure, the third season of Star Trek: Picard gave Star Trek fans everything that we wanted to see, from the Enterprise-d crew reunited on a restored version of that beloved ship to a reconciliation between Jean-Luc Picard and Ro Laren. But for all the good done in the series, Picard‘s third season never answered the big question on the mind of every Trekkie: what about Alexander, the son left to, and often ignored by, Worf after the death of his mother K’Ehleyr?
If Picard showrunner Terry Matalas gets a chance to make his ideal spinoff series, Star Trek: Legacy, we would finally get the answers we want, and frankly, deserve.
Matalas shared his idea during the Trek Talks 3 telethon, a charity event to raise money for the Hollywood Food Coalition. During a panel reuniting the...

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
Do you remember how great it felt when Jean-Luc Picard stepped onto the bridge of the restored USS Enterprise-d, with all the members of his senior staff around him and ready for one last adventure? Remember how much better that was than watching Icheb from Voyager get mutilated or watching Picard ride dune buggies in Star Trek: Nemesis? Patrick Stewart does not.
In a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stewart talked about an upcoming Star Trek movie centered on at least part of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast. “I heard only last night about a script that is being written, but written specifically with the actor, Patrick, to play in it,” Stewart told host Josh Horowitz. “And I’ve been told to expect to receive it within a week or so.”

"Star Trek: Picard" shares more than a little DNA with "12 Monkeys." In its third season, the recently ended "Trek" sequel series was captained by showrunner Terry Matalas, who co-created the wild Syfy Channel adaptation of Terry Gilliam's also-wild film. Aside from a shared showrunner, "Star Trek: Picard" was home to several key cast and crew members who worked on both shows – and nearly featured one more.
In a Reddit Ama about the show's third season, user Drewski1138 pointed out several narrative choices in "Picard" that echoed "12 Monkeys," including references to a mysterious red realm, a new drug called "Splinter" (a reference to "12 Monkeys" time travel), and more. "Were there any '12 Monkeys' Easter eggs we might have missed ... Were there any that you were told you couldn't put in?" the user asked Matalas. The answer? The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" reunited the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" for one final adventure that gave fans a satisfying conclusion to the beloved TV series, and part of that meant returning to the bridge of one of the franchise's most well-known ships. In the penultimate episode, engineer Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) reveals that he's been restoring the Enterprise-d himself. The ship's former crew need a vessel that's not hooked up to Starfleet systems, and the D is perfect because of its retro technology. Even those who found the farewell to "Next Gen" a little too full of fan-service had to be somewhat excited to see the old gang back on the bridge of a ship not seen since "Star Trek Generations." For many sci-fi nerds of a certain age, the Enterprise-d feels like a second home, and it's joyous to see that some things don't ever change,...

In the third and final season of "Star Trek: Picard," a vicious Changeling named Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) is eager to apprehend Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Vadic is a vicious killer who has no compunction about blowing up ships and murdering thousands. It seems she and several of her Changeling compatriots were medically tortured during the Dominion War (a conflict dramatized on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine") and was in no mood to offer forgiveness. Vadic commanded a starship she called the Shrike, a massive, pointy, claw-like vessel that was armed to the teeth. Captain Riker (Jonathan Frakes) took one look at the Shrike and declared it to be more guillotine than starship.
On the bridge of the Shrike, Vadic sat in an enormous chair, surrounded in the shadows by masked servants who fired weapons and cut down enemy combatants. The chair, as it so happens,...

At the conclusion of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," after the villains had been defeated, showrunner Terry Matalas had properly and carefully set up another "Star Trek" spinoff series, should Paramount+ have wanted it. Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) had received a posthumous recommendation for a captaincy from her late commanding officer Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick) and was put in command of the U.S.S. Titan-a, now newly rechristened the U.S.S. Enterprise-g. One can perhaps assume that the rechristening was a special favor for the aging Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) now over 100 and happy to have a legacy.
Also serving on the Enterprise-g were a raft of characters seen throughout "Picard," most notably Seven's ex-girlfriend Raffi (Michelle Hurd), who would serve as her first officer. While the first two seasons of Star Trek: Picard didn’t win praise from every fan, it’s safe to say that the recent third season was a home run. Patrick Stewart had initially resisted turning the series into a Next Generation reunion, but showrunner Terry Matalas made it work in a way that felt organic. There have been rumblings of a Star Trek: Picard spin-off, but Patrick Stewart has something else in mind… a Star Trek: Picard movie.
“I am gently pushing Paramount to let us do one single Picard movie,” Patrick Stewart wrote in Time. “Not a Next Generation movie, as we have already done four of those. This would be an expansion and deepening of the universe as we’ve seen it in Star Trek: Picard. I’ve discussed this with Jonathan [Frakes], Brent [Spiner], and LeVar [Burton], and they are all game.” Stewart added that if the Star Trek: Picard movie does happen,...

You know, it's pretty refreshing to see the tireless and constantly put-together crew of the USS Enterprise let their hair down sometimes (so to speak) and blow off some steam while on the clock. Tales of the cast of "The Next Generation" goofing off between takes of the original show are practically the stuff of legend, all but driving directors mad with their unparalleled ability to flub lines, break props, and otherwise waste hours and hours of shooting days. So when "Star Trek: Picard" showrunner Terry Matalas gathered the cast together for one final swan song in season 3 of the reunion series, everyone involved simply had to know what they were in for this time around. Now, Trekkies are finally getting a sense of just how infectious their fun-loving and joyful chemistry truly was while on set.

After two divisive seasons, the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard was a welcome return to form for many fans. Not only did the show bring back the original cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but it also included appearances from other Star Trek characters from across the franchise. The Star Trek: Picard writers obviously couldn’t include everyone they wanted, but they did give serious thought to including Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton), son of Deep Space Nine’s Captain Benjamin Sisko.

The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" began in a very tantalizing place. It seemed that Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), likely over 100 years old, was ready to sell all his belongings and abandon any notion of legacy. He wasn't ready to let his home become a museum of his past, eager to start a new adventure. Picard was still friends with his old first officer Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), now a retired captain, possibly in his late 80s. Both characters had grown up considerably since the events of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and they had both developed an affable, friendly rapport that they never had when locked into their professional positions. They had always been work friends, but now they were real friends.
Early scenes in the season saw Picard and Riker drinking together in a bar, chatting about how modern Starfleet is so much more energetic than they are.

There's one pressing question on the minds of every Trekkie out there: What do we have to do to convince Paramount to give the "Strange New Worlds" writers 20+ episodes so they can fully wild out and throw every zany concept they have at us for as long as possible? Okay, maybe there are two questions, the second of which might be even more important: When are we finally going to get a "Star Trek: Legacy" series?
Season 3 of "Picard," which turned into an extended reunion special with Patrick Stewart and almost the entire cast of "The Next Generation," quickly led to calls from fans who wanted to experience more adventures of the crew of the USS Titan-a. Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: there’s some bad news for Star Trek fans. No, we’re not talking about the galling cancelation and removal of Star Trek: Prodigy from the Paramount+ streaming service, although that is indeed bad news.
We’re talking about the hopes some fans had that Star Trek: Picard would lead to more adventures featuring the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation. After holding off a full reunion for two seasons, the third season of Picard brought the one-time captain back with his most famous senior officers, along with surprise appearances from the likes of Ro Laren and Elizabeth Shelby. The result was an utterly delightful season of television, one that certainly touched on previous adventures, but also created new dynamics and introduced new characters.

During a recent Gold Derby video interview, senior editor Daniel Montgomery and contributor Tony Ruiz spoke in-depth with Patrick Stewart (“Star Trek: Picard”) about his Paramount Plus sci-fi drama, which is eligible at the 2023 Emmys. While the final season finds Stewart’s iconic character, Jean-Luc Picard, in the comfort of working with his old crew, the admiral is far from comfortable. He deals with the sudden discovery that he has a grown son (Ed Speleers) with Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) that he must protect from Vadic (Amanda Plummer), a vengeance-seeking Changeling hell bent on capturing Picard’s son.
“It was in every sense, an extraordinary experience,” Stewart revealed about his three-season return to the world of “Star Trek.” The legendary actor later added, “And although I had serious doubts to begin with, at the end, I regretted nothing.

“We’re all blessed in some ways but also cursed to have the amount of legacy on this show because it means that you have almost 56 years of creative material to draw from, but that also means you have a lot of rules and regulations and canon that you have to adhere to. So there’s a kind of pressure to it as well,” notes “Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas about the technical details that have accumulated throughout “Trek” history. Star Trek might be about a future in which humanity has put aside its petty differences, but Star Trek fandom is all about squabbles. Is Picard a better captain than Kirk? Are the Kelvin-verse movies fun popcorn movies or Star Wars in a Trek skin? Is there too much crying in Star Trek: Discovery? But for all of their disagreements, nearly all Star Trek fans can unite around their feelings about season one of Star Trek: The Next Generation: it stinks.
Turns out, those opinions are shared by the Tng cast. Over thirty-five years later, the cast has completed six more mostly great seasons of the series, four movies of varying quality, and an excellent reunion season of Star Trek: Picard, but they still look back in embarrassment at their first voyage on the starship Enterprise.

A franchise that’s producing as much as “Star Trek” is right now shouldn’t be this good.
A year ago, “Strange New Worlds” debuted and delivered the best first season of a “Trek” show since “The Original Series.” Then “Picard” ended on a soaring and soulful note, leaving fans desperate for more. The final scenes of "Star Trek: Picard" saw Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) commanding the newly christened Enterprise-g (previously the Titan-a), taking her ship out on a brand new exploratory mission, exhilaratingly adding to the "Star Trek" legacy. Her first officer was her ex-girlfriend Commander Musiker (Michelle Hurd), and the ship is being piloted by Ensign La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) Geordi's daughter. Notably, Jean-Luc Picard's son Jack (Ed Speleers) sat at the captain's left hand serving as her special council.
Just before leaping to warp, the crew turns to their captain in expectation, wondering how she's going to give the order to activate the engines. Picard previously said "Engage" on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," as well as "Make it so." Other captains have adopted other dramatic phrases such as "Let's punch it" (Pike in the 2009 "Star Trek" film) or "I would like the ship to go.

It seems like Jean-Luc Picard never learns. At the end of the Star Trek: The Next Generation finale “All Good Things…”, the Captain finally joins his senior officers of the USS Enterprise for a game of cards. “I should have done this a long time ago,” he admits with some resignation.
But when the Captain returned to screens for Star Trek: Picard, after a twenty-year absence following the dismal final Tng movie Star Trek: Nemesis, he didn’t bring his old crew with him. Sure, Data, Riker, and Troi dropped by for an episode or two, but Picard spent most of his time with a new renegade gang. It wasn’t until Picard hit its third and final season that the Captain was rejoined by his most famous crew.

This story about “Picard” originally appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In 1994, after its seventh and final season, “Star Trek: The Next Generation” was nominated for its lone Best Drama Series Emmy. Patrick Stewart, who anchored the show as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, remembers the nomination well. It was the same year he got a SAG Award nomination.
“Those two were the only two (above-the-line) nominations that we got,” Stewart said. “Next Generation” was nominated for several Creative Arts Emmys—for crafts like makeup, cinematography, sound mixing and more—but was otherwise consistently overlooked. “The fact that Brent Spiner was never acknowledged in that way for his extraordinary work playing an android for seven seasons. And Jonathan (Frakes) and LeVar (Burton) and Marina (Sirtis). We got used to it. We knew there was going to be no acknowledgment…until the very last season.” Which is exactly what happened.

Actor Gates McFadden has been a part of the "Star Trek" franchise for decades, but "Star Trek: Picard" provided a career first for the performer. While she had fun making friends with her castmates and getting to spend time aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, she felt that her character, Dr. Beverly Crusher, was frequently given short shrift when it came to the writing on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." On "Tng," both Crusher and the ship's counselor, Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), were often given very little to do other than exercise in tight-fitting outfits or offer a bit of expertise from their respective fields. "Star Trek: Picard," however, finally gave them both a chance to have some real character growth and show off their acting skills.

There was an epilogue at the end of "Star Trek: Picard" that was set a year after the events of the season's climax. In it, Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), had already graduated from Starfleet Academy, having been placed on an accelerated educational track (the Academy is typically a four-year program). Already in uniform and bearing the rank of ensign, Jack was ready to be posted to his first starship. It was implied that Jack would be stationed on the U.S.S. Titan-a, the ship on which most of the final season's action took place.
While Jack was indeed stationed on board the Titan-a, there was a cute nostalgic twist for viewers. Just for funsies, Starfleet decided to rechristen the Titan-a as the Enterprise-g. Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) was to be the Enterprise-g's captain, and her ex-girlfriend Raffi (Michelle Hurd) was to be her first officer.

Joining the cast of "Star Trek: Picard" in its third season could be one seriously intimidating thing, as the core cast has worked together and known one another for more than 30 years. But English actor Ed Speleers found himself right at home. The performer plays Jack Crusher, the son of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), making him the one who could possibly carry the torch for the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" into the next generation. Thankfully, Speleers fit into the cast and world of "Star Trek" like he had belonged there all along, bringing a swashbuckling roguishness that "Picard" was lacking. But what was it like for Speleers personally, joining such an esteemed crew and being a part of such a monumental part of their story? About the same!

Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard” is an homage to a generation of ’90s “Trek” fans who followed the seven-season and four-movie heroics of the “Next Generation” crew of the USS Enterprise. It offers a master class to holders of similarly valuable IP in how to delight fans both old and new. And in today’s crowded and highly competitive streaming landscape, it should offer a powerful incentive for Paramount to give fans more of what they want.
“Star Trek: Picard” is the most successful “Star Trek” show streaming today, according to viewership data from Samba TV. Not only did the Season 3 premiere perform well for Paramount+, topping the Season 4 premiere of “Star Trek Discovery” by more than 40%, but momentum built week after week as showrunner Terry Matalas and colleagues reintroduced a delightful cadence of familiar fan-favorite characters with each episode.

Season 3 of "Star Trek: Picard" is full of big emotions, which is no surprise considering it reconnects the cast from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" after decades for one last hurrah. It also, however, turned out to be pretty emotional for one of its new stars.
Ed Speleers, who plays Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dr. Beverly Crusher's (Gates McFadden) adult son, Jack Crusher, also found himself being emotionally affected by the sentimental storytelling. The third season takes a new direction under showrunner Terry Matalas, focusing on Picard's legacy and the complicated relationships between parents and their children. Just as Picard had to reconcile his traumatic past with his parents' pain during his upbringing, Jack has to reckon with the fact that his father is one of the most important people in the whole galaxy.

“It was not going to be this.”
Terry Matalas doesn’t mince words about the difficulty of getting the “Next Generation” band back together for Season 3 of “Star Trek: Picard.” In fact, when he came onboard as showrunner prior to the second season, there was no plan for a reunion of the beloved Enterprise-D crew (nor an appearance from the ship itself).
“Because that was not the show they had set out to make,” he added in a new interview with IndieWire, alongside production designer Dave Blass. “‘Picard’ was the deconstruction of Jean-Luc Picard, and it had a new cast, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
Matalas knew, though, that bringing back the full “Next Generation” cast for one final adventure — after their voyages came to a thud of an end with 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis” — would be electric if it happened.
He made it so.

The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" was full of Easter eggs and good old-fashioned nostalgia, but it turns out that one Easter egg might actually be a hint at things to come.
In season 3, episode 6 of "Picard" (which is titled "The Bounty"), Worf (Michael Dorn), Raffi (Michelle Hurd), and Riker (Jonathan Frakes) break into Daystrom Institute's underground warehouse to try and retrieve what remains of Data (Brent Spiner). While they're there, they see a few interesting items taken by Starfleet Intelligence, including an attack tribble and the body of one James Tiberius Kirk. We don't actually get to see Kirk, of course, just his X-ray and some basic information about him. Still, it's pretty wild to know that Starfleet went and got his body off of Veridian III (where we last saw him at the end of "Star Trek Generations").

The bulk of the final season of "Star Trek: Picard" took place on board the U.S.S. Titan-a, a ship commanded by Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick) and with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) as its first officer. The Titan-a was called a Neo-Constitution-Class starship, having been reconstructed using a lot of old parts from the original Titan (a ship commanded by Captain Riker). The ship has a blocky, utilitarian look, with a semicircular saucer section. The ship's look fitted the personality of its captain; Shaw was a former engineer and adhered strictly to safety and protocol. He had no patience for "gut instincts" and doing favors for the visiting Admiral Picard (Patrick Stewart).
By the end of the series, Captain Shaw will have died -- a grievous tragedy indeed -- and the Titan will have survived a great number of near-misses and battle scenarios. After all was said and done,...

If you follow “Star Trek” on Twitter and other social media spaces, you’d think that “Star Trek: Legacy” is a real show, given all the buzz surrounding it. A Change.org petition to have Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas helm the proposed spin-off is closing in on 50,000 signatures, which would change it’s status on the site to “top signed.”
But alas, “Legacy” isn’t on the current or future “Trek” slate. And with the current Writers’ Guild strike, it doesn’t look likely in the near future. But never count out the power of the “Star Trek” fandom, which has supported the franchise for nearly six decades, including fallow periods of no television or theatrical production.
Here’s what you need to know about “Legacy” and why “Trek” fans and stars are clamoring for it.

One of the central plot conceits of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard" was that Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) had finally had a love affair after seven seasons of toying with the idea on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Their fling, it turns out, wasn't what either of them wanted, and after a night of wild passion, their relationship fell apart for good. Naturally, the pair begat a child that Dr. Crusher never told Jean-Luc about, making their reunion twenty-some years later a little awkward. To the credit of showrunner Terry Matalas, the two characters do not immediately feel warm and nostalgic when they meet; there is still a great deal of bitterness lingering.
The third season of "Picard" lasted a scant ten episodes, leaving little time to develop Picard and Beverly's relationship. By the end of the series, they seemed to have cleared the air,...

In the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Trials and Tribble-ations", Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) and several other members of the "DS9" crew had to travel back in time to avert a crisis. It seems a time-traveling assassin had inserted himself into the events of the original series "Star Trek" episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" and Sisko had to go undercover next to Captain Kirk (William Shatner) to prevent a bomb from blowing up. Using revolutionary special effects technology, Sisko, Dax (Terry Farrell), Dr. Bashir (Alexander Siddig), and others were inserted rather seamlessly into an episode that was shot 30 years prior. It was a novelty for "Star Trek," and one of the few times the franchise revisited its past in such a manner.

The primary function of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard" was to activate the nostalgia glands of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" fans. Showrunner Terry Matalas constructed a story that was centered very specifically on uniting Patrick Stewart with Jonathan Frakes, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, and Gates McFadden. Additionally, the series created a plot conceit that allowed for the reconstruction of the Enterprise-d, the "Next Generation" ship that was destroyed in "Star Trek: Generations" in 1994. In the show's penultimate episode, the entire cast strode on board an impeccably recreated Enterprise-d bridge set and took the same stations they once occupied decades previously. Was it a contrived, corny moment? Yes. Did it stab many Trekkies directly in the wistfulness part of their brains? Also yes.
The cast also appreciated the reunion, as they hadn't all been gathered since the production of "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002. Several...

The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" was carefully constructed by showrunner Terry Matalas to reunite the central cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and gather them on the bridge of the Enterprise-d. Some of the introductions felt fair and organic. Others felt a little contrived. The inclusion of the Enterprise-d, a ship that had been destroyed in 1994's "Star Trek: Generations," was most certainly forced. But for many, the nostalgia was exhilarating, and seeing a 105-year-old Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) back in action for one last Borg rescue was a thrilling way to end the character's career.
Amid all the nostalgia, however, Matalas managed to introduce a fun, exciting new character into the mix: Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), the captain of the U.S.S. Titan-a.
Shaw was thrilling because, unlike most starship captains, he felt no impulse to stand on formality. "Star Trek," especially "Next Generation" was always stringently formal.

"Star Trek: Picard" is over and done with, and the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" has had one final adventure together. Showrunner Terry Matalas even contrived a way to get Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Brent Spiner, Marina Sirtis, and Jonathan Frakes back on board the destroyed Enterprise-d. It seems that Geordi La Forge (Burton) had salvaged what he could from Veridian III, and had spent the last few decades rebuilding the Galaxy-class vessel in his spare time. The aging crew fell right back into place, operating their old ship with skill and alacrity. Personally, I hope I'm never asked to return to an old job decades later and be expected to remember anything, but the Enterprise crew are most assuredly smarter than me.

Spoilers for Star Trek: Picard. Consider yourself warned. The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard recently wrapped up and, in my opinion, was an absolutely wonderful finale for the beloved characters of The Next Generation. It also set the stage for another new show, which Picard showrunner Terry Matalas has dubbed Star Trek: Legacy.

“Star Trek: Picard” wrapped on Thursday with a touching scene between Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and their son Jack (Ed Speleers).
Warning: This post contains spoilers from the series finale of “Star Trek: Picard” titled “The Last Generation.” Proceed with caution.
A year after saving the Federation from the Borg (again), Beverly and Jean-Luc are in a shuttle accompanying Jack on his first Starfleet field posting (think of it as two proud parents dropping their son off at college).
It’s a touching family moment that is heightened when Picard realizes Jack has been posted to the newly christened U.S.S. Enterprise-g.

It must be intimidating for any actor to enter the fold of "Star Trek." In addition to the risk of being pigeonholed (Brent Spiner has spoken at length about that phenomenon), there is a lot to know beforehand. Given the franchise's vast history, and the hundreds of hours of drama it has already produced, it seems that some homework might be required just to have some context of whatever scene you might be acting in.
The former aspect was a bugaboo for Ed Speleers, the actor cast as Jack Crusher in the third season of "Star Trek: Picard." Jack Crusher wasn't some mere ensign written to sit at a starship's helm and read lines about diverting power from life support to the shields or whatever. Jack Crusher was the son of Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), two of the main characters of "Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Not only did we end once again with Picard playing cards with his old friends, something he did a long time ago, but a still-living Q appears to Jack Crusher, announcing a new trial for humanity.
But as satisfying as the finale certainly was, showrunner Terry Matalas originally had in mind something even vaster, bringing together the old and the new in an unexpected way. Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in “The Last Generation,” the series finale of “Star Trek: Picard,” currently streaming on Paramount+.
The last time the cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” cast performed together on screen — in 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis” — ended with a sour one-two punch: the sudden death of Data (Brent Spiner) and the financial failure of the film, which caused Paramount to stop making movies with the cast. Effectively, after a brilliantly successful seven-season run on TV, “The Next Generation” had been canceled from movie theaters.
Two decades later, when Terry Matalas was tapped to executive produce the final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” the lifelong “Trek” fan knew that he not only wanted to bring back the full “Tng” cast, but provide them with the swan song they had never received.
“I wanted it to feel like a proper send-off in the way...

It’s been a rough season for Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine.
Viewers learned at the beginning of “Picard” Season 3 that she was assigned to the U.S.S. Titan under a commanding officer who distrusts her so much he calls her by her human name Annika Hansen instead of Seven of Nine.
That captain, Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick) even throws Seven under the bus when Starfleet Intelligence comes on board, claiming she helped Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Riker (Jonathan Frakes) steal a shuttlecraft.
Over the course of the season, Shaw slowly learns to trust his first officer, but sadly, he is killed in the penultimate episode helping Picard and company flee the Titan after it is assimilated.
With his dying breath, Shaw tells her “You have the conn, Seven of Nine,” finally calling her by her preferred name. With that, she takes command of the Titan, even though the ship,...

This post contains spoilers for season 3 of "Star Trek: Picard."
Once upon a time, fans of Brent Spiner's character Data from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" thought they would never get to see their favorite humanist android in live-action ever again, but the third season of "Star Trek: Picard" changed all of that. The character had already appeared in the series' first season and had given Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) his final goodbye before apparently dying for good, and Spiner was adamant that he had no intention of ever donning a Starfleet uniform again. Somehow, however, "Picard" season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas convinced Spiner to come back for one more go-round in outer space, giving fans the chance to see him interact with the whole gang from "Next Generation" one last time.
So how did Matalas convince the esteemed actor to don the uniform (and makeup) one last time? It...
