If you’re a Republican politician looking to score points with Donald Trump, there’s a decent chance you’ve been spotted recently in or outside Manhattan Criminal Court. U.S. senators, House members, state attorneys general, and former GOP presidential primary opponents have all traveled to New York to support the former president during his criminal trial.
Trump has publicly complained that the Maga faithful haven’t descended on the court in droves, blaming law enforcement for restricting access to the area for blocks, which is false. Privately, he...

Don’t miss a captivating new episode of ABC’s 20/20 titled “Forever 17,” airing on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 9 p.m. Et/8 p.m. Ct. This two-hour special dives deep into a haunting cold case that gripped the small city of Ozark, Alabama, for over two decades.
In 1999, the community was shattered by the brutal murder of two 17-year-old girls, Tracie Hawlett and J.B. Beasley, whose bodies were discovered in the trunk of a car. Their deaths remained a mystery until a breakthrough in 2019 linked Coley McCraney to the crimes through DNA evidence obtained via a family genealogy website. McCraney, a local truck driver and preacher with no prior criminal record, was subsequently arrested and charged with capital murder.
The episode unfolds the intense narrative from the night of the murders to the recent trial and sentencing, where McCraney was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Featuring exclusive...

Death row inmate Kenneth Smith of Alabama was put to death on Thursday. His execution was carried out using a new method involving nitrogen hypoxia.
Alabama’s Attorney General Steve Marshall (R) commented on the new method, claiming, “What occurred last night was textbook,” during a press conference on Friday. “And I now suspect that many states will follow. As of last night, nitrogen hypoxia as a means of execution is no longer an untested method. It is a proven one.”
Smith was sentenced to death in 1988 for his involvement in a murder-for-hire case. The case resulted in the death of Elizabeth Sennett, a preacher’s wife. Execution by lethal injection for Smith was scheduled for November 2022. However, officials could not carry it out successfully, thus delaying the execution.

Fully one-third of U.S. states have election deniers in some of the highest positions overseeing elections. That’s according to a new report from States United Democracy Center highlighted by Mother Jones.
Although many election deniers lost their races in the 2022 midterms, States United, a non-partisan organization, found that a total of 23 election deniers now hold statewide office positions that give them influential oversight over elections in 17 different states. This includes seven governors, five secretaries of state, and 11 attorneys general.
In the state of Alabama, election deniers hold all three of those powerful positions.

There is virtually no ambiguity in Alabama law: Abortion is banned at any stage of pregnancy, and anyone who performs one can be charged with a felony. But there is one caveat: Under current law, a pregnant person cannot be criminally charged in connection with her own abortion.
A group of Republican lawmakers in the Alabama House of Representatives are angling to change that. A new bill, sponsored by freshman Ernie Yarbrough, would open the door for a pregnant person to be charged with murder if she has an abortion...

“All in the Family” was notable for many things — including the fact that it spawned seven other TV series. The influential sitcom was controversial when it first aired on 50 years ago on Jan. 12, 1971, and it went on to confront numerous issues that hadn’t previously been portrayed on television. The show’s spin-off series continued to break boundaries with discussions of abortion, alcoholism and racism. The characters and mood set by “All in the Family” left a big mark on television history, including these seven spin-offs:
“Maude” (1972-78)
The title character, played by Bea Arthur, was a tall, ultra-liberal feminist who drove Archie crazy; she was introduced in as Edith’s cousin in two “All in the Family” episodes in the 1971-72 season.
The two-part season opener for “Maude” in 1973 dealt with the alcoholism of her husband Walter (Bill Macy). Variety said it “underscored that sitcoms this year are treading...

Fred Dekker, the writer and director of the 1986 horror film Night of the Creeps, is planning a sequel that will bring back the original cast! That cast of the original film includes Jason Lively, Steve Marshall, Jill Whitlow, Allan Kayser, and Tom Atkins.
The news about Night of the Creeps 2 came from Tom Atkins during an interview with JoBlo. He said:
“I would like to see Detective Ray Cameron become resurrected somehow. And Fred Dekker and I, every time we see each other, we talk about that. And he's determined to do a sequel with the three kids and myself. I mean they're no longer kids, they're all in their 50's, but they're all still kicking and healthy and looking good. I would love to do that again. I love Detective Ray Cameron.”

Fred Dekker, writer and director of this fun-loving and enjoyably-daft B-movie homage, had a strangely short career as a director. Oddly though, he is responsible for two films that I, and many others, really love. Night of the Creeps being one of them, and the other one being a Halloween-staple for me, 1987’s The Monster Squad. Dekker wrote the script in just a week for this film, and it is a good script that in many ways feels ahead of its time. It’s quite unusual how little credit Dekker has received for his work (his only other feature film is Robocop 3) because two of his films are cult favourites, and truly entertaining slices of horror fun. A definite inspiration to many similar films that would follow through the years,...

Where do I even begin talking about my love for Night of the Creeps? Writer/director Fred Dekker, a monster kid from way back, was a successful screenwriter when he got to finally direct a movie. He was only about 26 at the time, but the movie plays like the work of a guy who has waited his entire life to make a movie. He packs it top to bottom with all the things he loves and includes every shot he's dreamed of composing, from the Jaws zoom in/dolly out to the first appearance of hard-boiled Tom Atkins, shot from a high angle looking down through a ceiling fan. He doesn't direct Night of the Creeps like he's trying to prove something; he directs it like he's only going to get one chance to make a movie and...

Night Of The Creeps screens Midnights this weekend (March 9th and 10th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Nite Grindhouse film series.
Writer/director Fred Dekker’s Night Of The Creeps is all about little, parasitic aliens that take over human bodies and turn them into deadly zombies. This is a big pain in the backside for Chris Romero (Jason Lively), who is finally getting a chance to woo Cynthia (Jill Whitlow), a girl he has fallen in love with. With gruff Detective Cameron (Tom Atkins) trying to figure out what’s going on as bodies start to, apparently, wander off on their own it’s not long until the living have to band together to keep the living dead at bay.

It’s very exciting to see ambition in the world of horror. Yes, pleasure can and always will be derived from one more well formed slice of the blade or swing of the axe. However, occasionally a filmmaker comes on the scene overflowing with imagination and verve, a need to spew forth fresh ideas, or at the very least, a new take on a haggard trope. And then you have Fred Dekker, who decided for his first feature to include everything he loved about exploitation, horror and sci-fi, into one glorious, hearty stew that bafflingly flew under the radar at the time of its release. And like a good stew, the more it simmers, the sweeter the taste. 30 years later, Night of the Creeps (1986) will fill you up and have you begging for more.

If you haven’t seen Fred Dekker’s Night of the Creeps, you should get on that immediately. It’s a super-fun and completely over-the-top undead fest that combines classic ‘50s sci-fi elements and ‘80s gore - including aliens, evil slugs, zombies, sororities, and Tom Atkins. While the different plot points might seem at odds in the hands of another filmmaker, Dekker combines them perfectly into a film that is, much like his later films The Monster Squad and yes, Robocop 3, a love letter to his favorite movies.
The story follows Chris Romero and his best-friend J.C. as they attempt to win the attention of Chris’s crush, Cynthia Cronenberg, but instead end up re-animating a slug-filled corpse and spreading a zombie slug plague around campus. I can’t get into the finer points of the plot, because I can spend hours on the zombie cat, and I really...

Dance of The Dead may seem like another lowbrow, low budget horror film, but in fact, it offers sharp writing, terrific characterizations, likeable performances, and a real affection for geek culture. Imagine the humour of Night of the Living Dorks but powered by the central plot behind Night of the Creeps. Sure Dance uses every rule from the official zombie handbook, but for a movie that seems equally inspired by a John Hughes coming of age flick, Dance of the Dead...

With the release of Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies, I decided to compile a list of my favourite films that take a non-traditional approach to the living-dead canon. More specifically, they all blend romance and zombies, in their own unique and twisted ways.
This is the first of what will be a two part article.

The prior four articles of the good and ugly in comedy horror, all of it was in the run down to this final part. We’ve looked at Frank Henenlotter, Joe Dante, and an unfathomable number of pratfalls, puns, sarcastic one liners and gore, gore, gore. If you’re favourite comedy horror hasn’t appeared, tell us what it is in the comments section below. Maybe a variation on this article will appear in 12 months with some of those omissions included.

Wallace & Gromit And The Curse Of The Were-rabbit
Wallace & Gromit made their debut feature length with one of best horror homages in many a year. Maybe that’s a biased viewpoint as a Brit, Wallace and his pet dog can do no wrong on these shores.

The latest list in sound of sights month long look at the greatest horror films ever is taking a different look on the horror genre. There is a very narrow line that divides finding something funny and scary, which is exactly the sort of film this list is celebrating. As a genre there is two ways you can address the comedy horror. The first and the much more popular route is comedy about horror, these films rarely attempt to attain any qualities other than a comedic jibe at the genre. If you were to pick one classic example it would be Young Frankenstein – a film that satirises early horror and Frankenstein in what is close to comedy perfection (the Gene Wilder effect). The contemporary take on the genre has given the world some of the worst films of recent times in the Scary Movie franchise and its brood of mutant off-shoots.

Prepping to do a 25th Anniversary tribute to Night of the Creeps is a dream come true. While every film I have done a retrospective on has been a labor of love, Night of the Creeps is one of my favorites, and I felt pressure to do it right and knock it out of the park. I have never done a dual interview, so this was an opportunity to do something really special. Thankfully, director Fred Dekker and actress Jill Whitlow are as gonzo about the movie as the fans, and they were more than happy to sit down and talk up one of the finest Late Night Classics of all-time.
You can ready my retrospective with Jill Whitlow on Twice Dead here.
Jason Bene: How did you write such an amazing script in such a short period of time?

Night Of The Creeps
Directed by Fred Dekker
Screenplay by Fred Dekker
1986, USA
The debut feature by writer/director Fred Dekker is notable as an earnest attempt at a B-movie and a throwback to the genre. Paying tribute to everything from plots, themes and to the filmmakers that created them, Night offers alien parasites, zombies, extra-terrestrials, a sorority house, Prom Night and a 50′s opening prologue involving an axe murder. Dekker goes so far as to pay tribute to his idols by naming every character after a famous filmmaker. There is the love interest, Cynthia Cronenberg, a police sergeant named Raimi, three other characters named Miller, Carpenter, Landis and of course, Detective Cameron, played by Tom Atkins.
Atkins steals the show, delivering the film’s most memorable lines including the classic: ‘I got good news and bad news, girls. The good news is your dates are here. The bad news is they’re dead.

Bruce Campbell is reportedly planning a horror equivalent of The Expendables. If this is the case, who would star in it, and what gory events would take place? Here are Duncan’s suggestions…
Now, news that Bruce Campbell is reportedly planning a horror equivalent of The Expendables is, in itself, enough to make me want to proclaim that the world is a beautiful place, filled with beautiful things, as merely putting just Bruce Campbell in a film is normally enough to get me to watch it. But, let's all calm down for a minute and look a bit closer at the facts.
In a recent interview with the La Times, Mr Campbell was asked about his concept for taking Bruce Vs. Frankenstein (a sequel to 2007's My Name Is Bruce) and making it 'The Expendables of horror'. His reply was: "Yeah, The Expendables, or more like the It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World...

Back in August 1986, two horror movies debuted on the same Friday in New York-area theaters. The film that got more publicity, and that most of the genre fans I knew wanted to see, was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. But one pal and I were more interested in checking out the one that promised a “Free Creep Prevention Mask” to the first patrons on opening night.
So we paid our admission, were each handed a paper surgical mask with the Night Of The Creeps logo emblazoned on it, took our seats—and enjoyed one of the year’s most surprisingly entertaining fright features, one that homaged practically every subgenre imaginable, yet kept a sure hand on its tone and never descended into spoofery. Those who caught Creeps in its limited theatrical run (during which it played a few cities as Homecoming Night) formed the beginnings of a cult following that...

Horror fans are living in good times. Not because of the glut of remakes and sequels that are permeating our theaters, but because some of our childhood favorites are being revisited, cleaned up and repackaged for the DVD and Blu-Ray formats. Speaking for myself, but I'm sure you'll agree, next to The Monster Squad - which we saw released last year as a special edition presentation - I was clamoring to see Fred Dekker's other '80s cult classic Night of the Creeps resurrected on anything other than my worn-out VHS tape. The wait is over. This week, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases Dekker's space slug/zombie flick starring Tom "thrill me" Atkins, Jason Lively and Steve Marshall - on DVD and Blu-Ray thanks to the same man who brought The Monster Squad DVD to...

I remember seeing Night Of The Creeps when it was released in 1986. I hadn’t seen the trailer and didn’t know anything about the movie, but a friend invited me at the last minute, and, hey, being 11 at the time, any chance to see an R-rated horror movie was an opportunity I would never pass up. While first-time writer-director Fred Dekker’s Sf-horror pastiche bombed at the box office and quickly left theaters, I Loved the film. I watched it a few times afterward when it showed up on cable, but I haven’t seen Night Of The Creeps in nearly 20 years. So when I heard that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment was releasing a Director’s Cut of the film on DVD ($19.95; also Blu-ray $24.95), I couldn’t wait to revisit it, but I was trepidatious about how it has aged over the years. Well, Night Of The Creeps is...

The 1986 film, a true work of art has been one of the most demanded DVD releases. The story behind Night Of The Creeps is almost as interesting as the film itself: writer-director Fred Dekker decided to spend seven days writing a script. If he could not finish the script in that time limit, he'd toss it into the garbage. Thankfully he was able to finish this gem before the week was up. I've been waiting a long time for a DVD release of Fred Dekker's cult classic Night of the Creeps... in fact, it's one of the few movies I still actually own on VHS. When The Monster Squad was finally released back in 2007, it looked like Notc would follow soon after, but it's taken another two years for Sony to get their act together. At long last, a release date of October 10th has been set, and it's now currently up for pre-order on Amazon [1]. Ever cooler is the fact that in addition to pre-ordering, you can also vote for your favourite DVD cover [2]. Unfortunately, the three choices that they have available aren't all that fantastic. I know that they're going for an old school horror look, but these just look like bargain bin titles to me. At any rate, if you're a fan of Night of the Creeps, you...
