It’s always an added bonus when a horror film does something a bit different. Whether it’s a concept or just a setting, the ability to differentiate oneself can sometimes make a real difference. Such is the case with Death of Me, which could easily be described as “The Hangover but horror” in broad strokes, but also adds in the locale of an island paradise. The end result is a fright flick that’s sometimes hit or miss, but does just enough right to warrant a mild recommendation. Out today, it’s an effective way to begin to get into the scary spirit of Halloween. The movie is a horror offering, of course. Taking a relaxing vacation on a small island off the coast of Thailand, husband and wife Neil (Luke Hemsworth) and Christine (Maggie Q) are initially having a wonderful time. On the final day of their trip,...

Vacationing couple Neil and Christine wake up from a heavy night’s boozing on a remote Thai island to find their passports missing and their memories largely blank. No clarity is forthcoming when Neil checks his phone’s photos from the night before, only to find an extended video in which he has rough sex with his wife, before strangling her to death and burying her in a shallow grave. The premise of “Death of Me” is the kind of tidily absurd “whoa, wut” pitch that Charlie Kaufman’s fictitious hack brother Donald might have dreamed up in “Adaptation”: It sounds at once stupidly intriguing and intriguingly stupid, but it has our attention either way. As handled by sometime “Saw”-meister Darren Lynn Bousman, this attractively mounted B-horror maintains that lurid, grabby quality even as its already sketchy ideas devolve into dubious, incoherent exotica.

The Dead Don’t Die: Bousman Weathers a Storm in Slow Burn Genre
There’s no predicting what to expect from Darren Lynn Bousman, other than we’re likely to see another facet of his flair for genre, and such is the case with his latest venture, Death of Me, a glossy throwback to tourist terror traps which proves to be his most polished film to date.
As penned by three scribes, it’s a hodgepodge of tropes, borrowing from the tech terrors of J-horror and the cult ceremonies of Robin Hardy which features some interesting twists and turns unfortunately dulled by straitjacketing everything into the perspective of rather unlikeable and privileged Western tourists.…...

The words faith and belief have been distorted beyond recognition these past couple decades, if not longer. They used to signify a person’s innate ability to trust in the unknown and now they’re used to refute the known. People say they “believe” a faulty opinion that blatantly rejects empirical fact as though they have the power to disagree a proven truth from existence. They “believe” climate change isn’t real (it is). They “believe” wearing masks doesn’t combat the spread of Covid-19 (it does). They hide beyond the auspices of “faith” in order to avoid ever having to admit they’re wrong. “Wrong” no longer exists to them. And the more we allow the conversation to change into my “right” against your “right,” truth will eventually die.

Saban Films has picked up the distribution rights to director Darren Lynn Bousman’s new horror film Death of Me, which stars Maggie Q and Luke Hemsworth.
Bousman has directed a lot of horror movies in his career such as several Saw films (including the new one), Repo! The Genetic Opera, and The Devil’s Carnival. I’ve enjoyed watching many of his films, and this next one of his sounds like it’ll be good.
The story for the movie centers on “a couple on an exotic holiday who awaken one morning with a hangover and no recollection of what transpired. When playing back the video of their previous night, they learn they participated in a ritual that somehow ended with the husband murdering the wife — though she’s actually very much alive.”
Well, that sounds like fun! It’s like a satanic horror filled version of The Hangover.

You sci-fi fans sure are a crafty crowd! Responding to Fox and Almost Human's invite to remake the show's extended trailer, droves of viewers submitted their Diy renditions that varied in style, sophistication and, honestly, visual success. Now, the best bits of the batch have been patched together into a full-length clip that plays like a scene-for-scene substitute for the original cinematic promo created by Ari Margolis of Fox's Special Ops marketing brain trust. Just be warned: Some of this stuff is Almost too funny to take in with a single viewing.

Fans of Fringe have longed for an Astrid-centric episode. One that let the character -- and the actress -- take center stage.
There have been glimmers of it over and over again, but nothing that compares to tonight's outing since it not only shines a spotlight on Astrid but also alternate Astrid. Yes that's right, the divine Jasika Nicole enters an elite club of Fringe stars who've acted opposite themselves on-screen.
I caught up with Jasika earlier this week to find out what it felt like for Astrid to finally get her duo due, what she's heard about when the series might come to an end and how she plans to keep Astrid alive long after Fringe comes to a close.

Fringe: J.J. Abrams Wants to Direct an Episode in Season 5
J.J. Abrams operates in a way that's similar to the deists' perception of God. He simply creates something, winds up the spring, and lets it go how it will. Sometimes, as with Undercovers, the clockwork is wound too tight and it breaks. But Abrams has a tendency, as he did with Lost, to wind things up just right, and then step away. He did the same thing with Fox's Fringe, one of the most creatively brilliant shows on television right now.
In a video released by Fox on Thursday, Abrams chats with Fringe marketing special ops Ari Margolis about why exactly he loves the show that he helped to create, pointing out how the show is a wonderful mix of the scary and the heartfelt, pointing to Walter Bishop (John Noble) as a prime example.

Fringe Loses Fox 'A Lot of Money,' Cancellation Seems Likely
Well, Fringe fans, it's looking more and more clear that season four will be the final season of the sci-fi drama. The series returns on Friday, January 13, with an all new (fantastic) episode, but upon its return, we might be looking down the barrel toward the series finale.
That's despite the efforts of Fox president Kevin Reilly, a self-proclaimed Fringe fanatic. At the TCA today, he called his efforts to keep the show on air "a point of pride," though he acknowledged that it was much more difficult to justify another renewal for the series. "We lose a lot of money on that show," he confirmed. "At that rating, on that night [Fridays], it’s impossible to make money… and we’re not in the business of losing money.”
So does that mean that Fringe is cancelled? Well, not yet,...

J.J. Abrams Talks Alcatraz in New Video
Fans of J.J. Abrams should definitely check out Alcatraz, the new show from one of the sci-fi gods of today. Alcatraz premieres Monday, January 16, on Fox. Having seen the first episode, I can tell you that the pilot of this show is strikingly similar to the pilot of Fringe in terms of quality and tone. It is a little uneven, like Fringe's pilot was, but it's still got the potential to turn into a truly great sci-fi series.
J.J. Abrams, in this new video released by Fox, sits down to chat with Ari Margolis (the wizard behind Fringe's great online marketing). In the video, Abrams discusses his fascination with the titular island, and gives a bit of a rundown on what the series will comprise of from week to week. Each new episode will feature on another inmate who disappeared fifty...

Voodoo. You know it. You love it. You need more movies with it in them. Thankfully that's exactly what's on the way as Radar Pictures has come onboard to produce horror-thriller Spell from the writing team of Ari Margolis and James Morley III.
According to Variety Spell centers on a young couple who wake up with no memory of the first night of their tropical vacation. As they piece together the events of the night before, they discover they were the victims of a sadistic voodoo ritual, spurring a desperate quest for a cure for the horrific illness now afflicting them.
Margolis and Morley have previously written and directed Black Days, nominated for the grand jury prize at Slamdance. They are currently attached to direct supernatural thriller The Dead of Winter, which they also wrote.

Fringe Teaser Promises Everything Will Become Clear in January
Fringe is coming back in January, and we're going with it to the Other Side. The show's fourth season went to hiatus last Friday with "Wallflower," a standalone episode that was great but wasn't midseason finale material. As it turns out, that's because the World Series pushed the real midseason finale, "Back to Where You've Never Been" to January 13, meaning that it will serve as the midseason premiere instead. As such, Fox has a lot of cool trailers for the episode ready to go.
There's one titled "Clear," crafted by Fringe trailer guru Ari Margolis. It's even more action-packed than the one that aired after "Wallflower," which hinted at the return of super-awesome villain David Robert Jones (Jared Harris).
This one features a lot of scenes from the episode itself. Apparently, when Peter travels over to the Other Side, it causes a bit of a ruckus.

You're going to love the next episode of Fringe. Titled "And Those We've Left Behind," the episode is undoubtedly the best of the season so far -- even better than last week's "Novation," which was pretty darn great as well. The episode will guest star Stephen Root (Justified, Office Space), and will deal with the time loop that we got a glimpse at in "Novation."
Fox has shelled out another great promo for the episode, courtesy of advertising special ops Ari Margolis, who's been responsible for pretty much every great Fringe ad in the past few years (and there have been quite a few). The promo's a fast-cut look at the episode, focusing on the scenes featuring Peter. Is he really lounging in a park with Olivia? What's that weird vest thing he's wearing? And what does Olivia mean when she says Peter's the "problem?" You'll just have to tune...

If you're getting ready for the Fringe season 4 premiere, as so many of us are (only a week and a day away!), you'll probably want a little refresher course of the first three seasons. After all, the show's complex mythology is so finely wound together that it's sometimes tough for even the most seasoned Fringe veterans to weave their way through the more intricate story arcs. If you're one of those people who would like to catch up on the broader strokes, though, Fringe: Past + Present + Future is right for you.
Narrated by star John Noble, the web recap series so far consists of ten installments giving details about our heroes' pasts. The series premiered on the web last Friday, and will wrap up on Friday (9/15) with its eleventh and twelfth episodes.
You can check out all ten of the currently released episodes via this YouTube playlist. You can also follow Ari Margolis,...

If you're looking for some Fringe excitement, next week might just be your week. Fox is rolling out a twelve-part video series titled Fringe: Past + Present + Future to lead up to the big event on September 23 -- the season four premiere.
The videos, narrated by star John Noble and crafted by Ari Margolis (the man responsible for all of those awesome Fringe trailers that have been floating around the web), are as close to a recap episode for the series as we're going to get. It's also probably the only place you'll ever hear Walter Bishop and William Bell described as "the Lennon and McCartney of science."
The first two episodes of Past + Present + Future have already been released. Starting Monday, the rest of the episodes will be released at a rate of two a day, with the final installments hitting the web on Friday.

For several weeks, the "Where Is Peter Bishop?" promotional adds have been teasing Fringe fans. We're a month away from the upcoming fourth season of the series, and finally the ads are starting to give us a little bit of a glimpse of what's to come.
We've had previous promos give us glimpses at the season, including a new quote from Walter (John Noble) and a quick shot of Olivia. But the new promo, released on Monday, gives us an in-depth look at just how Olivia (Anna Torv) is coping with the absence of Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson), who was apparently erased from existence at the end of the season three finale.
"We all get really good at pretending that the loneliness isn't there," Olivia tells someone (we can't tell who, but it looks like Lincoln Lee) in the promo. "And then something comes along to remind us. I know...

From Fringe marketing master Ari Margolis comes the second awesome season four promo. Two weeks after the first "Where Is Peter Bishop?" teaser video hit the web, Margolis has released a just-as-taunting second video, but with one major difference: according to FringeBloggers.com, the trailer contains our first image from season 4.
Of course, that clip from season 4 lasts less than a second. It features a quick shot of Olivia walking -- nothing too plot-intensive or even remotely spoilery. Check out that screencap here.
Update: The line at the end of the trailer, September saying "Much has changed...," has been confirmed to be from season 4 as well.
The rest of the trailer -- which features clips from "Peter" and "The Man from the Other Side" -- is pretty neat, giving us a look back at Peter's relationship with Walter. The glimmer effect thrown over the shots from the latter episode is pretty neat,...

Ever since Fox announced it was moving its acclaimed but ratings-challenged sci-fi saga Fringe to Fridays from its current home on Thursday, fans have been blogging and tweeting much pessimism about the show’s chances for survival beyond this season. Friday is one of the least watched TV nights of the week, and in recent years, it hasn’t been too kind to sci-fi series — or at least Fox’s sci-fi series. See: Joss Whedon’s Firefly; Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Fox execs and Fringe’s exec producers have tried to get the word out that the network remains committed to the series,...
