Joe Ely’s new album Driven to Drive is arriving Aug. 2, and leadoff single “Odds of the Blues” features vocals from his longtime buddy, Bruce Springsteen.
The song was inspired by Ely’s time at the late-night bar TV’s in Lubbock, Texas. “There was always a dice game in the back room, the pool table had a bad lean, and the jukebox mainly played old blues songs,” he said in a statement. “I wrote the song later when I put my studio together in Austin. During a recent Emmys FYC conversation in Atlanta with Bmf showrunner Heather Zuhlke, stars Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr., Da’Vinchi, Michole Briana White and Russell Hornsby — who respectively play Big Meech, Terry, and Flenory matriarch and patriarch Lucille and Charles — and executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who had been less active with the network in recent years after several fallouts, was full of pride and commentary about the Starz drama’s current success and future plans.
There’s no denying that Jackson putting his hip hop fame and street cred behind Power, the series essentially about a drug kingpin named Ghost (Omari Hardwick) who wanted to get out the game and become a respectable businessman, changed the premium network’s fortune. Power reportedly increased Starz’s subscribers base by as much as 40 percent.
From that came three successful spinoffs — Power Book II: Ghost; Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Power Book IV: Force.

In Stuart Rosenberg's 1967 prison film "Cool Hand Luke," Lucas Jackson (Paul Newman) is thrown into a Florida penitentiary in the early 1950s for drunkenly cutting the heads off of parking meters. He is sentenced to two years hard labor working on a chain gang, and soon learns that the Floridian penal system is bleak and aggressive. The warden (Morgan Woodward) attempts to use modern, sensitive language to deal with the prisoners ("What we have here is failure to communicate"), but it's a gross juxtaposition given how cruel he is; the warden will give miscreants "a night in the box," a small wooden shack, as punishment for the smallest slights.
Partway through the movie, Luke and his fellow prisoners are taken out to a field next to a remote country home. The prisoners haven't seen a woman for a long time -- some of them in years -- so when...

Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead was one of the most happening shows that graced television long before the author achieved more success with Invincible. Being a comic book first, the show had a slew of plot points that it did not adapt from the comics, which Jeffery Dean Morgan wishes was not the case.

Jeffery Dean Morgan began starring in The Walking Dead as Negan in Season 6, where he was introduced with his trusty weapon, Lucille, the baseball bat wrapped with barbed wire. Morgan talked to CheatSheet about one scene that he wished was adapted into the show from the comics, one that was profoundly important for the character.

"The Love Boat" holds a fascinating place in pop culture history. While most of the shows with reruns playing in heavy rotation today were in some way groundbreaking upon their initial release, "The Love Boat" is a novelty the likes of which modern TV rarely – if ever – tries to emulate. An anthology-like rom-com set aboard a cruise ship, "The Love Boat" featured a revolving door of guest stars and little connective tissue to speak of aside from the cast playing the crew aboard the ship.

Sheriff Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm) is listening to “Sixteen Tons” on the radio while he rolls up to the murder scene/gas station as FX’s Fargo season five episode three gets underway. For once, his son Gator (Joe Keery) has done the right thing by not broadcasting the fact Ole Munch killed his partner and left a menacing sign on his dead body. So far, only Roy’s aware the gas station’s upped its body count by one.
Gator praises Ole Munch’s big balls, and Roy points out Munch has altered the size of Gator’s. They’ve gotten smaller.
Roy orders Gator to dig up all the info he can on Ole Munch. And he warns his son to sleep with his gun cocked until the situation’s handled.

If the thought of life without the Bluths makes you as blue as Tobias’ body paint, take heart: Arrested Development is still streaming on Netflix. The comedy series was scheduled to leave the streaming platform earlier this year, but a last-minute licensing deal means it’s still yours for the bingeing on its 20th anniversary this November 2. Arrested Development ran for three seasons on Fox between 2003 and 2006, telling the story of the dysfunctional Bluth family: Lucille (Jessica Walter) and George Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor); their adult children, Gob (Will Arnett), Michael (Jason Bateman), Lindsay (Portia de Rossi), and Buster (Tony Hale); their son-in-law, Tobias (David Cross); and their grandchildren, George Michael (Michael Cera) and Maeby (Alia Shawkat). The show ran for two seasons on Netflix between 2013 and 2019 — to diminishing returns. All the episodes of the revival are in the bottom 30 percent of IMDb’s fan ranking. On the other end of the ranking,...

Judy Nugent, who portrayed one of the twins on the early TV sitcom The Ruggles and a girl who flies around the world in the arms of the Man of Steel on a heartwarming Adventures of Superman episode, has died. She was 83.
Nugent died on Oct. 26 “surrounded by family at her Montana ranch after a short battle with cancer,” according to a family statement shared by her daughter-in-law and Battlestar Galactica and Chicago Fire actress Anne Lockhart (the older daughter of Lassie and Lost in Space star June Lockhart).

As of now, I think my love for Guillermo Del Toro as a filmmaker is well established. I adore the man and his work. He plays in my favorite sandboxes, with monsters, vampires, kaiju, giant robots, and in the gothic world whenever he feels like it. The man is after my heart with every single movie he makes. In 2015, he went ahead and asked himself, what does this girl love that she hasn’t gotten a whole lot of lately? And he answered with a gothic love story with ghosts in a Hammer-esque setting in a mansion with walls that bleed and memories imbedded in its construction. So, if you didn’t guess from all that, this...

A few familiar faces are missing from Call the Midwife Season 12. The latest season of the long-running BBC drama recently landed on Netflix in the U.S., which means that some fans are just discovering that several beloved characters have left the show. The departures include Fenella Woolgar, who played the cheerful nun Sister Hilda.
Sister Hilda isn’t in ‘Call the Midwife’ Season 12
Woolgar joined the Call the Midwife cast in season 8, which aired in 2019. Her character, Sister Hilda, arrived at Nonnatus House in 1964, and she quickly became an integral part of the close-knit group of nuns and midwives.
Before she joined the religious order, Sister Hilda served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during World War II. During that period in her life, she lived in London’s East End. When she returned to the neighborhood years later as a midwife, she was shocked by the changes she saw.

Buster Bluth could never carry a TV show. The hook-handed mama's boy, Awol private, and Bluth sibling most arrested in his development was simply not main character material. He wasn't even the main character of his own life! How could he be, while caught in the shadow of at least one Lucille? It's difficult to imagine a sitcom built around this runt of the litter, played to maladjusted perfection by Tony Hale. Or it would be, were it not for "Off the Hook," a.ka. the Arrested Development episode that forced fans to imagine that very scenario — to sit through 36 very long minutes of almost nothing but Buster.

In its third season, Only Murders in the Building continues to strive to balance the genuine intrigue of a murder mystery with a light satire of true-crime culture and whodunit clichés. The results are consistently amusing but hardly as riveting as other iterations of this subgenre—including Poker Face and the previous two seasons of Only Murders in the Building.
The show’s unlikely trio of amateur sleuths—washed-up TV star Charles Haden Savage (Steve Martin), disgraced Broadway director Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and rudderless millennial Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez)—had sworn to only investigate murders that take place in their high-end Manhattan apartment complex, but last season’s coda teased a challenge to their agreement: a murder outside the building! If The Walking Dead: Dead City was the kind of series that taught us lessons, the one we were to glean from the Season 1 finale had to be that no good deed goes unpunished. Despite Negan’s best efforts to reunite Maggie with her kidnapped son, the reformed baddie was backstabbed figuratively and frontstabbed literally by the heroine that he so brutally widowed. And the episode’s ending suggested that his punishment was only beginning.

“The Walking Dead: Dead City” continues its run with Episode 4, “Everybody Wins a Prize.” Negan, Maggie and the band of survivors they’ve united with are on the attack. Seeking to reclaim Maggie’s son Hershel from the grasp of the evil Croat (Željko Ivanek), the group devises a plan that involves Negan distracting his former Savior while the rest of them swoop in to rescue Hershel. Housed in an abandoned Madison Square Garden, the Croat’s base of operation makes for a stellar “Walking Dead” villain lair.
Using his signature whistle to lure the Croat deep into the depths of his stadium, Negan engages in a cat-and-mouse sequence as the Croat hunts him down throughout the once lively building. The chase results in a stand-off on a catwalk, with the Croat boasting about the new “Sanctuary” he’s created in the wake of Negan forcing him out of the...

If you thought Negan was poorly handled in the last season of The Walking Dead, you’re in good company, as his portrayer, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, has come out to express disappointment over how the character was written, saying he would have much rather seen him “walk off into the sunset.”

This The Walking Dead: Dead City review contains spoilers.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Episode 1
Picking up where a show left off should be old hat for the creative team behind The Walking Dead: Dead City. After all, The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead did that kind of thing all the time. Every few seasons, when there was a narrative need, they jumped forward in time, scrambled locations and places, and generally reset things as befitted the story they want to tell. As such, the new lives for Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) don’t feel jarring. We’ve already been through at least one or two Maggie reboots at this point; what’s another one?
The story is your basic action movie set-up. Someone’s got her child, in this case a teenage Hershel (Logan Kim), and she’s got to get him back...

Ever since the inception of horror filmmaking, zombies have wandered the Earth. We all know George A. Romero as the Godfather of the Dead, but historians track the first zombies on screen back to 1932’s “White Zombie” starring Bela Lugosi. Before “The Walking Dead” made flesh-munching a source of mainstream cable entertainment, voodoo curses turned the living into dead-eyed shufflers like in Jacques Tourneur’s “I Walked With a Zombie.” Then came the brain feasts, the often debated runners, the contemporary remakes, and Negan’s trusty Lucille.
Film historians can connect the dots between zombie benchmarks that travel at different speeds over decades of releases. Lucky for you, we’re here to rank the 25 best zombie movies to set the record straight. Our list, our rules for inclusion. Let’s slash through the endless horde of zombie titles and see which are left standing as the undefeatables.

This tragic tale of antisemitism in America is often left out of history books, putting pressure on Arden’s production to illuminate the details for a contemporary audience. “I think I’m mostly attracted to shows, and stories, that can help people reexamine the thoughts they have,” notes Arden, “the actions they take.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

This article contains spoilers for season 4, episode 6 of "Succession."
There are quite a few similarities between the Fox and Netflix comedy "Arrested Development" and the HBO tragicomedy "Succession," from the composition of the filthy rich and totally incompetent families at the center of each series to the characters' total inability to be kind to anyone. But there's one major link between them that matters most: the camera work. The plot of "Succession" contains pretty serious stuff, involving drug abuse, accidental manslaughter, accusations of sexual assault on a mass scale, child abuse, and more, but the show still manages to be brutally funny. A big part of that comedy comes from just how awkward and emotionally damaged everyone is, and the camera helps bring that discomfort into focus. Moments that could easily be played as dramatic are instead turned on their ear through the use of the handheld, frequently zooming camera...

Up until now, the Karate Kid franchise has lived on solely through the "Cobra Kai" TV series, but in 2024, it's set to return to the big screen with a brand-new movie. The untitled project will mark the sixth installment in the franchise and will release exactly 40 years after the first Karate Kid film premiered in 1984. The original movie starred Ralph Macchio as a teenager named Daniel Larusso, who learns karate from martial arts master Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) in order to defend himself against a group of bullies, one of whom includes Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Since their rivalry is also at the center of "Cobra Kai," we're left to wonder whether the new film will bring the iconic pair back once more.
In September 2022, Macchio told Entertainment Weekly that he wasn't attached to the project, however, since the movie was still in its early stages, anything could happen. "I...

It’s no secret Amy Slaton-Halterman is a horror fan. She has The Nightmare Before Christmas protagonist Jack Skellington tattooed on her arm. But the 1000-Lb. Find out which characters inspired the TLC star’s two boys Gage and Glenn.
Amy Slaton-Halterman holds Glenn Allen, her second son, in the hospital | TLC Amy and Michael from ‘1000-Lb. Sisters’ have two sons
Michael and Amy eloped in June 2017, but had a more formal wedding ceremony two years later on Mar. 15, 2019. In November 2020, they welcomed their first son, Gage Deon Halterman. He was born on Nov. 10 and will be three years old in 2023.
Shortly thereafter, the TLC star found out she was expecting again. There was a risk of complications with getting pregnant so quickly because of Amy’s gastric bypass surgery.

The first preview of a Broadway revival of Parade — a musical about the lynching of Jewish American Leo Frank in Georgia in 1915 — was disrupted by antisemitic protesters outside the theater Tuesday night, Feb. 21.
The protest, per the Forward, comprised a few people tied to the neo-Nazi group, the National Socialist Movement. They stood outside the theater holding a banner, trying to hand out materials to people waiting in line, and calling Frank a pedophile. Frank was tried, convicted, and later lynched for the alleged murder of a 13-year-old girl, though...

Actor Ben Platt and the producers of the Broadway show “Parade” have responded to the antisemitic protest that took place outside of Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theater Tuesday evening, where Platt is starring in a revival of the 1998 musical.
“Parade” tells the true story of the trial, imprisonment, and lynching of a Jewish American man who was erroneously convicted of murdering a teenage girl in 1910s Atlanta. The protestors were from a neo-Nazi group called the National Socialist Movement, according to the Forward, and they promoted antisemitic rhetoric to theatergoers waiting to enter the theater for the show’s first preview performance.
Platt addressed the protests in a video he posted to Instagram Tuesday night.
“I got off stage and was looking at social media and naturally, the news of the fact that there were some protesters at our show had spread a lot and that’s kind...

Ben Platt and the team behind the Broadway revival of Parade, which tells the true story of a Jewish factory worker in Georgia who was falsely accused of murdering a teenage girl and later lynched by an antisemitic mob, have responded to the “very ugly and scary” antisemitic protests that took place outside the musical’s first preview performance.
Patrons attending Tuesday night’s production at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre were met with antisemitic shouts and chants outside the venue, part of a protest led by members of the neo-Nazi group the National Socialist Movement. (The militant hate group was the largest membership-based neo-Nazi effort in the U.S. during the 2000s, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, and is known for its “violent antisemitic rhetoric.”)

The Starz drama Bmf has returned for a second season. The series focuses on Detroit-born brothers Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory (Demetrius “Meech” Flenory Jr.) and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory (Da’Vinchi). As teens, they began selling drugs as a way to become financially free. Eventually, they would build one of the biggest drug organizations in the nation. The brothers came from a loving home. Their parents, Charles (Russell Hornsby) and Lucille (Michole Briana White), were hardworking church-goers who struggled financially.
White says the story of Bmf is extremely important, especially when representing Lucille Flenory in the best way possible.

Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory (Demetrius “Meech” Flenory Jr.) and Terry “Southwest Tee” Flenory (Da’Vinchi)began their organization as young teens in Detroit before going on to run one of the biggest drug-trafficking organizations in the country.
Starz has just green-lit the show for season 3. Here’s what we know.

Though the second season of Bmf hasn’t fully aired yet, it’s clear that this season is about the divide between Terry and Meech and their different leadership styles. Moreover, their parents, Charles (Russell Hornsby) and Lucille’s (Michole Briana White) marriage is coming apart at the seams.

Exclusive: Paul Mescal’s Irish eyes are smiling, and doing a jig as well. Not only did he receive a first Oscar nomination Tuesday for his leading role in Aftersun, but Deadline can reveal that the acclaimed production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, in which Mescal delivers an electrifying Stanley Kowalski, will transfer from a celebrated fringe theater in north London onto a West End stage.
Thanks in part for the move is due to Ridley Scott and Paramount agreeing to shift the start date of the filmmaker’s Gladiator 2, the sequel to 2000’s epic starring Russell Crowe, which will now begin shooting roughly two weeks later than originally scheduled.
The 26-year-old Mescal has signed on to star in Gladiator 2 as Lucius Versus, son of Connie Nielsen’s Lucille and nephew of insanely jealous Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator).

It’s been another wild month on the podcast, ping-ponging between genres and time periods. After kicking off the year with Richard Shepard’s twisty The Perfection, Trace and I ventured back to the mid-90s for an AIDS-era dissection of Todd Haynes’ Safe. This week we revisited Guillermo del Toro‘s sumptuous period Gothic Romance film, Crimson Peak.
In the film, Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) is the wealthy daughter of Buffalo businessman Carter Cushing (Jim Beaver). She’s courted by struggling entrepreneur Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston), much to the chagrin of her long-time friend Dr. Alan McMichaels (Charlie Hunnam). After the murder of her father, Edith travels to Allerdale Hall with Thomas and his brooding, sexually queer sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain), but she is almost immediately confronted by crimson apparitions, poisoned tea and plenty of secrets in the cellar. Will Edith survive the Sharpes or will she become...

Now, we’re talking about what Wes Craven dubbed “the scariest film of 1995” in Todd Haynes‘ AIDS allegory Safe, which boasts an astonishing performance from Julianne Moore.
The 1987-set Safe follows Carol White (Moore) a suburban housewife in Los Angeles, whose monotonous life is abruptly changed when she becomes sick with a mysterious illness caused by the environment around her.

Ah, Christmas. It’s a time of good food, glad tidings, and…erm… Grinch horror parody movies? Yes, new festive slasher The Mean One, clearly taking inspiration from Dr. Seuss’s iconic Christmas-hating recluse, shared a trailer this week – and given it’s the season for gifts (and our Twitter Advent Calendar is in full swing), Team Empire couldn’t resist gathering for a special, bonus, online-only edition of Trailer Talk. Watch the trailer below, and read our unfiltered, uncensored, uncompromising reactions…
John Nugent (Reviews Editor): What is The Mean One? Is the Grinch out of copyright or something? Is this like a Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey thing?
Sophie Butcher (Social Media Editor): It looks like the filmmakers can't use the original version, it's still under copyright. Maybe that's why they don't ever actually mention 'The Grinch'. It's also set in Newville, not Whoville,...

It’s the most wonderful tiiiiime of the yeeeeear! Wherever you fall on a festive scale of Scrooge to Elf, it’s certainly the best time of year for good telly: Christmas TV is every channel and streaming service’s time to shine, as they adorn their listings with sparkly specials and festive films. 2022 is no different, with everything from Christmas comedy offerings from Inside No. 9, to Ghosts and Detectorists, a new animated family film from the team behind The Gruffalo, and brand-new soppy festive rom-coms.
There’s also a growing selection box of Christmas dramas – including the last ever episode of Doc Martin – which is just as well considering this will be the first holiday season without a special Doctor Who episode since the show relaunched back in 2005.

By now, I’ve reached the point of pity for basketball luminaries like Jerry West and Magic Johnson and Pat Riley.
Because nobody paused and said, “Do we really need this?” there must have been a two- or three-month period in which they were sitting down with a different documentary crew every other day to retell the same stories about the Showtime Lakers, the Buss family and the transition from the ’80s Lakers dynasty into the ’90s Lakers dynasty led by Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

When "Arrested Development" first aired, it epitomized underrated television. Unceremoniously ending with its truncated, 13-episode third season, the show never got the contemporaneous credit it deserved. While critics at the time were positively beaming with praise — with The New York Times even remarking the premiere episodes proved "sharply satirical" — it lasted a while before the powers that be relegated "Arrested Development" to the realm of forgotten cult classics. That is, of course, until Netflix picked up the series in 2011, premiering a fourth season in 2013, a decade after the first.
In the time since, "Arrested Development" achieved almost mythic status, ranking 37 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 best television comedy series ever. That's right. The little sitcom that could is sandwiched between "Hill Street Blues" and "I Love Lucy," as good an indication as any that creator Mitchell Hurwitz achieved something special here. After 11 seasons and 117 episodes, AMC’s zombie drama “The Walking Dead” is ready to shuffle off this mortal coil. The characters have traveled across several states, met and lost countless friends, and waged wars with walkers and humans alike. As we prepare to say goodbye in the series finale on Sunday, November 20, 2022 let’s take a look at the Top 10 best “The Walking Dead” episodes of all time.
10. “Here’s Negan” – Season 10, Episode 22
The six pandemic episodes of Season 10 vary wildly in style and in quality. But the final installment, “Here’s Negan,” provided an inspired backstory for Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s villain. Morgan’s real-life spouse Hilary Burton-Morgan steps in to play Negan’s wife Lucille, in what might just be the most emotionally raw performance from the actress to date. It’s devastating to watch the real-life pair play the emotional gut punch at the end of the episode.

Life is brutal in the zombie apocalypse. AMC’s “The Walking Dead” has killed off dozens of characters over the course of its 11-season run, from series regulars to beloved guest stars. Character deaths can deliver shocking gore (like when Emmy nominee Tyler James Wilson’s Noah has his face ripped apart in a revolving door) or a final heroic moment (as when Tony and Emmy nominee Tovah Feldshuh’s Deanna sacrifices herself while delivering a defiant scream). But the most memorable ends are the ones that rip at the hearts of viewers and leave them in a puddle of tears.
As “The Walking Dead” rockets toward its November 20 series finale, here are the top five most emotional deaths from the past 11 seasons.

Chicago – One of the most prominent Americans musicians in the 20th Century, if not one of the greatest, was Louis Armstrong. The memorable black trumpeter, vocalist and outsized personality found success in the Jim Crow era, and how he did it is spotlighted in Sacha Jenkin’s documentary “Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Louis Daniel Armstrong was born in New Orleans in 1901, and was raised by his mother and grandmother in poverty. As the documentary reveals, his unlawful street activities landed him in a “colored waif’s” detention school, where he learned discipline and played in the band. After stepping out of school, he began to play on riverboats, and began to develop his signature style. He followed his mentor King Oliver to Chicago, where he did his first recordings and introduced himself to the wider world. His ascension in music, the movies and...

Here's some exciting news if the real world isn't quite miserable enough for your liking: There's a new "The Walking Dead" spin-off coming to AMC in 2023, and it features two of the characters most likely to make one another's lives hell.
"The Walking Dead: Dead City" was originally titled "The Walking Dead: Isle of the Dead," as the series will take place in Manhattan. Why the name change? Maybe "Isle of the Dead" gave people visions of zombies slurping on piña coladas instead of stumbling through Times Square. The series is a somewhat natural extension to the "Walking Dead" universe, as it takes place after the original series ends and will hopefully wrap up some loose ends for Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan).
The characters have plenty of conflict already, given that Negan once murdered Maggie's husband with a nail-covered baseball bat, so I can't imagine it's...
