Patricia Highsmith’s charming devil has fascinated film-makers since the 1960s, but his brand of evil seems peculiarly well suited to the Instagram age
He’s back. But he never went away. Patricia Highsmith’s diabolically inspired postwar creation Tom Ripley has returned, to luxuriate in our 21st-century age of Instagram lifestyle envy, tacit class paranoia and online identity fraud. He has triumphantly resurfaced in Steven Zaillian’s sumptuous and instantly addictive new eight-episode adaptation of Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr Ripley for Netflix, starring the incomparable Andrew Scott as the charmer, aesthete and serial killer. It’s a seven-star luxury hotel of a TV show in arthouse black-and-white, which my colleague Lucy Mangan has hailed as quite possibly definitive.
It’s set in the early 60s, but has a queasy resonance for 2024. At an unhurried tempo, Scott’s Ripley is shown surmounting his early unease and likable callow vulnerability,...

Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr. Ripley has been adapted into films by directors from different regions, including René Clément from France, Anthony Minghella from the US, and Jeeva Shankar from India. The current rendition, Ripley, streaming on Netflix, is a web series written and directed by Academy Award winner Steven Zaillian. It unfolds in eight leisurely-paced episodes that grab our attention from the beginning and keep us engaged in this amoral tale of fabrication, betrayal, and murder. It is a gritty tale of an individual’s challenging pursuit to assume a deceased person’s identity to achieve financial stability and maintain a respectable public image. The primary story surrounds the titular fraudster at the low of his occupation when all his shrewd manoeuvres are devised to outwit the victims and fizzle out. The dramatic events stem from the chain of events that are set in motion when an...

Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, is a watershed thriller for its critique of class, its queer undertones, and its enduring legacy. The novel inspired multiple sequels, as well as several film adaptations, the most significant of which was Anthony Minghella’s Oscar nominated 1999 film of the same name.
Showtime commissioned a series based on the original book from writer/director Steve Zaillian back in 2021, but the project eventually went to Netflix. Now the eight episode limited series is out in full, and the new iteration is more sumptuous, more faithful to the source material, and more queer (from a contemporary perspective) than any other iteration.
All of Us Strangers’ Andrew Scott stars as Tom Ripley, an unassuming man living in a run-down shared housing project in Manhattan in the late 1950s. He doesn’t have a great deal going for him when he’s tracked down by...

Who is Tom Ripley? It's a question that hangs over "Ripley," Steven Zaillian's chilly, chilling, uber-stylish adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's "The Talented Mr. Ripley." This material has been tackled on screen before — once as the 1960 French film "Purple Noon," and even more prominently in 1999 via Anthony Minghella's "The Talented Mr. Ripley." Zaillian, who wrote and directed the entire new Netflix series, seems to go to great lengths to distance his adaptation from Minghella's, even if they're essentially the same story. While the 1999 film was awash in bright, sunny colors, Zaillian and cinematographer Robert Elswit employ noir-tinged black-and-white cinematography that often looks straight out of a silent German expressionist film.
Minghella's film also leaned into the homoeroticism at the center of the Ripley character, but the Tom Ripley here, played in a brilliant calculating manner by Andrew Scott, feels almost sexless. One...

“I’m not someone who takes advantage of people,” Tom Ripley tells his new friend Dickie Greenleaf in the second episode of the new Netflix thriller Ripley. By this point, viewers have ample evidence that Tom is, in fact, exactly the kind of someone who takes advantage of people, even if Dickie and his girlfriend Marge are charmed by his company and oblivious to the threat he poses to them.

Twenty-five years after Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley comes a slower, moodier adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel. Netflix’s eight-part series, written and directed by Steven Zaillian and shot in stark black and white, stars Andrew Scott as the titular career criminal who, funded by wealthy shipping businessman Herbert Greenleaf (Kenneth Lonergan), travels to southern Italy to bring Greenleaf’s son, Dickie (Johnny Flynn), back to New York.
After arriving in the incredibly picturesque town of Atrani, where he finds Dickie living the high life with his girlfriend, Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning), Ripley quickly changes tack. He wins Dickie’s trust and embeds himself firmly in his life, but in the process rouses the suspicion of both Marge and Dickie’s friend Freddie Miles (Eliot Sumner).
While Ripley initially follows the same narrative beats as Minghella’s film, there are notable differences. For one, Scott’s Ripley...

‘Ripley’ Review: Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning in Netflix’s Moody Fresh Take on Patricia Highsmith
The Italy of Anthony Minghella’s remarkable 1999 adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley is positively bursting with la dolce vita.
It’s an ebullient and passionate world of religious and artistic fervor and when Matt Damon’s Tom Ripley begins to kill to secure his place in that world, he does so with the improvisational flair of the Blue Note jazz albums he studied to help him assimilate. And who could blame Damon’s Ripley for desiring, by any means necessary, to stay? As photographed by the great John Seale, the entire cast of The Talented Mr. Ripley practically glows. Not to justify serial murder, but who among us wouldn’t kill to spend just a little more time close to this version of Jude Law, much less to become him?

“Anatomy of a Fall” is the clear favorite to win Best Original Screenplay this year but nominees “The Holdovers,” “Past Lives,” “Maestro,” and “May December” are all hoping to spoil the party. But is “Anatomy of a Fall’s” status as frontrunner as solid as it seems? It’s won a bunch of precursor awards, sure, but what about the academy?
What movies do they like best in this category? Let’s take a look at the last 10 winners of Best Original Screenplay to see what they can tell us about the academy’s tastes in this category, and how that affects “Anatomy of a Fall” and this year’s nominees.

Mark Ruffalo’s breakout role in Kenneth Lonergan’s “You Can Count on Me” almost didn’t happen.
In a Monday interview with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett on their “Smartless” podcast, the “Poor Things” Oscar nominee recalled “literally begging” the celebrated playwright and filmmaker for the role of Terry in the 2000 feature – even though it was initially offered to Ethan Hawke.
Ruffalo had previously worked on Lonergan’s blockbuster Broadway production of “This Is Our Youth” in 1996 with costars Missy Yager and Josh Hamilton, so he had a leg to stand on when demanding an audition with Lonergan for his debut feature film.

Ahead of the release of year’s nominations later today, here are the best acting turns not even shortlisted for an Academy Award in the 21st century
News: Oppenheimer sweeps Oscar nominations – while Andrew Scott and Leonardo DiCaprio snubbed
Kenneth Lonergan’s bittersweet study of two orphaned siblings struggling to reconnect as emotionally damaged adults was Ruffalo’s big-screen breakthrough. His unreliable itinerant Terry habitually infuriates Laura Linney’s stoic single mother Sammy; yet Terry’s halting, heartfelt final monologue, referencing the film’s unspoken title, is an understated tear-jerker. For that speech alone, Ruffalo should’ve been nominated alongside Linney and Lonergan’s script.

Getting impatient for Kenneth Lonergan to get his act together and make another great movie? Ghostlight should scratch that itch and more besides, being a funny, intelligent and yet at times almost unbearably sad movie that takes a searing family tragedy and spins it into a riveting redemption story that, while a little predictable in the more familiar second half, somehow never hits a false note. Although technically an ensemble piece, with a lovely cast of supporting players whose thespian antics will ring a bell with actors of all generations, it rests squarely on a powerhouse performance from Chicago stage veteran Keith Kupferer, whose career must surely about to enter a whole new phase, perhaps to the fill the void left by the late, great Brian Dennehy.

As of this writing the frontrunner to win this year’s Oscar for Best Original Screenplay is “The Holdovers” with 69/20 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. What was previously behind it in second place was “Barbie,” yet the Academy recently declared that script to be adapted despite Warner Bros. campaigning it as original. With “Barbie” out of the way, “Past Lives” is now in second place in this category with 4/1 odds. But I think it actually has a shot of taking down “The Holdovers” for the win.
When it comes to Alexander Payne movies at the Oscars, they’ve so far gone one of two ways. Brian Cox says Succession creator Jesse Armstrong was a “gentleman” to salute him during his acceptance speech at Sunday night’s Emmy Awards.
The celebrated HBO drama won the top drama prize, and Armstrong praised the show’s cast, creatives and crew then lauded Cox, “who the show was revolved around whether he was in it or not.”
Later at the HBO | Max Emmy afterparty at San Vicente Bungalows, Cox tells me he was “touched” by Armstrong singling him out. “Jesse’s a gentleman in an industry where there aren’t many of those,” he says.
Cox adds that the entire team deserved the praise. ”All of them. The drama series win belongs to each and every one of them.”
The acclaimed actor says he knew Succession would become a “cultural landmark” from the time he read Armstrong’s first script. “I was in no doubt that it would become a benchmark.

This year’s Emmy Awards were all about TV reunions, while audiences around the country got to see the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Cheers” reunite, there were some unofficial ones that didn’t make the live broadcast.
Take the “Yellowjackets” cast and crew, who got back together before the show started.
The show was nominated for two Emmys including best drama series and lead actress in a drama for Melanie Lynskey. Hours before the show aired, the teen cast including Liv Hewson, Courtney Eaton, Sophie Nélisse, Sammi Hanratty and Kevin Alves had gathered in the lobby, chatting and taking selfies before doors to the main theater were open. They were joined by Warren Kole and later director Karyn Kusama and showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, as well as Tawny Cypress.
Yes, season 3 is being written and the show is expected to be back in production in late May.

The 2010 San Diego Comic-Con was not the biggest gathering in the event's history, but in terms of its importance as a movie marketing event, this was the freakin' year. The gargantuan, hangar-sized Hall H, christened in 2004 as the home for star-studded studio panels, was packed on both peak days as major stars and filmmakers shilled the next two years' most anticipated genre titles. Friday was all about "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which, with all its major stars present, turned into a shriek-filled presentation as deafening as The Beatles' 1964 appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
And then there was Saturday.
Warner Bros. kicked off the Hall H festivities with a buzzy panel that could've matched the "Twilight" delirium had the main Harry Potter trio of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint showed up for the "Deathly Hallows: Part I" preview. The day threatened to descend into chaos when a...

The Academy picked the right year to give an Honorary Oscar to film editor Carol Littleton. They’re saluting a female editor at a time when three of the year’s major awards contenders —“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and “Maestro” — are edited by Thelma Schoonmaker, Jennifer Lame and Michelle Tesoro, respectively, and when other women in the mix include Hilda Rasula for “American Fiction,” Victoria Boydell for “Saltburn,” Sarah Flack for “Priscilla” and co-editors Claire Simpson (with Sam Restivo) for “Napoleon” and Oona Flaherty (with Nick Moore) for “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret.”
“The Editors Guild has about 2,900 picture editors, and 764 women,” said Littleton, a one-time president of that guild. “That’s about a fourth. So isn’t it interesting that these three big prestigious films, ‘Oppenheimer,’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and ‘Maestro,’ are edited by women?”

Although highly regarded as a theater star — he earned a Tony nomination in 2006 for “Awake and Sing!” and just returned years later to Broadway in “The Price” — Mark Ruffalo is for most people a bona fide movie star. For his film performances, he has been nominated for three Oscars, two Golden Globes and four Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning one as part of the ensemble cast of “Spotlight” in 2015.
These days, however, Ruffalo’s greatest fame is largely thanks to his being part of the Marvel universe, having taken over the roles of Dr. Bruce Banner and The Hulk in 2012’s “Marvel’s The Avengers.” After a cameo performance in 2013’s “Iron Man 3,” Ruffalo’s Hulk also appeared in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in 2015, “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017 and the final “The Avengers” movies.

Focus Features’ “The Holdovers” is one of the sweetest movies of the year and is set to become a new Christmas classic. Written by David Hemingson and directed by Alexander Payne, the 1970s-set story follows Paul Giamatti as a school professor tasked with staying behind on campus to look after students not going home for Christmas. What follows is a charming, touching tale about two foes who learn to become friends. Giamatti gives a knockout performance while Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a hot contender for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a cook mourning the death of her son. The movie’s strongest point, however, is its writing.
“Whiskey Cavalier” creator and “Black-Ish” and “American Dad!” scribe David Hemingson crafted the script. He has never been nominated for an Oscar before but we expect that that he’ll win one this year. We’re predicting he will take home...

On a recent episode of "Hot Ones," actor Mark Rufflao was invited on to discuss his career while chocking down incredibly spicy hot wings. Sean Evans, the show's host, read a film synopsis to Ruffalo and asked if he could identify the title. Evans read a synopsis for a 1994 film called "Mirror Mirror II: Raven Dance," a straight-to-video horror film put out by the beloved B-movie studio Image Entertainment. Ruffalo, of course, could indeed identify the movie. "That's 'Mirror Mirror,'" he said. "That was probably my first movie." Indeed it was.
Ruffalo pointed out that there was "Mirror, Mirror" and then there was "Mirror Mirror II: Raven Dance," which had a "Penthouse pornstar" as the lead actress and Billy Drago as the male lead. He noted that he played "the series actor sidekick." He joked that he had established a brand with the "Mirror Mirror" movies, sarcastically imitating...

Ari Aster's 2018 film "Hereditary" contains a great deal of shadow-lurking, a scene of spontaneous human combustion, several decapitations, allusions to demonic powers, and at least one Satanic cult. However, if one were to ask a "Hereditary" fan about the film, they would mention Toni Collette's amazing performance before any of the above elements. They will also likely recall the scenes of sheer panic, the harrowing sense of guilt, and the unnerving presence of actor Milly Shapiro as the scary young Charlie. This is, of course, the way Aster wanted it. "Hereditary" may have supernatural elements, but it is, first and foremost, a story about the breakdown of the family unit. It's about intergenerational trauma and how our most grievous pains are handed directly to us by our mothers. It's a nightmare, but more in the Freudian sense.

Alexander Payne‘s movies often fare well in the writing categories at the Oscars with four of his films so far nominated for either Best Original Screenplay or Best Adapted Screenplay.
His second movie, “Election,” was nominated for only Adapted Screenplay in 2000 after it turned Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name into a film. Payne was nominated with his writing partner Jim Taylor, although they lost to John Irving for “The Cider House Rules.” “Sideways” then picked up five nominations in 2005 including an Adapted Screenplay bid for Payne and Taylor after they turned Rex Pickett’s 2004 novel of the same name into a hit movie. Payne and Taylor won this time around.
In 2012, “The Descendants” repeated the record of “Sideways,” matching five nominations and one Adapted Screenplay victory. This time, Payne won alongside Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. They adapted the 2007 novel of the same name from Kaui Hart Hemmings.

Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.
However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

Matt Damon and Mark Ruffalo share a laugh while performing on stage at The Center at West Park on Thursday (November 16) in New York City.
The two stars took part in a reading of the play This Is Our Youth, alongside Missy Yager, to help raise funds for the West Park Presbyterian Church building, which The Center is located in.
The event was held to raise money for the many repairs the historic church needs, and save it from being demolished to make way for a mixed-use development, which was the intent after church leaders agreed to sell it to a developer in 2022.
Other celebrities in attendance included Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Christian Slater and Fisher Stevens, as well as playwright Kenneth Lonergan, who wrote This Is Our Youth.

Could A24 wrestle another Oscar contender into the mix while already having two strong candidates with “Past Lives” and “The Zone of Interest”?
At the beginning of “The Iron Claw,” the narrator says the Von Erich family is cursed. Towards the film’s latter half, when the supposed curse has reared its ugly head, a man sitting directly in front of me with a woman begins to weep physically and audibly intensely. The woman grabbed his head to comfort him, but it was proving too much for the gentleman, who grabbed his crutches and walked out of the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The woman quickly followed him. The two would return for the post-screening Q&a with writer-director Sean Durkin and cast members Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Stanley Simons.

Thanks to enthusiastic buyers at the 2000 American Film Market, Martin Scorsese was finally able to begin filming Gangs of New York, a project that had been germinating for nearly 30 years. Based on Herbert Asbury’s 1927 book The Gangs of New York: An Informal History of the Underworld, the film, with its detailed re-creations of 19th century Manhattan, follows an Irish immigrant, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who confronts his father’s murderer, the ruthless gang leader Bill the Butcher, portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis.
With a screenplay by Time magazine film critic Jay Cocks — which would eventually be reworked by Steven Zaillian and Kenneth Lonergan — the project was originally announced in 1977, but at the time Scorsese instead opted to direct 1980’s Raging Bull. Over the years, as budget estimates rose from $30 million to around $100 million, the project drifted from Universal to Disney. Unable to secure a green light, Scorsese also offered it to Warners,...

All the Light We Cannot See is a drama series created by Steven Knight, directed by Shawn Levy, and based on the novel by Anthony Doerr.
Prepare your hearts to beat to the rhythm of one of the most sentimental series you can watch on television. “All the Light We Cannot See” is a spectacular production set in the final days of World War II during the German occupation of Paris, in which a blind girl broadcasts a radio program and helps the French resistance win the war. Meanwhile, the Germans search for her, some driven by sentiment and others for different reasons.
The series showcases stunning imagery, such as the breathtaking aerial shots, and boasts solid execution and writing.
However, be warned if you’re not a fan of sentimental stories, because this series delves deeply into the realm of emotions.

It’s 10 a.m. in Sydney, where Hayley Atwell is preparing to walk the red carpet as the “Mission: Impossible” crew’s newest member, joining producer and star Tom Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie’s ensemble of battle-hardened actors.
“This is a pure cinematic experience. It’s unadulterated entertainment, and of a huge scale,” Atwell says to Variety about “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” which finally hit theaters on July 12 following a two-year delay caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Flashy events like the Australia premiere (which featured a fireworks spectacle in honor of Cruise’s 61st birthday on July 3) mark the end of a four-year odyssey that pushed Atwell’s limits physically — leaving her hanging inside a train car that’s gone from horizontal to vertical, gripping anything nailed to the floor/wall/ceiling lest she fall to her death (or at least the safety rigging below) — and...
