The Monster House and The City Of Ember director Gil Kenan talks to us about remaking horror classic Poltergeist.
Gil Kenan has now returned to the haunted house genre, after his debut feature Monster House, and the world of working with young actors once more, after his follow-up, The City Of Ember. The result is a new remake of Poltergeist, and we spoke about the film at length this week - touching on what was shorn away in the edit, how the 3D gets really sexy, and the influence of the actors on the screenplay, amongst plenty of other things.
First though, it started with Gil picking up the phone and, whether he intended to or not, evoking the so-called Curse of Poltergeist. Here’s our conversation from the very beginning.
Gk: Bodies are falling left and right here…
It’s quite alarming to hear that.
Just so you know,...

The new Poltergeist has its moments, but could have used a few more...
The 1982 Poltergeist was, almost entirely an analog film. Perhaps there was a digital clockface here or there, maybe the script passed through some kind of word processor, but it was definitely a product of old-school, 35mm filmmaking with nary a CG beastie in sight.
The new Poltergeist is, of course, anything but. This is a digital film, both in practicality and in theme. And it takes place in a digital world, from the the very first moments, when an intense close-up of LCD pixels floats in the 3D the space behind the screen, right through to the big centrepiece battle, with its employment of Ir cameras, Gps tracking and a flying drone.
Poltergeist has, both inside its narrative and on the set, been modernised. Perhaps this is most important in what it means for the dynamics of the central family.

Amanda Seyfried, who will soon appear in the 24 Hour Plays project with her boyfriend Justin Long, brought her beloved dog Finn out on a jog Thursday.
Amanda Seyfriend & Dog Finn
Seyfried, 28, headed out with Finn for a jog in Los Angeles. The Ted 2 actress dressed for the workout in a pair of short black running shorts, a Wakeman basketball t-shirt and running sneakers. Multitasking, Seyfried held onto Finn’s leash and a water bottle in one hand while listening to music.
Though Seyfried has been spending a lot of time on the East Coast lately while filming Ted 2, she’s managed to keep her faithful dog at her side. Earlier this month, Seyfried shared a picture on Instagram of Finn posing with the stuffed animal star of the movie.

Exclusive: The Mazur/Kaplan Company and Olympus Pictures have optioned Holly Goldberg Sloan’s bestselling novel Counting By 7s. They’ve attached Oscar-nominated Beasts Of The Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis and will build the movie around her. The bestseller centers on Willow Chance, a bright young girl who, after the death of her adoptive parents, is taken in by an unlikely surrogate family and an unfit guidance counselor. In the wake of tremendous loss, she rises to build a community that she heals and that heals her.
“I am honored to play the role of Willow in Counting by 7s,” Wallis said. “I love the message behind the story. It must’ve been a busy week for Jared Harris’ agents as he’s lined up a second job in just a couple of days. On top of signing on to Guy Ritchie’s new Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie, the actor is now locking down a role in the Poltergeist remake.Monster House man Gil Kenan is directing the new take on the story of a family (led by Rosemarie DeWitt and Sam Rockwell) who move into what they think will be their dream home, only for it to turn into a horrific nightmare of malevolent spirits and – if writer David Lindsay Abaire channels Tobe Hooper’s original – child endangerment.Harris is set to play a man named Carrigan who has made his name by switching from the dusty halls of academia to presenting one of those nonsensical ghost hunter shows where overenthusiastic types with infrared...

Sam Rockwell has been great in many genres, though he’s rarely turned his hand to horror. Now, however, the prospect of working on a project produced by Sam Raimi might just be enough to lure him to the Poltergeist reboot.According to the Wrap, Rockwell is in early discussions about co-starring alongside Rosemarie DeWitt in the movie, which once again charts the story of a seemingly happy family terrorised in what was their perfect home.Rockwell’s considering various offers and hasn’t locked in any deal for Poltergeist yet, although Raimi and director Gil Kenan have him at the top of their Most Wanted list. If he does sign on, Rockwell will be the head of the Bowen family, whose daughter Madison is abducted by supernatural forces, much like Carole Anne in the original.Oz The Great And Powerful’s David Lindsay Abaire wrote the script for the new take,...

Film-maker whose documentaries allowed the subjects to speak for themselves
The documentary film-maker Michael Grigsby, who has died aged 76, strove to convey the experiences of ordinary people, and those on the margins of society. His subjects ranged from Inuit hunters in northern Canada and North Sea fishermen to Northern Irish farmers, Vietnamese villagers and, most recently, ageing American veterans of the Vietnam war.
He made more than 30 films – many of them for Granada TV's World in Action and Disappearing World – which were marked by the way in which they allowed their subjects to speak for themselves. Taking his films back to the communities he had filmed for their approval became a vital part of Grigsby's process of securing trust. Some – like the Inuit – would subsequently use his films to explain their lives to outsiders.
Grigsby's questions were never heard and he abhorred commentary, preferring brief captions or the overlaid voices...

City of Steam’s closed beta for the PC is almost to an end. The browser-based, free to play City of Steam is an online RPG that takes place in a industrial world shaped by mythic forces. We recently set down with the game's communication manager Gabriel V. Laforge to learn more!
Amanda Dyar: The release of the City of Steam closed beta is nearly at an end. What had the team most excited heading into the beta's launch, and what is the one thing the team can not wait for players to try out in City of Steam?
Gabriel V. Laforge: We were very excited to release Dwarves as a playable race, as those had been highly anticipated by players for a long time now. Having their own sets of skills and their unique storyline, we were anxious to see what our player community would think.

Back in April a story started circling the net that Sam Raimi was thinking about remaking Poltergeist. The Hollywood Reporter quickly put out a story that Raimi was only producing the flick. Now THR has changed its tune once again.
In a new article just posted on THR, we found this little nugget of information. Apparently David Lindsay-Abair is writing a script for a remake of Poltergeist to be directed by Sam Raimi. What gives? No clue. We'll find out soon enough, though, that's for sure.
The Poltergeist reimagining originally had Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) attached to direct, but then money woes at MGM slowed everything down to a grinding halt on the flick.

I have to admit that 2012 has practically bombarded music lovers with an astounding amount of fantastic debuts this year. It’s enough to give anyone hope that for every terrible generic band they hear, there’s another band giving it their all in a studio somewhere, proving that hard work can pay off. Thought Beneath Film is one of those bands, and they present enough talent to keep the radios turned up for a long time to come.
Playing an extremely catchy brand of pop-rock, Thought Beneath Film have a chemistry and youthful vigor that helps make up for any of the mistakes made on their debut. With snappy, shining production and songs that get stuck in your head instantly, Detours is a promising opening number from a band that has nowhere to go but up.

Few actresses seem to make as diverse an array of choices as Nicole Kidman. The actress has spent the last decade or two as one of the few actresses who can truly call themselves A-list, but swings between incredibly bold, interesting choices with world-class filmmakers, and nearly irredeemable crap ("Bewtiched," "The Stepford Wives," "The Invasion," "Trespass"). She rarely gives a turn that's anything less than totally committed, but one always feels a little nervous settling in for a new Kidman flick.
That being said, one only has to skim her resume to remember that she is, after all, one of our most gifted and interesting movie stars, and has given more great performances than most of her contemporaries. Today is Kidman's 45th birthday, and as such, we thought we'd mark the occasion by picking out five of our favorite performances from the actress. Did we miss out on yours? You...

For a while we all expected MGM Studios to go the way of the dodo, but after some year-long nailbiting they're back up and running....well, walking at least. In order to stay alive though they're going to need something other than the odd Bond/Middle Earth movie on the books, so they're taking the journey to Remakeland. No Wait Come Back! They aren't becoming another Platinum Dunes where they just take old horror titles and put a bunch of sexy/sassy/irritating 90210 teenagers in them. No no, MGM seem to at least have an interest in making something interesting out of their remakes. How so, say you? Well, they're currently preparing a remake of Craig T. Nelson horror Poltergeist, and Vulture are saying they've tapped David Lindsay-Abair to write it. May not be a household name, but he's a Pulitzer winning writer, who recently wrote Nicole Kidman miseryfest Rabbit Hole,...

- Oz, The Great and Powerful lost Robert Downey Jr. a while back, but new life--in the form of Mila Kunis and James Franco--is reviving the Sam Raimi remake. Just like ABC's Oscarcast, Disney is aiming young to boost audience potential. We won't be surprised if they throw Anne Hathaway in there for good measure as Dorothy. Be one of the first to see Nicole Kidman in her Golden Globe-nominated performance
Nicole Kidman returns to the big screen in Rabbit Hole, with a stunning Golden Globe nominated performance. Becca (Kidman) and Howie (Aaron Eckhart) are a married couple emerging from the shadow of an unexpected loss. With their world tilted off of its axis, the couple embark on separate journeys, making increasingly unexpected choices.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play by David Lindsay Abaire, Rabbit Hole is a vivid, honest and, at times, unexpectedly funny portrait of a family searching for what remains possible in the most impossible of situations.
Extra members can attend a preview screening of Rabbit Hole on Tuesday 1 February at the Empire Cinema, Leicester Square.
Certificate 12A. In cinemas Friday 4 February.

Chicago – David Fincher’s “The Social Network” leads the 2010 nominations of the Chicago Film Critics Association with eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor. “Black Swan,” “The King’s Speech,” “True Grit,” and “Winter’s Bone” tied for the second most nominations with six apiece.
Best Director and Best Picture matched five-for-five with Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan,” Christopher Nolan’s “Inception,” Tom Hooper’s “The King’s Speech,” David Fincher’s “The Social Network,” and Debra Granik’s “Winter’s Bone” all earning nominations for the big prize and their individual filmmakers.
“Blue Valentine” co-stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams may have been surprisingly snubbed this week by the Screen Actors Guild but they were both nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress by the Chicago Film Critics Association. I would like ten bucks for every couple whose otherwise happy marriage broke up because of the death of their young children. Recently in my Brooklyn building alone, one such family was torn apart when their fourteen-year-old daughter passed on after suffering from leukemia for years. This seemed puzzling: wouldn't a catastrophic event like this, arguably the most stressful one that could occur to any person or couple, cement a family together? For a further understanding of the phenomenon-and an answer to my question-you can't go wrong by looking into John Cameron Mitchell's film "Rabbit Hole," scripted by David Lindsay-Abarie from his Pulitzer-prize winning play, which also garnered a Tony for Cynthia Nixon for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Drama. A renowned Scottish actor and director, he regularly commentated on state occasions for BBC television
Tom Fleming, who has died of cancer aged 82, was an outstanding figure in the Scottish theatre of the second half of the 20th century, the first television "face" of Jesus of Nazareth in a 1953 mini-series, and well known as a BBC television and radio commentator at many royal and ceremonial occasions since he first broadcast, for the BBC, during the Queen's coronation in 1953.
He was a Baptist lay preacher, a deeply private man of great moral integrity and stature. This much was clear not only on stage but also as he spoke in his flawless, rich and velvety baritone voice at the funerals of Diana, Princess of Wales, and the Queen Mother. So assiduous was he in his properly felt sense of duty that he declined the invitation to appear in a play by Mikhail Bulgakov...
