★★☆☆☆ I, Anna (2012) director Barnaby Southcombe, son of actress Charlotte Rampling (who takes the lead role as a femme fatale in this, his feature debut), attempts to adapt Elsa Lewin's novel of the same name in what is a disappointing thriller set in London's Barbican. After a man is brutally murdered in his apartment, Dci Reid (a melancholic and dour Gabriel Byrne), is called to the scene. Barely sleeping and going through a difficult divorce, Reid walks the streets absorbing himself in his work until he meets Anna (Rampling), a lonely women desperately seeking love, currently resorting to tiresome singles nights.

I, Anna – based on the eponymous Elsa Lewin novel – is director Barnaby Southcombe’s debut feature film, as he collaborates with his very own mother Charlotte Rampling, who takes on the title role in what is a thrilling neo-noir that is both stylish and taut in its approach. Working alongside a close family relative certainly appears to have triumphed this time around, although it must have made the bath scene somewhat uncomfortable to shoot.
Rampling plays Anna, a lonely, single woman on the hunt for love, living in her London apartment with daughter Emmy (Hayley Atwell) and granddaughter. The divorcee decides to attend contrived singles’ nights with the blind faith that she may meet the man of her dreams. However, she finds herself back at the apartment of George Stone (Ralph Brown), who is brutally murdered later on that evening.

Adapted from Elsa Lewin's novel of the same name, the movie starts Charlotte Rampling as the titular Anna, an older woman trudging along daily life in London where she lives with her daughter and granddaughter in a one bedroom flat. Her daughter Emmy (Hayley Atwell) encourages her mother to get out and meet new people and Anna reluctantly complies, joining speed dating and mingling evenings. After meeting a man she fancies at one particular outing, she agrees for a drink at his place, a drink that ends with both of them knocked out and Anna waking up the next morning next to a dead body before running out of the apartment with no indication of what happened. This year’s BFI London Film Festival offers several new films based on books, reflecting a common trend in modern cinema and the recent film industry and proving that intelligent story-telling is something that should transcend format and translate through alternate medium. In some cases this is just loosely inspired by, where others can be straight page to screen interpretations… Here’s some of the highlights:
Some of the key texts that follow this trend are Salman Rushdie’s debut screenplay for the European premiere adaptation of his Booker prize winning novel; Midnight’s Children. Directed by Deepa Mehta, this Official Competition film is a riveting allegorical saga that parallels the dramatic upheavals in one’s family history with the events that would define contemporary India. Salman Rushdie is conducting a Q&A on this and his career as a renowned cinephile on 15th October.

The Berlin International Film Festival continues to firm up their slate before events kick off next month, and this morning they've announced a handful of special screenings, with a couple drawing particular attention. First up, Jason Reitman's caustic and funny "Young Adult" will receive it's German premiere at a special gala screening, which will likely be a big ticket event. Another movie we've been quietly keeeping an eye on is "I, Anna" starring Charlotte Rampling, Gabriel Byrne, Hayley Atwell, and Eddie Marsan. The film quietly rolled into production last year, and does seem promising. Based on the novel by Elsa Lewin, it tells a noir story from the perspective of a femme fatal who falls for a detective in the case. Atwell? Femme fatale? We're in. It makes it's world premiere at a special screening. And while there are not many opportunities when people like Martin Scorsese, David Fincher,...

We're not sure why the news just came out on this since production began back in January and has just wrapped up, but British actress Hayley Atwell (who we first got wind of in supporting roles in Cassandra’s Dream and The Duchess with her major break coming in Brideshead Revisited) is among the cast of the noir-thriller I, Anna. She stars alongside her Duchess co-star Charlotte Rampling, and leading mean Gabriel Byrne and the gifted Eddie Marsan - an actor we feel never receives enough credit. Adapted for the screen by first time director Barnaby Southcombe (son of Rampling), Atwell plays the daughter of Rampling's antagonist-like character. Filming began back in January, it wrapped this month and should be out in time for the Fall festival season. Gist: Based on the novel of the same name by psychoanalyst Elsa Lewin, this is about a lonely police detective who arrives...

Terry George, who wrote and directed Hotel Rwanda and Reservation Road and wrote In the Name of the Father, has roped in Brendan Fraser to star in the comedy heist film Whole Lotta Sole. The film is written by Mr. George and Thomas Gallagher, and follows "a young man robbing a fish shop in order to pay off a gambling debt; the heist goes terribly -- and humorously -- awry when it turns into a hostage situation." Yep: robbing a fish shop. Brendan Fraser is not the young man; he's the shopkeeper. (But he is trying to elude his father in law, a gangster.) He can be a solid actor, when not being called upon to mug and grimace in family adventures. No idea how this one will turn out, but we'll keep a lookout for the actors chosen to play the robber and gangster father in law. [Variety [1]] After the break,...

We’re so used to films announcing their cast long before a single roll of film has spooled through the camera that it’s a bit of a shocker to learn of casting after the movie has actually been shot. But such is the case with I, Anna, whose producers have just announced Hayley Atwell as part of the cast even though the project itself is in the can. That must’ve been a heck of a long contract negotiation! She’s part of the cast alongside leads Gabriel Byrne and Charlotte Rampling as a detective and a femme fatale caught up in a noir murder mystery. Atwell is playing Emmy, Rampling’s daughter.Writer/director Barnaby Southcombe (who also happens to be Rampling’s son) wrote the script based on Elsa Lewin’s 1984 novel. He shot the film around London and Hamburg in the last few weeks and is now busy editing the results.

After that, she's set to jump into the realm of seedy film noir as Variety reports Atwell has signed on to I, Anna, based on the 1986 thriller by Elsa Lewin. Variety describes the...
