The giant gramophone scene in “The Color Purple” was the film in microcosm for director Blitz Bazawule. That’s the transformational moment where Celie (Fantasia Barrino) imagines being atop an enormous record that rotates on the turntable around her new best friend, Shug (Taraji P. Historically, over 300 movies are in the running for best picture consideration. Obviously, more films will be added, and in greater batches, over the next several months. Distributors are the ultimate decision makers on when a movie is placed on the Academy Screening Room for viewing.

‘The Color Purple’ Musical Showcases Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino in Bold First Trailer (Video)
Oprah Winfrey said at this year’s CinemaCon that director Blitz Bazawule’s musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel is “not your Mama’s ‘Color Purple’,” and based on the first trailer, she’s right. Warner Bros. released the first trailer today, and between cinematographer Dan Laustsen’s cinematography and Fantasia Barrino’s soaring vocals, there’s enough packed into two minutes to bring out all the emotions.

Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg have reunited to revive “The Color Purple” into a movie musical, directed by Blitz Bazawule.
After debuting footage for distributors at CinemaCon last month, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the new adaptation, which is set to premiere in North America on Dec. 25. The film will open internationally beginning Jan. 18, 2024.

After debuting footage for distributors at CinemaCon last month, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the new adaptation, which is set to premiere in North America on Dec. 25. The film will open internationally beginning Jan. 18, 2024.
The trailer features visually bold motifs as it takes audiences inside Celie’s headspace with “American Idol” winner Fantasia reprising her Broadway role, in her major motion picture debut. It also gives an insight into the sisterhood of the women at the heart of the story. Elevated by grandeur, the highlights are the musical clips and jaw-dropping production set against the backdrop of Mister’s Farm.

Presenting this “celebration of sisterhood” billed as “not your mama’s Color Purple,” she asserted Tuesday at CinemaCon that The Color Purple “can only be experienced on the big screen” and committed to help to “get the groups in the seats. There’s coming” when the movie opens on Dec. 25. She described the project as having “magicial realism. wholesome family goodness” and and amazing cast.

Chad Stahelski's "John Wick: Chapter 4," the "Götterdämmerung" of action movies, is a bloody rainbow of visual texture. A lot of the film's photography, by cinematographer Dan Laustsen (a regular collaborator with Guillermo Del Toro) is steely and shiny, taking place in dark clubs, shadowy back rooms, and French streets at night. To distinguish the locales — and the fight scenes — Laustsen carefully expanded the film's color palate, giving each location its own unique motif. This is a common technique for many filmmakers, of course, but it was notably striking in "Chapter 4," given how extreme it was.

Over the course of four films, the “John Wick” franchise has established itself as the most gorgeous series in the history of action cinema, with vibrant colors and gliding camera moves that provide a counterpoint to the gritty, handheld camerawork of the “Bourne” movies. John Wick: Chapter 4 director Chad Stahelski admits he’s open to a fifth film in his assassin franchise starring Keanu Reeves for Lionsgate, following Chapter 4’s big debut. In its second weekend, the movie has already topped $245 million globally.
“It’s very flattering for them to come back and, you know, say ‘We want more’ and it’s not just a cash grab. It’s legitimately the audience wants more,” he says in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen podcast series. “I think we all need that little bit of time to go, ‘Whew. Let’s see what’s next.’ … If Keanu and I, a few months from now sit down at a whiskey bar in Japan again and go, ‘Yep, we’ll never do another one of those,’ and then all of a sudden go, ‘Yeah, but I got an idea,’ we’re open to it.

There's more than one scene that will likely drill its way into our pop culture consciousness (or every time we walk up a set of really long stairs), and one of those is an overhead shot of Wick shooting and flamethrowing his way through an abandoned Parisian building.
The sequence is mesmerizing and like nothing we've seen on the big screen before. I spoke with "John Wick: Chapter 4" director Chad Stahelski before the movie's release, and during that discussion, I asked about how he and his team came up with the idea and then pulled it off. Though it received a Best Picture nomination at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022, Guillermo del Toro's re-adaptation of the William Lindsay Gresham novel "Nightmare Alley" hit theaters the same day as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and was overshadowed by that movie's juggernaut success amid the pandemic. It makes the most of those shadows, though, filling them with smoke and "the poetry of disillusionment and existentialism," as del Toro has called it. Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

At the 94th Academy Awards, Dune‘s Greig Fraser landed his first Oscar for Best Cinematography, joking that he was happy his award was up early in the broadcast, so that he could “get out and get to the bar.”
“Denis Villeneuve, sir, Master Denis,” Fraser continued, praising the film’s director. “He’s brought a whole group of unknown actors together to make an amazing movie, along with our lovely producers.”
The Dp then went on to thank his collaborators and fellow nominees, including production designer Patrice Vermette, VFX supervisor Paul Lambert, makeup and hair designer Donald Mowat and costume designer Jacqueline West, before paying tribute to his crew, and then his wife and kids.
“Allowing a middle-aged man to go out and play with his friends in the sand dunes for six months is pretty amazing, so thank you,” he said in closing. “I’ll be home in time for dinner.

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Cinematography Oscar are “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The Power of the Dog,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and “West Side Story.” Our odds currently favor “Dune” (10/3) taking the prize, followed in order by “The Power of the Dog” (18/5), “The Tragedy of Macbeth” (4/1), “West Side Story” (9/2), and “Nightmare Alley” (9/2).
This is the seventh time that Janusz Kaminski (“West Side Story”) has vied for this award, making him one of the 26 most-nominated lensers ever. He now has critical momentum going into Sunday’s Oscars, bolstered by his recent BAFTA prize and praise for his dark and gritty “The Batman.”
However, don’t be surprised if Wegner (winner of the Critics Choice Award) pulls off an upset over her fellow Australian and becomes the first woman to win the Oscar for cinematography. Her director, “Power of the Dog’s” Jane Campion, is expected to win the Oscar for Best Director. None of the 13 precursor prizes announced winners before Oscar nominations were revealed on February 8. However, all but one of them — the Casting Society of America — revealed their roster of contenders before the start of Oscar nominations balloting on January 27. The CSA, which chimed in on February 1, will be the only guild to hold its ceremony after final Oscar voting ends on March 22; the Artios Awards are the next day.

The American Society of Cinematographers awarded Greig Fraser its top prize for his work on “Dune” at its annual awards on Sunday. Denis Villeneuve’s epic based on the classic Frank Herbert novel was one of the two films coming into tonight with the most momentum, having won the cinematography prize at the BAFTA Film Awards last week. It beat out The Power of the Dog, which fetched the Critics Choice Award that same day.
Katelin Arizmendi, the second unit Dp on Dune, accepted the award for Fraser, who recently tested positive for Covid and was unable to attend the ceremony. Now, 36 years later, the American Society of Cinematographers Awards is returning to the smaller scale of yore even as it promises to celebrate a wide range of image-makers. The ceremony will take place on March 20th at the ASC Clubhouse, the org’s modest, if stylish, headquarters in Hollywood, rather than in a cavernous ballroom.
But even though ASC has reduced the scale of the event this year, the scope of the awards has continued to expanded significantly since that first evening. Honors now go to TV categories as well as documentary. The ASC’s Spotlight Award joined the parade in 2013 to recognize films seen mainly on the festival circuit, in limited theatrical release or outside the U.
